The Long Island-based Nine Days' major-label debut will most likely be remembered for the track "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)." Prominently showcased on TV's Dawson's Creek, the song's mindless but infectious hook was almost guaranteed to hit its mark in yearning young adults. Even without the visual aid, Nine Days' sound works best when they're going for universal emotion instead of quirky wordplay and, though definitely not original, the songs on The Madding Crowd are well-produced and competently executed. While the band claims Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan among their influences (hence the track "Bob Dylan"), they're not far from Third Eye Blind ("Absolutely") or even Bon Jovi ("Sometimes") thanks to vocalist/guitarist John Hampson's raspy voice. The group's mixture of folk, rock, and essential emotional bombast comes naturally to them, even if it seems like the band could be doing so much more. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars Actually their fourth album..........2007-06-11

But it was their major label debut. This album is very mainstream and pop(py) at times but shouldn't take away from the fact that these guys are top-flight musicians and interesting songwriters who had been playing together 5 years before this record ever came out. They are more than the throwaway pop that some of the reviews seem to indicate on here. I'm just a really big fan of ninedays and they are currently touring behind a new record (Slow Motion life Pt. 1) and if you get a chance to see them live you should really take it, impessive live act. All six of their other records are available at their official web sites. Please buy all means, if you liked this record at all and are even a little interested in some of their other work (much of it vastly different than what you hear on this album) check them out:

(...)

Great music still to be had from them and they are a great bunch of guys who got shafted by
Sony after they wouldn't release their second album since it wasn't as "radio friendly" as this one. It is availabe (for free no less) at (...)

Thanks for listening :-)

5 out of 5 stars A flash in the pan...but a good disc, nonetheless.......2007-05-25

Nine Days is most known for their pop smash "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" from 2000. This song became an instant smash. But, just like that, Nine Days was pretty much off in the sunset. In the end, you could say they were popular for...NINE DAYS!!!

Okay, all joking aside, this is a very solid disc for those that don't like the "bubble-gum" pop, but are not into the heavier rock, as well. After "Absolutely", they released "If I Am", which was a modest hit, but simply couldn't match the fanfare from their debut single. After owning the disc for seven years, it's still a good disc to jam to on a sunny summer Saturday with nothing else to do. Other notable songs include "257 Weeks", "Crazy", and "Revolve".

I believe they released a sophomore album in 2002, but don't quote me on it because I don't know much else about that. I highly doubt they will emerge out of nowhere in the short-term future to release a "come-back" album, so fans of the band will have to rely on the memories that this effort generates.

3 out of 5 stars Are you sure Bryan Adams is not the lead singer?.......2007-04-27

several tracks have me double checking the credits to see if Bryan Adams name appears. I just can;t get past it. An ok CD.

4 out of 5 stars A very good, yet extremely cheesy, pop rock album - I wouldn't call it classic, though - genre fans will love it - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-10

Nine Days, made famous by, *sigh*, Dawson's Creek (because of "Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)"), is certainly a cheesy album that's a guilty pleasure, but it's still very good pop rock. Every song here is a good or great pop rock song that's unfortunately hindered by the band's cheesy vocals and style. You can tell that if the band tried hard enough to be serious that they could be an amazing band as the hooks are just SO good. The singer is the most questionable part of this band - you'll either love him or hate him as he has an MTV-like attitude and style. If you can get past that, however, you'll discover some reasonably good and catchy lyrics that help add to its appeal. The musicianship is pretty good and the production is clear, though it mostly just sounds like your standard radio-friendly late 90's pop rock. If it weren't so cheesy this would've EASILY been a classic. If you happen to be a fan of the genre, though, this is still very good stuff. Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2005-12-12

I actually have somewhat of a inderect connection to the band because one of my professors' has a son that's in the band, Jeremy Dean. I remember the class where he mentioned his son and his band and obviously, like all father's would do, he bragged about him and his band to the class. He worked them up to be the next rock sensations so I figured they probably weren't that good. He gave no mention of the bands name but did play there hit single "absolutely" which surprised me to think that his son was actually in that band. So when I got home that day I went to their website and listened to sample tracks. I immediately discovered that this band was more than just there hit "absolutely." Most of the songs on the album were actually a lot better than there hit single. So.....I highly recommend this album because it contains a lot of different types of songs and is lyrically brilliant. The tunes are catchy and never get old and played out.

4 out of 5 stars A unique collection of film music.......2001-06-17

This recording is generally very well performed and produced. The playing of the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba is very high caliber indeed. I am not a big fan of movie music, but I was glad I bought this CD.

I bought this album for the highlight selection, the Elegy for Viola and Orchestra from Lady Caroline Lamb. This piece is pure heaven. The only piece I know that is even somewhat similar is Vaughan-Williams' Flos Campi. The soloist, orchestra and conductor are magnificent in Bennett's work - this is reason enough to own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars delightful.......2001-02-13

I remember Bennett for his wonderful film scores for Nicholas and Alexandra(the fold-out LP album had a regal splendour to it) and Lady Caroline Lamb. Marcus Dodds conducted the Lamb score with the New Philharmonia Orchestra on LP (Angel S-36946) - now out of print. Gamba`s conducting is marvellous on this Chandos re-recording. But Dodds is unsurpassed for his romantic and passionate handling, with Peter Mark giving an intense interpretation of the Caroline theme. Overall, the LP has

greater presence and tension. Well, soundtrack recordings are usually more impassioned and sensitive than re-recordings. Still, credit should go to Gambas for his consistent high quality in the Chandos film music series. Incidentally, the Lamb LP recording is listed in the Library of Congress (No. 73-750111). If you can`t get the LP try that Library!

