Why only three stars? Well, it was just a matter of my own musical taste. I didn't like anything that wasn't punk-y or rock-y on this album. That said, it's super-easy just to skip over the songs you don't like, to get to the ones you enjoy.

This soundtrack is good, but it should ahve had some beautiful songs on it, like "You get me" by Michelle branch, "Hello" by sugarbomb...by the way, joe, the song when she calls him and he doesn't reply then Taj enters is "Okay" by Swirl 360. Music fan, the song when they kiss is "Hello" by sugarbomb, and the one that says "Love is in the air" is "Girl on the roof" by David Mead

It was time for J. Mascis to move on from his Dinosaur Jr. days. He may never leave the comfortable environs of his home studio in Amherst, Massachusetts, but at least he can import folks like My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields to add sonic deviation. He'll always sing in that anguished whine that suggests someone is twisting his arm behind his back (or sometimes he'll sound surprisingly like Alice Cooper). As long as he keeps the guitars choogling with his trademark hyperdistorted tone, he'll be OK. "Same Day" employs this strategy with the expected results. "Where'd You Go" and "Back Before You Go" have a Southern rock vibe running through them. Even more revealing, however, are the moodier pieces in which the arrangements head into psychedelic territory ("Waistin," "Ground Me to You") with swirling keyboards and subtler guitar moves. An old dog may not learn new tricks, but he can add some nice twists to the old ones. --Rob O'Connor

A huge leap foward.......2004-07-10

With Dinosaur Jr behind him, J Mascis continues to do the solo act along with the likes of Mike Watt and Kevin Shields. This band is like an indie collective almost, with Mike being in the Minutemen, Kevin in My Bloody Valentine and J being in Dinosaur Jr (all this needs is Thurston Moore and they're set).

I heard many good things about this album. First good thing I heard was that J didn't change his styles of distorted, loud and heavy guitaring but what he didn't change he fixed. I heard that keyboards run through most of the songs and the last I heard was that the lyrics and vocals have lightened up.

All of the above was true. From listening to Same Day and hearing J do his trademark solos and scratchy vocals, I knew I was in for a treat. Wastin really changed the flow with the chorus that includes some original keyboarding, then we go where the album really picks up at Where'd you Go, which for some reason, reminds me of the old Dinosaur Jr. I think Where'd you Go is J's message to us after three years absense. Grand me to you slows things down a bit, sounds like the Dinosaur Jr from the Without a Sound era almost.

But the next track changes the whole album. Ammaring. It starts with some easy guitar and a keyboard running along with it, the drumming and base are unusually louder then usual. About a minute in J runs through the first solo which sounds slightly distorted then the song just bangs into another LOUDER guitar but maintaining the same easy flow. Another solo which fits the song more. But as J starts singing louder everything picks up then he unleashes the loudest and most powerful solo I've ever heard him so. It's crazy and very distorted. The whole song is just amazing to listen too. It's the defining song of the album, and I'm shocked that this wasn't a number one hit.

Then we run into All the Girls. A slower song that is also reminisent of the Without a Sound/Hand it Over era of Dinosaur Jr. Wait for the distorted middle that runs with a keyboard, that's awseome. I'm not Fine, the next track, is just pure guitar power. Along with a pretty nutty ending. But then things mellow out as much as they slow down with Can I take this On. This song is the nicest song I've ever heard J do. Includes a keyboard, banjo and a barking dog, simply harmless rock. Does the Kiss fit is another great song with a keyboard that runs through it. I love that track personally like Ammaring.

But J tries something new with the closing title track More Light. He (and Kevin Sheilds) completely cranks everything up too 10+ and just lets loose with LOUD distorted guitaring that I just can't define by typing. It's amazing and I think J should try something like that again.

J Mascis would go on to follow this album up with Free so Free which is a HUGE fall back from the pure power and energy this album had.

I recommend this album to anyone new to J Mascis or Dinosaur Jr.

