These tracks skip through ambient, idm, and dub without losing the ethereal melodic sensibilities that have become a signature of the Bluetech sound. 6 new tracks of digital bliss from Bluetech, plus a gorgeous remix of the classic 'Prayers For Rain' track from Israeli mastermind J. VIEWZ.

5 out of 5 stars Sensual Sonic Voyage.......2007-01-19

Intriguing textures melt together into a fusion of mind massaging sensuality. The first track builds slowly and playfully introduces new elements at what seems to be a perfect pace with lots of tempo changes to excite the mind.

The warm soothing textures create a place to relax, but it is the musical temptations (intricacies) that make this exciting. This album offers a variety of moods from dub to ambient escapes, yet all seem to capture a silky sensuality that is very inviting.

I will say that "Worthy" has a deep spirituality and seems
to melt this album into a prayer.

~The Rebecca Review

5 out of 5 stars Intricate, pleasing and devoid of throw-away tracks.......2006-06-22

And yet Alchemie Dub and Prayers For Rain tower over the rest. Rarely do I find tracks that continue to resonate differently and that inspire with each play, day after day, year upon year. Prayers For Rain: meandering, strained melody (you could say thirsty for release and continuity) builds to just that - a sudden reversal... you might imagine rain finally pouring on a parched desert. Listen to the samples! And then click buy, lest a little piece of your soul whither away and die.

1 out of 5 stars For the older Cranes fans, you will want this just for the DVD NOT the music........2006-05-20

I have always loved the Cranes. I have been a fan since 1991 and first got to see them when they opened for the Cure. Back then they had released the album WINGS OF JOY following a couple of ep's and SELF NON SELF their first LP. At that time, the Cranes had a trademark lush, semi orchestral sound with Allison's childlike plaintive voice crying out from amidst the swirling, screeching, melancholia of piano overtures, distorted guitars and crashing drums. I grew to expect songs like "Star blood" "Sixth of may" and on their later releases "Clear" "Lilies" etc. Those songs were primal in their sullen despairing intensity. In short back then the Cranes had a sound that was completely elemental and different from what most if not all rock bands were producing at that time.

Sadly this is no longer the case.
I was semi disappointed with POPULATION 4. Many of the things that made their music beautiful, unforgettable and elemental, namely Mark Francomb's screeching, wailing, guitar work, Jim Shaw's savage drumming and Allison's heartfelt wails were gone and have been for all the post POPULATION 4 albums. With each successive release post POPULATION 4, the things that made the Cranes a "darkly intense" and ORIGINAL band have been replaced by: actually audible lyrics,
gentle acoustic guitars,
and downright unoriginal electronica instrumentation that would do well as background music for any indie film or even major commercial. After all, "Astronauts" off of this new album has been used for an AMEX commercial.

The other songs, "K56," "Vanishing point" et al, are faithful to their "new" FUTURE SONGS type sound, which is bland indie rock guitars mixed with beeps, organs and soundscapes of poorly crafted ambiance music. Would a song like "Vanishing Point" or "Streams" be memorable in a few years? I think not. A few of the more standard rock songs such as "Avenue A" sound like anemic versions of the pop songs found on POPULATION for like "Cant get free". The best thing about this set is the DVD. The problem is the Cranes are not performers. They are artisans. That means that the concert footage gets monotonous and the slow motion cuts during some songs become annoying.
My suggestion:
Buy
SELF NON SELF
WINGS OF JOY,
LOVED,
FOREVER
and CRANES EP COLLECTION 1 & 2.
Then you will hear how the Cranes ACTUALLY STARTED OUT sounding. You will hear the passion, the intensity, the awe of their music and then you will wonder how they became pale and wan shells of themselves.

Then you can buy this Particles and Waves CD/DVD set, but now you will have bought it for the video footage and to say that you own as much of the Cranes as a true fan aught to, including a signed copy of their Moon City 7 inch which by the way also sounds just as nice played on 33 1/3 speed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2005-12-02

One of the best CD's i've ever heard !!!!
Excellent songs from one of the most creative bands.

4 out of 5 stars Good album, DVD could have been more, but worth getting overall.......2005-09-14

"Particles & Waves" is by far Cranes' most mellow and "chilled out" album. This is definitely NOT driving music. It will probably take even the most devoted Cranes fan at least a few listens to appreciate it. After all, this is Cranes we're talking about here...with the exception of "Population Four," they're as non-commercial as one can get. And "Particles & Waves" basically follows the same format. Alison Shaw's girlish and innocent voice is still the trademark sound of the band, and it goes very nicely with this collection of songs. There really isn't a way to describe the album other than lush, quiet, melodic and relaxed. If you've followed Cranes up until now, you will probably like this one.

And now to the bonus "Live In London" DVD with the tracks "Fragile," "Future Song," "Flute Song" and "Far Away." Of course, any Cranes fan will be pysched that a professionally-shot official live DVD has finally been released. As expected, visual and audio quality are both excellent. I do have one minor issue though, and it's a technical one. The camera keeps on switching to slow motion. I find this irritating and IMO it somewhat takes away from the whole live feel. I would rather just see the band filmed rather than have to sit through these camera tricks. My other gripe is that I don't see why this DVD couldn't have been of a full-lenght concert. But even if we can accept that it's only 4 songs, why couldn't more features have been included such as interviews or other band footage? I really don't mean to sound like a complainer; these 4 songs are great. It's just that the DVD seems too short.

Prior to this U.S. and Canadian release, a much more pricy U.K. import was available, but without the bonus DVD. If you bought that one, the decision as to whether to also buy this version will solely depend on how much of a Cranes fan you are.

