Nothing prepared fans for quite such a return to form from Paul Weller. The mood was autobiographical, most notably on "Has My Fire Really Gone Out" and on the title track--both of which dealt with the writer's block that plagued Weller after the Style Council. And yet Wild Wood is anything but morose. Flutes and sun-dazed guitars create pastoral moods. "Shadow of the Sun" takes stock of youthful idealism and finds wisdom of years, and "Sunflower" is a superlative burst of psychedelic power pop. But it's the instrumental passages and interconnecting refrains that truly reveal their author's attention to detail and give Wild Wood an edge over the rest of his solo material. --Peter Paphides

Album Description

Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER

4 out of 5 stars Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14

Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09

John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19

If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.

Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter and Cambridge Singers.......2007-01-18

This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

5 out of 5 stars Pure class!!!!.......2004-01-28

Very simple, this is one of the best albums ever recorded and shows the full range of weller's vocals that surpasses anything. I never get tired of it as it always manages to take me away from wherever I am and in my book is faultless.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, The Fire HAS Gone Out.......2003-12-01

All sane people agree that The Jam was huge on so many levels. I don't care what anyone else says, The Style Council was Weller's creative apex (most people don't appreciate truly good food either). Wildwood is perhaps the best of Weller's solo material but c'mon, it's a shell of his former brilliance. So much of it is generic and forgettable. I saw him live in LA this summer and it was fine, but the creative well of new material is dry.

5 out of 5 stars The "ModFather" Strikes Gold!.......2003-06-20

Well, let me start by saying that this is going to be a very biased review, considering the fact that I believe Paul Weller to be one of the coolest individuals to ever live. And I adore most of his music (the reason I didn't say "all" can be summed up in two words: Style Council). But he really launched into the stratosphere with this album. I can honestly find no fault with this wonderful CD. It's all there. If you want to rock out, listen to "Sunflower" or "Fifth Season". If you want to relax, try "All The Pictures on the Wall" or "Moon on Your Pyjamas". And if you're an acoustic fan, "Foot of the Mountain" is your song. Needless to say there's a lot more, but the only way you can find out is to pick up a copy of your own. Do so immediately!!

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Trad-Rock Classic.......2002-07-16

"Wild Wood" is both Paul Weller's best recording and the best contemporary take on classic British rock. Elements of Traffic, Small Faces, Beatles, and Stones are all evident and combined to perfection. In short, if you think they stopped making great albums around 1972, pick up this disc!

5 out of 5 stars Truly classic and organic.........2002-01-11

If I had to recomend a top 10 albums to have this just might make it. 'Wild Wood' truly got me through. It was 1 of those albums I played over and over exclusivly for several months. Paul job VERY WELL DONE!

Music critics love to say that this symphony resembles Brahms's Second, which in some ways it does. What they neglect to point out, however, is that Dvorák wrote five symphonies before Brahms wrote one, so it's just as fair to say that the reason it resembles Brahms is because Brahms resembles Dvorák! It's certainly as fine as anything by Brahms, and for those who haven't heard it yet, this performance will win it many new friends. This version of the The Wood Dove, the greatest of Dvorák's late symphonic poems, is also stunning. A lovely disc. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Dvorák's 6th Symphony: A Reminder of its Beauty.......2006-12-09

Antonin Dvorák works are staples in the orchestral repertoire and his admirers are legion. Though his 8th and 9th symphonies appear regularly on all major orchestra programs, the 6th is relatively unknown. Strange, as this symphony is the first of Dvorák's 'mature' works. It is beautifully if fitfully constructed and savors all of the factors that make Dvorák unique - driving rhythms, bohemian folksongs and dances, languorous melodies, and frenetic presto movements. It calls for an orchestra of great skill to pull it off and a conductor sensitive to all of the innuendoes of Dvorák's writing to make it the convincing work it most assuredly is.

On this fine recording Jirí Belohlávek (currently the conductor of the BBC symphony) leads his Orchestr Ceská Filharmonie in a brisk and bright performance. Jirí Belohlávek conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a performance that featured this symphony and with that powerful ensemble and brilliant acoustic of the Disney Hall created a magic the audience will not soon forget. Belohlávek is an under-appreciated conductor able to draw magic from ensembles. And this recording, including the very popular and inordinately beautiful tone poem 'The Wood Dove' deserves more attention than it has received. A perfect introduction to a neglected Dvorák masterpiece. Grady Harp, December 06

4 out of 5 stars A great piece to follow the 9th........1999-12-31

If you're new to classical music, you've probably already heard Dvorak's 9th "New World" Symphony. If you want to expand your Dvorak collection, the 6th Symphony is a good choice. It shares many lyrical traits of the 9th. The recording itself is fine and makes a great addition to any classical library.

5 out of 5 stars "Mr. Choral Christmas's Finest".......2002-11-21

Anyone who truly loves the choral and carol traditions of Christmas cannot miss Mr. Rutter's work. He is truly possessed of extraordinary talent and this fine recording puts it on proper display. The collection here houses the best of Mr. Rutter's original/edited works for the Christmas season, and one can sense the composer's affinity for the spirit of the holidays of which he has written so prolifically and well.

