The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.

Good for beginners.......2007-02-15

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

How can you go wrong with Mozart?...Buy this and find out........2007-05-13

I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.

Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.

Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

[...] Honestly, it isn't THAT THAT great, but its good enough for its price. I'd say that your $ pays off, for a while. I've noticed how after a long time, it gets aggrivating at times. No harm meant, "Beethoven lover". I just mean don't plunge into this cd with all the hopes in the world. Besides, it's just my opinion, so you may like it more than me. All i can say is; a) listen to some samples before you buy, b)know this is not REALLY the great Beethoven himself, and c) enjoy YOUR music, whatever it may be.

This a great priced cd, but the content is why it is so cheap. It's a true-amateur album. Beethoven Lover is over her/his head. This is the real world, not a fantasy-everyone-likes-every-type-of-music world. Deal with it and agree with me. It isn't so great.

Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

Like Floating On A Cloud.......2006-09-20

My first real appreciation of this sound was from watching the film "Slaughterhouse Five" in the theater, back in the '70s. That soundtrack was just a taste of what you get with this recording. My family pops this CD in the car stereo on long trips, and glide down the highway to some original smooth grooves. Helps the miles pass swiftly. Music for the soul.

Surely you don't need me to review the guy. You know who he is, you've heard his music, and I hope you own some. So let me turn the podium over to a cat named Picasso, and you can read into that whatever you wish. She's in a chair, near the CD player. She has entered the room specifically for the music. Her eyes are squinted, almost but not quite shut, little face concentrating on just how contented those sounds make her feel. Nobody can say why they move her so, any more than we can say why they move us so. If we knew the answer to that one, we'd copy the guy. But anyway, she loves the music, and don't you dare make a sound such as squeaking your computer chair. If you do, her golden orbs will open, fix upon your face, and shame you. Yes they will. But if you are quiet long enough, you can watch a little calico sleep, with the very same sweet kitten face that drew you to her five years ago. Bach is gooooood.

Good CD, especially for novices.......2005-10-12

I was looking for a recommended Bach CD - certain music by a certain orchestra - and stumbled on this. It is an excellent choice for a new library. I think when there was more than one movement to a piece, it would have made more sense to go ahead and keep the movements together instead of separating them, but a novice listener would not notice. A great way to become exposed to a great composer.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

Rush's Last Nod In The 80s - Takes Time To Realize The Greatness.......2007-07-11

When this album came out in November of 1989 I was no longer an avid Rush fan. I had other bands stealing my attention. It wasn't until some years later that I got back into Rush and began to listen to the albums that I had missed. Presto was one of them, so was Roll The Bones and Counterparts. Rush had grown kinda tired to me. There is the old die-hard Rush side of me that digs anything before Moving Pictures (except The Necromancer and maybe Rivendell) and then there is the new Rush fan that likes Signals and Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows. Rush has always broken their albums up in fours (until recently that is) by making a live album to close the door on another section of Rushtory (History. KISStory. Why not Rushtory?) and those live albums have always marked a new direction in the band's sound or motivation. You can hear the most drastic changes after All The World's A Stage and Exit...Stage Left, but even after A Show Of Hands, Rush continued to change. Hold Your Fire had already started the progression Rush was formulating with their latter work and Presto is the culmination of that. Lite and often overlooked, there are still some standout songs here in the mix. Let's look at the listing:

Show Don't Tell - The first time I heard Presto I was hardly impressed. This song did nothing to minimalize my fears. After years of listening to this song and the rest of the album, it grows on you. Presto was one of the first Rush albums that I had to digest for some time before I started to like it. The is a great song, it just took a while for me to realize it.

Chain Lightning - The Presto sound is not gonna go over very well with a lot of the old Rush fans, because it lacks the punch of previous Rush efforts. You have to look past that and accept that Rush is no longer that band. (YYZ is dead). Chain Lightning is a good song and Neil hasn't lost any of his edge as a lyricist. Geddy's vocals have become lighter over the years, less sharp, and that my lead to more people liking them. Face it, Geddy's voice is an acquired taste.