One of the most amazing albums ever.......2002-12-13

OK, first off, J mascis is a MUSICAL GENIUS. He is an excellent composer, and although the majority of his better releases were with dino jr, the songs on this album are great. I've been listening to "Ground me to you" over and over, because i can relate to it completely, as i am still struggling to get this one girl to love me, but anyway........ The piano solo on that song, combined with the crack in his voice as he whines"i dont want another picture, i need you" is enough to make you weep, and is worth the price of all the songs.

Welcome Back J.......2001-09-05

I'm the biggest basher of post Lou Barlow era Dinosaur Jr. around. I always felt that J lost a few steps after Bug and a few thousand after Where You Been. Sure the later albums had some cool tracks, but the majority was not good. This is J's strongest album in almost a decade...hands down! The production is fresh and clean (Kevin Shields! When is the next MBV album???) and there are some new sounds floating around which hit the mark. J, you've won me back to the fold!

True to the Dinosaur Jr. legacy.......2001-08-03

Although Dinosaur Jr. is now extinct, J.Mascis shows he hasn't forgotten where he came from on "More Light," his first album with new band, the Fog. From the opening crunch of "Same Day," the album delivers the intense sound, energy and emotive guitar work that have come to define J's work. In fact, after a single listen, it almost sounds as if "More Light" is nothing more than a follow-up to "Hand it Over," the last Dinosaur Jr. album. That of course would not be bad by any means. But after a second, third and fourth listen, it becomes apparent that J. has broken away slightly from the Dinosaur Jr. pattern and created an even better product. As difficult as that may be to believe, take a few spins with "More Light" and you'll find a sharper, cleaner edge to songs that previously would have been lost in a maze of distorted mayhem. At the same time, however, the album never loses the intensity, earnestness and "from the heart" fret-work that characterize J. Mascis. His lyrics and singing style, as well, continue to evoke emotion in a way that no other artist has ever been able to do (at least no one I've ever heard). Check out "Same Day," "Waistin," "Back Before You Go," "Ground Me to You," and "Ammaring" to see what I mean. To me, this is my favorite J. Mascis album, one that the majority of Dinosaur Jr. fans will love. I never tire of playing it. And after seeing J perform it live a few months ago in Houston, I doubt that will ever change (If you ever get the chance to see him play, DO IT! He's absolutely unbelievable!)

The Return of a Master.......2001-05-12

Yes J. Mascis is back! And I have to admit this CD is as good as anything Dinosaur Jr. put out, if not better. The songs are hook driven, but his guitar still has the pop that gives these nuggets bite. And how can he actually be getting better at playing the guitar. He sounds even more accomplished than before. This guy is truly one of the best and needs more recognition for it. And the recording and production of this CD has put forth an explosion and swirl of sound and distortion that compliment his guitar chops and his wining vocals. Well done. If you are a past fan of Dinosaur Jr., this is essential. If you are fan of the guitar driven alternative music of today, you need to pick this up and listen to one of the founders. This CD is worth many many spins on your CD player. Oh and make sure you turn it up, I am sure Mr. Mascis would want this played loud.

this album is simply great from start to finish.great songwriting and excellent musicianship throughout.i felt compelled to write this after reading reviews from others who obviously do not get it.being a fan of true country music for many years,having seen all of the greats ,legends,and relativley unknowns perform,ones such as johnny cash,merle haggard,george jones,dwight yoakam,and dale watson,i can say that bsojc deserves to be counted in that group,after seeing them live recently at fitzgeralds in berwyn,illinois,where they put on one of the best shows i have ever seen(i have seen all types of rock, metal ,and blues shows as well)i can honestly say they are a great live act as well as really great guys to meet and speak with.i reccomend picking up this cd and giving it a real good listen.

Country for those who listen to rock.......2002-11-30

The band sounds like a rock band trying to do what they think is country. Almost every ages-old cliche of honky tonk music is evident with songs about truck driving, "Having every waitress" and the obligatory drinking songs.

I would recommend Dale Watson, The Derailers or Stan Martin before them.

