Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2007-05-14

Excellent CD record... a taste of old-timey folk with a country underlining. very well done. no bells and whistles... just good music

5 out of 5 stars Oh, Langhorne!.......2007-03-13

His songwriting is just as impressive as his performance . . . Langhorne is SUCH a good time!

5 out of 5 stars Pick this up!.......2006-10-16

I picked this up based on the fact that it had fun album art and and the tag said foot stamping love songs, this tag is in fact true. This is a up beat collection of love songs and ditties. I really enjoyed the album for its witty light hearted lyrics and fantastic untamed tunes. While lite the musicianship is excelent. Langhorne Slim's voice is enchanting and the tinny quality to the recording really adds to the gritty feel of the album. Overall, this is just a really enjoyable album for listening to by yourself, to play in the background of a party or to dance madly to on the street.

4 out of 5 stars Getting there.......2006-01-16

This is a pretty good album. Slim's musicianship is excellent and his voice is endearing, but there's a certain self-consciousness that mars this album. He's either trying a bit too hard or leaving himself some irony to fall back on.

4 out of 5 stars A very good country/rock album - chances are you'll like it, though the singer *might* turn you off - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-13

I'll be honest - I don't really know how to categorize Langhorne Slim's "When the Sun's Gone Down". It sounds like a country album, but then it also sounds like a rock album. Langhorne himself has a country-inspired voice, and he plays the banjo in basically every song, but, well...I guess you'll just see. Every song here is good, and there are even a couple great ones (see "The Electric Love Letter"), but I would argue that Langhorne's voice *might* turn a couple people off. It's not bad, but it's strange. Those with an open mind, however, will probably look past it. The lyrics are actually pretty interesting and easy-to-hear on the album - I'm pretty confident that you'll listen to them and maybe even like some. Musically, like I said before, it sounds like a country-influenced indie rock album, and it's produced pretty well. He basically uses standard instruments except that he replaces the guitar with his banjo (which he plays well). Basically, I think that those with an open mind and those who can stand a country twist in their rock music will like this album a lot! Highly recommended!

the rest is good, too

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for........2005-06-18

This is OK. I much prefer Inquisition Symphony Metallica (Tribute) by Apocalyptica. I preferred the four cellos of Apocalyptica to the over use of the violin in the String Quartet Tribute. In my opinion this album would have been much better if they had brought the violin down an octave or two. As it is, the violin sounds too whiney. It's not that I do not like violins, I love Vanessa Mae and Hilary Hahn's work, it is just that this album is almost painful to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A great tribute for easy listening..........2005-03-10

This is quite an amazing tribute to 3 Doors Down if you're looking for a relaxing version of American Rock & Roll. It didn't blow me away, but I did find it surprisingly good. Very good. Just don't expect to be rockin' to this, because, well, it's a string tribute, meaning violins, cellos, ect... It's meant to be soothing and relaxing.

I'm quite a big fan of both 3 Doors Down and the String Quartet Tributes, and I have to say that this is one of the finest tributes they have done. The tribtes are pretty much on que with the original songs, so you'll pretty much be able to distinguish which songs are which from the beginning. You might even want to sing to it.

I'm not going to do a song by song review, because they're all great. Some are better than others, but it's a great tribute overall. My favorite songs, though, are "Kryptonite", "Loser", and "Here Without You." I think those are the most well done songs on the album. I must note, though, that it's pretty much necessary to know the songs beforehand. Otherwise, you really won't be able to fully appreciate this tribute, and the songs will probably get repetitive. When you listen to the tribute, you'll pretty much be thinking about the original songs and putting them together in your mind.

I suggest this tribute to any 3 Doors Down fan, as I'm sure they'd appreciate it as much as I did.

This cd sounds awesome. It takes a little while to tell which song they are playing, but when you recognize it you just start singing along with it. My favorite way to listen to this cd is playing it simultaneously with "The Better Life" or "Away from the Sun."
