About the Artist
Earlimarts Treble & Tremble is a reaction to someone leaving the room without saying a word. Its a lush, haunting affair informed by loss, but with a determined effort to let go and move on, tying clean knots from a tangle of loose ends. With numerous references to telephones, reports, conversation and music itself, Treble and Tremble is about communication and how we fail to communicate. Yet, amid the white noise, the record is also a celebration of the moments we break through.
Treble & Tremble is filled with the warm, breathy vocals and expansive arrangements that earned the bands 2003 releases The Avenues E.P. and Everyone Down Here critical praise from journalists and peers alike. Crafted by piano-driven melodies, layered in a patchwork of guitars and strings, the finished tracks are the accomplished efforts of Espinozas expanding production expertise. The records greatest moments come in repeated listens, when the peppered distortion and crackling noise lifts to reveal striking parts inescapably missed.
Earlimarts progression from an X- and Pixies-inspired experimental punk band to their current sound is the result of experience and process. Espinoza, raised in Fresno, CA near the tiny Central Valley town that inspired the bands name, along with Los Angeles native and original member Ariana Murray (bass, keys), grew out of their influences and defined their own signature by years of touring and self-recording.
A one-sided conversation spoken in futility and giving up to hope, the album's first track, "Hold On Slow Down," keys punctuate swirling synths and crackling static until it falls away and re-emerges as the intrepid crescendo that opens "First Instant Last Report." "The Hidden Track" is the perfect Earlimart staple, a classic pop song that begins with layered acoustic guitar and warm vocals eventually building into an overture of keys and cellos and crashing cymbals.
Treble & Tremble was produced and recorded by Espinoza and Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy) at the bands Ship studio, home to a collective of like-minded artists nestled in the foothills of Eagle Rock, CA. The Ship studio has also earned a reputation outside of its usual crew, hosting sessions by the Folk Implosion, the Breeders and Elliott Smith. Along with performances by Murray, contributions to the record came from Earlimart drummer David Latter, Scott McPherson (Elliott Smith) and Brian Thornell (Pine Marten).
Treble and Trembles soul is its second half. Theres a vintage Seventies riff that punctuates the quiet regret in witnessing the destruction of "Broke the Furniture," followed by the thunderous guitar-driven catharsis and unsettling mechanized vocals on "Unintentional Tape Manipulations." That storm yields to the beautifully fragile "Heaven Adores You," easily the most heartbreaking song the band has written to date. The suite "Tell the Truth Parts 1 & 2" is at times Lennon-esque: stark, spare and inquisitive with its bleeding heart stitched to a sleeve, a song that asks a few last, lingering questions and teeters close to resignation. Espinoza sings, "I know Im out of reach/And all the songs are out of key," and returns, if only to remind himself, "Well I guess you just dont know/You dont know shit about me."
Unwavering and accepting, Espinoza closes Treble and Tremble on "Its Okay to Think About Ending," easing in with a simple piano and vocal melody before unfolding into something understated yet gorgeous, its orchestral instrumentation delicate and offering the albums most poignant simple request: "Take care of your heart."

Customer Reviews:
Beware - this is NOT the right version!.......2007-07-07
This is a fantastic CD and all, but as of July '07, what they're shipping is not the "10 Years After" (Dix Ans Apres) version, which includes a bonus disc and has all 33 pieces listed on this page. I got a single 16-song disc, the same one I bought 3 or 4 years ago. Buyer beware.
Disc one is great....disc two doesn't exist...beware.......2007-07-05
I have the original 16-track version of this recording and couldn't agree more with the glowing comments left by others. However, this listing is somewhat misleading as the reviews mention that it is a newer release with a bonus disc containing 17 extra tracks. Since other reviews and the Alia Vox website itself mention that such a thing exists, I went ahead and ordered it, only to receive the same single disc version I already had. Amazon tells me the double one isn't available, so beware.
It's still great music though.
Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-06-11
I was introduced to this utterly, utterly gorgeous soundtrack via a "friend of a friend", to whom I am eternally grateful. I listened to this on cassette tape too many times to count. The music is hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric, dark and moody, tragic and deep. This is music from the Baroque period but nothing like Bach, or Purcell, or Handel.
