The rawest '50s rock retains an irresistible pop culture gravity: indeed, the farther one moves away from it in time, the more compelling--and often intoxicatingly alien--it can seem. Produced with fervent devotion by Rhino roots-rock veteran James Austin and featuring a detailed, track-by-track annotation by rockabilly guru Colin Escott, the 101 tracks on these four discs (fully a third of them making their American CD debut) reinforce that notion at every turn. The oft-dizzy, lust-crazed music here argues that the set's "punk" appellation is but marketing-driven redundancy, even as the range of its rockabilly riches gratifyingly defies the attempts of the set's contributing pundits and musicians (including James Burton, the legendary axeman on many of the tracks, as well as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Rev. Horton Heat, and The Blasters' Dave Alvin) to define the genre.

The set shrewdly uses expected contributions from Elvis, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Link Wray, Jerry Lee, the Burnette brothers, and Gene Vincent as but familiar anchor points for a journey that bounces from coast to coast (and the UK, courtesy of Johnny Kidd's great "Shakin' All Over"), fueled by a high-octane brew of folk, country, and R&B on its ever-manic, guitar-driven thrill ride. Underappreciated pioneers like Bob Luman and Wanda Jackson are showcased along the way, as are early efforts by eventual stars in other genres (including Buck "Corky Jones" Owens, George "Thumper" Jones, and Canadian Ronnie Hawkins, later to become the Band). But it's the loopy, reverb and echo-drenched side of one-hit (and no-hit) wonders like Freddie and the Hitchikers' theremin-crazed "Sinners," sex romps like the Caraways' "Ballin' Keen," and John & Jackie's downright heated "Little Girl"--not to mention a virtual parking lot full of Cadillac tributes from Vince Taylor, Sonny Fisher, Larry Dowd, and Joyce Green--that are the true treasures of the set's pop archaeology. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Primer & Introductory Lesson Into The World Of Primitive 1950's Rock & Roll.......2007-07-21

Here it is kids, the ROCKIN' BONES: 1950's PUNK & ROCKABILLY box set from Rhino, the perfect primer, audio handbook and introductory lesson into the dark and dangerous back alleys of primitive 1950's rock & roll. "Rockin' Bones" is that glorious monophonic soundtrack for an inner city gang war, a high school parking lot rumble or maybe even an occasional back road juke-joint knife fight. Contained in the clever JD (juvenile delinquent) paperback sleeve packaging are one hundred and one (101!) vintage fallout tracks from that primeval atomic fusion of raw rhythm n' blues and electrified country; the real mushroom cloud that birthed modern rock. Now, the term "punk" in the title might be more of a marketing gimmick, meant to garner some of today's modern youth's limited attention, but it does go far in relating the anger, intense personal energy and effort-overcoming-inexperience that was a hallmark of both the 70's punk rock movement and the 50's rockabilly music explosion. The earliest track, ELVIS PRESLEY's single "Baby, Let's Play House" (1955) is bracketed on the other end by RONNIE HAWKINS & THE HAWKS' Bo Diddley romp, "Who Do You Love" (1963), so we have a nice 8 year overview contained in this package.

This collection is very similar to Rhino's 1999 box set "Loud, Fast and Out Of Control," and in fact, 15 songs are repeated here. But where LF&OOC was primarily a rock & roll overview of the mid-to-late 1950's pop music scene, ROCKIN' BONES focuses a bit closer and more deeply on those unsung heroes and obscure innovators who never were able to crack the Billboard Top 40. Thankfully, many talented guitar totin' teens and sex-starved singers had access to early recording technology and were able to commit to quarter inch electronic tape their own local response to Elvis Presley's rise to nationwide infamy. Many of these songs were too crude, others a tad unpolished and most a bit too "rural" for regular radio airplay. Another hurdle facing these would-be stars was that most of them lacked the necessary `do-re-mi' to promote, push and publicize their songs on a nationwide level. But there was always enough luck out there for hundreds (thousands?) of American teens to want to give rock n' roll a shot.

