The old adage that says you can't go home again rings especially true for artists and musicians attempting to return to their artistic roots. Ironically, it's also what makes the Bee Gees' journey back to their '60s sensibilities feel like a gratifying, if unassuming, triumph. Indeed, while the songs here are possessed of the innate soulfulness and melodic flair familiar from their youth, they've wisely allowed disparate musical elements from their dizzying three-decade-plus career to season this collection, giving it a satisfying pan-generational sense that's as rewarding as it is rare. The title track sets the tone, with the brothers trading verses against a spare acoustic guitar and drum-kit backdrop. It's a bracing reminder that the Gibb brothers' locked-in harmony remains one of pop's enduring sonic archetypes. While they've never completely shaken the cultural stereotyping of their late '70s megaplatinum doses of disco fever, there are few remnants of it here, save for the insistent drum loop. Given their longevity and pervasive insider influence, it's sometimes a historical riddle to figure out who's influencing whom, from the distinct ELO-isms of Robin's "She Keeps on Coming" and Maurice's "Man in the Middle" to Barry's singular balladry on "Loose Talk Costs Lives." And lest anyone think it's strictly a '60s-'70s love fest, the Gibbs toss in a good-natured nod to Tin-Pan Alley ("Technicolor Dreams") and even a spirited, if somewhat ham-handed, post-modern romp ("Voice in the Wilderness"). More than anything, it's a record that argues that home is but a state of mind, and that the Bee Gees have learned more than a few things on the way back. --Jerry McCulley

Could have been much better if...........2005-08-20
1/ This Is Where I Came In: One of my most favorite Gibb's song ever. Maurice's rhythm guitar is excellent. Quite a strange song for a usual Bee Gees' ear but yet perfect (5/5).
2/ She Keeps On Coming: Another of my favorite from this album. Back to the 60's rock root with some modern touch. Robin sounds so much unlike himself. At first, I thought it was Maurice on vocal. Love the arrangement and the erotic lyrics. (4.5/5)
3/ Sacred Truth: Written for the Backstreet Boys and that's why it don't sound as good as a true Bee Gees song even though Barry Gibb's vocal is brilliant. The verses are quite good, however the chorus is too "boy-band-ish" to be a good Bee Gees song. (3.5/5)
4/ Wedding Day: Too catchy to be regarded as a hit, but I'll have it on my wedding since I'm a big fan of the Bee Gees. (3/5)
5/ Man in the Middle: Nice job, Mo. Love the lyrics. My girlfriend loves it even though she's not a Bee Gees fan. (4/5)
6/ Deja Vu: Quite a catchy song even though I'm not quite sure what the lyrics about. Seems to be another boy band-ish song. The Bee Gees sure can do better than this.(3/5)
7/ Technicolor Dreams: My favorite. A fun song even out of style. I think Barry loves the 40's music. But not sure why he whispered " Kiss my ass" before the song. (5/5)
8/ Walking on Air: Another Mo's effort, sound so much like "Omega Man", nothing special except for the Beach Boys blending harmony.(3.5/5)
9/ Loose Talk Cost Live: Many people like this song, I don't even though it's a good ballad. Barry's voice sounds a bit creepy here.(3/5)
10/ Embrace:I really dislike this song. The Euro-dance pop pattern freaks me out. Why Robin? It was so out of date and cheap. Try something better. (2/5)
11/ An Extra Mile: Rumors had it the brothers wrote this song for Olympic Sydney 1998 which sounds so much unlike an Olympic song. Not one of my favorite anyway. But still a good song. (3/5)
12/ Voice of the Wilderness: Lyrically too long to be a rock song. Need more guitar solos and shorter verse. (3/5)
For a die-hard Bee Gees' fan, this album is a must. But for those who don't like boy band music, go for "Still Waters" or "One" instead to appreciate the magic of the Gibb's music.
Sorry, Last One.......2004-07-09
Surely, this LP showed that the Bee Gees is capable of writing and singing different styles of songs. Technicolor Dreams showed the slow ballad, Voice in the Wilderness showed a strong rock, Embrace showed a strong jazz feeling.
Barry and Robin Gibb, keep it on!
Different Times, Different Bee Gees.......2004-06-27
Too bad it was their last.......2004-01-22
They went out with a bang!.......2003-12-22
1. This Is Where I Came In. 5/5 Stars. This songs starts the album off well, with an interesting acoustic sound. This what Barry meant by "Back to the Basics." It's at a faster pace than their earlier work, but it's a good cut none the less.
2. She Keeps On Coming. 5/5 Stars. This started off as my favorite song on the album. But it slipped after I heard more of the album. Still, it's a great tempo. You would think that this was written by The Rolling Stones.
3. Sacred Trust. 3/5 Stars. This is the weekest song on the first half of the album. It's a pretty ballad, but it could have been a lot better.
4. Wedding Day 5/5 Stars. I didn't like this song at first but it quickly grew on me when I heard Barry and Robin's interplay. One of their finest.
5. Man In The Middle 5/5 Stars. This is first song Maurice sings. It's a great autobiographical track especially the chorus. Concert set-up wise, Robin would be the obvious choice to sing this one, but he can't. This is Maurice's song.
6. Deja Vu. 3/5 Stars. This Robin-Led Song had potential but it gets repetitive after a while. Also there was a strange rap going on at the end. What's up with that? There is a bonus:At the end of the song you can hear the crew talking if you listen close.
7. Technicoulor Dreams:1/5 Stars. My least favorite track on the album. It sounds like a bad show tune based on Barry's singing. The most annoying part is the clarinent. Just like on Deja Vu, you can hear the crew talking at the beginning of the song. The only good thing about it is that it makes a good intro to Walking On Air.
8. Walking On Air: 5/5 Stars. My favorite song on the album. The synthesizers, the tempo, the drum programming, the lyrics, the guitars, and of course, Maurice's incredible voice.
9. Loose Talk Costs Lives: 3/5 Stars. An average ballad. C'Mon Barry! You can do better!
10. Embrace. 5/5 Stars. I just love the up-beat tempo on this one. Reminds me a bit of For Whom the Bell Tolls.
11. The Extra Mile. 4/5 Stars. Good Orchastra feel, but the lack of 3-part-harmony ruins it.
12. Voice In The Wilderness. 4/5 Stars. A great rocker to end the album, and consequently one of the greatest bands that ever lived.

