Jerry Garcia Band [Live]

Jerry Garcia Band [Live]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
If the Grateful Dead was Garcia's day job, then his beloved Jerry Garcia Band was his robe and slippers. Without the "scene" swirling quite as much around the JGB, those shows took on a more informal, laid-back feel that was clearly liberating to Garcia, who with the JGB had the freedom to completely indulge his own tastes. The JGB of Garcia's last decade boasted terrific organist Melvin Seals as Garcia's chief improvisational sidekick, plus the background female soul singers Gloria Jones and Jackie LaBranch and Garcia's old buddy John Kahn on bass. Recorded in 1990 at San Francisco's Warfield Theater--which was nothing short of the JGB's home field--this double-disc set gives a clear idea of the ensemble's breadth: Dylan covers, Motown hits, and blues romps, as well as classic rock, gospel, and reggae numbers, and basically any song that Garcia loved. Of course, there's plenty of solo space provided to Garcia's spiraling guitar, but his passionate vocals on the ballads are also quite moving. The single-disc How Sweet It Is was recorded during the same stretch and is equally as impressive. --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars good stuff, but far from the best JGB recording.......2007-05-07

If you want primo Jerry Garcia live, buy Live at the KeyStone vol 1 or vol 2 and hear Jerry G and Merle Saunders in 1973 in their prime. I loved going to see Jerry's band in many incarnations throughout the 1980s, but his voice and his energy gradually decreased into the 1990s. Years of touring took their toll. His voice on much of this JGB release is very weak and rough compared to his earlier years, and these band members are no match for the great JG Bands of the mid 1970s. Really, skip this one and buy the KeyStone recordings. There is no comparison.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks.......2007-04-25

This CD comes from a series of shows the "Jerry Garcia Band" did at the Warfield in Sam Francisco in 1990. It is 140 minutes and the sound quality is very good. The band consists of John Kahn on bass, Melvin Seals on organ, a drummer and two back up singers.

There are some great tracks on this CD. Garcia and the band are at the best when they do long, enegetic, flowing tunes, like Dear Prudence and Don't Let Go. Dear Prudence is the Beatles tune and is done in that long jam style of the late sizties. It just moves and flows in a marvelous way.

Don't Let Go is a 1950's R&B tune that Jerry Garcia has been playing since 1976 in the various incarnations of the Jerry Garcia Band. By the time this album was released, he had been playing the song for 15 years and has really fine tuned it into a 17 minute masterpiece.

The one Grateful Dead tune the band does in Deal. Even though the Dead has done this song much better, this version of Deal is still very good, with a blistering guitar solo.

As for the rest of the songs on the album, they are all covers of other peoples music. In most cases, the originals are better than Garcia's (except for the nice Garcia solo thrown in here and there).

For instance, Garcia's version of the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, isn't as good at The Band's original version, or the two live versions the Band has out on record. Garcia's version of Los Lobos' Evangaline is especially weak. I would rather hear the Los Lobos version any day. It is played with much more energy and is much more interesting. And, I still prefer Peter Tosh's version of Stop That Train.

Dylan and Dead just don't go together. I don't know why, but 2 of the most important artists in rock history just do not meld. The Dylan and Dead live album is just a horrible mess. And here, Garcia does not do justice to the 4 Dylan songs he plays. The only one that comes off decent is Tangled Up In Blue. But that song from early in Dylan's career is so good, it is almost impossible to mess up.

I know people are going to be mad at me (at mark my review as "not helpful") for saying some derogatory things about Garcia. There are some excellent tracks on this set, but it shouldn't be ignored that there are some songs that aren't as good as the original versions by the original artists, and at times they can be a little boring and tedious.

This CD is currently out of print (in 2007), but I think a new "special edition" will be available soon.

5 out of 5 stars a big mix of nice songs.......2007-02-10

I like Dylan so much that having four of his songs in a live performance is more than I need to be pickled pink. Jerry Garcia is playing the guitar solos on all these songs, with just drums, a bass guitar, organ or keyboards, and two backup singers to back up his lead vocals, but the skill with which the music just keeps coming, song after song, is impressive. The vocals are geared to saying what he means with a bit of variation from tunes that I am familiar with, but his voice is something I've grown used to, the price I pay to find out what all these songs are about. The guitar is a great instrument when someone really knows how to play it, which Jerry did well. He added a lot to these songs. When you want a beautiful part to come along, just wait for it.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening.......2007-02-05

This album just keeps getting better from beginning to end. The band tightens up as the show progresses and you can tell they're really feeling the music. Jerry's voice is pretty damn good here considering the time period. There's not one song on this album I don't love. It's a lot more mellow than The Dead, but you'll fall right into the groove, especially if you've smoked a little something. I have to say, the backup singers are the MVP's of this album.