Modern straight-up country, 'cept better........2002-08-31

The title here is certinaly misleading; one is likely to read it thinking they're going to find another entry in the new and wonderful world of dark, back-alley, grindout punk/alt country coming out of Chicago and elsewhere these days. But if you're looking for something in the vein of The Blacks or Split Lip Rayfield, you won't find it here. Instead you get well written and well played, if a little uninteresting, modern radio friendly country music without the mawkish and overproduced pop sensibility of the stuff we actually get to hear on the radio. Texas Sun, Memphis Woman, and 440 Horses aren't songs that are going to redefine the genre of modern country, and they aren't going to shed any particularly new light on the world of roots country, but they're still great songs. They ain't Ralph Stanley, they ain't Jon Langford, and they sure as ...ain't Johnny Cash, but they're definitely worth a listen.

The Most Undeserved Name In The History Of Music.......2002-05-04

Having read the review of the band Nine Pound Hammer ...describing Nine Pound Hammer as "the bastard sons of Johnny Cash," I was expecting something interesting and edgy. I was very disappointed. Whereas,Johnny Cash's voice and music can not be mistaken for any other,this sounds like average cookie cutter country band trying to fly under the banner of "alternative." It's the equivalent of calling the group WHAM!, the bastard sons of Johnny Thunders.

Power Blues Glam Against The Machine..........2007-01-17

Get this record. John Hogg and the boys created a classic. It's a shame the have broken up. Hogg is currently playing in the UK with a talented group of fellows. The project is called Hogg...

At anyrate, the roller coaster ride of sonic joy starts off with the guitar rock slam, "My Degeneration".. A perfect track to get you moving..

"Hanging Around", the second track, picks up where the track leaves off....Truely a treat. The third song, "Slide"..I don't know..I cant describe it, except to say that it is my favorite song...EVER!

It stays great from there.. I have no idea why this group never achieved commercial success..Lack of promotion maybe? None the less, Carnival, as well as their debut record "Moke" (Superdrag in the UK) are two of the greatest records Ive had the pleasure to listen to. Buy 'em, and get ready for a wild ride.

I just want to let everybody know that this band is un-believably good. I saw them in Salt Lake, opening for Kings X. And I tell you what, I walked out of there a much bigger fan of Moke than Kings X. I own both of Mokes' albums and my friends and I have been listening to them for the past four years. Incredible vocals and harmonies, songwriting at it's best, this is a very talented band and if you are even slightly interested in them, trust me on this one and buy the albums. Both of them are very good but I especially recommend CARNIVAL. TODAY, STRANGE DAYS, HANGING AROUND, and SLIDE are just a few of best songs on this album. I wish they would come to SLC again. Spread the word.

Moke - Carnival.......2003-06-28

I got the chance to see Moke twice while they were on tour with King's X. Once in Chicago, where they played in the Metro, a club with sound quality that has never been above poor, and in Houston at Fitzgeralds. They sounded superb both times, and immediately after the Houston show I went out and bought Carnival. It is definitely one of my favorites apart from the King's X albums and a few Podunk albums. Their vocals are great and their harmonies are superb. I would highly recommend purchasing this album as I have enjoyed it for about two years now.

an album worthy of the highest praise.......2003-04-11

If you're one of those people who likes to uncover buried treasure......this is your band. Carnival is a record that received little or no promotion when it was released a couple of years ago, and it is a shame. This kind of talent comes along once in a great while. The production on this record is crisp, powerful, dense and flawless. Songs like "Slide" and "So Much Better" will hypnotize you and then pounce on you the very moment you feel safe. John Hogg is one of, if not THE best vocalist in the last ten years. Do you think this is just hype? Listen to the record. He's one part Robert Plant, One part Bob Marley, a dash of Chris Robinson and ten parts pure originality and soul....amazing. Again, the Brits are coming to save rock and roll. Please treat yourself to this experience. Highlight tracks: "Hanging Around", "Liar", "Slide", "I Don't Mind".

