With All Wood and Stones, veteran composers/vocalists/musicians John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley have taken songs that are practically hard-wired into our collective pop culture consciousness and put a uniquely fresh spin on them. That these songs are vintage Rolling Stones masterpieces composed by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards makes the duo's sonic reinvention of them all the more remarkable. This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

Being a long time fan of the Rolling Stones (I've seen them live five times through the years), I have always felt that they did their songs the way they should be done. All Wood and Stones by John Batdorf & James Lee Stanley has certainly changed my mind. I didn't realize that the songs of Keith and Mick were so musical. Rockers yes, but so very musical? I was overwhelmed by the CD. Great acoustic guitar work, well great ensemble work all around; bass, percussion, drums, and such great sounding acoustic guitars. But the vocals and the arrangements are the real surprize. These are stones songs like you've never heard them, as if they were written for these guys or maybe even by these guys. The songs are the true stars of the album, but my hat is off to Batdorf & Stanley. They have created a very fresh and original take on music that has been living inside of you and me for all our lives. Truly great stuff.

well, i have to admit that of all the cd's i've ever recorded this is one of my favorites, so i am biased. and being one of the artists who did the recording makes me even more biased. that being said, give the cd a listen. i've never heard anyone do anything like this to the rolling stones songs. i don't think that anyone ever considers what brilliant songwriters jagger and richards are. every song on this collection is a wonder. the songs are the true stars of the cd. and what john and i did to them to make them our own is only more corroboration that the songs are wonderful. you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, as they say. and this is the stones music as pure silk. enjoy and let me know what you think.

I wasn't a Rolling Stones fan when I was younger; and I'm not a Rolling Stones fan now. However, some of their songs entered my life when I was in my teens and stayed with me, like 'As Tears Go By', and 'Ruby Tuesday' (the latter being the only Rolling Stones recording -a 45 vinyl- I own). One cannot be a part of our muzak-ridden world and not hear a Rolling Stones song somewhere at least once a day. Though I don't personally like the Stones as a band or as celebrities, I will admit that they made a huge contribution to the growth of the music that came out of the 1960's and `70's and 80's, and continuing to present day.

That's one of the reasons why "All Wood and Stones" is wonderful for me, because it takes 11 early hits from the Rolling Stones and makes them accessible to me and others like me. Songs I never would have listened to (heard perhaps, but not "listened to") otherwise. What James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf (currently two of my favorite solo artists) bring to these eleven songs is faultless harmony of voice and guitar, clear distinct guitar notes - sometimes in tandem and sometimes in counterpoint, words I can make sense out of, and really cool acoustic guitar and vocal arrangements that bring something new and accessible to the old songs.

I highly recommend this CD to any- and every- music lover throughout the world ("All Wood and Stones" is available worldwide from Aezra Records) whether you're a Rolling Stones fan or not. I'm fairly sure that everyone will find something to like (if not the whole thing!).

Technically a very clean album. It has a good selection of tunes, particularly for the history buff, however some of the polished choral pieces sound funny when you think that most of them are essentially folk tunes that should be sung with a somewhat less practiced air. Overall, worth the purchase for historical value and good production.

Protest Songs of the 1770s.......2002-01-24

The music that was composed and performed during the American Revolution is presented on this 1 hour CD. Since I was a child, I've enjoyed hearing the drum and fife corps on the Fourth of July and during the Presidential inaugurations, and this CD has several good drum and fife marches. Other selections are 18th century protest songs about taxation ("A taxing we will go...} and British tyranny. There are also some good harpsichord numbers contained on this CD. The musicians are excellent and the sound is clear. I don't know how many common people got to hear music like this during the Revolution, but at least this CD gives the 21st Century listener the opportunity enjoy the "popular" music of 200 years ago. Classical music lovers will enjoy this CD too.

Important work of musical heritage.......1999-02-25

I fell in love with this CD from the first track.The music of the American Fife Ensamble is stirring, I felt positivly rebelious. The satarical songs based on the tunes "British Grenadires" and "Hearts of Oak" are like the paintings of W. Hogarth set to music. You should have more than a cursory knowledge of the 18th century though, to fully enjoy this CD

A good source of enjoyment and education.......1999-02-23

We will never know exactly how these songs sounded when the citizens of Boston were darting black looks to the British regulars on the streets, but I would wager quite a bit that these renditions come pretty close. Of course the "American" accents are an anachronism; but most listeners might be puzzled to hear British accents used for these anti-British songs (with one exception, composed by a British regular!)I have already used selections from this CD to a groups of 3rd and 5th graders and they loved it. So teachers, take note, but be sure they have the words in front of them. A very valuable educational tool that also happens to be a very enjoyable program to hear for its own sake. And as with most New World releases, the annotations alone are worth the price of the product.

Beautiful.......2005-06-04

Another triumph for Anuna- this album incorporates more instruments than other albums, but it is done so tastefully and it really adds a whole new dimension to the crisp voices of Anuna.

