5 out of 5 stars Dickey Betts And GREAT Southern.......2007-01-01

This remastered CD combines the two albums Dickey Betts released in 1977 and 1978, during the Allman Brothers Band's first split, with his own band, Great Southern (note the emphasis on "Great" in the title of this review). These albums show that, contrary to what a lot of critics said at the time, Betts was still at the top of his game on these albums, which, despite a few areas that drag a bit, are a great example to show that Betts was just as important to the Allmans' success as Gregg, Duane, and Berry Oakley. Betts' advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist gives "You Can Have Her (I Don't Want Her)" the feel of a diss against a woman who insists on a romantic vacation in Bali, and makes DICKEY BETTS & GREAT SOUTHERN/ATLANTA'S BURNING DOWN an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

4 out of 5 stars Big Dickie.......2007-03-10

I don't have this album as I already own all but one of the tracks. However, if I was to put together a best-of for Dickie Betts I couldn't really improve on this. This albums gives an excellent picture of Betts' development as an artist over a 15 year period and covers, country, rock, blues with a little jazz thrown in to round out a ripper of an album. Shame about the cover though.

5 out of 5 stars GRITZ Magazine Review by Michael Buffalo Smith.......2006-11-07

This excellent compilation includes all the best of Dickey Betts' best work between the mid-seventies and late 1980's. The lone Allman Brothers Band track from 1973, "Ramblin' Man," was the band's biggest radio hit ever, penned and sung by Betts.

There are four tracks from his debut solo album, "Highway Call", and a great live track with Betts joined by the Charlie Daniels Band andfriends during a Volunteer Jam. "Sweet Mama," written by Billy Joe Shaver rocks. There is also and live Betts track, "No Hard Times" that originally appeared on the Capricorn Records release "Hotel, Motels and Road Shows."

Four tracks each from both of his Dickey Betts and Great Southern releases join two tracks from The Dickey Betts Band (featuring Warren Haynes and Matt Abts, later of Gov't Mule, and keyboard wiz Johnny Neel.)

It's a great collection that flows along with ease, showcasing all the various sides of Betts, from country to blues, jazz and even gospel. A fine tribute to "The Ramblin' Man."

5 out of 5 stars a heavy duty must have album.......2006-08-01

i know that everybodys personal taste differs, but. so, if you like great guitars, singing (harmonys),back beat (bass drums)don't sit there trying to decide weather to buy this album or not. this is in my top three allman bros. albums of all time. case closed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Dickey Betts Solo Album.......2005-08-05

PATTERN DISRUPTIVE is a great solo album by Dickey Betts. It's harder-edged than his 70s work with the Allman Brothers Band, but that doesn't matter, because that band's influence is very much in abundance here. The best song on this CD is "Time To Roll", which features co-guitarist Warren Haynes on lead vocals. Given that both Betts and Haynes advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, one could say that Haynes is telling his woman, "You planned a Bali vacation for us, so I'm leaving you and moving on." This is a great CD, so pick it up if you find it.

    5 out of 5 stars 80's Rock.......2002-08-12

I really like this record, but it's not at all what you would expect from Dickey Betts. There isn't a trace of country in the entire album, and only a hint of blues. Instead, this record is pure 80's power rock. If you remember how guitar rock sounded in 1988 (when this was recorded), you will appreciate this record.

If you are expecting another country-flavored "Highway Call", or some straight-ahead Allman Bros blues, forget it, this record will disappoint you. But if you enjoy hard rocking guitar, this record features two of the best in Betts and Haynes.

One more reason you may be interested in this record... I believe this is one of the earliest recorded pairings of Warren Haynes and Matt Abts. They, along with bassist Allen Woody, would later form the power-trio-jam-band, Gov't Mule.

    1 out of 5 stars Review.......2002-01-06

I USE to own this CD,but, I hated it and therefor... did not listen to it much at all. I ended up donating it to the local Library.