Amazing Album, Amazing Band.......2002-07-08

Moke released it's 2nd album Carnival in July 2001, but was underpromoted & performed sadly because of it. Despite this, Carnival is my absolute favorite cd. This band constantly whips out simple & melodic beauties in short 3 1/2 minute packages, which leave you wanting more. Moke's music is a combination of beautiful Beatles-type 3 part harmonies, heavy guitars, with a solid rhythm section to back it all up. In addition, they are always mixing up the time signatures to add greater depth to the music.

If you like the samples you hear, I guarantee you'll love the album. "Slide" still gives me goose bumps when the electric guitar kicks in. "My Degeneration" was the first (and only) single released, also a very good rockin' song. "So Much Better" & "I Don't Mind" are both incredibly powerful songs.

It's rare to find an album that excites me lyrically & musically, but this is one of them.

If you like this album also check out their debut album... in America it's called simply "Moke", in the UK "Superdrag." Bloody Brilliant!

Like Hüsker Dü and the Replacements, Soul Asylum started out as a high-voltage Minneapolis punk band in 1981. He still has "Soul"........2005-04-12

I always liked Soul Asylum, but the only reason I got this is because I found it for a few bucks. What a score. True, there's nothing on this disc that actually rocks, but I really like this new sound, and think Dave sounds as good as ever. I liken "Faces And Names" to the first solo albums from Chris Robinson and Chris Cornell, not as great as their former bands, but still very good, and a must for the real fans. "Teach Me To Breathe" must have been the single from this, but I also like "Feel The Need", "Someday Love", and honestly the whole thing is good. Sorry to see this is currently out of print, and no other news from Dave. If you find it, grab it.

Different clothes, same attitude.......2003-12-28

As a Soul Asylum diehard, the 1st listen to this album was some kind of a shock, since the 2 extracts "Faces and Names" and "Never Recover" don't show Dave Pirner's "new sound". RnB Songs like "364" or "Feel The Need" have NOTHING in common with the band, be it Say What You Will or Grave Dancers Union era. But after 2-3 listenings you see the same attitude, same honesty, same talent as every Soul Asylum release. Pirner is now skillful enough to cross genres and still "lookin' good". And, after all this is another Dave Pirner album, the new influences don't make him sound like Blues Brothers!

New Orleans do him good...........2003-01-22

It is more than obvious Mr. Pirner has spent time walking the streets of New Orleans. His heartbroken, sometimes off-key voice is at the front like never before. If Soul Asylum is your band, this CD will fit in well with your collection. Nice solo debut from a man who knows to nod and wink at his surroundings. Nice jazz and soul takes throughout this offering. Well thought out lyrics. The cream has risen to the top.

Pirner Shows Another Side.......2002-08-15

Die-hard fans of Soul Asylum may find this solo disc from frontman Dave Pirner a little tough to digest, at least at first. With the exception of the title track very few of the 11 tracks on "Face and Names" would fit on a Soul Asylum record. Anyone expecting the fury of "Somebody To Shove" or even the acoustic touches of "Runaway Train" will have to keep looking. Instead, Pirner and friends create a soulful, cleanly produced set of tracks that, for the most part, work very well. What makes it special is that, while Pirner has changed the sonic nature of his work, his insighful, personal lyrics remain. When he sings that he will "Never Recover", you believe him. Highlights include "Someday Love", "Teach Me To Breath", and "Start Treating People Right". Last but not least there is the title track which, honestly, is among the best songs I've heard this year. Similar to Soul Asylum's "String Of Pearls", the song "Faces and Names" is about as close to perfect as you can imagine and worth the price of the disc in and of itself. I still long for new Soul Asylum music but, if Pirner chooses to do stuff like this in their off-time or even for the rest of his career, I'll be the first in line to check it out.