Vive Savall and M. Sainte Colombe .......2006-04-27
I saw the film and was enthralled by the portrayals of Sainte Colombe and Marin Marais. (Depardu was superb as always.) Some reviewers thought the film dull or tedious. I suppose in today's film culture where there is so much action without much substance there are those who would concur. I thought is was an excellent study of the characters and the music, which is rarity even in films about musicians.
French Baroque Performed by The Absolute Master of the Viola Da Gamba.......2005-10-09
In addition to French Baroque being generally and wrongly relegated to secondary status compared to Italian or German Baroque, there are probably less than 200 professional players who specialize in the viola da gamba as an instrument which was used mostly by French Baroque composers. Out of those few 200 performers, Jordi Savall is the undisputed master of his craft not only in performing French Baroque but really any Baroque piece for the viola da gamba. This soundtrack is a fine example on the diversity and depth of not only the viola's range but on works of various composers during the French Baroque period: especially the works of Marais and Sainte-Colombe. This album is also a great sample of the simply exemplary talent of Jordi Savall as a violist.
The double album primarily contains solos or duets for viola da gamba by Marais and Sainte-Colombe but has pieces by other contemporaries such as Lully. This album is a great sample of the variety of works and composers of the unique French Baroque tradition that continued to use the viola while other musical styles in Europe had virtually abandoned it for the cello. The viola da gamba has a lot more range, depth, and resonance than the cello and so the music is moodier and more contemplative than cello works such as Bach's magnificent cello suites. Solo music for viola from the French Baroque also allows freer interpretation than conventional compositions for orchestra or other chamber pieces. The jewel in this album is Marais' haunting but divine Sonnerie de Ste-Genevieve in which the dynamics of the violas and violins are truly a spiritual voyage into one's soul; at points serenely docile to demonically ferocious as if phantasms both luring and forbidding the listener to follow. The intricate complexity and resonance of this exquisite piece makes it one of the most spiritually moving Baroque sonet variations I have ever heard and it's one of my personal favorites. Both Marais and Sainte-Colombe were probably the pinnacle of achievement in terms of expressive techniques for the viola da gamba during the French Baroque period while later contemporaries such as Forqueray and Couperin became more formulaic although no less accomplished.
Jordi Savall has many priceless performances apart from this soundtrack and he is really the only competent artist for both viola da gamba specifically and primarily all French Baroque interpretations. There are no other viola players who can even compare to Savall as they really sound as little else than amateurs in comparison to his applied skills and passion of playing. I strongly recommend for anyone looking for music for viola da gamba or really any French Baroque to buy Savall/Le Concert Des Nations' performances exclusively as there's simply nothing else to look for or find that's in his caliber. Apart from a few other performnances by groups such as Les Arts Florissants, I guarantee you that the performances of all others in this style will rise to no further than being mediocre at best such as Harncourt or even Koopman who often plays with Savall. Most other viola performers quickly descend to atrocious standards in comparison to those of Savall. Even though Savall's recordings tend to be on the more expensive side, he's worth every penny take my word for it: you won't regret it! What you will regret is having bought a mediocre viola peformance after you hear Savall's as the differences will be very significant.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Customer Reviews:
Smiling through the tears..........2005-09-05
The first time I heard this cd, I was minding my own business at a bookstore in Houston. I was suddenly hit with 'Hold On Slow Down' which generated an intense sadness as I too had just lost a very good friend to drugs. I was trying to sip hot coffee as well but you tend to shake a little when the tears are swelling up in your eyes. Ouch! Burned hands. 'First Instant Last Report' is my favorite though because it IS the smile shinning through those crocodile tears. I recommend it! (Not crying and burning your hands but buying this cd.)
Not a Clone, Despite Popular Opinion.......2005-03-22
Forget what you've heard about Earlimart's "Treble & Tremble" being a rip-off of Elliott Smith and forget the Pixie past. Earlimart has something better than that for you in "Treble & Tremble"
T&T is certainly in the same vein as Elliott's soulfull, heartwrenching, lyrical piano and acoustic driven songwriting. But it is no clone. Earlimart instead works within the genre Smith pioneered to produce something familiar, yet still original. Songs such as "All They Ever Do Is Talk" and "Heaven Adores You" are the most remeniscent of Smith's style on the album, yet they are good in their own right: not as immitation but homage.
