Filled with pretty melodies, delicate strumming, and concise, focused, melodic tunes, Phish's eighth studio record marks a bit of a departure from the norm, but not as much of a departure as many might think. For one thing, 1996's Billy Breathes moved in a similar direction--to the delight of casual fans and the dismay of many Phish fanatics. For another, even at their most frenetic and far-reaching, the band has always shown a keen pop sensibility, even if it was merely a chance to catch their breath. Make no mistake: most of the songs on Farmhouse are wonderfully, irresistibly catchy, and often quite lovely. This was clearly singer and guitarist Trey Anastasio's baby from the get-go, and he fills the album with some of his most appealing compositions. And as usual, there's a diverse range of styles, from straight pop to country soul to easy funk to gentle balladry. That said, fans used to hearing these songs live will most likely be disappointed by Farmhouse. Too often, you find yourself waiting for the explosive jam that never happens, and when it does, as on "Piper," it seems oddly out of place. Ironically, the final song, the cunning instrumental "First Tube," reminds you what you've been missing all along--bite. In the long run, this is not the album that Phish will be remembered for, playing away from what makes them unique, but as you find your toes tapping and your mouth humming along, you realize that it's certainly an enjoyable listen and satisfying in its own way. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Great phreaking CD.......2007-01-20

I am a big phan, I saw phish in phoenix every show since Ripht. Then I phell away phor a while, started listening to pholk music a lot. Pharmhouse brought me back to reality. Great guitar riphs, jams, you name it. Everything phish is about is in here. Buy it, you won't be disappointed even if it's your phirst phish CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall..........2006-10-06

Farmhouse - The title track, and one of the best on the record. I was wondering when it was going to be released. Originally, Phish played the song on the "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" show in 1996(or so). Great song, true to the original.

Twist - Another song which had been kicking around since the "Pre-Ghost" days. Unfortunately, there was some MAJOR retooling of the song. Listen to any of the concerts around 96/97 for a MUCH BETTER version of Twist. I'm not a fan of the changes.

Bug - Catchy, fun, it grows on you. I'd say it's the sleeper track of the album.

Back on the Train - Hmmm... I'm still not amused by the song. Very stiff, rigid, mechanical playing. I usually skip this one during playback. A horrible live tune.

Heavy Things - I'm not one of the "Bouncin' Bashers" aka "The Phish Gestapo". This is a GREAT track. Very cleaver lyrics with an awesome rhythm.

Gotta Jibboo - The song's much better live and without the digital loop. This song's mediocre on the album.

Dirt - Here's another song which started life in the 96/97 time-frame. Better live, but good here.

Piper - Here's the shortest Piper ever. Oh, and from now on, no Pipers may be any longer. The album version was the death sentence for a great song. It's not bad on the album, but once transcribed, no more did we see the twenty minute Pipers of old. Good song, but I wish they remembered what the album is for. (Framework > < Cage)

Sleep - The song after Driver, I mean, wait... Where's Driver? When Phish toured with this mini-acoustic set-up, they played Driver and Sleep. Sleep is a good song and this captures it well, but why is Driver only on the Jap version?

The Inlaw Josie Wales - Skip - Boring acoustic instrumentals are, well... boring! Give me "All Things Reconsidered" any day. I never once said, "Yes! Dude, they're playing The Inlaw Josie Wales, Holy S-!"

Sand - What? There's more? - That's not a comment about Sand, but after "Inlaw" I think I passed out. Sand has a good beat and takes things in a different direction. This IS Phish! Jazzy, with Rhythm and Blues, Sand should be right after Sleep without the disconnect.

First Tube - Bangin' from start to finish! This is possibly one of the best instrumentals ever! The drums and bass come in pumping with Trey doing a Middle-Eastern/Indian inspired progression on guitar. Page adds to the mysticism (keyboards are the counterpoint, with piano adding accents to the guitar work). The end feels like a victory celebration.