The Pass - The started to do this one live again in the past few tours and it is one of thos songs that you have to think about. Is it about school shooters? Teen suicide? Angst? Maybe all of them. Poignant. Impressive.

War Paint - The worst thing about Presto is that it is so cohessive, so flowing as an album that the songs tend to blend together. You have trouble remembering the titles of the songs. Another teenage angst song. Good. Not brilliant.

Scars - An over-looked gem. The rhythm is infectious. Is this Rush or U2? I like it.

Presto - The title track is an acoustic lesson in life and aspirations. Straight-forward. Mellow. I'm not one to go pointing my finger when I radiate more heat than light. Strange lyrics. Builds towards the end into an anthem. Reminds me of Resist of the latter Test For Echo.

Superconductor - One of my personal favorites. I used to play this in the car all the time and it would drive my wife nuts, but she actually liked it. This is the ONLY song by Rush that my wife could be said to like. I just love this song. It jams. The riff Alex delivers is cool.

Anagram For Mongo - Neil's clever lyrics make this song charming. Rush was always the Thinking Man's rock band. Flowing. Electric.

Red Tide - Another personal favorite from this album. The song itself is okay, but the lyrics are arresting, and Geddy delivers them with heart, making this song great. About the terrors of human intervention(pollution, AIDS, environmental destruction, etc.) Fugitives at the bedroom door, lovers pause to find an open store. Intense.

Hand Over Fist - Although Alex's guitar is not as biting as it was say on Moving Pictures or even Power Windows, he gets his point across. This is an often over-looked song because it's so deep into a very blending album. There are shreds of greatness here and there and especially in this song. Alex wails.

Available Light - Starts off very dragging and turns into a haunting song. The lyrics on Presto are still very technical and absorbing and even the lesser tunes bring about a sense of accomplishement. Reflections of the past. Streak of light, moving picture, moments caught in time... For and album ender, Rush put in a gem.

Overall, Presto is not a bad album in any sense. There are many great songs here. You just have to learn that newer Rush takes some time to digest before you can truly appreciate it. Had this been the first album by Rush that I ever heard, I probably wouldn't have been a Rush fan. Since I had some perspective of what they had done and what they were going for with Presto, I wound up liking it alot after some time had passed.

"Presto" - An Underrated Rush Classic.......2007-06-28

1989's "Presto" was the band's 13th studio album and marked the beginning of a new direction for the band. The use of synthesizers, which were used heavily on the previous four albums, were scaled back dramatically and guitars were brought back to the forefront. While this act could be interpreted as the band returning to their roots, the sound on "Presto" is still miles away from the band's 70's sound. This was the beginning of a new sound for Rush; a sound they would continue to work on throughout the 90's.

"Presto" is quite possibly the most underrated and overlooked album in the entire Rush catalogue. It is one of the band's worst selling albums. However, despite the lack of popularity, "Presto" is simply a classic Rush release. It is an extremely capable and solid album throughout. There are no standout "super-hits" on this one, which is probably why it isn't a more popular album, but tracks like "The Pass," "Red Tide," and "Available Light," are some of Rush's best songs to date. Anyone avoiding this album simply because it doesn't contain mega-popular songs like "Tom Sawyer" and "Subdivisions" is truly missing out.

"Presto" is a transitional album. Traces of "Hold Your Fire" are still here and are mixed in with the new sound being developed. Like most transitional albums, consistency is an issue. Some of the songs here, like "Scars," are so different that they almost sound out of place. Indeed, there are some "funky" and "jazzy" elements in "Presto" that have not been heard before on previous efforts. These elements hint at what the band was planning for their next couple of albums (Roll the Bones, specifically.) This makes "Presto" one of the most diverse Rush albums. This diversity will explain the polarizing and mixed reviews of the album. Some will love it, some will hate it. Luckily I fall into the former and not the latter.