Though Aaron Espinoza is certainly lyrically talented, he can of course in no way replace or compare with Elliott's significance and style. But he is willing to bring an experimental element listeners should find to be significant in the development of a unique style for the band. Particularly fascinating to me are two songs: "Sounds" which is a great rock-out piece echoing a bit of Pedro the Lion. But most intriguing is "Unintentional Tape Manipulations," a crazed mix of distortion, noise, acoustic guitar, and haunting vocal filtering that makes for something truly original and fascinating to listen to.
Amazing Follow Up.......2005-01-26
I enjoyed Everyone Down Here so much and felt it was a very worthy debut for this band. They took some leaps and bounds to create this beautiful record.
It aches my stomach with how great "The Hidden Track" is, complete bliss and sets you up for a good feeling on the rest of the album. Where as the rest of the album clicks and misses upon first listening. But I find the best stuff is when you hear it a couple of times, usually when a great album sinks in it gets flooded.
No matter how many times I hear "The Hidden Track" I just go to pieces. This is quite the masterful follow up if you ask me.
First for me from Earlimart.......2005-01-12
First off, I know nothing about this band or the guy who died who has been mentioned in other reviews, so I can't compare this cd to their past works. This cd was being played in my local Barnes & Noble one day and piqued my interest so much I decided to buy it.
I am a collector of 80's cd's of tecno/goth/new wave etc... and this cd had alot of that sound. Musically it has the sound of Love & Rockets. The vocals sound alot like The Jesus & Mary Chain. I am always looking for new stuff with an 80's sound to it and this cd didn't disappoint me in that aspect.
The major problem that I have had with it was that many of the songs sound the same. Out of the first 5 or so tracks I have a hard time telling one from the next. Maybe that is just a matter of giving this cd more plays.
If you enjoy haunting vocals with a distortion sound of quitars you may want to check out this cd from Earlimart.
Beautiful, truly makes me tremble.......2004-12-06
This album is magnificent. Earlimart has gone from college echoe rock to beautiful piano enriched indie space rock. I can see the Grandaddy influences from the producer, adn Elliot Smith's influences also.
I am a fan of Smith's and was actually at the last live performance he ever gave before he died at the University of Utah Redfest last year. This album truly makes me weep. Anybody who has lost somebody will be tocuhed by this music. It is not overly depressing either, in fact it is kind of hopeful and positive. Even the Tape Manipulations song isn't as bad as many have said. It helps add dimension to this album.
Overall this is a very well thought out and executed album that resonates with agony, beauty, and hope.

King's College Classic.......2004-10-11
Way back in the dark ages, before CDs roamed the earth, I purchased the LP of this recording. It remains my favorite performance of Britten's work. The voices of the choir, accompanied by one harp, weave an achingly beautiful tapestry of sound. It is a wonderful way to introduce children and friends to the English choral tradition of sacred music.
Britten Brilliance.......2004-09-28
Captivating from start to finish: EMI has programmed & remastered this bounty of Britten choral work superbly. The Choir of King's College, Cambridge performs with stunning sensitivity, ethereal, heartbreaking & transcendent. A just classic disc

In this beautifully chosen program of mostly a cappella arrangements, Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers deliver the Christmas story in tones of gentle and moving splendor. The carols and sacred settings recorded here are all of an intimate sort, and the rapturous, gently expressive realizations Shaw and his singers give them prove unfailingly appealing. Particularly moving is the newest work on the disc, a setting of "O magnum mysterium" by the American composer Morten Lauridsen. Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" is another gem, as is the arrangement by Healy Willan of the French carol "What Is This Lovely Fragrance?" The offering includes a pair of chorales from Bach's Christmas Oratorio and two wonderful Christmas works by Benjamin Britten: "A Hymn to the Virgin" and A Ceremony of Carols, both well done, even if the sound of sopranos and altos (rather than boy trebles) in the latter takes some getting used to. --Ted Libbey

Beautiful.......2007-02-16
The music is beautiful of course. The Robert Shaw Chorale is a high quality group of singers, and the arrangements they sing are really nice. Because of the age of the recording today's standards of equpment and tonal quality simply weren't available but the upgrade from analog vinyl was well-done. I shall look for more of these.
