Editorial Reviews
Bubblegum is Mark Lanegan's sixth solo album, but still he's relatively unknown to all but a few. Since going solo, the former Screaming Trees frontman has attracted a cult following, but if a man can be judged by the stature of his friends, then surely Bubblegum marks the beginning of Lanegan's turn in the spotlight. Featuring such high-profile guests as PJ Harvey ("Hit the City" and "Come to Me"), Guns N' Roses/Velvet Revolver's Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan ("Strange Religion"), Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers' frontman Greg Dulli ("Methamphetamine Blues"), and Masters of Reality's Chris Goss (who shares production credits, as well as appearing on a number of tracks), the songs on Bubblegum display a breadth of style that matches Lanegan's trademark depth of substance. And though he kept his profile comparatively low as a longterm collaborator with Queens of the Stone Age, his two bandmates Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri feature heavily throughout (Homme, in particular, plays guitar or drums on five of the tracks here). But this is by no means a QOTSA album. Bubblegum has a sound all its own, and Lanegan is firmly at the helm, with his gravelly voice and somber observations making him sound more and more like Tom Waits. Its pleasures may not be immediate to all listeners, but once found, they're difficult to shake. --Robert Burrow

My 1st Monkee LP!.......2007-07-19
I wanted to write a nasty review, but it's really superb .......2007-07-16
The sound quality is great in both mono & stereo. It's very similar in sound quality to the Beatles Capitol Records releases that just came out recently. The bonus material is entertaining, as well as strong, I also loved some of the stuff I'd never heard before. The booklet is also really good, with lots of rare photos and the in depth story of the making of this album.
The overall packaging is very classy. It makes me hope that The Beatles get this kind of treatment through Apple records, or my favorite band, Deep Purple get this sort of stunning re-packaging from Rhino.
I grew up on the mono versions of the Monkees albums, all the way up to their fifth album "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees" in April 1968, so I was really thrilled to see that mono finally made it to CD. I've always thought that the mono mixes were better overall, giving an overall impression of a heavier rock band sound. Though, I got the feeling that the Headquarters mono mix was a fold down of the stereo mix. As for the stereo mastering, it sounded brighter than the original Rhino CD's, with some added compression, and the signal might have been pushed harder than the older Rhino discs. But on the whole, a wonderful job. Let's hope the next two albums (released in mono & stereo) get this same kind of royal treatment.
Sure they seem to be milking the Monkee-cow, but when it's this strong, milk it baby. Next up, The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees?

S.2 is a dull Davy tune called Hard to Believe.Mike's country twanging is featured in Hangin' Round. Peter does a brief goofy spoken Pig thing. Then an extended version of Mickey's Pleasant Valley Sunday. Mick again (with the Moog, Man!) in Daily Nightly. Then Mick "MC's" Mike in Don't Call On Me. Ending with Star Collector! "Bye Bye! Bye Bye"....

pleasant valley tuesday.......2007-07-11
the music on this album is an eclectic mix of country/rock/pop/lounge/psychedelia sounds that blend surprisingly well. producer douglas, under-appreciated at the time by the band, helped maintain a unified overall vibe, despite the stylistic shifts from track to track. my personal favorite songs are PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY, WHAT AM I DOING HANGING 'ROUND?, DAILY NIGHTLY, THE DOOR INTO SUMMER, LOVE IS ONLY SLEEPING and, of course, CUDDLY TOY...but the whole album is ear candy from start to finish (even the much-maligned davy jones number, HARD TO BELIEVE).
the deluxe edition of this album features a bunch of bonus tracks, including many previously unreleased mixes. i found myself prefering some of these to the originals (i had similar feelings listening to the also-included mono mix of the entire album).
andrew sandoval's liner notes are well written and helpfully informative (well, not a whole lot of new info for my jaded ears, but still nicely presented). all-in-all, i thought the whole package was a great tribute to the original classic. i can only hope and pray that the folks in charge of the beatles' upcoming re-mixes can be half as responsible and fan-friendly as andrew.
long live the texas praire chicken!