If you bought the import (Jap Version):

Driver - Shouldn't have been left off of the American version. Here's a great song, that's been done some justice.

Mist - aka "Mountains in the Mist" - Again, I'm not sure why it's only on the Jap version, but these two songs, if sequenced correctly, would actually make this album "Pre-Ghost" worthy.

Four stars for not having Driver or Mist on the American release. Good overall and very accessible for the first time listener. If you like this album or want another great album by Phish, then try "Billy Breathes", "Rift", "Undermind", or "Hoist". For the more adventurous listener take on "Lawn Boy", "Junta", "Round Room", "Picture of Nectar", or "The White Tape". The Siket Disc is an acquired taste, not for everyone.

If you want to hear better stuff then either purchase or trade for live material. Songs like "Vultures", "Simple", "Mike's Song", "I am Hydrogen", "Weekapaug Groove", "The Curtain", "Axilla I", and "Big Black Furry Creatures from Mars"(BBFCM) are only found as live tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Some very good songs; but overall weakest studio album.......2006-05-21

This is Phish's seventh or eighth studio album, depending on if you count Junta. It is 49 minutes long and has very good sound quality.

Like all Phish albums, this CD has some very good songs on it. I think this CD is at its best when the group is playing stripped down music and concentrating on the songs. I think Bug is the best thing on the CD. Also the combination of Sleep and the Inlaw Jesse Wales is very nice. All of these feature an acoustic sound and some very nice melodies. The other two good tracks are Back On The Train and Dirt.

But, the rest of the tracks I think are just a waste.

It starts out with the very tedious title track. Twist starts out good, but then looses it way. Heavy things is fairly mediocre song. It's not bad, I just wouldn't want to hear it again.

Gotta Jibboo starts out very good and I had a lot of hopes for it. But, the babytalk words really bring it down. And that repeated high pitched noise that sounds like a siren or an alarm clock gets really annoying. You hope somebody would hit the snooze button already. Piper could have been a very nice instrumental but it too is ruined by more high pitched noises.

Sand, where they try to sing as fast as they can is just studid. Most of the other tracks are just boring and tedious. The final instrumental, First Tube, is just stepping through the scales repeatedly. It might be interesting at 2 minutes, but at 6 minutes it just goes on for too long.

I would suggest get Undermind or Lawn Boy before this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very Phishy.......2005-09-06

As a phan it is personally my phavorite studio album. Its just one of those cds that you can throw on and be sharin in the groove all the way through. My personal phavorite tracks would be pharmhouse, bug, heavy things, gotta jibboo, dirt, and sleep. Its a must have for anyone interested in phish.

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great Phish Album.......2005-08-31

Even though Phish is known as a live band, they still made some great studio albums. In my opinion, the great Phish studio albums are Story of the Ghost, Junta, Rift and Lawn Boy (and the Siket disc if that counts). Farmhouse is not one of their best, but then again, it's still pretty decent, if only as a source to get to know the scaled down versions of these songs. However, the best way to appreciate the songs from this album is to find them on the many live releases that are available. The songs that would end up on Farmhouse all debuted live between 1997 to 1998 so look for a show from that time period to hear these songs. They were in somewhat heavy (for Phish) rotation during those years and most of these songs continued to find their way into setlists from time to time right up until the end. As far as studio albums go, I would get the 4 great ones I mentioned above as well as Round Room, Hoist, and Picture of Nectar before getting Farmhouse.