3 out of 5 stars OVERRATED, who is the key grip and stunt men?.......2000-12-05

duanes tune is a very very good song. this band is very talented. that being said, these guys dont sound like a great band. they sound like they should be doing songs for soundtracks for 80's movies. i mean listen to it--they sound like they should be played during the credits of spaceballs or wierd science. i am an ALLMANIAC (peachhead) as well, but this sounds neither like dickey's nor greg's style.

i like dickey betts & great southern better.

    3 out of 5 stars Selectively Worthwhile.......2006-01-22

This chestnut from Butch Baldassari's Nashville Mandolin Ensemble is a mixed bag. Parts of it are very much worth a listen. I particularly like their rendition of the Allman Brothers classic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and while their take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" isn't transcendent, it's pretty sharp. It's especially noteworthy how much sound the ensemble is able to get out of only six instruments with a fairly narrow range of sound.

But not all of it bears up to repeated listening. The "Bluegrass" section of the album is worthwhile, but the "Bach>>Beatles" part is awkward. The renditions of "Sleepers Awake" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" sound really thin, and the "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," one of the more enduringly moving pieces from Bach's body of work, comes across as kind of sleepy. The sound the ensemble gets out of their instruments is big, but not varied, and especially on the three classical pieces that kick of the album, the effect is an unearned sense of being almost tepid.

Because it's fairly inexpensive, this album is probably worth getting for the second half of the playlist, which is very much listenable. But if you're going to play the album more than once you need to be selective in your listening. Worthwhile but spotty, this album is a valiant addition to the canon of mandolin music, but not something that will rest permanently in your CD changer.

    5 out of 5 stars Monstrously good!.......2005-05-25

Playing Time - 50:51 -- With over a decade under their belts, The Nashville Mandolin Ensemble has now trimmed down to a tight-knit and lean sextet for their fourth album, a presentation of 15 numbers recorded live at Vanderbilt University. The group features mando-family instruments (mandolins, mandola, mandocello) supplemented with 5-string viola, guitar and bass. The artists include Butch Baldassari, Stephan Dudash, Walter Carter, John Hedgecoth, Van Manakas, and David Spicher. In keeping with the program and album's title ("Bach, Beatles, Bluegrass"), the album opens with three neat classical Bach compositions, followed by three meaty selections from John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The "bluegrass" is much more than just that with tunes from the genres of jazz, Gypsy, swing, Dawg, new acoustic and old-time music. Contempoary compositions from mandolinist Charlie Provenza and guitarist Roger Hudson are first-rate-and-a-half. It's amazing to hear what these hot pickers do with a number like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," written by Dickey Betts, who was lead guitarist with the Allman Brothers in the sixties and seventies. Then, they can also evoke images of a moonlit evening at a café in Paris with their simply dee-lish appeteaser, "Nuages" from Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. It's a joy to hear musicians of this caliber take on a wide range of material from "Stardust" to "Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe." Ensemble member Butch Baldassari contributes a bouncy original "Jack Rabbit Trail," which provides some icing for this mandocake. Not losing sight of their roots, two traditional numbers close out the album. Walter Carter, mandola player, is deserving of special recognition for his quality and classy arranging of seven of the songs. For a live recording, the sound quality is excellent and fortunately no annoying audience applause is included. This album is monstrously good, and it is further proof that Nashville currently sports one of the finest mandolin ensembles in the world. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars If only they were all as good as the title track.......2006-03-16

The title track of this is a largely unheard masterpiece that stands with the best work of Dickey Betts with or without the Allmans. Give it 6 stars. Unfortunately, the rest of the album is not at that level. It's good although not great and one would have to say that this material is a notch below much of his ABB output. Average it to 3.5 stars I guess.
      Cool album cover too.

5 out of 5 stars Great guitar work by a legendary guitarist.......2005-01-15

My dad and I used to listen to this album on 8-track in his '74 Chevy until we wore it out (even the trusty matchbook wouldn't fix it). This album contains some great guitar work by Dickey, and the band follows his lead nicely. "Good Time Feeling," "Back On the Road Again," and "You Can Have Her" are great southern rock tunes, the type of songs made for drivin' fast. The rest of the album is much more mellow, great for sitting on a porch swing and puttin' a buzz on. If you're an ABB fan or a guitar player, check this one out. It's not "Live at the Fillmore East" but it's a good album containing good songs.