Where to begin? Sure, there are a few obvious cuts here like LINK WRAY's "Rumble," CARL PERKINS "Blue Suede Shoes," EDDIE COCHRAN's "Summertime Blues" and BILLY LEE RILEY's "Flyin' Saucers Rock `N' Roll", but it's not like you're going to hear these on your local "oldies" station anymore, are you? ROCKIN' BONES also contains some mind bogglin' obscure-o-billy gems like FREDDIE & THE HITCH HIKERS "Sinners" (complete with eerie "Scooby-Doo" Theremin effects), RONNIE PEARSON's "Hot Shot" and CORKY (a.k.a "BUCK OWENS"!) JONES frantic alcoholic anthem "Rhythm And Booze". I counted a total of 4.5 female orgasms contained in JOHN & JACKIE's 2 minute & 12 second version of GENE MALTAIS' "Little Girl" (that John must be one hell of a lover!). Deserving artists like RONNIE DAWSON, GENE VINCENT and BOB LUMAN are represented, but it's extremely cool to see/hear rockin' gems from still performing rockabilly legends ART ADAMS ("Dancing Doll" & "Rock Crazy Baby"), PAT CUPP ("Long Gone Daddy"), WANDA JACKSON ("Fujiyama Mama") and GENE SUMMERS ("School Of Rock `N Roll"). A real cool audio bonus are the dozen or so "movie trailer" snippets from classic exploitation movies of the era, interspersed throughout the set -you might even want to peek out from the backseat and see what's playing on the drive-in screen! The pace of this box set never really drags and the cuts are all choice. You're guaranteed to find an old favorite and an undiscovered treasure on each disc.

One of the big reasons I'm so hot on this reissue package is that it's an American born project. So many of the better quality reissue series and more enjoyable 1950's rockabilly compilations of the past 20 years have come from across the Atlantic where classic 1950's style, culture and music never seemed to go out of style or become a greasy joke. Bear Family, Ace Records and a host of other fine labels have kept the rockabilly flame alive for many years, but it's rare that a U.S. company would take the time and effort to put together such a deluxe package of classic rockabilly essentials. You get four (4) long-playing CDs with 25 tracks per, (26 on CD #4!) and a slick paperback book with essays from producer James Austin and modern day rockabilly "guitar god" Deke Dickerson. You also get amazing track-by-track anecdotes from noted music historian and author Colin Escott. I'll be the first rockabilly cat to admit that "looks" always count for something and this box set does look great! The outer sleeve has built-in creases, dings and spine rolls -it looks like it was already crammed into your Levis back pocket a few times! The sound is fantastic. All of the tracks presented here are properly remastered onto CD for the first time -thanks to Dave Schultz & Bill Inglot at DIGIPREP. The wonderful thing about rockabilly music is that it always sounds great - whether it's coming through a cheap transistor radio in 1956 or a custom designed stereo system in 2006. ROCKIN' BONES is highly recommended, even if you already own the original 45 rpm records or hundreds of reissue comps. Give this to that friend or roommate who can't seem to understand what this whole "rockabilly" music & kustom kulture scene is all about -they'll finally get it.

5 out of 5 stars Its a Rockabilly Riot!.......2007-06-16

I just picked this box set up the other day; I'd just gotten paid and this will be the last 'big purchase' that I allow myself for quiet some time to come.
It was completly worth it! The piss and vinegar drips off these songs in buckets, leaving one to wonder at the lameness of much of modern day Rock. The only thing that was missing was a loud cadalliac to drive in while listening to the music; but thats completely my own problem and has nothing to do with the box.
Check out the Wanda Jackson song on disc 4, its great; you also have to love "Graveyard Rockin" on Disk 1. Those are just two gems in this amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly Heaven!.......2007-06-07

This boxed set is a must! And it's definitely worth the price. Every song is incredible. Much of the material is obscure to people who are not familiar with rockabilly music. This is why it would make a perfect gift for someone who likes this genre, but who doesn't have much of a collection. I will say that if one has a large rockabilly collection already, there might be some overlapping of songs between what's on this set and other CD's. I will also say that this is a wonderful introduction to this form of music. And also the booklet included inside gives very entertaining information.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly At Its Best.......2007-05-29

Every song on this four CD set is excellent. I enjoy listening to all four CDs. The CD set comes with a book with information about every song and artist and lots of photos. This was a great suprise when I opened the package. Just great music for Rockabilly Fans!