5 out of 5 stars A gift from Ol' Saint Jerry.......2006-10-04

Right before Christmas last year, my oldest daughter was not yet four, I pointed out a big picture of Jerry Garcia on the cover of a book at Barnes and Noble. She said, "Hey, Jerry Garcia looks just like Santa Clause." Then she asked if we could either visit Santa Clause or Jerry Garcia before Christmas next year. I replied, no, we couldn't, because Jerry Garcia is dead and "some people believe Santa Clause is just make believe," or words to that effect. It probably was not my greatest moment in parenting, but I try not to lie to my kids and I have mixed feelings about the Santa Clause thing for reasons I won't go into here. There was a pregnant pause, and I worried I had traumatized her with my bluntness, but she seemed unfazed. A moment later, studying the picture again, she amended her observation: "Actually, Jerry Garcia looks different than Santa Clause because Santa Clause has a hole in his beard where his mouth is." Fair enough.

The Grateful Dead were a unique and special thing, but by the eighties, it had grown too large, taken on a life of its own. Too many people were making too much money, and too many lives depended on the touring. So, on inertia and psychedelic fumes, the band played on. And the kids, they dance and shake their bones. But Jerry Garcia's heart was not in it. There were sporadic great shows, nights where all the individual streams came together just right and the magic happened. But you had to listen to a lot of mediocre jamming to get to those moments. You had to accept that you were there for the experience, and the band was there to provide the accompaniment. Any higher expectations and it was a set-up.

When you listen to the Jerry Garcia Band, you can hear the difference. Not that there still weren't off nights. But freed of the burden of the Dead, the Dead scene and the Dead repertoire, the alchemical magic was bubbling through the music. Jerry could take a melody and make it something different, something special. The ensemble he put together in the late eighties and early nineties played some great, soulful and beautiful music, and this compilation is a nice example of the best of it.

Melvin Seals is terrific on the organ and Kahn does a good job on the bass. You also get quality background singing, something noticeably missing from the Grateful Dead since the band cleared puberty. The Way You Do the Things You Do, Dear Prudence, Deal, My Sisters and Brothers, and an exuberant Tangled Up In Blue are my personal favorites. There are also plenty of those slow, sad ballads that Jerry does so well.

Buy this, listen to it often, have fun, be safe.

Album Description

Compiled from two back-to-back shows in Union, New Jersey, this historic live recording captures three CDs' worth of eclectic performances by the stripped-down quartet configuration of the JGB. Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter takes vocals on his compositions "Promontory Rider" and "Tiger Rose." Packed with key originals and plenty of covers, it's an essential snapshot of Jerry at his peak.

One of rock's true icons, Grateful Dead lead guitarist, vocalist, and goodwill ambassador Jerry Garcia pursued an eclectic array of folk, bluegrass, roots-rock, and R&B-influenced solo projects throughout his career. Recorded both solo and with the Jerry Garcia Band, his albums include a slew of classic covers and many songs that became an integral part of the Grateful Dead's live set.

5 out of 5 stars No Money for Koontz.......2007-04-25

I have spent thousands of dollars on Jerry and Dead shows, albums, etc. since my first Dead show in 1973.

I was about to purchase this item on Amazon when I saw the references to the Garcia Estate aka. Koontz.

I believe she is the antithesis of the Dead spirit and is only looking to make a buck. As a result, I pass on this purchase and will only buy through GDM - non Koontz profit.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best JGB.......2007-02-26

3 stars is way too harsh for this recording, but there are better JGB discs out there. I'd start with the 1991 double disc recordings, then I'd go back the Saunders/Garcia era. Check out the Legion of Mary vol. 1 from Rhino, or the old Keystone discs. The problem with these discs, is that it's all Garcia. It's Jerry jamming, with 3 other guys backing him up. There are great moments in it, but in my opinion there is just nothing too special about this show that warrants this release.

