I didnt get this group, when they and i were both in our 20s. I was a soul boy, and they seemed british synth pop. I was also a music snob, so there you are. But i did own it on vinyl, a birthday present though it stayed unplayed for many years. when i saw it as a cd combo pack with the communards, i purchased and revised my opinion. How did i miss the purity of the voice, or the soul in this skinny little brit boy. The best singers make you feel the story of the song. Fast or slow, you feel this cd. you feel love. the music is clever, and the electronica seemlessly pairs with mr sommerville (and guests). I think i stayed away because i was a small town boy. But as a big city man now, i can admit, i was wrong here. This is music in the purest sense.

"Why" is one of those rarities: A song that is so visual in its rhythms that you can't help but dream of making its music video. Really hard to sing along with unless you primarily go for falsetto. The cover of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is at least as good as the original, and more hypnotic. And who can't relate to the haunting sadness of "Smalltown Boy"?

"You leave in the morning
With everything you own
In a little black case
Alone on a platform
The wind and the rain
On your sad and lonely face

Mother will never understand
Why you had to leave
For the love that you need
Will never be found at home
The answer you seek
Will never be found at home

Run away turn away run away turn away run away (repeat)

Pushed around and kicked around
Always a lonely boy
You were the one
That they'd talk about around town
As they put you down
And as hard as they would try
They'd hurt to make you cry
But you'd never cry to them
Just to your soul
No you'd never cry to them
Just to your soul "

If the limbic part of your brain hungers for good synth sounds, look no further. This is Mecca.

This album literally saved my life. It made me realise that in my tiny little corner of Smalltown Redneck Georgia there was more to life than Styx, Journey, Trans Ams with T-Tops, and pretending. And no, this isn't a therapy session, it's an album review, so let's get down to it. I heard the single from AGE OF CONSENT ( "WHY" ) on the college radio station in Athens, Georgia (ANOTHER reason I love Athens) and was immediately hooked. It spoke to me on so many levels. It was dance. It was synthetic. And it was queer. And I mean QUEER. "Contempt in your eyes when I turn to kiss his lips" is the opening line. Amazing. Way ahead of it's time. And for me, a revelation. It made me realise I wasn't the only one out there. More importantly it wasn't camp like the Village People and the like, in that it was in your face and unapologetic, and not hiding behind the "clone" stereotypes. These were three incredibly talented British musicians who just happened to be homosexuals and who weren't afraid to write songs about their experiences. "Smalltown Boy" the next US single, with incredible lyrics and vocals by Jimmy Sommerville, was another song dealing with the process of "coming out", moving on and facing who you really are without looking back with regret. And again the music is just GOOD. Hooks galore. Great production courtesy of Mike Thorne. And "Age Of Consent" is no one trick pony. There are covers of torch songs ( "It Ain't Necessarily So" which is better than you think it would be), social commentary ( in the form of "Junk", which slams our throw-away, "I want it now" society ) and several timeless originals that will take your breath away ( "Screaming", my personal favourite from this album -the first song Sommerville wrote with Bronski Beat - and "Need a Man Blues"). The remastered expanded version here adds the full length version of Bronski Beat's last single with Sommerville, a cover of "I Feel Love", a collaboration with Marc Almond of Soft Cell which comes THISCLOSE to eclipsing the original, no small feat in itself, as well as a moving cover of the French ballad "Puit d'Amour." A great album. ( One last thing, to file in the "strange but true" file, I used to play the 12" version of WHY at 33 1/3 instead of 45 RPM at parties and turned it into a totally different song, a good twenty years before the days of mash-ups and radical remixes .) Actually, one more thing ( please bear with me ) - I met Steve Bronski in Atlanta, Georgia around 1990 after they played a benefit concert and he was a total sweetheart !

4 out of 5 stars BRONSKI BEAT AND THE TECHNOPOP.......2004-02-21

AGE OF CONSENT is basical to understand the eightis music and the new excitent movement of technopop-remakers as Felix Da Housecat, Ladytron or Chiks on Speed. Every song on this album sounds different, and that's not a god thing, but there are a really 2 or 3 themes as Smalltown boy or Junk.
Vey interesting for the new generation that discovers oldies.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome stuff.......2004-01-29

Smalltown boy alone gives this album 5 stars. Way ahead of its time. It is a pity they didn't stick around together very long, because Bronski beat was Erasure before Erasure was cool.

