It made sense that Keith Richards's first solo album offered better Chuck Berry-derived rockers than Mick "Keep Up with the Times" Jagger's, but who knew that Richards would give up more of the funk, too? His X-Pensive Winos (with estimable drummer Steve Jordan filling the Charlie Watts role) lay it down in a tight-but-loose fashion, and it doesn't hurt that Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell drop by, either. The best surprise of all, though, is the rueful, Cajun-tinged ballad "Locked Away." --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars Keith's best, but not a five star effort.......2007-06-08

This might be a five-star Keith Richards' solo effort, but it is not a classic album by any means. What this album seems to miss most of all is Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts. Many folks believe that the absence of Jagger is a positive but I totally disagree. The Rolling Stones were a band, not the Keef project. As much as I believe that a strong case can be made for Richards' as the most influential guitarist in all of rock, in order for the Stones to be the greatest rock and roll band ever, they needed the unique jazzy chops of Watts and the inimitable Mick Jagger. It's naive to think that Keith wrote all the music and Jagger merely came up with lyrics. For anyone who knows a little history, even Keith admits that he didn't provide the music for all the hits (nor, for that matter, did Jagger write all the words).
That being said, this is a highly enjoyable album with a very loose, funky, vibe to accompany the expected riff and roll that comes from Richards. An entire recording with Keith's vocals, however, only shows one way in which Jagger is missed. Additionally, there isn't much of interest lyrically. The strongest lyrics are those that speak of the fractured relationship the Glimmer Twins had at this point and they are typical Keith - blunt and to the point.
Don't delude yourself into thinking that this is the lost Stones classic so many have been pining for - it is not. It is a fun party record that will move your body and bring a smile to your face.

5 out of 5 stars Funky punky rock.......2007-01-14

One of the best albums ever. Keith showed his raw earthy talent, and this album will make you sway those hips.

5 out of 5 stars Keith Richards Lets His Funk Loose.......2006-12-08

What a unique album this is. Imagine a mix of solid old-school rock and roll, old-fashioned African-American funk (horns, backup singers, freaky bass lines), and even a little cajun on a few numbers, and you can kind of get an idea of what this album is all about. It's great fun to listen to from beginning to end. Keith Richards' voice is not the greatest, but he packs so much emotion and nuance into his singing that it more than makes up for it. Richards has always quested for the roots of rock and roll, and he continues to resurrect and refine ideas that created the genre--mixing jazz, rock, funk, and folk to create his own sounds. Encore!

4 out of 5 stars Gave it a listen, 18 years later.......2006-06-02

I liked it much better when I gave it a listen 18 years after it was released. It is much better than any of the drivel that the Stones have released over the last 20 years, and certainly lends to the theory that Keith is and was the real composer of the two.

Steve Jordan shines on drums. He out "Charlies" Charley!

5 out of 5 stars This is the greatest musical genius of our time. .......2005-12-08

Listen carefully. This is the guy who wrote all of the Rolling Stones' songs and then let the other guy have some credit, the other guy being the greatest vocalist in the history of recorded music. Forget about all that drug and alcohol talk. Listen to him, revere him, respect him.

There is far more here than meets the eye.

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Love.......2006-10-26

Drag out your old high school and college memories and get ready to sit back and unwind. You'll sing your heart out to Dave Melillo as he teases and tickles your brain with acoustic riffs and picking for six tracks. No track on this disc is skippable. Beginning strong with "Sam's Song" fans will recall the difficulty of a long distance relationship and long to be held by a significant other. Melillo continues to tug on your heartstrings with "Knights of the Island Counter" which lovingly discusses and recalls a fun, forget-all night with good friends. If you remember hating high school, like all teenagers did, "This Is 2005" is sure to make you smile and sing along as you go back to those rebellious days of your past. Melillo uses catchy lyrics, lovable guitar, and memories shared by all to make this EP a masterpiece. Fans will be anticipating the release of Dave's first full length until the day it arrives in stores.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Melillo Is Addicting.......2006-09-20

After hearing Dave Melillo's Talk Is Cheap EP for the first time, I was completely addicted. I couldn't get enough of the acoustic driven melodies and lyrics Dave Melillo incorporates into his music. I think he is absolutely going to blow up within the next year. His music is simply too catchy for people not to love and get attached and addicted to. It's just one of those CDs that you simply cannot get sick of. I've actually let this CD sit in my car's CD player for weeks without removing it because every time I got into my car to drive, I wanted to listen to it. Dave Melillo is a very talented artist and I reccommend that you buy this album if you love mellow, catchy, acoustic driven rock.