As might be expected, the soundtrack to Hilary and Jackie plays a highly prominent role in this film about the emotionally fraught relationship between two gifted sisters, one of whom is the brilliant cellist Jacqueline Du Pré. Certainly composer Barrington Pheloung--whose credits include the Inspector Morse series and the evocative score to Truly, Madly, Deeply--faced a heady challenge in writing music to be heard alongside Du Pré's rhapsodic, signature interpretation of the Edward Elgar Cello Concerto, not to mention other classical selections. Even so, the resonantly autumnal, neo-Romantic flavor of his score aptly mirrors the narrative's flashback-oriented technique. His insistence on the cello's urgent high register (played by soloist Caroline Dale) creates a poignant musical portrait of its tragically stricken protagonist. Most of the CD, however, is given to the entire Elgar concerto--an especially effective choice as against the usual potpourri of classical snippets. This charged, elegiac, and easily accessible work--Elgar's own valedictory composition for orchestra--becomes a sort of musical metaphor for Du Pré's emotional journey and gains from being heard in its full context. While the performance featured here is conducted by husband Daniel Barenboim, you'll probably be inspired to try Du Pré's never-bettered version of the Elgar on EMI with John Barbirolli. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars identified the composer of the tune found in "Holiday Song".......2005-12-16

My father really enjoys the music from "Hilary & Jackie." His mother sang him the tune in "Holiday Song" as a child, as she heard it from relatives who were musicians. I found out from Barrington Pheloung's website that the melody was written by a composer named Johannes Fries, though it was originally attributed to Mozart. Just thought that I'd share that with you, since there apparently are others who are searching for the original music, too. The Elgar concerto is a classic recording, a mainstay in any basic classical library.

4 out of 5 stars ...masterful.......2004-03-04

Undoubtably the main focus of the c.d is the Elgar "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra which is presented in whole. Prior to Jacquelines performance of the work, it was little known, misunderstood, unloved and infrequently played...she was able to probe it's depths like no other person before her, Elgar's "Cello Concerto" needed her. But this particular recording isn't of her best, Barbirolli conducting the London Symphony Orchestra is highly regarded as the best. No two performances were exactly alike and the recording on this disc being her second performance, but it still paints a superb picture of a artist in full bloom.
Barrington Pheloung's score enhances the intense emotions portrayed in the film whether it's anger, pain, joy, depair or hope. Apart from the Elgar, the cello heard is from Caroline Dale...she is able to capture the spirit and sound of Jacqueline.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Inspiring.......2001-05-12

Few orchestral pieces are so moving as Jacqueline DuPre's performances of Sir Edward Elgar's Concerto for Cello. The emotion that Ms. DuPre portrays is enough to make me want to grab a cello and play it (too bad I'm a flutist, ha). This album features the entire concerto, as well as several moving pieces composed for the film by Barrington Pheloung. This CD is an absolute must for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Hilary and Jackie- The Music that made the film.......2000-02-03

The soundtrack can only be described as inspirational. Listening to the sountrack, which has been so well compiled, only deepens the feelings of loss felt for the late Cellist extraordinare, Jackie Du Pre.For lovers of the film this soundtrack is a must, the highlight definately being the rendition of Elgar's Concerto, by far Ms Du Pre's most highly acclaimed work.

5 out of 5 stars profoundly romantic and tragic.......1999-09-23

Like many others, I was bewitched by the beauty of this music, let alone the uniqueness of Elgar's concerto and brilliant performance of Ms. Du Pre. My heart goes to the family, for their brave attitude and insightful proceeding of Jackie's story. The tune "Holiday Song", which used to be "their" song, I personally remember it from my childhood as a Mozart's tune, called "Lullaby". Unfortunately, I don't know how to get in touch with Jackie's family, but I wonder if anybody else noticed the same thing. My deepest respect for Jackie's art.

Forget GARY MOORE or just about any other current british blues player, this man reigns supreme. This is electric white blues at it's finest from a complete unknown. Somewhere between traditional and heavy electric, you'll find SIBUN. He can riff with the best of them, but can be subtle when it is called for. Great songs, good vocals and awesome guitar playing, if that sounds like you, give the 2 SIBUN releases a go, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music regardless of your Phish fan status........2006-11-18

While I do like Phish, I don't own any of their CD's and I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan. However, I had the opportunity to hear this album and I was blown away. The arrangements and performances have a vitality to them that is refreshing, at times fun, at times intense, and all around just plain good music. I highly recommend giving this music a listen. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Take on a Great Band.......2006-08-07

I've encountered many different incarnations of Phish's music and haven't loved all of them to be honest. This album proved to be innovative and enjoyable. The interpretations are original and, for a true fan of the music, refreshing. An excellent tribute to the music.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Arrangements!.......2005-02-15

This is an awesome compilation of classic Phish songs played in a classical format. My fiance gave this to me for my birthday and we listen to it all the time. I have been a Phishhead for years and was very impressed...a must have for something a little different!

