4 out of 5 stars Excellent "Début".......2007-04-09

After the initial demise of CSNY, David Crosby and Graham Nash decided to continue working together. This was their first album together and one of their best. It was a big hit in the US (reaching number 4 on the Billboard album chart and being certified GOLD) and produced their only top 40 hit "Immigration Man" and the minor follow-up hit "Southbound Train". This was a strong album and provided a needed "fix" for fans who wished that CSNY had continued.

5 out of 5 stars And a gem from Jerry.......2007-03-31

In addition to the reasons other reviewers have offered for buying this CD, Garcia's guitar on The Wall Song is one of his best guest appearances.

5 out of 5 stars Creation of a masterpiece.......2007-03-08

Nash and Crosby have created a masterpiece. I purchased the album back in '72 when it was first released and fell in love with each and every song. Harmonies are tight, and the musicians create a viable backdrop for the voices of Nash and Crosby. I was thrilled to finally be able to get this on CD, as the album had seen better days, the result of MANY spinnings on the turntable. These songs, this music and the performances rank with the best CSN or CSNY offerings. One of my absolute favorite albums of ALL TIME! If you like CSN(Y), you should truly enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute best album of Crosby and Nash.......2007-01-10

The deepest, most introspective album from Crosby and Nash. If you are a lover of acoustic blues with meaningful lyrics this is for you. Had the album thirty years ago and having it back on CD is a dream come true. Now that they are touring again this album has even more value as new audiences will discover. I would rate this album as my faviourite album of all time. ****** star rating!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful music........2006-07-18

When CSN&Y formed, the premise behind the group was to make the best music they could with whomever wanted to join in. This album is by far the best exponent of that philosophy.

On this album, Crosby & Nash prove that they can make a wonderful album without Stills and Young. Nash's poppier numbers perfectly counterbalance Crosby's more cerebral trips. The harmonies are solid as a rock, and the two often overdub themselves numerous times to produce a vocal blend that just might be tighter than CS&N. Instrumental backing by various members of the Grateful Dead is complementary but never flashy or intrusive.

It's arguable that this album isn't as varied as Deja Vu, but it highlights Crosby and Nash at their respective strengths. While it might be difficult to find on CD, this album is well worth seeking out for fans of CS&N and CSN&Y.

5 out of 5 stars Fall in love all over again..........2005-12-05

A superb tribute to the ultimate rock "supergroup." Perfect background sounds for long drives or long nights spent in front of the computer screen. The orchestra perfectly captures the lush melodies of CSN&Y we all love. Highlights include a very delicate "Helplessly Hoping," a foot-tapping "Carry On," and an entrancing "Wooden Ships" (I like the tribute version of this track better than the orginal!). Buy, buy! You will be pleased.

Long time compatriots and bandmates David Crosby and Graham Nash have joined forces yet again to release the oddly named Crosby/Nash 28 years after their last studio effort, Whistling Down the Wire. This double-disc is certainly worth the wait, despite the fact that most of the 20 songs are profoundly introspective and tinged with an elegant melancholy and sense of regret for an idealized past. To their credit, after four decades, Crosby and Nash are still in perfect voice, and remain graceful foils for one another, although some of the songs don't do justice to their prodigious talents. A handful are without focus and seem to be impressions in search of a hook, save the lovely, ethereal "Lay Me Down" (penned by Crosby's son, James Raymond) and the rather esoteric '60s throwback "Luck Dragon," with its elegant space jam ending. Nash's contributions are a bit more prosaic, and seem to be autobiographical ruminations about middle age, except the chilling environmental cautionary tale, "Don't Dig Here" and haunting post-9/11 song, "Half Your Angels." But the disc really comes alive when the duo shows their old ire, "They Want It All," a clear potshot at corporate greed and politics, and a wrenching read of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars If only it would have been released as one disc..............2006-12-27

this album would have won a grammy. And no, the "highlights" album did not use the best cuts. This album showcases one of Crosby's best songs ever, "How does it shine." I was grinning from ear to ear. Nash's "Milky Way Tonight" is equally impressive.

