5 out of 5 stars No Ball & Chain Draggin' Down This Lady.......2007-05-31

When Janis Joplin electrified the folk/blues scene with her incredibly propelled version of Big Mama Thorton's "Ball & Chain," I really wanted to hear more from the source. Unfortunately it wasn't until recently that I listened to this CD that features "Ball & Chain." I was surprised at the high quality of the entire CD--and also a little surprised how "modern" Willie Mae "Big Mama" sounded on the CD. I don't know, I guess I was expecting more in the line of an anthology, archival performance in the way of Bessie Smith recordings (and I am serious Bessie Smith fan too.)

Willie Mae originated "Hound Dog" that was later such a hit for Elvis. Elvis' version is great, but I prefer the original.

Legendary Muddy Waters accompanies on five tunes.

As for "Ball & Chain," you can really hear the influence the original had on Janis Joplin--and how Janis also made it her own.

This is CD is hardcore blues delivered in Big Mama's light, almost delicate style.

No, there's nothing "almost" about it. Big Mama Thorton's blues phraseology is both strong & unequivocally delicate.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thorton is one of the blues Greats, sharing the galaxy with other blues/jazz devas like Billie Holiday & Etta James.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Traditional Blues .......2007-01-11

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton was much more than the originator of "Hound Dog" - she was one of the greatest Blues singers. She could be fun and sassy, and could also be plaintive and emotional. After Bessie Smith and before Koko Taylor, there was Big Mama Thornton.

BALL `N' CHAIN consists of 16 songs recorded 1965-1968 (tracks 1-8 in 1965; 9-14 in 1966; 15 & 16 in 1968). Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 61:50. Booklet includes an essay by Chris Strachwitz, several black & white photos, and track information (songwriter credits, musician personnel, recording dates). Sound quality is good.

These are re-recordings of songs Thornton had previously recorded, including "Ball N' Chain", a song that was notably recorded by Janis Joplin. Tracks 1-8 feature Buddy Guy on Guitar. Tracks 9-14 recorded with Muddy Waters Blues Band (and also issued on Arhoolie's 2004 release "Big Mama Thornton with the Muddy Waters Blues Band - 1966"). Noteworthy are Thornton's complaints on "Unlucky Girl" about being followed by the FBI everywhere she goes.

This may be the Blues, but it is a joy to listen to. Thornton sings Blues ballads and fun up-tempo songs. I hesitate to call it "country Blues" because it just seems too sophisticated to be called that. Whatever it is, it's beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars How blue can she get?.......2006-11-27

Brilliant!
Big Mama's powerful vocal is accompanied by some really, REALLY, strong musical groups; including Muddy Waters' band on several classical interpretations ("I'm Feeling Alfight", "Sometimes I have a Heartache", "Black Rat"...).
My other favorites on this CD are, probably, "Unlucky girl" and "Little Red Rooster" (with Buddy Guy, Walter Horton and others) and, even more probably, the best of them all, erotically highly charged "School Boy" (with only instrument being the sugestive and even eerie guitar of Fred McDowell)...
Some songs ("Swing it on home"...) unfortunately cross the line of R/B and approach rock 'n' roll, but it is only minor problem on this brilliant CD... Every unce of blues this lady carries is worth hearing!

Great songwriter ("Sweet Little Angel"...) and great interpreter, Big Mama Thornton is one of the best blues musicians I've encountered so far...
Oh yes, what was the name of that movie star hip-shaking white boy who also tried to sing Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog"?