Seattle-based smartypants rock group the Long Winters leap into a less indie-rock void on this excellent EP. Imagine a swarthier and keyboard-driven Death Cab, or a less mournful Eels wrapped up in Mellotron goodness. While some fans might still bemoan the lack of funnyman Sean Nelson's presence in the band, Laura Veirs' producer Tucker Martine helps Roderick achieve a new greatness. As Rodericks's charming and idiosyncratic voice becomes ever more central to the Long Winters' music, so do his lyrics. They're a beguiling combination of post-collegiate songster poetry ("Crave translates into slave, no one can harness the rain"), post-Pavement slacker nonsequitur ("The weight of this hairstyle's making me lazy") and post-marijuana sci-fi treatment ("I won't eat a machine / But what if it asks me? / What if it says my name?") the first time i heard the long winters was sitting in the passenger seat of my friend jim's car staring out the window along the king's county highway going back to downtown seattle. it was one of the most beautiful days i had ever seen. the sky was that perfect shade of pastel blue, quiet simple changes of white clouds played hide and go seek beneath the sun while pacific northwest emerald green trees and soft glimmers of faceless shadows in reflections of rear view mirrors followed. we were smiling, listening to KEXP loud and as always, the music just kept on making the moments even better. following the sounds of radiohead, modest mouse, eels... the long winters came on with the track give me a moment. everything quietly stopped movie-like with simple connections to the way sounds repeated motion. the music kept falling in line right in time synchronizing itself to every single little detail as if it were tracing the city skyline.

the long winters bring to mind simple beautiful bittersweet memories to the feeling of seasons changing, the way old notebooks read full of fragile poetry, soft acoustic guitars create comfort sounds and those times when you cant help but feel anything except the colorful patterns repeating in yr mind taking over. sometimes its too much and sometimes it just makes sense.

Just a blissful EP.......2006-01-14

This EP shows a bit of the soft side of our friends the Long Winters as glimpsed in tracks like "It'll Be a Breeze" or "The Sound of Coming Down" from their previous release. The EP is just simply beautiful with a bit of a bittersweet sound that is a hard find in rock music today. A sign of amazing things to come, surely.

Great bridge to the next LP.......2005-10-17

Ultimatum is EXACTLY what I look for in an EP... little wing-stretching. The EP is more of a step down an emotionally haunting road than the group's two previous LPs. Less rocktastic jangly songs... more sucker-punches to the heart (in a good way).

The four original tunes were fabulous, and once again showed John Roderick's mastery of lyrics. If I was half as good with words as Mr. Roderick, this review would be MUCH better.

The two solo tracks were a great add at the end. Fans of Bride and Bridle will be thrilled with this version.

Definitely a good pickup for anyone who loves good, thoughtful and fulfilling music. This should also help the fans awaiting the next LP get their fix.

keep me holding on. .......2005-10-17

This EP makes me want to live in a place where seasons change and where every girl I've ever loved remembers me with the same kind of smiling sadness. Maybe it's the vintage keyboards or that 70s-ish singer-songwriter vibe that sort of encapsulates that feeling of nostalgia. Maybe it's the songs themselves.

There's a quality of sonic virus (the earworms, catchy, catchy earworms) about them -- enough so that you have plenty of time with the songs running through your head to puzzle out the lyrics (once you realize who the Commander is in "The Commander Thinks Aloud," I can guarantee you'll have to sit very quietly for a moment or two to collect yourself.

I did. And I want to do it again.

Um, yeah, it's an EP, so complaining about "Ultimatum" 's length is akin to whining that a novella is too short.

That said, the four studio tracks are haunting and spectral. If this version of "The Commander Thinks Aloud" doesn't break your heart wide open, you're already lying in a cold pine box.

The two live cuts showcase John Roderick's powerful voice and deft musicianship and will hook veteran Long Winters fans and newbies alike.