5 out of 5 stars Best singers alive.......2006-07-07

I'm sad to read negative reviews of this fantastic double cd.
Anyone should take the time to let the songs grow up in you, and then it's pure delight. Nobody sings better than Crosby and Nash.
A very, very emotional collection of songs. One of my best cds ever.

1 out of 5 stars It's Not Deja Vu All Over Again, Yogi.......2006-07-05

Crosby and Nash's latest attempt at music is really meant to be a lesson to those hanging onto their dreams...you'll know when it's time to hang it up. For C&N, the time is now.

Nothing on this disc excites you. As a contemporary, I can remember fondly the days when I waited for the next CSNY (or without Y) tune to play on the radio. Progressive Rock is what we called it; their latest effort is Regressive Crock.

Do yourself a favor...buy Deja Vu all over again...you'll find more pleasure in it.

3 out of 5 stars More Is Not Always More........2006-06-10

A quick addition of all the song lengths on this effort will reveal that they could've easily fit on a single, more affordable, compact disc release.

But even that disc would have been greatly improved -- perhaps the first classic from these legends in some time -- had they chosen to leave at least a half-dozen of songs off.

With that said, there are certainly a dozen tracks that are quite nice. Crosby and Nash really shine as they perform many tunes written by others. And Crosby does manage to add one more classic to his repertoire, with the disc-one-ending "How Does It Shine?".

What stands out the most to me, though, is the production on this set. It is outstanding in a way that surpasses the remastered versions of their absolute classics. (Maybe technology isn't so bad, after all.) Even the mediocre songs sound pretty good...compared to the such poorly-produced recent efforts such as CSN&Y's "Looking Forward."

Yes, at times, this is a real car stereo tester...best enjoyed on a leisurely road trip with just enough inclement weather to require the windows to remain up. However, do be prepared to hit that skip button a few times.

5 out of 5 stars CSN still on their best.......2005-11-28

Even Stephen Stills is missing the two genius stills sings like they are three of them. The harmony is still perfect after all these years. This CD is must for every big fun of CSNY.

4 out of 5 stars FOUR STARS FOR THE MUSIC BUT GET THE 2 CD SET!.......2006-07-28

THIS RELEASE IS VERY STUPID GIVEN THAT IT IS JUST "HIGHLIGHTS" OF THE ALREADY EXCELLENT 2 CD "CROSBY NASH". I ALWAYS COMPLAINED THAT THE 2 CD SET CONTAINED LESS THAN 80 MINUTES OF (ADMITTEDLY GREAT) MUSIC, WHICH WOULD HAVE FIT IN ONE CD. SO IF THEY WERE GOING TO RELEASE A 1 CD VERSION, THEN ALL OF THE SONGS SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED, AS THEY WERE ALL WORTHWHILE, WITHOUT ANY TURKEYS. BUT THEY GET TO CHARGE US DOUBLE CD PRICES FOR WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN AN EXCELLENT SINGLE CD. SHAME ON C/N!

STILL IF YOU ARE A FAN, DO NOT HESITATE TO GET THE DOUBLE CD. IT IS THAT GOOD.

5 out of 5 stars A great recording.......2000-06-18

I had it on tape and I literally wore the tape out listening to it. This is the happiest, most listenable album of its era. If you love traffic, you love Dave Mason. If you love reggae, you'll love this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship throughout.......1999-03-18

This is my all-time favorite Dave Mason work. Bought it when it first came out on vinyl and the CD still gets regular play. Dave is truly at his best on this album, but pay attention to the work of the other musicians as well. Drums, bass, keyboards, back-up vocals... all are excellent. The funky title track is just sheer musical fun.