1)Show Don't Tell - This is the best known song from this album, even though it didn't quite reach the status of a "hit." The first 16 seconds will lead you to believe the band is continuing in the same direction as "Power Windows" and "Hold Your Fire," and then BAM! Lifeson's guitar breaks through with a powerful "funky" riff. Complete with the band's signature tempo-changes and melody, this song flat-out rocks. The "bass-lite" production becomes apparent during the passages in this song. When Geddy Lee starts plugging away on the bass, it sounds notably lighter than it used to. This is attributed to the new producer. The remastered version improves this problem somewhat, but not completely. Still, a great song. 9/10

2)Chain Lightning - Starts off with an ethereal synth riff that quickly gives way to a haunting guitar riff. Great melodic vocals, catchy chorus, excellent guitar work. Although a fairly mellow song, I appreciate the heavy riffs thrown in by Lifeson. It keeps it very interesting. Another great song. 8/10

3)The Pass - Wow. This has got to be one of Rush's best songs. Some of the best, most poignant lyrics ever written by Peart, beautiful song melodies, and powerfully emotional vocals. Even those who don't like this album love this one. The band has stated that this is one of their favorite songs to perform live. Simply incredible. 10/10.

4)War Paint - A solid song, though not as memorable as some of the others. Catchy chorus, nice use of the piano, great riffing by Lifeson. On par with "Chain Lightning." 8/10.

5)Scars - The opening bass riff gives this song a jazz-fusion sound. The drumming is almost tribal at times. Synthesizer is used to give the song an atmospheric effect. A very unique song, to say the least. Admittedly, I did not like this song the first time I heard it. After repeated listens, it started to grow on me. It still isn't one of my favorites on here, but I like its uniqueness and atmospheric qualities. 7/10

6)Presto - Starts off slower than I'd like it to. The opening line "If I could wave my magic wand" made me roll my eyes upon first listening. Geddy's vocal performance shines brightly in this song. At about the 2 minute mark the song gets going at a good pace. At 3 minutes, the song gets faster and heavier. Great drumming, excellent acoustic guitar from Lifeson. Again, great vocal performance. This ends up being a strong performer. 8/10

7)Superconductor - Probably my least favorite on here. Although one of the heaviest songs on here, it is more or less a generic rock song. It is also a little too repetitive for me personally. The background vocals during the chorus are also kind of annoying. 6/10

8)Anagram (For Mongo) - The title is a reference to "Blazing Saddles." Nice touch. Anyway, I like this song. It isn't a standout track by any means, but it is melodic with a catchy chorus. For some reason, I am reminded of Genesis when I hear the chorus. It's a nice, mellow, middle-of-the-album song. 8/10

9)Red Tide - After the first few seconds of the piano intro, I actually said "This song has potential." I was right. I simply can't believe that this song wasn't a big hit when it was released. Without question, one of the strongest tracks on "Presto." This song sounds like it could have been on "Grace Under Pressure." The style is very close, in my opinion. Anyway, I love this song. Beautiful use of the piano, extremely catchy chorus, intelligent and relevant lyrics. 10/10

10)Hand Over Fist - This song deals with the topic of "Rock, Paper, Scissors." I give this song points for originality, but it isn't one of the best songs on here. The chorus is very repetitive throughout the song. Great vocal delivery by Geddy Lee. Overall, not bad, just not great. 7/10

11)Available Light - An amazing way to end an album. This song might have the best chorus of any song on here. "Available Light" sums up the album perfectly. The song itself is a diverse and beautiful mixture of all the styles present on the album - jazz, synth-pop, and rock. It all comes together here. There simply could not be a more perfect ending to this album. One of their best songs ever. 10/10

So, although not all the songs here are perfect, the good far outweighs the bad. This album deserves a lot more respect than it gets. "Presto" contains some of Rush's very best work. Although some tracks are better than others, there are no "bad" songs on here at all. If given a fair chance, I'm convinced that "Presto" will end up being one of your favorites as well. It may not be as immediately impressive as "Permanent Waves" and "Moving Pictures," but it will grow on you.

Note: If you are new to Rush, I do not recommend making this your first purchase. Start off with "Permanent Waves" or "Moving Pictures" and then branch off from there. However, make sure you have this in your collection eventually. It is a must have Rush release.