4 out of 5 stars A completly new outlook on Phish ........2005-02-07

I was really surprised by this collection of Phish songs. The arrangements stay true to the original songs while also giving them a more "classical" twist.

I was a true Phishhead back in the day and have to say this opened the music up in a whole new way. I recommend it as a curious addition to any phans collection.

(I've also played it for people who never really liked Phish as a band and they enjoyed this CD even after I revealed the title.)

5 out of 5 stars The sound of Phish.......2005-02-01

This is a great CD- a must have for any hardcore Phish Phan. the mellow sound of phish is really captured within the sounds of flawless string work. a beautiful recreation of the greatest jam band of all time- don't miss out- add this one to your phish collection. appreciate the great work done by prestigious orchestrators to create an album great to listen to anytime!

4 out of 5 stars Good intro for newbies.......2001-11-24

As a huge phan who is always trying to spread the word of phish, I find that this is the best album to start out with. This is by far not my fav studio release, but I have found that this is the album that non-phans are most open to on the first hearing. Now, this version in particular is pretty sweet for the long time phan, due to the extra studio tracks. I must say it was very much worth the extra bucks it cost, just to get a nice clean version of Driver and Mist. I also find that this album, although lacking the nice long jambased songs we have come to love (with the possible exception of Piper) does have a tight feel to it. The flow is a bit odd a points, but the two extra tracks at the end give the album a sense of closure, unlike the american version, which ends so abruptly. If nothing else, get a version of this disc simply for "First tube" one of the most digady dancy songs from our fav vermont boys, period. This song kicks, hard core!

4 out of 5 stars Not so Shaby but... is it not the same cd?.......2001-02-27

By all means Farmhouse is a great album, probably the best all studio, (not including the crowd noise inserted) album Phish has relased with the exception of Rift... although all of the albums generaly appeal to me. I gueses the main question is are the two extra songs and some japanese writting worth the extra 15 dollars for the same album? Well frankly many people would say that 32 dollars is deffanitly a resonable amount for some whistles and bells. not to mention the ability to not pay sales tax on this item makes it even more appealing.

    5 out of 5 stars bonus tracks.......2000-10-11

this cd is all about the two bonus tracks. to have the studio versions of driver and mountains in the mist, are a must for a true phish phan.

besides the bonus tracks you get the latest effort from the phabulous phour known more comonly as PHISH.

4 out of 5 stars One Phantastic Review.......2000-10-06

Hello. If you're thinking this album is stuffed with Trey's long riffs, think again. This album is dedicated to new Phish phans who like many enjoy listening to their supremely crystal clear and unique sounds. The tracks in this album were all heard at the Y2K concert in Florida.

The album has rhythmically been molded to fit smoother and easier to follow tracks as opposed to other songs created by Phish. I think this album is a great album with which to play along or sing to. This album feels as if it appeals to little children since the cell membranes of Phish all have reproduced and created young phish of their own.

I learned to play this album in one week. Not nearly as long as others such as Picture of Nectar, Story of the Ghost, Rift, A 'Long' One, Billy Breathes, and others.

These extra tracks should not cost [more] even though Phish played this in Japan in their Summer 2000 Tour

I'm sorry to say that Phish will not be playing for some while and noone can ever match the longevity and creativity created in the Y2K Big Cypress event.

Maybe in the future someone else can be as cool as that, but I doubt it!
