An extraordinary individual.......2007-04-19
Six years after his release of "One Trick Pony", Paul Simon released what could be argued is his masterpiece (he had so many), "Hearts and Bones" in 1983. This wonderful melodic work of art has a calm, cool disposition due to the four best songs in particular.
"Hearts and Bones", all the while commanded by Simon's soothing guitar chords contemplates the arc of a love affair in a unique way that only Simon can create.
"Song About The Moon" has, as Simon lyricizes, a spiritual tunish quality about it that seems to perfectly accomodate his quiet wandering voice. This is definitely an underrated song that's simply relaxing. It is just what it claims to be, a song about the moon.
"Train In The Distance" almost seems to revisit Simon's story telling ground where he left off in "Hearts And Bones", but in a different way. Bass guitar and vibes feel their way smoothly through with the cool backup vocals making this one of Simon's most memorable ballads, and the second most played song on my MP3 player.
Following is "Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War". This song is a wonderful compliment to the rest of the album. In it, the spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves.
The rest of these songs are fantastic, most unusual being "Cars Are Cars" as you may have heard, but listen to it a few times and like me, it will grow on you. Accoustic and demo versions of 4 of the songs are included as bonus tracks, including previously unissued "Shelter Of Your Arms", a work-in-progress.
Certainly all of these songs work for this album as it paints a clear picture of Paul Simon's genius songwriting ability. He proves once again that he is an extraordinary individual.
hearts and bones.......2007-04-10
commercially a flop album for paul. I personally rank it amongst his best work. Originally ment to be a simon and garfunkel album some of pauls best work is here. The late great johnny ace a song about violence in the usa links johnny ace jfk and john lennons deaths. Train in the distance is a classic simon song and hearts and bones is a great song about him and his then new wife carrie fisher. paul said after this album his career was so cold that no one paid any attention to his visits to south africa strange how things change his next album graceland became a best seller
All great, with one exception.......2006-11-25
I first purchased this album when I was 15 years old and visiting France. I had just started playing acoustic guitar and learning all things Paul Simon but had no idea this album existed. It was all I listened to for the rest of my stay. Nearly 20 years later, I still love every song on this album...
Except for "Cars Are Cars" which I hereby state is the absolute worst Paul Simon song you will ever hear. Otherwise, this album is almost perfect. One of the most underrated -- and therefore most unheard of -- songs Simon ever wrote, "Song About The Moon", pops into my head more often than I care to admit. Originally, this was to be the Simon and Garfunkel reunion album, but at the last minute, Simon decided to remove Garfunkel and release it as a solo album. Does anyone know if the tapes still exist of Garfunkel singing on any of these songs?
Paul's masterpiece.......2006-10-30
I loved this album since the first day I heard it! Therefore it became one of the very few 5-star rated albums in my collection. Generally, I like Paul a lot, but this album really takes it to the top. Starting with "Allergies" including Al Di Meola's stunning half-acoustic guitar lines, to the haunting "Song About the Moon", then the driving (almost disco-esque) "Think Too Much" (listen to the sarcastic "Hm..." after 38 seconds!) which is clearly marked by Nile Rodger's unique rhythm' guitar, to the soulful "The Late Great Johnny Ace". Did you see Simon & Garfunkel's video of their concert in Central Park? Just as Paul sang this song, a fan jumped up on the stage, but was caught by a security guard before he could get to Paul? Wow. Lennon's murder, this track (actually about Lennon) and then this incident. These are the moments rock'n roll is made of. Many thought (and think) this album is too lame. Sure, it has broad moments which are quiete, but if you are a sensible person who can feel the power of good lyrics you will disagree. I disagree. I feel that this is one of the strongest offerings Paul Simon ever released. The songs have an unequivocal quality, both composition and production wise.

His Best? Arguable, But I'd Say So.......2006-01-28
It's difficult to even quantify how underrated this album is. It's absolutely fantastic, and features the best and most haunting of all the John Lennon tribute songs, "The Late Great Johnny Ace." "Hearts and Bones," "Rene and Georgette Magritte," and "Train In the Distance" are also masterpieces. Though it didn't have the kind of cultural impact that "Graceland" did, I actually prefer this album, and this reissue has some great extra stuff on it. If you like anything you've ever heard by Paul Simon, this is worth having.