Rush go adult contemporary.......2007-06-17

While Rush dropped some of the synths and brought back the guitars they also forgot to bring back the rock. This is Rush going adult contemporary and sounds as different from their early '80s output such as Moving Pictures and Signals as Sting's solo work sounds different from the Police. While the songs are sometimes moving such as in War Paint and the lyrics poignant as in The Pass (excellent song about teen suicide), the music is far too often far too lite. And while they don't necessarily fall to the depths of using pop cliche's (other than the overuse of fade outs rather than real endings), neither is this music all that challenging. What you get is melodic, middle of the road music (for Rush) that is way too comfortable and pop for my tastes. The sound of the album is quite trebly also. I can't imagine a fan of the '70s or early '80s Rush or the excitement they could generate liking this cd very much. Presto isn't horrible, there are a couple of gems here, but it's my least favorite cd of theirs. Rush ended the '80s not with a bang, but with the mellowest effort of their career. Thank the gods they brought back the rock with their subsequent and strong album Counterparts.

Presto is a home run.......2007-06-08

I picked up this album in 1989 when I was 21. It shook me to the core and had me hooked to RUSH for the rest of my life. All of the songs pick into my soul and I listen to it in some form or another every day. I esp love Superconductor, Anagram (for Mongo) [Candygram for Mongo] and Presto!

Pick this one up, you won't be disappointed and maybe you'll become a RUSH for life too.

Not Hold Your Fire but decent.......2006-12-16

I was reading through reviews of other Rush albums and people seemed to take negative shots quite a bit at this one. I will say that I am not a huge fan of 70's Rush but do rather like a lot of their 80's stuff, and of course their early 90's stuff is really good, up until Test for Echo which is really where they lost me.

Presto is an album that actually flows quite well from the starting track of Show Don't Tell to the last Available Light. Though their sound is not quite as storybookish as those on Hold Your Fire, it does rock pretty hard on certain tracks, but more than that the lyrics aren't half bad on the standout tracks Anagram, Red Tide(which is a very political song about environmental issues, which is even more pertinent now then it was in 1989), and Hand Over Fist, easily the best tracks on this album. While you won't find epic tracks like Force Ten and Tai Shan, you will find great drumming as usual by Neal Peart and some inspired guitar licks by Alex Lifeson, and of course Geddy Lee is always consistent. Give it a shot.

Programmed similarly to the Beethoven for Babies collection, this set of Bach compositions runs the emotional gamut, from the gently eye opening to the jumpy arm raising, collecting each set of pieces under a thematic header. The first several selections ("Waking Up") feature solo piano works that come directly from Bach's more pedagogic works, compositions intended for students to use as exercises to loosen their touch. Played superbly by pianist Sviatoslav Richter, as well as the Romero brothers (Pepe and Celedonio) on warm guitar, these compositions urge the ear to open. And then you come the pieces gathered under the "Playtime" heading: jazz pianist John Lewis picks up a couple pieces, as do the folks in Canadian Brass. Then the mood shift heads back to the sleepyhead state with "Winding Down" and "And So to Bed," each of which slows the tempo and quiets the passion to a doze. Our favorite CD for all occasions.......2005-05-15

This is absolutely my favorite CD that we bought for our baby! We've bought quite a few classical-music-for-baby compilations, and this is far and away the best. The music is fun, flirty, stimulating, sweet, and beautifully performed. It's not syrupy, dumbed-down, or played on electronic instruments like some of those other compilations. We listen to it all the time. I now buy this as a baby shower gift for everyone I know!

You can't beat Bach. If classical music is the thing you want for your baby, get this CD. If you are single and have no kids, but classical music is your thing, get this CD. This is fantastic reading music, study music (regardless of what you're studying), and just plain relaxing music. I also highly recommend the CD, BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN 1.