Great Band.......2007-03-31
Most of my friends were into the modern scene, but i kept plucking bands out like this, and when you listen to music like this band here the then mid eighties rock was poor in comparison.
(Theme From) The Monkees ,Last Train To Clarksville ,I Wanna Be Free,I'm A Believer,Stepping Stone,Look Out(Here Comes Tomorrow),Pleasent Valley Sunday,Daydream Believer, and there is a stack of other songs here.
Could do without.......2007-01-10
Goin' Down is the best song on earth!!!.......2006-09-09
This is a really good band!!! I like them very much, they're funny AND they have good music. AND they're G-rated. AND they're cute. Micky is ugly but funny and has a good voice. Mike is good-looking, also funny, and writes good songs. Davy Jones is annoying, sings like a duck, and is VERY cute. Peter is real funny, also good-looking, and has a really bad voice.
The karaoke CD was dumb, but maybe I only think that because my mom and I only sing the backup, so it was just instrumental. LOL
My favorite songs on this are "I'm a Believer" (duh) "Randy Scouse Git" (creepy but cool) "Mary, Mary" (I can play that on the phone!!!) "The Girl That I Knew Somewhere" "Your Auntie Grizelda" and "Goin' Down". My only regret is that there was no "This Just Doesn't Seem to be my Day." BEST SOUNDTRACK SONG IN THE WORLD!!!
I love this TV show, CD, and own a shirt that says The Monkees on it. Plus I'm 12 years old. So they've survived 40 years. Wow.
P.S. I hate the Porpoise Song and Listen to the Band because they are terrible. Last Train to Clarksville annoys me. Otherwise it was 100% good.

Unless you're a snob, a good Monkees collection belongs on your shelves, not too far from discs by the Turtles, the Lovin' Spoonful, and other avatars of clean, occasionally rocking '60s Top 40 pop. Greatest Hits is a more than generous stack, bringing together not only the obvious megahits ("I'm a Believer," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," the incredibly propulsive "Valleri") but also a number of tunes that had the bad luck to fall on the wrong side of the act's swift rise and fall. Foremost among these is "Porpoise Song," a lyrically incomprehensible Goffin/King stab at psychedelia that's at once a crass cash-in and one of the loveliest, most fragile sounds to emerge from the American hippie dream. --Rickey WrightAlbum Description

Monkees for Beginners.......2007-06-03
Welcome to the Monkee House (in memory of Kurt Vonnegut).......2007-05-05
But, let's forget this chit-chat and discuss the Monkees. Some time ago I was sitting in a laudramat (yes, Seer's wash clothes-unfortunately), and "Last Train to Clarksville" came over the sound system. I remember thinking what a great example of 60's pop this song was. The riff was catchy, memorable and, if you listen close, the cymbals create that train hiss waiting to leave the station. How appropriately clever. No wonder this was a big hit for them.
Regardless of your own take on the Monkees, they did produce alot of mid-sixties tunes that were not bad. Not bad at all. And even if they were brought together by the California illusion machine and couldn't play their own instruments, that is not enough to make you not enjoy all this. Sure, the concept of the show was certainly inspired by the Beatle's movie "A Hard Day's Night" and the quick action shots. But, the Monkee's producers, I feel, overdid the craziness, the inanity, and the foolish many times throughout the show's run. However, it was entertainment and alot of great fun.
Of course, you cannot sell a fabricated group like this without some substance and the Monkees met expectations in spades. They had professional musicians as a backdrop, had talented songwriters (Neil Diamond,Boyce-Hart, Goffin-King) contribute wonderful tunes. And, the icing on the cake is that they could all sing - and very well at that. This was not shabby at all and incredibly successful.
Now, I avoid getting overly analytical here. There are no mystical answers to the Universe offered. There are no puzzles or answers that you must stress your weary mind to think about. This is just good mid-sixties pop that was enjoyable. Nothing more, nothing less. And, let's be honest, we all need this from time to time just to give some balance to the world. I like fun. I hope you do too.
Of course, all the goodies are included here; "Clarksville", "I'm a Believer","Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Daydream Believer" etc. etc. For the most part this c.d. is glorious. However, in their career, the Monkees tried to adapt to the psychedelic vibe of the time with the "Porpoise Song", which I think is a stilted attempt at best. From there, the tunes fail to impress. However, we still have those earlier gems at least.
I realize that I may get criticized soundly for this review. After all, it it a far cry from my reknown, over-analytical (and sometimes pompous-but don't tell) reviews of late. No matter. I don't care. As Darwin quipped to me, "I am having more fun than a barrel full of Monkeys watching people respond to my theory". So am I dear people. So am I.