One of Paul Simon's most accomplished albums, Hearts & Bones is also among his least appreciated, a commercial disappointment at the time of its release due more to Simon's darker themes than to any discernible decline in his powers as a songwriter or instincts as a producer. The best songs here are among his most nakedly self-referential, from the bittersweet title song, sifting through the ashes of his failed marriage, to the self-recriminating "Think Too Much (a)" (as if to prove the point, he includes two songs with the title) and the fatalistic "Train in the Distance." "René and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog after the War" is a polished gem, both a musical analogue to the artist's dead- pan surrealism and a unique love song, and "The Late Great Johnny Ace" links the slain doo-wopper to the slain John Lennon. If there were justice in the set's cool reception, it was Simon's subsequent decision to ignore commercial stratagems altogether--a leap that yielded his next, groundbreaking album, Graceland. --Sam Sutherland

Listen & Learn, A PS Gem, Don't get fooled by the negative hype.......2005-09-04
The Capeman on Broadway was labelled a troubled production long before it opened onto the stage. Six years and millions of dollars in the making, the critics slated it, the punters stayed away, and the show eventually closed after only 10 weeks and 68 performances. The wave of controversy and hysteria that ensued can only be attributed to the very real horror that is the root of this album. Nevertheless, 'Songs from the Capeman' is a wonderfully musical, and ultimately perplexing album. Complex in its compositions, it is every bit as adventurous as any Paul Simon project to date, and deserves close examination in order to be fully appreciated. The Capeman tells the true story of a sixteen-year-old Puerto Rican child, Salvador Agron, convicted of a horrific double murder in 1959. Branded as the 'Capeman' by an unforgiving press, Agron was the youngest member of a gang calling themselves 'The vampires' from the upper west side of New York, his name derived from the black cape he wore on the day of the murders. Agron became a symbol of evil in the eyes of the public. Apparently remorseless, he appeared to reflect all that the public didn't want to see within a society with its values in tatters. He became the youngest person ever to be sentenced to death in the electric chair, but was pardoned just six days before the scheduled execution. Salvador Agron died of a heart attack in 1986, whilst living with his mother and sister in the Bronx. This album is a disturbingly warm narrative, lending itself to a mixture of emotions one would not readily associate with the facts of the story. However, Simons writing effectively steers the listener away from the hatred of the case, and places them firmly inside the life of a young man who's life consisted largely of persecution, prejudice and violence. The public said that the musical glorified murder, without fully appreciating what the lyrics were trying to say. They speak of love (Bernadette), hatred (The Vampires), guilt, remorse and forgiveness (Can I Forgive Him). They result in the listener travelling the same emotional path that public of 1959 did, but reaching one step further, and forgiving Agron for his crime. In many ways The Capeman is simply a vehicle for Simon to express his views on society and convey his message. Associated Press described the show as 'Underdeveloped', by the New York Daily Times as 'skimpy', and as a 'mortally wounded animal' by the New York Times, yet the reality of this album is quite different. The all too crucial factor is that we hold The Capeman as an accomplished work in its own right, and keep the distinction between the crime and the message in sharp focus. Paul Simons' music should be applauded in every respect, and one wonders where his next source of inspiration will lie. For now, though, enjoy this album, listen and appreciate it for what it really is. Paul Simon stated, "It was a privilege for me to work in this way and do this". It's also a privilege for us to listen. It is most definitely the work of a person who still has a great deal to say. If wonderful creativity, culture and intelligent writing are your thing, go out and buy this album. If not, you're missing out. Don't be fooled by negative hype that has nothing to do with music.
Underrated Masterpiece.......2004-08-20
Although one of the lesser known titles from Paul Simon's collection, "Hearts and Bones" is his greatest achievement. This is his most personal album, and has the most beautifully written songs. What makes them so wonderful, is the simplicity of the music, but the complexity of the lyrics. "Allergies" one of my least favorite songs, but it is still a catchy song with different lyrics. The title song is incredible!!!! It is almost a reflection on society and love's place in it. "When Numbers Get Serious" is a fun song with odd lyrics. I personally like (b) more than (a) for "Think Too Much." It is slower and almost romantic. (a) is still good, but I much prefer the more poetic (b). "Song About The Moon" is another masterpiece about writing songs. A look into the world of Paul Simon himself. "Train In The Distance" is a beautiful song about a struggling relationship, and is one of the best songs. "Rene And Georgette Magritte And Their Dog After The War" is my favorite song on the cd. First of all, only Paul Simon could think of a title like that. This song, also about a relationship that has almost lost its touch and two people become one, is pure magic. That's the only way to describe it. "Cars Are Cars" is fun, but is really nothing special. "The Late Great Johnny Ace" is a great closer. It has great lyrics and will make you think. I highly highly recommend this album to anyone. Buy it!!! Right now!!!