5 out of 5 stars Ask Rush if they write "filler" songs..........2007-07-14

A couple of earlier reviews state this LP is loaded with "filler material". I wonder what Al, Ged, & Neil would say to that.
For a band that prides itself on honesty and integrity, my guess is that Roll The Bones is nothing more than Rush's reflection of the times - musically and emotionally speaking.
I'll admit my favorite Rush LP is Moving Pictures, but I love a wide range of musical styles - and Rush have made some great music since 1981. I will also admit that not every song on this disc has moved me. "Face Up" and "Heresy" are the weak points for me. Favorites are Dreamline, Bravado, Where's My Thing, and Ghost Of A Chance.
The great instrumental, "Where's My Thing" was Grammy nominated for Best Rock Instrumental - but lost to "Cliffs Of Dover" by Eric Johnson.

Roll The Bones lives up to its name. Rush took some chances...missed the bullseye on a couple tracks...but still made a great record. Add this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome .......2007-05-17

While I'll grant that this effort by Rush doesn't sound a lot like the 70's stuff, and is even different than the 80's stuff, this is a fantastic record. I really liked Hold Your Fire, Grace Under Pressure and Presto. This one is better than all of them. Call me crazy, but this one is in the top 3 or 4 all time for Rush records. In my opinion, this is their best work since Moving Pictures. Don't get me wrong, Signals, G/P, Presto, etc. are good, as is HYF and even Counterparts. If you liked Rush in the 80's or 90's you will love this cd, guaranteed. This is their best effor since Moving Pictures and up to now (I haven't heard Snakes and Arrows yet). Most of it just plain rocks, and the song "Bravado" is a great look into winning at all costs, a song that resonates in my mind through the years.

4 out of 5 stars great...except for one song.......2007-03-28

Before I anger any diehard Rush fans, let me first say that I have joined your ranks. I, too, am a diehard Rush fan, and have recently acquired the entire Rush album catalog, including the live stuff. I like this album a great deal, with my favorite tracks being Dreamline, Bravado (really like this one) and Where's My Thing? The only exception to my completely liking this album is the title track. That rap piece in the middle of the song totally and absolutely sucks so hard, it could peel paint off your house. Thirty years is a little too long for a bunch of white guys from Canada to try to incorporate the horrific, mind-numbing noise that is rap into their music. This song is painful to listen to, and it's all I can do not to skip this song, which I refrain from doing out or respect for this band's otherwise brilliant catalog. I sincerely feel that rap music has contributed a great deal to the advancing idiocy of this country, and Rush's contribution here is just another log on the fire. Could we maybe travel back in time and just completely erase this song from the catalog of a supremely talented band and pretend it never existed? Please?

4 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll the Bones Rush style.......2007-03-27

Rush's first album of the 90's is similar to 1989's Presto and just as good. "Dreamline," the album's first track, is one of the best songs the group has ever written as it ties magic and mysticism with the subject of youthful minds wishing to stay young forever, plus it has a catchy intro, great hooks, and a solid guitar jam in the middle. All of the songs on this release have strength and will leave you with something to think about. Musically, the band mix the keyboard and synth sound with driving guitars, and continue their technique of showing how they can still evolve by adding a rap bit to the title track, and they pull it off with hipness and style. Some complained that the band didn't do anything outstanding with this release. Maybe that's true or maybe Rush were preparing the way for 1993's Counterparts, one of the best albums of their career, but they also didn't do anything ordinary either.