To Import or Not To Import.......2001-08-05
This review is specifically directed towards the two bonus tracks included on the import version. Both are gorgeous songs and well worth having, particularly if you're a fan of Robin's vocals. "Promise the Earth" offers a top-notch performance by Robin of a beautifully-crafted song. It has the strongest euro-pop beat on the album. In short, it's high energy and it's phenomenal! "Just in Case" is a lovely ballad. For those who've seen the Keppel Road video, this is the work-in-progress that was showcased there. Robin sings the verse, and Barry is the dominant voice on the chorus. The song turned out to be far more beautiful than I could've imagined.
These two tracks (together with "Embrace," "Deja Vu," "Sacred Trust" and "Wedding Day") are my favourites on a CD that is full of great songs. If you like what you hear on the sample tracks, you'll not be disappointed with this CD. Get it and you'll see why these three brothers are among the best songwriters and performers of the 20th century!

Product Description
Jason Kao Hwang (b. 1957) is a highly respected improviser who also has a number of compositions and film scores to his credit. The Floating Box is a major contemporary work that gives voice not only to the Asian immigrant experience in America in particular but also to the immigrant experience in general. With the collaboration of librettist Catherine Filloux, The Floating Box is an original story inspired by the oral histories of Chinese-Americans living in Chinatown. The story of Eva/Yee-Wa, a young Chinese-American woman living with her mother, is the story of many diasporic peoples who have sought a better life in new, often harsh surroundings. The poetry of Fillouxs libretto fuses perfectly with Hwangs eclectic score, beautifully capturing the complex, intimate relationships among these three characters. The opera employs both Chinese and Western instruments in an ensemble of eight players: piccolo/flute/alto flute; Bb clarinet/bass clarinet; vibraphone; pipa (Chinese lute); accordion; percussion, including Tibetan chimes and singing bowls, whirling air tubes, Chinese tom toms, and a Buddhist fan drum; erhu/gaohu/zhonghu (a family of two-stringed Chinese violins categorized as huqin); and cello. In Hwangs skilled hands, these instruments together forge a rich amalgam of soundin the composers words, complex suspensions rather than homogenous solutions. The precision with which Hwang mines each instruments sonic possibilities and the imaginative ways with which he draws upon subsets of the full ensemble result in a vibrant musical narrative that propels the drama forward to its conclusion. The kaleidoscopic range of musical styles employed--atonality, blues, Broadway, Chinese opera, chromaticism, impressionism, jazz, pop--establishes The Floating Box as the work of an artist who is completely comfortable bridging multiple musical worlds.