Dave Mason has always been under-rated by the record-buying public, but not by fellow musicians. The credits of people who cut tracks on his solo albums reads like a who's who of classic rock. This work is no exception. If you're a musician who appreciates good stuff when you hear it, no matter what the genre or generation, check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars Melody in abundance.......1999-01-08

When you need an hour of relaxation, this is one CD you should reach for. Enjoyable melodies, fluid guitar work and fine harmony vocals all intertwine to provide an aural pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars A melodic treat full of great guitar and harmonies.......1998-12-31

I originally bought this album on vinyl from Virgin Records in Birmingham back in the seventies when it was first released. I'd seen Dave Mason on the Old Grey Whistle Test (cult British TV music show) and decided to check out his music. I was very pleasantly surprised by the catchy melodies incorporated in the songs on this album. Dave's vocals have a certain poignancy and sincerity, and when the vocal harmonies of both Crosby and Nash and the Manhattan Transfer join in, then you're guaranteed an aural treat. Add to this the fluid guitar playing that is Mason's trademark, and you have a damn fine record.

The two standout tracks for me are "Give me a reason why", which you won't stop humming, and "Long lost friend", which builds to a stirring guitar-filled finish. A spledid version of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting and Hoping" is also worthy of note. If you want a classy, easy on the ear album full of catchy melodies, buy this !

5 out of 5 stars Graham Nash goes synth-pop, and believe it or not, he pulls it off big-time.......2006-05-04

If you happen to pick this album up at a garage sale or something based on name recognition, without bothering to look at the year of release, you may be in for a hell of a surprise here.

Released in 1986, "Innocent Eyes" is Graham Nash's fourth solo album, and it ain't hard to see why it would have a lousy reputation among fans of Nash and the 'law firm'. Why? Because it sounds way different than what most anyone would probably associate with Mr. Nash, plus of the 10 songs, four of them weren't at all written by Graham. This album is flat-out EIGHTIES-style rock with a vengeance: super-slick production, booming electronic drums, 'metallic' and/or heavily chorused guitars (courtesy of session ace Michael Landau), in-your-face synthesizers.

Thing is, this is slick Eighties rock at its best, and no, I don't mean that to sound like an oxymoron--this album is a BLAST. Sometimes the lyrics ARE 'dumb', but in an amusing, intentional way--Graham seems to have his tongue firmly in cheek on songs such as the riotous, insanely catchy opener "See You In Prague and the intentionally 'annoying' and repetitive album-closing peace cry "I Got A Rock". The Paul Bliss-penned title track is TOTALLY 80's for sure, thanks in part to the additional vocals from Kenny Loggins, but it's a hook-fest that you simply can't deny. "Newday", written by Nash and longtime associate Craig Doerge, has lyrics that look bare-bones on paper, but the catchy guitar riffery, melodicism, and positive energy make it uplifting and impossible to resist. Nash also supplies a couple of raging gems with the cathartic, lyrically creeped-out "Keep Away From Me"; and the massively-catchy, uptempo protest rocker "Over The Wall".

Graham wrote a couple of great ballads for the album as well. "Glass And Steel", the one song on the album NOT to feature a drum machine, sounds as though Graham may have written it about David Crosby. And "Sad Eyes" is an uplifting love ballad, with great vocal contribution from James Taylor.

Only on a couple of songs do the lyrics start to reek of mindless drivel. "Don't Listen To The Rumours" has lyrics that are just too dumb and unresolved for their own good, but dammit, it's just so appealingly catchy anyway. The reggae-fied "Chippin' Away" has a fairly dumb and predictable chorus, but the verses are irresistibly catchy, and the song's feel-good vibe really gets under your skin (Taylor is clearly audible on this track as well, despite not being credited).

It certainly doesn't hurt that Nash is in peak form vocally throughout the album, often double-tracking his lead vocals to excellent effect. If you're looking for concrete proof of Graham Nash as a brilliant singer-songwriter, you're better off starting with "Songs For Beginners". But if you're already a Nash fan and are able to appreciate fun, well-executed '80s synth-pop, then tap into your sense of humor a little, give "Innocent Eyes" a try, and you'll get a real blast out of it. "Innocent Eyes" is a true winner!

5 out of 5 stars Last Nash Solo Album.......2004-05-13

Nash's last solo album to date is a successful attempt to place his voice in a synth-pop musical setting. It worked, and so did most of the songs - more political consciousness raising in action, right in the middle of the Reagan era, which was a brave deed.