3 out of 5 stars Filler-Filled.......2007-01-05

Even though the album helped Rush get back to Guitar Rock, and regardless of the fact that there were much needed "hits" on this record, it still stands alongside RUSH and TEST FOR ECHO as the worst Rush records. The songs Dreamline and Bravado are amazing, not to mention perfect. Roll the Bones and Ghost of a Chance are "OK", but everything else is total filler. There are some brutally dated moments here, moments which are debatably worse than any of the skinny ties and pink loafers of the Power Windows period. I'm looking at you, White-Boy Rap.

Look, Rush is one of the best bands of all time, and pretty much every album is fabulous, but this one is slightly less good than PRESTO (while keeping it's bad, thin production), and doesn't come close to the heights they would scale next with COUNTERPARTS, their best 90's effort.

Get this album last, or almost last.

THE ULTIMATE ISLAND ROCK BAND!!!!!Their debut recording on indie label LAZY BONES fuses hard rock with an "island vibe" to perfection. Check out "TRADITION" and "IF YOU WANY IT YOU"LL GET IT". LIQ keeps it interesting by mixing the brew with electronic/rock instrumentals "MY MOTHER WAS A SUN WORSHIPPER" and "DEALING WITH CHAR SIU". Overall a great first effort. But to really appreciate the LIQ ENERGY check out their latest release "GREEN" also available on LAZY BONES RECORDINGS. In my experience LIQ is best experienced live...check 'em out!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A NEW VESSEL FOR HAWAIIAN TRADITION.......2004-06-12

It can be taken with some skepticism, a band that tells the legendary story of the Islands through riffs reminiscent of Finger Eleven, Dishwalla, and all genre's in between. The heavy tracks "If you want it you'll get it" and "Tradition" are somehow beautifully balanced by the melodic "Find My Way" and "Aubrey". The tracks fill a niche that was once occupied by the infamous IZ ("of the islands"), but now can appeal to a more suburban-rock audience.

Rush's return to progressive hard rock continued with Roll the Bones, though there's still a bit of synth work (notably on the title track). The music flows like a well-oiled machine, and with Rush, that's an asset, particularly when the material is this good. The songs are mostly up-tempo, with the intellectually oriented themes and musical structure that Rush is famous for. Especially memorable are "Dreamline," "Face Up," "Big Wheel," and "Neurotica," but everything here is good. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some gold, lots of coal........2006-02-24

As with so many of Rush's later albums, this has a few songs I'm nuts about and many I just can't seem to really like no matter how many times I try. Which is fine. Part of Rush's charm is that the keep making music in general for us, their fans, but the songs themselves are largely self-indulgence. I wouldn't have it any other way. Do what they want to do, and if I like it, great. If I don't, I can skip to tracks I do like.

For me, the outstanding tracks on this album are Dreamline, Where's My Thing, and Ghost of a Chance.

As a bassist, I really like the simplicity and power of Dreamline's bass line. Anyone can play it. But only Geddy can write it. And lyrically, though all of their songs are open to interpretation based on who the listener is, this is a favorite of mine lyrically.

Where's My Thing? Well, I'm always ecstatic to hear another instrumentalist from the gang.

If any song replaces Dreamline as the centerpiece on this album, for me it's Ghost of a Chance. You rarely hear this band do love songs, but keep in mind these are married daddies. Ghost of a Chance is a very poignant song without getting too schmaltzy. Just right.

Rush wouldn't give the masses the time of day when it comes to doing what they do. They write what they want to write with zero regard for potential commercial success, and they're first and foremost a touring band; not a studio band.

I've introduced this group to many people and one result is very consistent. If a person isn't both a musician and intelligent enough to appreciate the thought-provoking lyrics, they typically don't care for this band. But I've yet to met ANY kind of musician who wasn't completely wowed by this band.