Fantastic Band.......2007-03-31
But in those years some excellent songs were made. The Monkees Theme,Last Train To Clarksville,I'm A Believer,(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone,A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,,Pleasant Valley Sunday,Daydream Believer,as well as many other hits on this cd.Another song i like which is not here called Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow is a favorite of mine.
They had some great songwriters helping them such as Neil Diamond and the Boyce and Heart team. They also had writing credits to alot of songs of their own. This group was one of the best 60's bands.
Don't MONKEE with a good thing.......2007-01-08
Although the rare "D.W. Washburn" is included, a legitimate single that was heard quite a bit in 1968 ("Tapioca Tundra") is conspicuously absent. There's no logic to this song assembly. The 16 page liner note booklet is quite thorough and nicely done-- it has some great photos, recording date info as well as history for each song. It is in these details that we discover "Randy Scouse Git" got airplay in Britain, and "Mary Mary" was popular in Australia. Ah... "Greatest INTERNATIONAL Hits," then.
The four-star rating in spite of criticisms is because this reviewer been a fan since Day One, and definitely will remain so. The Monkees were always fun, both on TV and the radio, and not even an ill-conceived "Hits" package can ruin that.

Little bit of soul actually sounds dated for '67 should be like '64
Soul Man,the great screetching sound(the blues brothers did a version of soul man)
Incense and Peppermints-what do the words mean?groovy man, cool psychedelic tune
Gimme Some Lovin'-another 'soul' song i think its steve winwood in the band
I Think We're Alone Now-another tommy james hit, children behave!
Happy Together, the turtles big hit that everyone was singing that year, classic pop style harmonies
Windy i used to think it was wendy for years, but another fine harmony by the association
Groovin' the rascals slow summertime ballad
the Letter- i think the 1st song to have airplane sound effects
Respect hmmm aretha's sock it to me anthem
if you want to hear some songs from '67 this is a good way to know them for the year, they were all popular and had good pop crafted tunes that are easy to listen to ,you still hear them on oldies stations as a regular playlist.

Hey not "98.6" but worth owning!.......2007-06-24
It is inexcusable that the powers that be behind the CD release of "One Hit Wonders" could take a 5 Star idea and turn it into ***.
The first and not as egregious as the second error is the total playing time. With a myriad of great tunes left off the release they could have given 12-14 tracks. To think a CD holds 80 minutes and not even half is full!
As two other fine reviews stated previously (M.Doane and Jonathan Schult) the legendary "One Tin Soldier (The Legend Of Billy Jack)" by Coven is not the version the listener is in tune with. It is both misleading and disgraceful.
This sort of thing was taken one step further frequently in Europe in the late 1960's and early 1970's by offering discount compilation of hits but the original recordings were not used. Hired studio musicians performed the tunes!
The majority of news here is good. "Reflections Of My Life - The Marmalade" is one of the finest and most intense lyrical compositions ever. You could make a case that as long as its contents are found here anything else is gravy.
"Come On Down To My Boat" - Every Mother's Son reminds us older folks of the great summers past. The first note takes you back to a simpler world. We didn't have the internet or even calculators but we did have some amazing rock and roll radio.
"98.6" - Keith may be the most underrated tune on the CD. Although simplistic in its arrangement, something sticks in the brain from the initial listening.
"Monster Mash" - Bobby Pickett is a staple of every Halloween. People were laughing then and still are now, but we are still enjoying the song.
Ten solid tracks and only a couple of gripes. Not bad.
Enjoy the music and be well,