The best modern rock band you may have not heard.......2004-04-12

This album really grew on me after 2 or 3 listens. "Down" starts of this great album with an acoustic guitar and impressive vocal stylings before the bass, drums, and guitars kick in; this opening moment is an accurate indication of the powerfully expansive musical abilities Moke possess. Moke keeps their crunchy modern rock songs interesting by changing from softer slow to mid tempo stuff to a faster and edgier style with in the same song. Moke's lead singer, John Hogg, has a great voice and delivery (his vocal style/delivery is very similar to Chris Cornell's style (I do emphasize *style* here and not *sound*)). Although this issue from Moke is less meloncholy and a bit more uptempo than Chris Cornell's "Euphoria Morning" both albums display the same impressive range of eclectic musical stylings, making them better with each listen. Hogg's voice really is the strongest part of this young British band. Hogg has a graceful sounding voice (which can beautifully hold the higher falsetto notes) which works well with the carefully plucked guitars and minimal, yet well-timed, drums and bass work. Furthermore, Hogg possesses an authentic ability to sing energetically and rock out on songs such as "Down" and "Wheel In Motion." These guys are really talented. I would recommend getting both of Moke's albums (this one first though). My favorite tracks on this album are: Mislaid the Key, My Desire, Down, Wheel In Motion, and Sleepyhead. I would recommend this lesser-known band to any fan of good music, and definitley to anyone who likes Counting Crows or Chris Cornell's solo album. Enjoy!

i like moke. i saw them @ the park opposite my house of all places!! they were brilliant, and i've never really recovered from being blown away by their huge sound... that night i spent the entire evening on the internet trying to find out about them - because all the other bands playing there were unsigned, i thought they were.. but they were huge, and i didn't realise! anyway - they're great. album rules

Talented.......2000-07-14

These guys prove on this album that they have talent, but can they back it up. They seem kind of confused. I am not sure if they know where they want to go with their music. I thought I would like the variety on the album, but I am not too sure. My favorite song on this album is Mislaid the Key because I love the mix between the blues and the hip hop. It is definately worth a listen, check them out.

I consider my taste in music to be pretty good. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Temple of the Dog are among my favorite bands. So, you can trust me when I say that this album is one of the best albums that I've heard this year. Besides Sevendust's "Home" and Creed's "Human Clay", this is the best rock that I've heard in a long while. It would be a huge mistake to pass up this album. BUY IT YO!

I saw Moke open for the Black Crowes and was totally blown away. When they opened up their set with the first track from the album, "Down," I knew that these guys could rock. I bought the album that night and it seems that they have been a well kept secret ever since. Blazing guitars, strong bass lines, rocking beats, and roaring vocals. What more could you want!

I bought this on a whim from a used cd/record store, with only the caption "weird, melodic, electro-pop; commercial jingles for the clinically insane."
Those were the best $6 I've ever spent. The cd has addicting beats and bizarre lyrics. What an amazing upbeat cd! I would say it is like the Postal Service on methamphetamines. From children to hipsters, this cd will be appreciated.

almost perfect except for..............2003-12-31

This album is wonderful. The only exception in my book is the 'hidden' track, which is made for kids not the people enjoying this album. A few of the instrumentals can get tedious but are enjoyable in a way.
The rest of the tracks are strange, different little nuggets. '1983' is my fave but every song following it falls under the realm of instant happiness. 'Best Friend' should have been picked up by VW for a Beetle commercial. These songs are feel-good, sunny morning toe tappers that can make just about everyone walk away feeling just a little more bouyant. This is one album I can truly say I am glad I bought.

This is one of the coolest albums I've heard in years. I can't wait for their next release! The music is original from start to finish. Lots of different syles are explored. A great debut effort. After listening to so many albums where every song sounds the same this is REALLY a breath of fresh air. I love the use of extensive use synthesizers with acoustic and electric instruments. The band really explores many different sounds. The lyrics are mostly quirky and fun but they all have substance underneath. The mixes and multi-layered textures and wide variety of vocals used are really neat. I love this album! Finally something different and good.

I think the coolest and most bizarre song I own out of the 5300 songs...I have is Electric Pocket Radio. One Millionth customer is just a cool as hell song layered and built up perfectly. BEEP BEEP Love is unavoidably addictive, and everything in between just rocks. Get this album, you couldn't possibly regret it.

If you're looking for some awesome songs that are unlike anything you've ever heard before, look no further. This is an awesome album all around, but the song Fuzzy has got to be the best Incredible Moses Leroy has ever done. I first heard it on a TV ad for the italian motorscooter Vespa. It's so adorable!