If you're a guitarist, bass player, drummer, or really any kind of musician at all, grab just about any Rush album (Signals would be the exception to me), listen to it once, and you probably won't care for it much. Most Rush albums tend to grab you on the 3rd or 4th listen, then you're hooked. Any musician is immediatley wowed by the incredible musicianship of each and every one of the players. They're all tops on their respective instruments.

And though I prefer Geddy's shrill pre-Moving pictures vocals, his later vocals have incredible beauty to them, so even vocalists can appreciate this group.

This likely wouldn't be the first album I'd recommend to someone as their first dose of Rush. Moving Pictures is a reliable one one to make converts, and for those into much heavier stuff, I find it hard to beat Caress of Steel, and those who like their music more mature yet still edgy, I'd go with Hold Your Fire or especially Presto.

2 out of 5 stars A failed attempt at funk; one of Rush's worst.......2006-02-09

The 90s didn't hold a lot for Rush, except for the hard-rocking "Counterparts" album. Their other 90s albums all had some faults - Presto (actually released in late 89), Roll the Bones, and Test For Echo.

"Presto" contained some great songwriting, but Rupert Hine's "white, clean, and neat" English production took the hard edge off the songs; the finished product comes across as too "polite" if you will, almost sterile sounding. "Test For Echo" likewise contained some well-written lyrics, but the music thrashes forward in a way that negates the individual performances of the instrumentalists; for example, you can't pick out the individual notes of the bassline with all the sturm-and-drang of the three insrtuments pounding forward together. (See "Time and Motion" for the best example of what I mean.)

But the worst of Rush's 90s output has to be "Roll the Bones." More than half of the songs on this CD are what music fans would call "filler" - songs that take up space and bring the CD's total running time to an acceptable length, but hold little (or no) value. Sure, "Dreamline" is one of Rush's very best songs, and the instrumental "Where's My Thing" is superb, but what else is there on this disc? Not much. The other tunes are flat and/or uninspiring.

Two other problems with this album:
1. The theme of the album gets old very quickly. How many different ways can you say "life is like a game of chance"? Let's see: there's roulette ("The Big Wheel"), cards ("Face Up"), craps ("Roll the Bones"),... and the message of these songs all pretty much say the same thing.
2. Overall, the music on the album is an attempt by the band to add Funk (and even Rap) to their arsenal of sounds. An attempt that fails.

At least "Dreamline" is inspriing and exceptional. And thank Ged for the "Counterparts" album; without it, Rush would've really bombed in the 90s. C-minus.

3 out of 5 stars another decent rush release.......2005-07-24

this album is a decent album, though i never was in love with their more recent albums, like counterparts, roll the bones, vapor trails, their decent, but not great.

5 out of 5 stars worthwhile 90's Rush cd, accessible.......2005-03-10

It isn't their best, but most of it is very strong work, especially the first 3 songs. The opening song "dreamline" has come to be known as one of their best; it was strong enough to be the opener on their Different Stages Live. It is a realization of the aseptic visions that were heard on Presto, and the release of this album marked Rush's second Grammy nomination for best intrumental song in "where's my thing: Part 4, gangster of boats trilogy." This cd is probably their most successful effort since Moving Pictures, though Power Windows, Counterparts, and Test For Echo could give it a run for its money. If you like Test For Echo there is no guarentee that you will like this, but if you don't like this cd, I can't understand what's wrong with you. It is their most easily accessible, with the fewest filler tracks compared to most of their other albums. It might be a good one to get after you check out Moving Pictures, their most lauded success.

4 out of 5 stars Rush enters the 90s.......2005-01-13

The same year that Nerdvana and Pearl Sham rose to prominence was when Rush put out its fourteenth studio album, 'Roll the Bones'. The lyrical theme of this record seems to be kismet and taking chances in life. Musically, I feel that the album is an extension of Presto, yet not quite as good. The CD starts off with a 1-2-3 punch in "Dreamline", the U2-esque "Bravado", and the notorious title track (I actually enjoy the rap section in the middle!!). Unfortunately, there do exist a couple fillers, thus I can't hand out the full five stars. Another problem with the original issue of this album is that the production is flat--the remaster corrects this, luckily.