Interesting Loner Album.......2002-11-03
Here's an underrated album if there ever was one. Sure, it wasn't publicized much, but there's some really great music on here. It was released right after the short-lived S&G reunion, but I really don't fault Paul Simon for wanting Art Garfunkel's vocals off the album--it's an intensely personal album, and seems to be a true solo work. About the songs:
"Allergies" is a real gem (uh oh have I started using that phrase??), it's dark and twangy and a great rock song. The lyrics (about allergies, perhaps of the heart?) are darkly funny but also quite truthful. This song feels like something of a bridge between his earlier and later solo work, with slightly exotic rhythms and sounds. "Hearts and Bones" is beautiful--the music and the words. The words are especially exquisite, and highly personal. "When Numbers Get Serious" and "Song About the Moon" are fun but kind of cool to think about as well. I particularly like the music in "Numbers" (Paul Simon flirts with '80s rock-pop? Much much better than it sounds!) and the words on "Moon."
And now it's time to think about "Think Too Much." There are two versions: A and B. 'b' is a slower, beautiful, diverse version and strongly resembles some of his later work in South America. 'a' is awesome. I love 'a' it's fun, it's almost pop-like, but solid and gorgeous and funky. That's the right word--funky. You've got to move your hips a little on this one. The words are great too (similar to 'b' but there aRe differences), interesting to hear coming from Mr. Paul Simon....
"Train in the Distance" is another highly personal song based on a real relationship. I don't love the way it sounds, but if you like ballads (generally I tend not to), this may be the song for you! (Was that a sales pitch??) "Renee and Georgette Magritte..." is another with cool words, a cool idea, but not my favorite sound. [Which didn't stop me from freaking out when I heard it in a supermarket.] Just lay off the string section, and I would adore this gentler song.
"Cars Are Cars." OK, you won't be expecting this song. I must say I love the peppy, 80s-ish verses, but the slow section is something of a disappointment. It may not be the most profound somg Simon's ever written, but it really isn't shallow at all, especially by the end. Besides, it's fun to hear him doing this song!
"The Late Great Johnny Ace" is so personal but also universally moving. I love this song, I really do, but it's also tragic. It deals with the death of Johnny Ace, JFK, and John Lennon, subjects that bring up emotions in all of us. It sounds laid-back, but full of tension at the same time, the music is great, the words simple and harrowing all at once. The last verse still gives me chills because it's so real. (For an extremely intense, candid, and chilling version find the video of the Concert in Central Park.)
All in all, this album has a lot to offer, especially to a c-razy Paul Simon fan. (Not THAt crazy.) It seems to be a bridge between early and later solo work, very personal and powerful and often fun...fun?? yea, fun!
Paul Simon's best album?.......2002-07-30
This album was a commercial letdown, and is not normally mentioned early on when people think of Paul Simon. That said, it's an overlooked masterpiece, and just might be his best album. In addition to some great and very inventive music (Paul being caught here between the melancholy electric piano-led ballads of Still Crazy After All These Years and the musically ground-breaking Graceland), this is the album where Simon's enigmatic lyricism really came to the forefront (who else would write a song about allergies?.) One can tell merely from looking at the song titles that Paul was attempting something rather off-beat here - and he succeeds. The lyrics are not abstract, however: they're more of, as the editorial review says so well "dead beat surrealism." Some of the songs (the aforementioned Allergies, which features some awesome guitar work from Al Di Meola; the very strange When Numbers Get Serious; and the semi-hilarous but borderline facetious Cars Are Cars) are very lyrically strange, and one may well question their meaning - or intention. It's always good to hear such clever and well-crafted lyrics, however - regardles of their intent or meaning. That said, some of the other songs (such as the title track, Train In The Distance, and others) show Simon laid emotionally bare, and are great songs that touch the heart, as well as the mind and the soul. Rene and Georgette Margritte With Their Dog After The War and The Late Great Johnny Ace (which features an excellent musical coda from the great Philip Glass) are flat-out masterpieces. Hearts and Bones is an emotional, complex, and challenging album from Paul Simon that is not an easy listen. Like most great albums, it takes some time to get used to and some time to get into. The album, though, is well worth your time and effort. It is Paul Simon's masterpiece.