"In the twilight between waking and sleeping, there is the power of self-transformation". Yoga Nidra is a method of complete relaxation and personal transformation. Yoga Nidra, also known as yogic sleep, uses guided meditation and imagery, and body and breath awareness. Yoga Nidra practice opens the door to mental, emotional and physical healing. It assists you in achieving your personal aspirations and spiritual goals. Yoga Nidra works by using a positive affirmation that is repeated through the practice. Yoga Nidra is a kind of sleep, where the mind hovers between consciousness and unconsciousness. The practitioner sleeps and dreams consciously. Yoga Nidra relaxes tensions that accumulate in the muscles, the emotions and the mind, allowing the practitioner to rest deeply. It is one of the easiest methods by which you can reach a state of deep meditation. You will notice results after the very first Yoga Nidra practice. You will be more calm, more peaceful. Repeated practice will deepen your peace of mind. The practice is started by lying down in a comfortable position, on the floor or the bed, with the eyes closed. The practitioner is guided through special visualizations. The visualization practice ends with images that promote healing, peace and calmness. Then the practitioner is gradually transitioned to regular consciousness. The positive affirmation is stated at the beginning and end of the practice.

4 out of 5 stars ..."You're filling me with splinters".......2007-04-11

Bubblemath, the quintet from Minneapolis, are special. Their music is lighthearted, twisted, bizarre, with some insane breaks and weird rhythms all grounded somehow by catchy melodies. Think rock-pop-prog-jazz-avant-garde fierce music that is packed with fun. The sarcastic lyrics poke fun at relationships, nosy neighbors, organized religion, doctors, sperm, and other vital topics. Oh, and the musicianship is killer, these cats can play. What a debut release. Recommend for adventurous music lovers who like Zappa, Mr. Bungle, They Might be Giants, and similar bands.

5 out of 5 stars They are working on a second album.......2007-03-12

OK, so I'm quite biased as my brother's in this band. For those of you wondering, Bubblemath are working on their second album. They are perfectionists and they take awhile to record.

    5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2007-03-05

Utter genius. Unequivocally. I first heard this band on Aural Moon internet radio, and only a couple of tracks was enough before i NEEDED this. And it did not disappoint. Cells Out is one of the most accomplished post-prog era tracks ever recorded. She's no Vegetarian makes me cack myself every time I hear it, and Be Together is one of the finest songs to EVER to have been recorded by any act EVER. Why aren't they massive???

5 out of 5 stars prog or not prog-that's the quandary.......2007-01-29

I heard a track or two on Myspace and had to get this. I'm a sucker for great musicianship, complex music and bonkers lyrics and this has all three. I don't know if they've released anything else , but notwithstanding that, if you want an aural challenge that mixes the lyrical quirkiness of Zappa (such as on "Your disease is nicer" and "Dancing with your pants down")it's here, without the toilet humour Zappa used to employ sometimes. If you like some prog complexity, that's here too, but it doesn't wear you down - instead it entertains and keeps your interest - there's no real wandering off on drawn out solos and building atmospheres. Each track just kicks in and gets on with it.

5 out of 5 stars As great as imagined!!!.......2006-11-06

As soon as I heard this band on myspace I knew I needed the album! I got it as a birthday present and it was as brilliant as I thought it would be! I would recommend this album to anyone, this band has the finest quality music I've heard in a long time. My favourite songs on this album would have to be Be Together and Doll Hammer. Saying that I love the whole album because it is very diverse in style and each song is worth listening to. If you have any doubts in buying this album cast them aside and buy it, it's certainly worth it!

      Album Description

For the last five years Trunk Records have been issuing the great, lost work of pioneering British composer Basil Kirchin. Here is his last album, completed only a couple of weeks before he passed away in late 2005. It proves that Kirchin, even in his mid-'70s, was still very much an experimentalist at the top of his odd game. Kirchin invented ambient music and set the template to which much of today's avant garde music sounds like. Highlights of Particles are many - ''The Atonals'' for example, was made using conversations between musicians that Basil had secretly recorded over the years. These conversations were then processed into music and the results are quite startling. In fact, the whole album is brimming and bursting with odd ideas, new ways and the unique Kirchin sound. The current Trunk favorite is the last, epic ten-minute hypnotic monster simply called ''E+Me.'' It's an obvious homage to his dear wife Esther, who actually sings at the end of this heavily rhythmic, modal tune. Tragically, Esther died a week before this last Kirchin CD was pressed. Particles adds further fuel to the glowing Kirchin legend, and increases his standing up there with all the other groovy weirdos of the world.

4 out of 5 stars Quality Live Band.......2001-10-10

I recently saw the charged particles at the Houston Internation Jazz Festival and was blown away by the fretless bassist'.His notes sounded like beautiful melodies as he worked his slide to perfection. The rest of the band was quality also giving them an awesome live feel. This album captures some of the feeling from their live work but isn't as good. Its worth getting if you love fretless bass work in a jazz fusion setting.

My family and I listened to Charged Particles at Kent State Stark and It was truly a treat for us all, even our seven-year-old. The sound is fabulous, very impressive bass, even for the simple fact that he created it himself. All the musicians were fantasic. We enjoy this CD and are looking forward to seeing them again.

      4 out of 5 stars Energetic Jazz-Fusion.......2004-05-02

This is a very diverse and well-made jazz-fusion record; not too much of any theme. It's a very energetic record- no danger of falling asleep while listening. I must say I'm not a big fan of the synthesizer sound; it sometimes sounds like a computer that's about to explode. A suggestion for the next record: More piano. The songs are relatively short by jazz standards; only one is over ten minutes. With thirteen tracks and a playing time of an hour and twelve minutes, it's certainly worth the investment.