Robert Shaw Chorale.......2007-01-10
This is an excellent ablum. The music is lovely and quite varied. While there are many of the familiar favorites, there are also many new and different songs and the whole CD is a delight to listen to.
a perfect Ceremony of Carols!.......2005-12-22
This is the finest recording of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols I've ever come across, and there are plenty of versions to choose from. The King's College Choir rendition suffers from overstuffed acoustics, a constant with that choir, and their recording of Ceremony of Carols falls short in the requisite rhythmic clarity and intensity. The Christ Church, Oxford version is plodding, and lacks sparkle. Harry Christopher's The Sixteen come close, with marvelous sonics and ecstatic diction, but fall apart in the exacting 'This Little Babe' round with uneven cohesion, and strange stressed notes that ruin the waterfall effect so felicitously construed by Britten. I've not heard Britten's own conducted version, but he scrupulously insisted on boy trebles, and it's difficult if not impossible to conjure a more perfect rendering than the one given here by Shaw and his Chamber Singers. 'This Little Babe' is incomparable in each and all of its rapid fire contours, which is no mean feat. Mezzo-soprano Nanette Soles deserves special mention for incandescent singing on 'That Younge Child". The luminous pacing of 'There is no rose of such virtue' is notable, and to his credit Shaw employs the ecclesiastical pronunciation of the various Latin passages, unlike The Sixteen (and most other English choir recordings of this piece) who insist on an idiomatic British pronunciation of Latin, which offers nothing but distraction. Some will prefer boy treble singers, an attractive option, but for high musical values and the art they inevitably enshrine, it's impossible to be disappointed with this profoundly wrought version of Ceremony of Carols. Bach's 'Break Forth, O beauteous heavenly light' is just right, and I'd not heard 'Heavenly Light' by Aleksandr Kopylov; both are favorable additions to an excellent recording. Recommended.
Brilliant compilation.......2005-03-16
This is an absolutely outstanding collection of carols - some of them well-known, some of them obscure. As a choral singer, I've had the pleasure of singing many of these pieces, and I was delighted when I found them all in one place, and done by an ensemble so accomplished as the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers! It just isn't Christmas for me without this recording.
Didn't care for it that much.......2004-12-27
I prefer to hear the voices and the words of the carols, and this one has too much other sound (maybe even the use of massed voices); I have a hard time hearing what they are singing.

A Beautiful Muiscal Rendition of the Psalms.......2004-04-19
To some extent, the title of this collection PSALMS FOR THE SOUL is a bit oxymoronic. The psalms that are set to music in this collection are from the Bible, and therefore all psalms from scripture would be psalms for the soul, so to speak. I would imagine that the person who came up with the title was trying to market the recording to a broader public than just those who would purchase a religious CD and thought it would be catchy. But I digress and should not poke fun of the people of Naxos who do a tremendous service to classical music lovers by providing a wide variety of music at affordable prices.
This collection contains musical settings of the psalms. Some of the settings are anthems from the Anglican tradition. Other settings are more liturgical stemming from the Benedictine monastic tradition. Some of the settings are contemporary, others traditional. The Choir of St. John's under the direction of Noel Edison and organist Michael Bloss, performs the pieces with both beauty and reverence.
This collection is relaxing. It makes wonderful background music while concentrating and could also be used as in prayerful reflective settings as well.