5 out of 5 stars Nice jammin'.......2006-06-30

I bought this based on how I liked another JGB cd (welcome to our world) and am pleased with the sounds on this one. Garcia shows his genius on these extended jams. I get an upbeat feeling while listening to this music. Even the synthesizer music, which is corny in the context of current synthetic sounds, adds to the groove. All three discs are great, especially if you are looking for some great guitar jamming sounds. If you like this one, I encourage you to take a look at the JGB's "Welcome to our world".

4 out of 5 stars wow........2006-06-01

i can't believe this is out on cd. i just stumbled across it today! my late husband and i had this on tape years and years ago. absolutely my favorite dead/jerry related show. but the one we had.. had masterpiece, dear prudence and russian lullaby on it. it's really too bad they didn't include those with this release and it's the reason i'm giving it four stars. i did however find the complete version at the jerry garcia store. the extra disc is included free and has the late show.. entitled "way after midnight."

4 out of 5 stars Not even close to the 1991 JGB Release.......2006-03-01

Kean is a better than average performance but pales in comparison to the 1991 2 CD JGB release which is the Cornell 1977 of JGB shows. Kean lacks electricity and magic typically found at the better shows.

This is the third official CD set to chronicle the Garcia Band's early '90s period and as such it fills in the gaps not covered by Jerry Garcia Band and How Sweet It Is. Focused more, it seems, on choosing songs not found on those previous two releases, it does not find Garcia in peak form all the way through. Still, there are many highlights across these 15 cover songs, such as the jaunty "Russian Lullaby" and the super soulful "Ain't No Bread in the Breadbox." Interestingly enough, 6 of the 10 songs Garcia first included on 1974's studio album Compliments appear here, in addition to late-period additions to the repertoire like the aforementioned "Breadbox," the Manhattans' 1980s soul hit "Shining Star," and Daniel Lanois's "The Maker." Garcia's voice may not have held up over the years, but you can't argue with the emotion he invests in these performances. Not an essential entry all in all, but a valuable complement to the other sets of similar vintage. --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars Just not that good.......2006-02-23

Sorry but I just can't get into it even though I'm a big Jerry fan. I ordered it back when it was first released and listened to it a few times before putting it away. A year or so later I tried to get into it again - no luck. Most of the time I end up giving anything associated with Garcia 5 stars. Not this time. This is full of lack luster performances that never get off the ground. I really cannot even believe I'm giving it 3 stars. I just spot it 3 stars because you get to hear Jerry's guitar. And the cover art is almost insulting. It looks like some bad imitation of 60's art. I cannot believe Jerry would have been proud of this disaster. Buy something else from him.

5 out of 5 stars Shining Star, Hidden Gem.......2005-09-25

Shining Star is a hidden gem. I recommend it to anyone who wants to see the real Jerry in action wih his band. The guitarists and background singers make the show a soulful jam session. This CD rocks!

2 out of 5 stars I agree that this is pickin' over the leftovers..........2003-10-18

With all the JGB shows in circulation, THIS is the best they could come up with? It's a lame compilation with some great moments, but a lot of filler. Someone else mentioned that this is a case of people pickin' over Jerry's leftovers and, compared to something like "Don't Let Go," which was phenomenal, I have to agree. Don't waste your money on this...

4 out of 5 stars Pls. buy this wonderful cd!.......2003-08-16

I've followed the Dead and Jerry since '68. I'm writing this review because I see that others have, well, trashed this cd. NO! This is Jerry again celestial. As the banner over the Avalon read in '68: They're not the best at what they do; nobody does what they do!. Still true and still true of the Jerry Garcia Band. BUY this cd. Wait till you hear how Jerry and the band take the Stones' Lets Spend the Night Together and make it into a so-sweet love ballad! Price of admission is worth it right there!

5 out of 5 stars burning in the eyes of the Maker.......2003-03-21

I like this CD, but `The Maker' is beyond phenomenal. It's one of the best recordings I've heard of Jerry. I'd equate with Visions of Johanna on Phil Zone, Morning Dew on Europe '72, or some of the songs in the live Warfield Garcia-Grissman '91 - '92 shows. For `The Maker' alone, it's an absolute must have. But overall I like the whole thing.