Plus, when I heard the lyric "I've got some problems but we've got ten dollars that's enough to get us wasted before the night is over these past five days I've been completely sober but tonight I'm getting ripped wide open" I couldn't find a better lyric to express what I was feeling at that time. And from that moment on, I've been hooked!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the listen.......2006-08-29

So normally i'm not as into more mellow music like Dave Melillo, but for some reason he became an exception. I think it's the honesty and genuine nature of Dave's lyrics and music as a whole. I just really feel like I can relate to what he sings about. And he's not one of those big coorporatest musicians and has no motivations from the record company. He just writes what he likes and what he feels and experiences.

After listening to the album a couple of times, i was hooked. completely obsessed. I mean, if big rocks stars that do cocaine and have groupies is your thing, go listen to that. But if you'd like to hear something down-to-earth for once that might actually leave you feeling satisfied - pick up this CD and give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Something to write home about.......2006-07-07

Aside from a couple of independent pop-punk releases, 2006 has been a crappy year for rock. Almost every new record released this year has SUCKED in a major way. So yeah, I was glad to hear David Melillo's "talk is cheap EP" a couple of weeks ago. Every song here is just so good, the perfect mix of light acoustic rock and backyard, campfire pop-punk. It's almost as if dave is sitting in your living room when you listen. Needless to say, the production/mixing is crazy good. You owe it to yourself to escape the crap and try something new. I can't wait to hear the full length

5 out of 5 stars Dave Melillo.......2006-06-19

Dave was picked up by Drive Tru before even graduating high school! And for good reason. This may easily be the next biggest act. It's obvious that singer/song writers are what labels are searching for and throwing into main stream. Dave Melillo happens to be one of the few that I actually listen to and enjoy. This CD has 6 well writte teenage anthems. Catchy and heart felt. Mark my word... Dave will be doing great things in 2006. Buy this CD and turn it up in your car... you will know all the words in a matter of minutes.

Welcome back to the mouth that never shuts. "Talk Is Cheap Vol. 2" contains the second night of Henry's spoken word shows at the Enmore Theater in Australia, recorded live in April 2001. More stories, bile, and ranting diatribes from your favorite graying, limping, philosophic, misanthropic curmudgeon.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Same as Vol. 1.......2007-07-18

I love good ol' Hank, he is usually consistently funny and unapologetically crass. The problem I have with this CD however is that it is nearly identical to volume one. I realize that these were two nights in the same venue, but I assumed since they recorded them separately they would contain different material.

Not so much.

Even volume one has some of the same stories as the "Rollins in the Wry" and "Think Tank" albums. I know Rollins sticks to a loose script and therefore every show is different and unique, but these were just not varied enough to warrant spending $10 on the same thing.

If you bought volume one, don't buy volume two. Otherwise, you might be ok.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best spoken word CDs he's done.......2006-02-26

I first saw Henry Rollins at a spoken word show in Philadelphia in early 2001. Because this CD is the closest set to that show, due to it being on the same tour, it holds a special place in my sentimental little heart. Now, that aside, Rollins is definitely on top of his game on this one... the story about the Kiss Army was not only almost painfully true (I know a card-carrying member myself), but, one of the most hilarious stories he's told. The parts geared specifically for the Austrailian audience are a bit confusing if you have never experienced the country yourself, but, you get the picture well enough to laugh & ponder along with it. The stories about India were lengthier at the U.S. show I went to, but, the general idea is still there, and the MAN gives us alot to chew on regarding the "rock star" place Americans in general have in the big caste system of the world -- some touching & thought-provoking stuff there. The best thing about listening to Rollins do anything, whether it be music, spoken word, radio shows, etc, is that he really is passionate about what he has to say & truly loves his work. That's always refreshing to see, & makes a person want to come back for more. Keep on fighting the good fight, Uncle Hank!

This is the first of three CDs, documenting Henry's 2001 talking tour. It was a long one, spanning many countries. Volume one showcases his two nights at the Enmore Theater in Sydney, Australia. Henry wanted to put the recordings out with very little editing and with, he says, "all my inherent motor-mouthed flaws intact."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and awesome.......2005-02-11

Rollins at his usual best, caught live in Sydney, Australia. There are 3 additional volumes in this series, ending with volume 4 at SJSU (San Jose State University) in California) over varying years. The other three, incidentally, are in Australia -something Hank even comments and explains in the liner notes of Vol. 3.

Bottom line, if you know the Rollins spoken word game, you know what to expect and you know he NEVER lets you down. It's awesome and amazing. BUT, do yourself, and Hank a favor and get all 4 volumes directly from Hank himself at the 2-13-61 website (for cheaper as well).

    Enjoy.

You can gather that 'Talk Is Cheap' Volumes 1 and 2 were recorded April 23 and 24 of 2001 and in the tradition of the earlier installments of the recurring bloviating nightmare, not a great deal of editing was done. Remember talk is cheap and we're all judged by what we do, not what we say" - Henry Rollins.

It's good angry stuff, as per usual. I love the part about The Ramones. His commentary on Iraq is interesting in retrospect. It gets 4 stars because the last track ends oddly and abruptly, mid-story, mid-sentence, mid-word practically.