This recording of James MacMillan's Mass is an intense, emotionally charged 70 minutes reflecting the composer's deeply held religious beliefs. These are beliefs that, as he has said in commenting on the mood of his Mass, are not immune to doubts and fears and an awareness of the "tragedies and uncertainties of our age." So don't expect an easy listen. The music featured on this album unfolds slowly, patiently, seeming to exist outside time, and yet is colored by extremes of pitch and dynamic requiring great virtuosity and control. The Mass, which is written in Latin and incorporates priest and congregation in liturgical use, could have been written for the singers of the Westminster Cathedral Choir featured here, who know its contours intimately. The traditional hard-edged sound of the Westminster Cathedral trebles cut through the vast acoustic like a knife, right up until the wonderfully imaginative hold-your-breath ending of the "Agnus Dei." A range of other British cathedrals and churches that boast connections with MacMillan's works are included, among them St. Paul's Cathedral and King's College Chapel, Cambridge. The Scottish accents of "A New Song" beguile and bewitch, while the moving "A Child's Prayer" commemorates the 1996 Dunblane tragedy. Among the soloists, treble David de Winter provides some breathtaking moments in "Christus Vincit." --Andrew Green
Customer Reviews:
stunning masterpieces of faith.......2002-07-08
This is liturgical and religious music at its best. Macmillan is grounded in modern atonal music and in the long tradition of music in the church - plainsong, antiphonal singing, up to and including the great performance masses. This grounding in the music of the Church is in the context of faith not musical history. The result is music for the great cathedrals - music that soars to the heights, that is not muddled by the stone acoustics.
The cd contains a Wallace Stevens poem set for choir "Changed"; that Macmillan recognizes this poem as essentially religious attests to the depth of his faith. The Seinte Mari moder milde which was commissioned for a Lessons and Carols service should become standard Advent/Christmas repetoire.
Great music; great performance ... what more can one ask?
Beautiful, Fantastic!.......2002-03-25
This is some of the most beautiful vocal music I have ever heard (and I have heard a lot!). Actually, I should remove the qualifiier: this is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. I was surprised by this CD as I had only previously been aware of MacMillan as the composer of some thorny, albeit interesting, instrumental works. There remains some evidence of his more challenging modernistic aspect especially in some of the organ parts but this music is ageless/timeless in its spirit and character. MacMillan manages to use familiar elements: plainsong, common chords and grounded tonality to achieve wonderfully fresh effects and textures-no easy feat in this day and age when this approach has been "picked over" by many lesser composers. No less an achievment is MacMillan's ability to use very modern quasi-atonal elements and blend them convincingly with "older", more familiar musical elements. In short, this is a stunning triumph of vision and imagination and a wonderful fusion of ancient and modern.
The religious underpinnings of these pieces should not dissuade you from buying and enjoying this CD. The music certainly has a very strong and sincere spiritual quality but one can enjoy this music on its purely musical terms: imagination, craft, beauty of sound, inspiration and ability to connect emotionally with the listener.
Kudos are also in order for the performers. The Westminster Choir sounds absolutely wonderful as does the organist. Hats off to their director for pulling this challenging music (from a performance standpoint) in a seemingly effortless manner. The recording also gets high marks as does absolutely everything about this CD.
Music of the highest order-my highest recommendation!
Utterly recommended.......2001-12-18
James MacMillan has become acknowledged as one of the powerful voices amongst composers of today. His music combines a strong sense of spirituality with genuine earthly passions, and feels true to its time whilst being accessible. This disc brings together some of MacMillan's finest sacred music, by which he is most favourably represented.
Since the departure of James O'Donnell in January 2000, Westminster Cathedral Choir have been under the direction of Martin Baker, formerly Sub-Organist of Westminster Abbey. He is clearly every bit as capable as O'Donnell in bringing out the best from his forces: from the first to the last, the singing of the boys is enchanting and that of the men is very robust indeed!
The centrepiece of the programme is of course MacMillan's "Mass," a setting of the modern vernacular text commissioned by Westminster Cathedral. The liner notes describe it as "extraordinarily complete" - it is indeed difficult to think of any composer who has gone as far as to provide music for the Gospel Acclamation and Eucharistic Prayers in addition to the usual sections of the Ordinary. In this work, MacMillan demonstrates beyond any doubt his vision of God: seething with power over our world, yet adorable and approachable by us. Certain moments are extremely gritty, especially the "Sanctus" which conveys this image more strongly than any other section. The work also owes something to the inspiration of Westminster Cathedral itself; one can almost see the edifice against the ever-bristling background of London in the dark and subtle musical colours of the "Agnus Dei." MacMillan also acknowledges the archaic splendours of plainchant, particularly in his settings of the tropes accompanying the familiar "Kyrie" text and in the Eucharistic Prayer. This is a Mass like no other - deeply felt and gripping, a challenge for any good choir (with some virtuosic organ writing to boot!) that is astonishingly well-met by the Westminster Choir.