THE REPORT CARD:

Dreamline: A (one of the best songs of the 90s)
Bravado: A (I don't like U2, yet for some reason I like songs that are influenced by them)
Roll the Bones: A (just a great song)
Face Up: C+ (uh oh, filler #1)
Where's My Thing: A (yay! an instrumental)
The Big Wheel: A- (some don't like it, but I do)
Heresy: B (solid, if simple song)
Ghost of a Chance: A (one of my favorites from this album)
Neurotica: C (filler #2; lyrics are silly)
You Bet Your Life: B+ (a very underrated track)

3 out of 5 stars better live.......2005-03-24

theses guys are great live seen um with tesla but had never heard of them before, wow unreal they came very close to stealing the show, but the cds do not come close to the live sound and the best song live is not on there cds. rollin i think it was. i cant wait for the next cd i check in to see if its out. they kinda sound like tesla but more like a band called cry of love. i say buy there cds and if you get a chance to see um live lucky you.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2001-10-11

Like the other reviews i caught them a year ago as an opening act for King's X. All i can do is ditto most of what was already said. Blues based southern rock with great hooks and a near perfect lead vocalist. A very tight band that is extremely unpretentious. i was so impressed i went to a show a week later and brought several friends. We are all fans of King's X and were once again impressed with them but everyone was shocked at this unknown opening act. I couldn't even find their CD in any local stores. All these reviews have forecast that they will be stars. It hasn't happened and it's a shame. This band deserves it like no other i've heard in years. It would be sad if they struggled in relative obscurity as King's X has done. If you are a lover of music give this a try, you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Saw them live....bought the CD....am awaiting next release.......2001-04-11

Saw them open for KX at Slim's in SF (The show with Ty Tabor in a cervical collar), and was very impressed. Sounds like the good songs from Tesla with more substance in the lyrics, some really solid musicianship, and a lot of energy. I love this album, and will definitely buy the next one. "Wings" is extremely cool.

5 out of 5 stars Texas rock.......2001-03-28

I got the album 6 months ago and constantly listened to it. They opened for Tesla when I saw them in Houston and they put 100% in to they're awesome show. I have never seen a crowd that where the majority had never heard the music before just totally rocked out with these guys. Sound is fresh with Mr. Big type singer. This band should be worldwide.

4 out of 5 stars Ditty, Wings & Dashboard Mary.......2001-01-03

I read that Texas based King's X had something to do with this band. Thank you King's X. Podunk can rock. They have a great pop crunch sound with almost infectious grooves (as my Canadian buddy Chris says). I can't quite put my finger on who these guys "sound" like - they have a sound of their own. Their lead singer sounds quite a bit like Eric Martin from MR BIG. Between rock & hard rock, the songs have nice hooks that all party goer's can enjoy. A nice new refreshing slap in the face. Try some Podunk - my bet is you'll like this band.

5 out of 5 stars a pinnacle album for these guys out of omaha.......2006-08-07

I have lived in Omaha for over 2 years now, and I must say the music scene is amazing here, and dwarfs that of Kansas City where I lived prior. And the Quality of the groups, many of them I have heard could easily make it big if given the chance. Grasshopper takeover, a local favorite, has been scrapping and clawing to get there. One local favorite from this album is the song "no pressure", a catchy little song. This album is also interesting in the fact it ties in news clips and things between songs, mainly the story about the bands real life fiasco of being robbed. The band had their van stolen, and for over a week, they almost threw in the towel. They had lost everything after the gig, thousands of dollars in equipment and instruments. It looked bleak. But, by some good fortune they got the van back intact after a plea, and they can still rock on today. So, for a taste of Omaha with a national sound, give this album a listen.

      5 out of 5 stars Best yet!.......2004-04-26

I've been a fan for awhile and this is by far their best album. This album features the new addition of guitarist Michael Cioffero. Highly recommended.