Definitely worth a place in any music library!

Different, but still superb.......2003-12-29

Unlike most of the albums Anuna has put out so far, most tracks on this album are for choir AND orchestra. The harmonies are definitely 20th century, but they are pleasing to the ear almost always add to the already excellent sound of the choir. Of particular note are the tracks "The Great Wood" (available for download on Anuna's site if you're curious to hear before buying) and the final track, "1901".

Although the sound may be different than what you have come to expect from previous albums, I would still recommend this one wholeheartedly.

I bought this album when it was still only available in Ireland, and it was well worth the extra money then. Like Cynara and Deep Dead Blue, this CD has more modern music, including some songs composed by Anuna members, as well as the more traditional music they're known for. Perfect for studying or working to.

Somewhat disappointing.......2005-09-25

There are some unique and interesting songs of this album. Unfortunately the performance does not shine. I found the singing and accompaniment a bit slow and monotonous and uninspired. Furthermore, it was difficult to understand the words at times (indistinct enunciation). There are a few exceptions: tracks 3, 4, 9, 20, 21 I gave 3 stars in iTunes; all the rest got two stars or less. If you want beautiful, traditional choral music, I recommend any of the albums featuring the Cambridge Singers over this collection.

An album celebrating harvest's end, Home to Thanksgiving is a harvest itself, selected from nearly a dozen Hillier CDs. The only thing that suffered as the result of Paul Hillier's separation from the Hilliard Ensemble was his albums' graphic design. By leaving Hilliard, the men's vocal group he'd helmed, Hillier abandoned the elegant packaging afforded him by ECM Records. On ECM, his penchant for plainchant was matched by stark photography, lending a steady visual horizon while his group darted maverickly between liturgical music and Arvo Pärt's minimalism.

Somehow at Harmonia Mundi, a new Hillier collection calls for a Currier and Ives painting. So be it. Hillier listeners understand that no marketing feat can fill the gaps that punctuate the 12th-century "O quanta qualia"; only a faith in his distinct musical agenda (or, perhaps, His) can bridge such pauses. There is communal cheer ("The Apple Tree," dating from the Revolution, has a catchy chorus), but it's tempered by introversion. Secular Puritan John Cage shows up, having set lyrics by Thoreau. That follows a 16th-century snippet of Thomas Tallis, and is followed itself by a 12th-century piece that attenuates 13 syllables of benediction for over four minutes. Currier and Ives may greet listeners at the cabin door, but Hillier waits inside with a sermon straight out of Jonathan Edwards. --Marc Weidenbaum

Truly joyous music.......2005-10-27

This is a wonderful collection of music for thanksgiving - not just for the holiday, but for everyday. From the energetic opening, "Tis By Thy Strength The Mountains Stand", to the haunting "Evening Hymn" at close, this music is pure joy to listen to. The styles are quite varied and cover everything from plainchant to a somewhat modern take on Thoreau, and it is all very well performed. It is music that sends the soul soaring in thanksgiving to God.

A GEM FROM THE PRINCESS THEATRE . . . .......2005-09-07

I agree with Mr. Behrens that this recording is a "must" for anyone serious about the American musical theatre, but I found the whole thing a trifle boring. (I would have given it 3 stars, but I was worried about turning people off.) The performances are splendid, and the original orchestrations for 10 pieces are a delight to hear. Upon hearing the overture, you might think you're listening to a superb digital restoration of an early 1900's recording. It's a gas.

Mr. Behrens states that the score contains neither a hit nor a miss and is an "improvement on the bubbleheaded competition," but the operettas of Sigmund Romberg, Rudolph Friml, Victor Herbert, et.al, were overflowing with far better songs than Jerome Kern would write for this or any other Princess Theatre Show. Many of the lyrics for "Eddie" are pretty inane, typical for the time, however. Kern wrote a much better score two years later for "Leave It to Jane" (1917), lyrics provided by long time collaborator P.G. Wodehouse. (A wonderful recording of the 1958 revival of "Jane" is available on AEI Records.) With Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II, Jerome Kern wrote "Show Boat" in 1927, giving us the first truly great American musical. He also contributed some of Hollywood's most memorable songs, including "A Fine Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."

My fellow reviewer from Monterey Mass. hit the nail on the head. Though not as good as some of the "Princess Theater" shows to come ("Oh, Boy," "Oh, Lady, Lady," and the rest--this musical is quite an improvement on the bubbleheaded competition it had not only in its own time but long after it. It is also a relief from the "musical play" that replaced the musical comedy. Not a single hit song and not a single poor one in the whole show that was a pioneer of the great "integrated" shows to come, not the least of which would be Kern's own "Show Boat." This is a must for every serious collection of Broadway shows.

Wonderful version of a charming show.......1998-09-08

This is a 1915 show but it has more snap and charm than the current long melodramas that masquerade as entertainment