Classical, Jazz and Opera Bach all in one.......2001-05-30

This is a versatile collection in terms of composition, performance and layout. Comparing to most of CD with classical selections for baby, this edition is more nutritious and rich on musical experience. Genre wise, the piano solo, concerti, chamber and opera are all included. Performance wise, it is absolute a feast -- Sir Neville Marrier conducting Academy of St. Martin-in-the fields, Jazz Pianist John Lewis delivering the charming and uplifting variation, and Kiri Te Kanawa's heavenly creamy voice. The combination of these musicians and recordings is a decision with great artistic sensibility. The layout is perfectly arranged -- from the waking up, playtime and to the bed. This is not just another CD juggles some pieces together from a brandy composer. For a more serious editing of baby music, this shall be something as a guideline.

Astounding!!!.......2000-10-06

I have come accross very few CD's that have 74 minutes of music that I enjoy. This CD is one of those. Mason Jones does a great job on Morceau, everyone likes danse bachannalle, the piano concerto is great, it's just a really enjoyable CD to own. I recommend it highly, it's one of my favorites.

Great Selections, So-So Collection.......2000-06-23

As all good elementary school music teachers know, Saint-Saëns could evoke emotions from a rock. I don't know if it's his masterful command (or creation) of the idioms of music, or whether it's the formal structure of his compositions, but there's never any confusion about how one feels when listening to this Apollo.

This Sony recording supposedly collects his best. It does and it doesn't. The "Danse Macabre"--a perennial Saint Saëns fave--is definitely better than any others on the market--crisper, livelier, and ... er... creepier. And the Bacchanale is also superbly done. (Don't take my word for it though--you can compare these yourself from the various samples.) But as great as these individual pieces are, Sony failed to bring to the "Swan" the rest of the zoo from "Carnivale des Animaux," and, worse, they forgot the "Aquarium," too! Plus, the "Organ Symphony" *must* be heard in its entirety to sound like the serious piece of music that it is.

I haven't found the noumenal Saint-Saëns collection yet. But this one surely isn't phenomenal.

Volume I of the immensely popular Mozart Effect series of music attempts to do no less than "strengthen the mind." One thing is for certain: the music chosen on the disc by author and scholar Don Campbell--excerpts from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 1; Violin Concerto, No. 3; Ein kleine nachtmusik; and others--includes some of the strongest pieces the composer wrote. Though the performers on this disc (Capella Istropolitana, Northern Chamber Orchestra, and violinist Takako Nishizaki) are far from world-class, this is still a delightful collection and one that--at least according to the liner notes--will increase your alertness and perhaps your IQ. Volume II features music for "rest and relaxation," while volume III will "unlock creative spirit." With music this entertaining, who can dispute these claims? --Jason Verlinde

This CD is a compilation of various tunes geared to stimulate the mind. I really enjoy listening to it!

Mozard Effect... Which Songs?.......2005-12-03

It's also important to remember that the Mozard Effect... was mostly studied using Mozart's Sonata in D for two pianos. Although all classical music may have good side effects when it comes to learning and concenrtration and stimulating of the mind, most studies used Mozart's two pianos sonata. Which isn't on this album. And the reasoning behind it's benefits are possibly due to the nature of having "dueling" pianos making complex harmonics. Just remember to buy this because you like Mozard, not because you think you are going to make your children geniouses. That's just a bunch of hype.

It's important to remember that the Mozart effect has not been proven. The behavioural consequences of listening to Mozart is not unique, and can be achieved with any classical music, since the mozart effect has nothing to do with behavioural consequences, but subtle changes in the brain. The pattern of Mozart's music is thought to correspond to a coding mechanism of brain cells that created more dynamic circuits...but remember, it's not proven.

Virtual wonder for academic excellence! Timeless CD!.......2002-02-23

If there is one music CD that will change every person's life, this is it. It is known to enhance a person's concentration. What more could you ask - learning while listening to music. Advice to students: if you want to accumulate academic medals of excellence from grade school to college, if you want to be the best worker you can be - a doctor, a lawyer, programmer, this is the CD to buy. Not even other kind of music - pop, ballad, rock and roll, rap, jazz, can equal the impact this can bring. Taking and passing board examinations, certifications will be a breeze when one combines the Mozart CD with great effort (which becomes effortless) of studying.