A particularly spry, nimble, and spacious incarnation of the Jerry Garcia Band is chronicled on this double-disc release, the first official CD release to present a JGB show in order and in its entirety. Recorded at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater on May 21, 1976, the band includes Garcia's Dead mates Keith and Donna Godchaux (on acoustic piano and vocals respectively) plus longtime bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt. It's one of the few Garcia ensembles to feature piano rather than organ, and everyone has plenty of room to maneuver here, as evidenced especially on a wonderfully funky, airy, slow-grooving "That's What Love Will Make You Do." Four of the cuts come from the then-recently released Reflections. Though many of these tunes remained staples of Garcia's repertoire for the rest of his life, there are a few gems that did not: the extended boogies on "After Midnight" and "Lonesome and a Long Way from Home," the Donna showcase on the blues chestnut "Strange Man," and the bonus cut, a romping "Mighty High" recorded four months later. Those fans familiar with only later versions of the JGB will be pleasantly surprised upon hearing this agile, streamlined crew at work. --Marc Greilsamer

Loaded the good ol ipod shuffle up on GD music tonight, and "mission in the rain" off of this cd popped up first. Wow! Jumped back to itunes to see what CD this track was off of, and lo-and behold "Don't let go". I can't for the life of me even remember when I got this album, but now I'm re-aqqanting myself with each and every track. The other reviews are on the mark, start from the beginning and see how this show progresses. Tight. Innnovative. Solid. Glad I own it, since it seems hard to track down here at Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars One of My All Time Favorites.......2007-03-01

If I could own only one JGB CD, this would be it. Marvelously tight performances by all involved, beautiful jamming -- a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Top rate Live Garcia.......2007-01-08

I put in this review, because after browsing around the Garcia selections I was very surprised that this album is not one of the top selling live albums and is not reviewed as highy as it deserves. I've had it since it was originally released and keep going back to it in spite of aquiring a number of discs from the Pure Jerry series.
If you enjoy listening to Garcia play guitar, this album is an excellent selection. Live at Keystone Vol's 1 and 2 are my alltime favorites for listening to soulful, emotional guitar. But if you need an alternative, this album is the best of the Garcia choices. Jerry is at the top of his form both vocally and on the guitar. The band is very tight (for a Garcia band) and in good form. Yes, a few of the tracks are played at a very slow pace, but this adds to the laid back feel that Garcia fans have come to enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars dreadful grate.......2006-08-15

SLOOOOOOOOOWWWWW. The songs go from slow to slower. Donna can't sing live, never really could, no matter what the "music fan" below says. Granted it was ths sound system (supposedly). But was she really that much better in the studio. Keith was a great addition to the Dead and Garcia Bands sound (until the last year, when he seemed asleep at the wheel most of the time). This is hardly the best to be found, of any of the parties involved. Save 5 stars for when they are deserved. They become meaningless when thrown around too often.

5 out of 5 stars Fifty bucks for a used copy?.......2004-05-29

Highway robbery.
But it for $19.00 (plus s&h) on the Dead's own website, save money, and support the people who make the music.
And by the way, it is a great album.

4 out of 5 stars It's not Jerry but it's not bad either.......2006-02-19

What this is - Melvin Seals, Gloria Jones and other members of Jerry's solo band in a live setting after Garcia's death. It's really pretty good jamming and performances despite Jerry's absence. Deadheads will of course find this of interest as will "jam Band" fans. I don't get some of the one star reviews I see here- this is good music.

4 out of 5 stars sure, its not jerry, but it is still good.......2005-12-23

The purists in the world will always complain that this isn't Jerry, and they are right, but hey, he's dead and there's nothing we can do about it. To be honest, i would rather listen to his friends honor his memory wiht good music than the hacks of skynrd and others who can't even keep up with their late brother's chops. nonetheless, the gospel section is smoking as is "don't let go". Musically, it is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Our World... On The Other Side..........2005-09-23

Although our man Jerry has left us, this album is reminiscent of all that is true to his legacy. He may not be in the band in person, but in spirit... you can agree that they kept with all tradition of JG. There will never be a substitute for Jerry, but regardless of personal feelings, this band will always be part of the DEAD HEAD CLAN. Be True!

VIVA LA JERRY! Keep His Spirit Alive... Forever!

1 out of 5 stars deceptive - avoid this CD.......2002-03-05

No offense to the musicians who put this together. It's listenable bar band music, but Jerry Garcia it ain't. Nowhere on the cover does it warn you that it's his old band playing cover versions of their old hits. I have it, have never gotten through the whole Cd. I'll give it to you if you pay the postage. Not worth even thinking about.

1 out of 5 stars Where's Jerry?.......2001-12-27

It is, at best, a bit disingenuous to market an album by "JGB", even though Mr. Garcia ain't on it. At worst, it's a blatant...