    4 out of 5 stars Very nice neo-classical scores.......2006-12-06

There are some very nice art songs in these 3 musicals. Unlike Sondheim or Guettel, the songs follow quite traditional classical patterns and make for very nice but unchallenging listening.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply charming..........2002-07-14

These excerpts of the original musicals by Gary Schocker are simply a pleasure to listen to. This shows once more, that Musical Theatre litterature can range in a wide variety of styles. Far From the Madding Crowd is like a cross between The Secret Garden and Riverdance, complimented by the fantastic voices of Liz Callaway, Brian d'Arcy James, Victoria Clark, Emily Skinner, and many more. A must for any Musical Theatre lover who is constantly seeking the songs that "no one has yet heard".

      4 out of 5 stars big improvement.......2004-08-28

this cd is far better than thier first two by far. the new vocalist always is a big plus. could be used as sort of a heavy metal soundtrack for lord of the rings. a must have for fans of symphony x and blind guardian

4 out of 5 stars Great power(ful) metal with folk influences.......2004-05-22

Far from the Madding Crowd is the third album of Danish band Wuthering Heights. This band has evolved from album to album; while their first one Within was a lot more proggier, the second one To Travel for Evermore signalled the band's shift towards a more power metal-oriented style. And now with their new one, they have become a more straightforward power metal act, but quite different from the typical Euro power bands out there. A very subtle Celtic influence abounds the songs throughout the entire album with a rather aggressive new vocalist: Nils Patrik Johansson. Former Tad Morose, Memento Mori and Fifth Reason singer Kristian Andren is gone and replaced with a more suitable frontman for the band's current musical ambitions.

Wuthering Heights is guitarist Erik Ravn's band. Ravn not only composes all songs, but he also writes the lyrics. It's been this way since their debut Within (1999) and seems unlikely to change any time soon. He does let his new bandmates add their own flavour but after listening to this band for a few times the Erik Ravn touch is easily recognised.

The new singer Nils Johansson has a voice that draws comparisons to vocal idols such as Ronnie James Dio and Russel Allen from Symphony X. It may just be me, because of the folk themes of the songs, but I am also reminded of Martin Walkyier from Skyclad. Harry Conklin of Jag Panzer also comes to mind during the more aggressive parts of his vocal delivery. Since all these singers I mentioned are big favourites of mine, it is difficult to ignore such a talented vocalist. As much as I like former singer Kristian Andren's unique style more, I think Nils is a better fit considering the type of metal they have chosen to play on Far from the Madding Crowd. Then again, Nils wouldn't work on the band's first album Within, which is a very prog-laden disc with slight neoclassical interludes and more complex songwriting approach.

The inclusion of flute and symphonic strings that introduce us to the first song "Gather Ye Wild" ties in seamlessly with one of the strongest and catchiest tunes of the album: "The Road Goes Ever On". These Celtic ingredients are available on each and every track but they never take away from the songcraft. The music on this disc borrows a lot of speed metal riffs and combines them with catchy melodies displaying galloping power metal riffs and some neoclassical lead guitar work which was also present on the previous discs. The folk theme runs through all the compositions adding its flavour and defining the sound of this record.

The centrepiece of the album is without question the "Longing for the Woods" trilogy but the tracks are independent of each other. One of them is used in the beginning, the other one is in the middle and the last one is towards the end of the CD. They all contain the same chorus and this is a central motive anchoring the three parts together into a single epic. It could be argued that the choruses being identical in all three songs is a deterrent factor but I personally like it a lot cause it gives the album a sense of unity.

Producer Tommy Hansen (Helloween, Pretty Maids) has done an outstanding job here and this may be the best Wuthering Heights disc production-wise. While I still like their obscure debut Within the best, I think Far from the Madding Crowd has a more appealing value to power metal fans that look for something different. This is particularly recommended to fans of Skyclad, Symphony X, Blind Guardian and Falconer.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than The Previous Two Albums.......2004-04-17

This third album in their trilogy is lightyears ahead of its predecessors. The songs are less prog oriented and more straight ahead with catchy choruses and more overtones of celtic influence. More AOL friendly (that is, if celtic sounding metal was in vogue). The lead singers voice is a reminder of Ronnie James Dio when hitting high notes and reminds me of Masters of Reality on the low key softer (spoken) parts. The album has moments of intense speed oriented metal and has moments of a Falconer/Finntroll celtic riffs. The alternation of speed and mellow breaks up and makes a more interesting album out of what could've been a rather mediocre album such as the previous release which was, in my mind, lackluster and ....well....average. In two words this album is "more focused". Hope this helped make your decision to buy it. If you don't, its your loss.

5 out of 5 stars A Celtic version of Rhapsody.......2004-03-18

With the amount of cd's in my collection over the years it's hard to get an album that blows me away. I always loved the Scorpions and then Talisman, those guys rock. Then along the way I stumbled on the Progressive-Power metal of Rhapsody which was so fresh and good. Finally we get to Wuthering Heights. WOW!
Especially if you are a fan of Rhapsody this should appeal to you. Not the same voice of Fabio Leone but more along the lines of a harsher Ronnie James Dio but it works very well. To me some of these songs would have fit right into a Rhapsody cd. More of a Celt twist to it though. (Think Village of the Dwarves from the Dawn of Victory cd).