5 out of 5 stars The classic 1960's Arhoolie sessions!.......2004-05-09

Although these are not as powerful as her Peacock recordings of teh 50's, one should not overlook her Arhoolie sides fro mthe mid 60's(to late 60's). Ball b' Chail is a classic, as well as the Gospel tinged Wade In The Water and Sweet Little Angel(covered fro meveryone from BB King to Etta James). This is a powerfu lset of rockin' blues, and a couple of slower ones too ,but for the most part this is great jump blues and the msuic swings, stomps, and jumps, as well as rocks! Even the slower stuff rocks! Big Mama dodn't recrd too much that wasn't worth listening to ,and aside from her Peacock recordingd. these are her msot essential sides, and are a major highlight of a long lustrious career as a blues diva! Also Mama Thornton has influenced everyone from rock singer Janis Joplin to new blues diva Candye Kane. Thornton was a powerful singer, and this cd should not be overlooked, and should be essential to blues fans. Even myself, strictly a fan of rockabilly music, love all of Thornton's work from the 50's and 60s'.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent rockin' blues and rollicking r&b and jump blues.......2004-04-13

This cd features Mig mama Thornton hollerin' her way thru a versitile set of jump blues, slow drags, and rockin' blues. Although if you want to make a 1st purchase of Mama thornton start with Hound Dog-The Peackock Recording, as a 2nd purchase you can't go wrong with these somewhat later sessions. Lot's of fun, rough and roudy blues.

    5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-06-22

It sure is great to hear this band in action again. My only regret is that I didn't know about this cd when it was released. I could have been listening to this cd much earlier.

Anyway this is a very good cd and the guys still sound great even after all these years. And I hope that there is another cd in the works for
Jo Jo Gunne to keep us 'Gunner' fans out here happy.
    Sign me, still a 'Gunner'.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As it Gets.......2007-03-07

I'm not going to waste your time (or mine) with a lengthy review. Suffice to say that the original line up of this fine band got back together and managed to recapture and update the qualities that made them so good in the first place; this record is easily up to the standards of their "classic" 4 original releases. Sadly, though, this one was criminally underpromoted.

(Irrelevant, but I will add one thing thing in response to another review: I had no trouble whatsoever telling who was who in the photos.)

    1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2006-11-07

Time to look up the word "lame" in the dictionary. How sad is this CD? Let me count the ways:

    * The cheap, generic studio sound that manages to be both tinny and bass-heavy at the same time.

    * Basically, they remade their first (and worst) album (it was so bad, I gave my copy away right after I bought it) and added six new "originals."

    * There was, however, one really great song on that album ("Take It Easy" [not the Eagles song]). Now guess what? That's the only one they left out!

    * They've also remade "Before You Get Your Breakfast" (a really great tune from their third album, "Jumpin' the Gunne"). The original version is ten times better.

The new material is more of the same, i.e., everything Jo Jo Gunne detractors love to hate, with none of the charms fans like me (and I may be a minority of one here) find amusing. Yet another sad footnote to the Spirit saga.

THE ONLY FUN: In the booklet, there are side-by-side photos of the band, "then and now." I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out who's who. These guys have aged so much over the years, I can't even tell which one is Jay Ferguson!

5 out of 5 stars Ready Freddy, Rockin' Steady.......2006-09-06

As a fanatic Jo Jo Gunne fan, I approached this album with trepidation. I was afraid they might mess up and tarnish their legacy. Much to my relief, this album is fabulous. Even after thirty years, these guys are as good as ever. Why they aren't more famous is a mystery to me. I couldn't love 'em better.

    4 out of 5 stars Totally Gunne..........2006-04-11

What do you say about an unexpected album by a band that hasn't been heard from in decades? I picked this up as soon as I saw it and was pleasantly surprised. It's a 50/50 mix of new material and old songs redone. The new material is true to form Gunne. Definitely no pandering to current tastes, just some damn fine music that would have fit comfortably on any of their previous albums. This is Jo Jo Gunne as I remember them, with everyone doing what they used to do like they used to do it, only better. Jay Ferguson can still belt out a tune with as much fire and conviction as he ever did, and every band member has only gotten better at playing his instrument. The performances are tight, and the recording quality is excellent.
As for the remakes... well... sometimes it's hard to let go of songs as I know them. That's more a matter of personal taste than any particular fault with what they did on the new versions. For better or worse, they happened to pick at least a few songs that are near and dear to my heart. For me, the successes are Babylon (certainly superior to Ferguson's solo remake), Shake That Fat, Run Run Run, and Barstow Blue Eyes. 99 Days is a tossup; both versions have their strengths. Academy Award and Flying Home, my two favorite songs from their first album if not their entire catalog, are a bit hard to swallow in their new forms. Well done on their own terms I suppose, but far enough from the originals to make me wish they'd left them alone. That's my personal preference of course. It's still a new Jo Jo Gunne album and a very nice surprise after all these years. Hats off to ya, boys! What else are ya hiding?