5 out of 5 stars At the Top of My Christmas Playing List!.......2001-12-07

This is just an outstanding collection of choral, Christian selections. The majority are composed by Rutter, who it turns out was led into this field for which he is so well known and loved when in school, he was motivated by a fellow student who was composing a Christimas carol to do the same. Thanks be to God for that motivation!

Rutter's work simply in this humble reviewer has no other contemporary peer. He is reverent, fresh and excellent theology to boot! This collection has his best, including my favorites: "Shepherd's Pipe Carol, What Sweeter Music, The very best time of year, Angels' Carol."

To his compositions, added is Kirkpatrick's "Away In a Manger" and of course, Gruber's "Silent Night", both skillfully arranged and performed. Bonus selections of traditional pieces such as "I Wonder as I wonder."

The City of London Sinfonia conducted by Stephen Layton provides the orchestra background marvelously for Polyphany, the outstanding choir on this work.

You will be delighted to add this CD to your collection, and it will rise in most collections to near the top.

2 out of 5 stars Will anyone comment on Sound Quality please?.......2006-12-07

While I loved the performance, I don't think I can recommend this particular recording because of the sound quality...has anyone else noticed this problem?

5 out of 5 stars Harnoncourt's best composer after Bruckner.......2006-01-16

Altough he gained his early reputation with Bach, Harnoncourt has an affinity with Bruckner, Schumann, and Dvorak. He says in the program notes that he feels very emotional about Dvorak (hard to believe from the most scowling sotne face since Fritz Reiner), but where Harnoncourt's Schumann is rhapsodic and abandoned, his aproach to Dvorak is refined, disciplined, and soft-spoken. First and foremost he doesn't want the Dvork Seventh to sound routine, folksy, or simple-minded.

In that regard he succeeds beyond expectation. This is a performance so carefuly balanced and scrupulous that it verges on the self-contained. There isn't a trace of unbuttoned Czech boisterousness. It's rare for a disciplined performance to sound fresh, but Harnoncourt triumphs by his uncanny instinct for Dvorak's melodic line. The Royal Concertgebouw plays like flowing golden syrup, and Teldec has captured them in natural, open sound.

For sheer energy this Seventh can't match Szell or Kubelik, but it doesn't try to. On its own terms it's one of the msot exceptional Dvorak recodings I've ever heard. The filler is The Wild Dove, one of Dvorak's four great tone poems, here played just as well as the symphony. The sympony is form a live concert in 1998, the tone poem from the studio in 1997.

5 out of 5 stars Freshness and spontaneity.......2004-12-14

This recording offers thanks to Harnoncourt and the Concertgebouw a playing of great clarity and warmth. The woodwinds are forwardly balanced and the brass is imposing but never overbearing.
Harnoncourt's historically informed performance concerns maintaining transparency through the observance of dynamics and the balances between the instrumental sections. The tempi are for my taste ideal.
The performances of both pieces, especially the one of the "Wood Dove", are exciting and atmospheric. I love it !!!

4 out of 5 stars A fresh look at much played works.......2001-07-27

First let me say Harnoncourt's fresh outlooks on Dvorak's final three symphonies with the Concertgebouw are consistently a revelation and very welcome releases. The Seventh, like all three symphonies, was recorded live in Amsterdam in a warm acoustic. Of the many versions of this symphony I own, I don't believe I've heard the first movement performed so well. There seems to be just the right balance between the brass and strings and the building tension is palpable. Also, similar to Harnoncourt's Beethoven recordings, the details and the textures are brought out vividly and so you are allowed to hear things perhaps you haven't noticed before. The moment of climax in the first movement really sounds like a climax. I have one reservation about Harnoncourt's Dvorak and I admit it is probably a very personal preference. He insists on a "period-informed" method of bowing on the strings, perhaps a holdover from his days conducting Bach. What I mean by this is the strings are told to use very little, if any, vibrato in their playing. For me I notice this brings a thin sort of detached sound from the violins which may be appropriate in Bach or Mozart, but is this appropriate for Dvorak's more romantic approach? I'm sure Mr. Harnoncourt knows more about this than I, but I simply prefer a more full string sound as in the Szell, Kertesz, Kubelik, and Dohnanyi versions of the Seventh. The place I notice this the most is in the second theme of the Finale of the Seventh where I am expecting to hear the violins singing out but here they seem somehow thin and distant. I don't want to make too much of this issue because on the whole these are wonderful performances (the brass of the Concertgebouw are perhaps the best on record). Just my opinion. The liner notes are excellent as they include informative interviews with Harnoncourt regarding his views of Dvorak and his music.

Eliahu Inbal is a chronically underrated conductor. He has made many fine recordings of music by Mahler, Strauss, Schumann, Scriabin, Bruckner, and many other composers, but because he has tended to jump from label to label, he doesn't get the promotional consideration that he deserves. These Dvorák performances are all very fine--warmly sympathetic, well played, and attractively recorded. At mid-price, they are fully competitive with the best available elsewhere, so you may very well want to give them a shot. --David Hurwitz