ORIGINAL CASTE's .......2006-08-06
At first, they released two singles through DOT records, with little success. In 1969,they signed contract with the T.A. Records division of Bell Records. The single "ONE TIN SOLDIER"[composed by Lambert/Potter] and the album of same title were released. It has become a highly coveted collector's item.
They were produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter who became the celebrated lead songwriters/producers at Dunhill Records as they churned out hit after charting hit with various recording artists in the late 60's and throughout the first half of the 70's decade. The ORIGINAL CASTE's group leader, Bruce composed several excellent and fully loaded pop songs found on their debut album.
Title song "One Tin Soldier"[Bell/TA-186] was more popular in U.S.A.(No.34/Billboard Chart; 1969)than their next single "Mr. Monday", yet, both hit #1 in their native Canada and Japan, respectively. Many cover versions of "One Tin Soldier" had been issued subsequently. Especially, Coven made this tune appear to the US charts four times and it was used for the Original Sound Track of the Warner's Movie named "Billy Jack". The music director of this movie's soundtrack wanted to use the original version by THE ORIGINAL CASTE, but the episode was that The Coven, signed band of The Warner Records, was in haste chosen because of the movie and record company's relationship.
Bruce, Dixie & The ORIGINAL CASTE's recording era/career continued in various forms as a group and solo[Dixie]recordings for about eight years[1968-74]and the final album "Back Home"[issued 1974] was left after their original member's group were dissolved in 1972. Dixie & Bruce continued to tour with various new members until 1980.
Dixie Lee lives in British Columbia, state of Canada. Bruce resides in Sun Valley, Idaho, and keeps his music career alive by playing his inspiring folk music in local concerts, issuing his independent label recordings and also tours with an all new line up of THE ORIGINAL CASTE, circa 2005. In 2000 he discovered singer Cheryl Morrell, which led to reforming The Original Caste along with long time Original Caste bandmate Gary Carlson.
A Japanese Import reissue Cd of the ORIGINAL CASTE's first album, "ONE TIN SOLDIER", is available at www.amazon.com - I hope this finally clears up all the confusion.

When this material originally resurfaced in an earlier Rhino-celebrates-the-'70s program, many rock scribes contorted themselves into revisionist pretzels: this isn't so bad, they argued--none too convincingly. There'll be none of that here: much of the music on this colossal box set is godawful. The world doesn't miss the likes of Sammy ("Chevy Van") Johns and Sammy ("Candy Man") Davis. Or at least it doesn't miss the records they cut during the decade of disaster flicks and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. That said, this elaborate box is something to behold. The lovingly compiled 92-page booklet provides background on the ridiculous (David Soul, C.W. McCall, Carl Douglas) and the sublime (Parliament, James Brown, the Staple Singers), and the music swings on the same pendulum, with Harry Chapin, Bill Withers, and Cat Stevens sitting amid Wayne Newton, The Captain & Tennille, and Meco's jittery electro-take on the Star Wars theme. Seven discs, 160 selections! To paraphrase a popular ad slogan of the era, you won't believe you listened to the whole thing. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