I first saw the cover for this one in the movie "Edge of Seventeen" where they played one of the songs also. Since I liked the one they had played in the movie, I bought the CD which got me hooked. I have since purchased 2 more of the CD's and may get more, so to get right down to it, I think this title kicks... I'm not one for Techno or dance music but this group is HOT.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant debut album from Bronski Beat.......1998-09-05

"The Age of Consent" is stunning. Even the critics raved over this when it was released in 1984, and with good reason. There has never been an album that reaches as directly into gay life, with such haunting results.

The album sounds to a certain extent like it was mixed in a wind tunnel. However, instead of being frustrating, the murky sound of some backing tracks add to the ambience. Jimmy Somerville's high-pitched falsetto vocals rise and fall with the rhythm, and his vocal gymnastics give the album its main spark. There is an aching, melancholy note in his singing which allows every track to hold up to repeated listenings.

Side one opens with a great dance song, "Why?" Somerville wails, "Contempt in your eyes / As I turn to kiss his lips / Broken I lie, all my feelings denied / Blood on your fist..." His furious indictment of gay-bashing rises to a crescendo near the end, and finishes with a haunting, fading scream. There is a despair in the final utterance which defies description; it literally has to be heard to be believed. Once it is heard, there is no escaping it.

The side continues with a re-make of the old Gershwin song "It Ain't Necessarily So." The production is at its murkiest here, but this song gives way to "Screaming," with piercing, well-enunciated vocals from Somerville. The final two tracks on side one sound similar in intent, decrying the evils of war in "No More War" and materialism in "Love and Money." Once again, Somerville's vocals shine.

Side two begins with Bronski Beat's biggest hit, the number three U.K. smash "Smalltown Boy." This straight-forward look into the psychological trauma inflicted on gay youths in their schools and communities is biting; its young runaway is an immediately sympathetic figure, and Somerville's propulsive vocals drive the dance beat to new heights. "Heatwave" is a fairly predictable album cut, and "Junk" shows off the vocal versatility of Somerville, as he drops into a mid-range register. "Need a Man Blues" is delivered with theatrical aplomb, and then the album drops another bomb. The band made the decision to cover Donna Summer's synth-disco classic, "I Feel Love." This is be a trick Somerville would return to in his solo career, always recording at least one catchy cover of a disco song on every album, and it works very nicely here, but what makes the track is that it is placed in a medley with an old-time song called "Johnny Remember Me." The result is fascinating, as Somerville returns to a melancholy sound. His pleading for Johnny to remember him and return his love is gorgeously rendered, and the cries of pain at being forgotten are a fitting way to end the album.

All in all, this could never be repeated. Somerville left early in 1985, and has gone on to a long solo career, first with his duo the Communards, then as a solo artist. The other two members of Bronski Beat, Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek, would add vocalist John Jon and attempt to regroup with the album "Truthdare Doubledare." But with the possible exception of "For a Friend" from the Communards' "Red" album, and Somerville's recent "Dare to Love" single, no original Bronski Beat member has ever come up with a song to match the best tracks from "Age of Consent." This is one album every gay man should own, without question. Daring, original, unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars More than "just another disco band".......1998-08-13

Bronski Beat, unfortunately, has come and gone. Yet the music they put together between fifteen and twenty years ago still has significant energy.

The band was never a big "commercial" hit because of the gender bender nature of the members. Singing falsetto is evidently okay for the Four Seasons and others, as long as they are heavily hetero.

The follow-up pieces to this album, including Truthdare/Doubledare have disappeared. (My own CD of this was swiped by a car break-in artist about a year ago.)

The bottom line on Bronski Beat's albums, especially this one: 1. Intense beat 2. Not techno, not disco, not dated 3. For hot, fast music with a beat, this is STILL one of the strongest albums EVER made.

There are some "fillers" on this C.D. but there are also some classics. Smalltown Boy and Why are two particulaly good examples of this type of early synth pop. A gay band, which is easily realised by listening to the lyrics, which was one of the pioneers of the gay scene of early 80s England. Truly a milestome of its time.