The disc opens with the spell-binding anthem "A New Song," with a hauntingly memorable Gaelic-flavoured tune, ethereal drones from the basses and the organ, and some powerful moments involving everyone in a fugue-like outburst that is at once joyful and wistful. The coda for organ is very exciting. Other works in the programme have similarly been adopted as anthems in the repertoires of the 'elite' church and cathedral choirs around the world: "Christus vincit," with its breathtaking and demanding treble solo; "A Child's Prayer," a stark and moving piece written in memory of those who were killed at Dunblane Primary School in 1996; the wonderful carol "Sainte Mari, Moder Milde," commissioned for the 1995 Nine Lessons and Carols Service at King's College Cambridge and giving everyone in the choir (and, again, the organist) something to sink their teeth into. The programme is capped by two works that fall outside of the regular repertoire: "Changed," a setting of secular text with sacred overtones that presents some astonishing choral sonorities, and "Gaudeamus in loci pace," MacMillan's first major solo organ work which is essentially a plainchant antiphon harmonised in slowly unfolding chords and embellished with Messiaen-like bird motifs.
Everything about this disc is utterly commendable: the artwork, the performance, the sound quality, and by all means the music. An incomparably stunning experience!
The Next Face of Church Music.......2001-12-04
James MacMillan is without a doubt the most profound composer of church music writing today. His music is deeply joyous, but without shouting at you. There is tenderness, pathos and in the Mass, an almost otherwordly sense of the Eucharist. Imagine a mixture of Herbert Howells, Messiaen, and Scottish Music and you may get an idea of the effect of this profoundly beautiful music. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in the revival of modern liturgical music, and anyone interested in recovering the sense of mystery in worship.
Wonderful 21st Century setting of the Mass.......2001-10-19
James MacMillan has done a great thing in composing this Mass for Westminster Cathedral. Since the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, Roman Catholic church music has suffered greatly. Much of post-Vatican II sacred music is trite and banal. Thankfully, the choir of Westminster Cathedral has shown us that this need not be so.
They have commissioned 20th (and now 21st century) works for use in the liturgy. James MacMillan's setting of the Mass is marvelous and example of what Roman Catholic church music could be. The setting is in English. Most Roman Catholics are far more likely to encounter the English Mass rather than the Latin. The music is faithful to the texts and enunciates them well.

Splendid Saint-Saens.......2006-05-17
I don't usually disagree with prior reviews but here I have to. I have owned this CD for at least 8 years, maybe longer. And I love it. The Saint-Saens is a very special piece of music and I am totally dumbfounded why nobody ever plays it. It does not sound difficult, so a church chior and orchestra could easily take a stab at it. Instead, we get one Handel Messiah after another at Christmas. And this performance sounds just perfect to me. True, there are no texts but remember, this a super budget CD and your are lucky to get performer's names sometimes. As for the Britten, it is a piece I have little love for. And so I will not comment on the performance.
The real gem here is the Oratorio.......2005-12-30
I think this album is worth buying for the Oratorio alone. Saint-Saens' Oratorio is way too underrated and underperformed, and I hadn't heard of it myself until my fine arts program put on a production of it this semester. It's a small scale work written only for strings, harp and organ (and chorus and soloists of course), nevertheless it is absolutely gorgeous. Even the recitative is beautiful! My personal fav's are the Soprano and Baritone duet (in which the soprano hits a high C without shattering the windows), the Tenor, Soprano and Baritone Trio which in itself is one of the most beautiful and haunting pieces of music that I've heard, and the Quartet for Alto, Soprano, Mezzo, and Bass. I don't know anything about Britten's ceremony of carols, but I would still buy this album even if it were solely for the Oratorio. And regardless of what others have said, I think this particular recording of it is marvellous.
beautiful recording!.......2005-03-02
I don't find anything wrong on these recording. Both the Christmas Oratory and Britten's carols are beautifully performed. It is of special interest Saint-Saens Christmas Oratory since personally, I had never heard it before, but after listening to it I can fully recomend it.