Peace, man............2007-05-31
And now, I find that I'm doing the same thing with this set of CD's! It's freakin' 1979 all over again!
How can you cram so much 70's goodness into this box set? And to get the ORIGINAL songs from the ORIGINAL stars is just groovy. Too many compilations now have the original stars doing remakes of their songs and it just seems pointless to me.
Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), unabashedly my favourite song of ALL TIME, (just ask those that have to endure it EVERY time I karaoke) finds a great spot here in its ORIGINAL glory.
If you're thinking of getting a 70's compilation, STOP THINKING!! BUY THIS ON IMPULSE AND ENJOY A HASTY DECISION FOR ONCE!!
There'll be no time to feel any guilt when you're singing along to all the classics you grew up with.
"Billy, Don't Be A Hero!" "You're No Good" if you don't "Rock The Boat" and "Let Your Love Flow"! "Me and Mrs. Jones" will be "Stuck In The Middle With You" just "Smokin' In The Boys Room" if you don't "Get Down Tonight"!!
But hey, if you think "I'm Not In Love" with this set and you don't buy it?
Well....."Everybody Plays The Fool" "You Sexy Thing"!!
The great, the good, the bad and the plain awful, in one delightful package.......2007-04-15
It is a bit expensive, and some have criticized the inclusion of the Top 40 single versions over the definitive album versions, but hey guys/gals, this is what they played on the radio at the time. Also missing are some of the superstars, but as the booklet says, you probably have lots of those already (e.g., Paul McCartney, Elton John, mid-period Stones, Billy Joel, etc.)
I was hesitant about the cost, but after one full listen through, I'm extremely pleased. Thank you Rhino (and thanks to Amazon, too who listed the delivery time as several weeks but it came within one week).

Amazon.com essential recording
It's hard to think of a more quintessential pre-disco-era supergroup, and this really is the ultimate collection of the Jackson 5's finest. From the super-sweet "I'll Be There" (which went on to become one of the most-covered songs in recent history) to the peppy pop of "I Want You Back," the period's essence is in every single high note. The Afros, the bell-bottoms, Michael pre-identity crisis, it's all there and so much more fun than anything any of the clan has done since. This is a great party album: classics like "ABC," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and "Rockin' Robin" sit alongside more jazz-influenced tracks like a cover of the Isleys' "It's Your Thing," and are guaranteed to keep all feet on the dance floor. --Rebecca WallworkCustomer Reviews:

N'Sync/The Backstreet Boys/98 Degrees took notes ... ran
Dru Hill took notes ... and ran
112 took notes ... and ran
Jodeci took notes ... and ran
Boyz II Men took notes ... and ran
New Edition took notes ... and ran
But the J-5 set the precedent and their music keeps going and going and going!!!
Michael was still Black, the brothers were gettin' along, LaToya's clothes were still on, Janet was makin' us fall in love with her on "Good Times" and the craziness that was Joe and Katherine's relationship was still a well-kept family secret.
In between, you'll get this CD of timeless classics from the Jackson 5 -- "The Ultimate Boy Band ... Period."
"Dancing Machine," "Never Can Say Goodbye Girl (No, No, No; No, No, No)," "Rockin' Robin," "I Wanna Be Where You Are (Oh!)" ... the list LITERALLY goes on and on and on.
And to think as soon as the Jacksons first hit it big, Mainstream America tried to quell their thunder by pushing so-called more "mainstream" (read between the lines) family acts like the Osmonds and the Partridge family (as if?!?!?)
This was just another time and place in life.
This album captures a more pure, innocent time in music.
Highly recommended album!

It doesn't happen all the time, but occasionally kitsch burrows itself into the popular consciousness and stays put because it's timelessly, compellingly good. Such is the case with The Very Best of the Partridge Family, which at long last allows pop aficionados who have closeted their dirty-little-secret obsession with the fictitious TV group to come clean. Never mind the ruffles and dove-wing lapelsheartthrob hang-ups aside, David Cassidy can sing (skip "I Think I Love You" and check his soul chops on the raging "Roller Coaster" or his Elvis-like vocal nuances on "Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque" instead.) And it doesn't hurt that the material he crooned was penned by some of the era's top songwriters. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, for example, lent their graceful imagery to "Looking Through the Eyes of Love," and Gerry Goffin was behind "I'll Meet You Halfway." Add to that the band's layered-harmony-nailing background singers and a stash of sensational session players, and it can't be helped: You get happy. -Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