THis album is the bomb. It has alot of good songs on it. It has that tight Atl crunk sound I love. It just like lil jon except he raps better. This came out when crunk music was just getting started and booty music was fading away. Some of the drum beats are fast on here. That how crunk music started in the early part of 2000.Its slower now. But any ways get the cd is still crunk.

Baby D is one of the premier Georgia crunk rappers. The beats are Off Da Chain just as the title indicates. This is straight get crunk, booty shakin, elbow throwing, party music. You Can't Go Wrong. Eastside Vs. Westside is the classic song here and it is so crunk that it almost always results in a fight or exchange of words and threats. The Battle between Eastside- College Park, East Point all dem and Westside- Stone Mountain, Bankhead and all dem. My Folk has the tightest beat and the bass is unbelievable and the chant is infectious. Other tight songs include Bow His Azz Up, Bounce Dat Ass, Ridin In A Chevy, Back Up. Back Up is crunk to the fullest with a trill beat. Baby D be going off and can definitely get anyone hype along with the rest of the Oomp Camp. Basically if you need some party music or something to bump in the whip then this is surefire guaranteed to get the job done. Classic. Recommended.

This is a great CD, I'd give it 5 stars if only they would have put on more songs by J.D. Short. These two often overlooked bluesmen compliment each other wonderfullly. Maybe it's because they were cousins. Big Joe is forcefull and driving, at times angry to J.D. Short's laid back country blues. Don't expect the intriquite mastery of Robert Johnson, but don't pass this up either.

I love everything about this cd. Easily one of my favorite cds to come out this year. Perfect power pop songs, especially "The Crush" and "Little Tin Toys", which ROCKS!!!! If your going to buy one cd, get this one, you won't be disappointed. This band's going to be huge!

    5 out of 5 stars They Rock.......2000-08-05

Can't say enough about this CD. A great mix of sounds and lyrics that keeps you intrigued the whole time. Amazed at the range of these guys.

5 out of 5 stars The only thing plain about this CD is the cover............2000-04-21

It's what's inside that counts :) The catchy lyrics, the smooth harmonies, the hard to soft guitar riffs, the drummer that can't be shaken, what a package! From the funky feel of "too bad" to the hard licks of "little tin toys", it's that rock sound that will absorb the casual listener, and ignite the serious music enthusiast. As a small recording studio engineer on the side, music is usually not an emotional venue, but this band can light it up! Catch this one so you can say you had the first release from a future multi-platinium producing band ;)))

5 out of 5 stars What's missing from this record?.......2000-04-20

Nothing! When listening to these guys, it hardly matters what your musical preference is; if there's any sound they can't capture, this listener has yet to hear it. Hard to remember they're a 3-piece band, the musicianship is so strong. With current airtime so strangely devoted to the relentless nonsense that passes for music these days, Chain Poets are a breath of fresh air. This CD offers in-your-face rock'n roll, with superb guitar work and smashing percussion, as well as songs that defy classification with their masterful use of keyboards, mellotron and synth. The guys clearly had some serious fun in the studio with this production, and their obvious joy in the creative process shines through on every track. Give it a listen - "Chain Poets" is a treat to be savored.

5 out of 5 stars Strong rock band.......2000-04-12

After hearing the cd, I was so happy to hear some new tunes that I could relate to. Strong hooky riffs with strong, very cool lyrics make an incredible rock band. I totaly recommend getting this cd. Your missing out if you don't.