Worth Adding to Your Christmas Collection.......2003-12-06
Having had no previous experience of either piece of music, I'd say this recording is well worth its low price. Sound quality is very high for a budget recording. If this is still the only recording of the St. Saens oratorio, I'd say don't think twice - just grab it, before it goes out of circulation.
I can see how it might come across as uninspired, as the previous reviewers mentioned, but I think the gentle approach suits the music well in most spots.
Budget recording - not very good, but the only one available.......2002-12-04
This bargain-basement recording has more than its share of shortcomings. A competent but uninspired performance of the Saint-Saens is by far the highlight. But Britten's _Ceremony of Carols_ is sung in German instead of the original Middle English, and it comes off as something of a fiasco.
The absence of liner notes means that you won't know what the choir or soloist is singing at any given time, so much of the subtle word-painting will be lost on most listeners. All vocal soloists are unidentified.
I've recommended this recording only because it is at present the only one of the Saint-Saens available. But it's high time for something better. Naxos, are you listening?

Timeless - Still incredible 12 years later.......2005-04-08
I too received this fantastic CD as a Word Perfect 6.0 Demo back in 1993. It always frustrated me that my home CD player wouldn't recognize the CD since the 1st track was actually a data track. I did a search on Amazon to see if there was another release, after several unsucessful attempts to load the demo version into my iPod. Not only did I find this CD with two additional tracks but also discovered a DVD of a live performance of Innovators. Viewing this concert is also an incredible experience. Read the liner notes for each song and it will bring great meaning to the songs and to the whole CD. What an incredible listening experience even today, 12 years later.
A brilliant audio equiment test CD.......2004-04-14
I am a as much of a hi fi equipment enthusiast as my finances will allow me. Besides the music on this CD being something very very special, probably my favourite, its diversity in sound is a great test for Hi Fi equipment. It runs from high trebles to deep bass beats, clean vocals, subtle sounds to driving rythms and complex audio mixes.
Try with PMC OB1 speakers Bryston amps 14's (must be biamped) Naim CDX2 CD Player with separate XPS2 power supply and Naim NAC 282 preamp. Cable to taste and you will be blown away.
I'm Speechless.......2003-12-16
I too got this CD as a Word Perfect promo thing back in 1993. I don't even recall trying the software, and found the music tracks "odd". I was but 21 then, and music - to me - had words and regular, rhythmic drum beats - this wasn't music! Two years ago, after being thru a lot of turmoil from '94 to '01, I stumble on this CD - I still had it after all those years. Now I keep it in the truck and in the carousel at home and nothing compares to turning this up loud enough to drown everything else out. And it saves the expense at the therapists office :) Not only did it provide me with a new understanding of music, it helps me live a much more relaxed life.
Powerful listening and reading.......2003-04-02
The music and the insert could each stand on their own as powerfully moving pieces. Together they open the heart and mind to new understandings. At once transcendental and grounding, Innovators can be merely a lovely musical encounter or a growth experience. Either way, you'll want to listen again and again.
One of my favorite CDs of all times.......2003-03-05
This music is emotional and deep. I can't say enough about this CD and have listened to it about thousands of times. My favorite track is Sage of Lamberene, dedicated to Albert Schweitzer. It moves me to tears.

Just get a CD like this one to get a broad brush review of the popular hits of the late 1500s. While I would have liked a few more recorder pieces, almost every cut was interesting in its own way. If you want just one early music CD with English songs, this is probably the one to get.
A Very Good Compilation of Elizabethan Music.......2001-09-27
"Elizabeth's Music" is a great cd to listen to if you are an enthusiast of ballads, the lute or old fashioned jigs. This cd really puts you in the alehouses, courts and courtyards of the Elizebethan age. The music is preformed well and the voices are very authentic and beautiful. The CD loses one star because most of the songs are on other Dorian-released CDs! I got the cd and found out most of the songs were the exact same ones on my "Shakespeare's Music" CD and other Dorian CDs. Ah well. All Elizabethan enthusiasts will enjoy this eclectic collection.
Light classics with historical charm.......2000-01-07
Really enjoyed this CD. Light and pleasant, without being too pretentious. Great background music for home or office.