      5 out of 5 stars Right on!.......2003-01-15

Great Southern rock. If you love Dickey Betts music you'll want to have this. "Atlanta's Burning Down" (the song) is quite moving.

1 out of 5 stars Drippy, dragging, over the hill, close up and go home music........1999-07-14

Dickey Betts has lost his shine completely. Only the first cut has any life to it, and his voice is worn out on all of them; sounds ridden hard and watered hot. This disc is as depressing as a hangover that you can play over and over again. Buy something else.

3 out of 5 stars Not Up To Allman Brother Status But Pretty Worthwhile.......2001-07-12

Dickey Betts is one taleneted guitarist and a pretty good vocalist as well. This solo release does have some fine moments. The closing track Bourgenvillia is one pretty tune with goregous guitar embellishments both from the lead and rhythm players. The other songs are pretty catchy. However, they all sound pretty a like. A couple of them even have the same opening riff. The drummers are OK but not as powerful as the Trucks/Jamoe tandem from the Allman Brothers. I still own this on tape recorded off my old scratched up record, one of these days I'll get a fresh copy, it's on my to do list. I still love it. Any guitar player has to love this. Dicky Betts never ceases to amaze me with his playing. Some of the double leads these guys run against each other leaves you wonder where to start. This kind of music is a great teacher for those who try and imitate it.

I used to see these guys at a little bar called the wreck in Bradenton Beach, they'd come in and jam with just about anyone who was playing there. They are very nice people too! Trust me, if you are a guitar player you'll love this album

      4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2000-12-05

this album is good, usually placed behind pattern disruptive, but i believe this is better. it has some allman quality songs: sweet virginia, run gypsy run, and bougainvillia are great songs. 'nothing you can do', 'out to get me" and california blues' grow on you as well. one problem is the last two mentoned(out to get me/calif..) have the SAME EXACT opening and closing riff. they sound very similar. i dont know how they got away with that, but over all, it is a very good record. worth having to complete an allman brothers collection

      4 out of 5 stars good stuff!.......2000-02-09

I bought this on vinyl in a cut-out bin many (15?) years ago and loved it. Some good tunes that chug along with nice slide work and typically laid-back Betts vocals. Definitely worth picking up if into ABB at all.

      Product Description

This 3 CD Instant Live release was recorded at The Odeon, in Cleveland, OH, on 3/9/04. Dickey is on the road with the newer version of Great Southern, including drummer Frankie Lombardi, virtuoso bass player Brother Dave, and Dan Toler providing intricate harmony parts and soaring leads. The show kicked off with Little Martha and Steady Rolling Man and then into crowd favorite Blue Sky. Ramblin Man was one of the biggest crowd pleasers of the evening, along with Nobody Knows and Elizabeth Reed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tunes within an Uneven Show.......2006-12-10

To be honest, I'd have to give this whole concert only 4 stars since I don't like some of the songs much at all, but I created a playlist that's about the length of one CD that is all outstanding tunes, so I give the set five stars. First of all, I should say that I've been a Dickey Betts fan since the early 70s, and still go to see him frequently. Secondly, the series of numbers I think are absolutely first rate are Little Martha > Steady Rolling Man > Change My Way of Living > Donna Maria > Having a Good Time > Ramblin' Man > No One To Run With > Seven Turns > Jessica. As far as the band goes, I think all of the guys playing with him are excellent. I think if you get the collection, you'll find at least that the songs I list are great, and you may well find more.

      4 out of 5 stars ****1/4 - great "instant live" album.......2006-03-20

The "Instant Live" albums are spare in packaging and lacking in liner notes, but that's not really the point...if you're checking out live Dickey Betts, you probably know what you're in for.
Betts' vocals sound a bit rusty, but his playing, and that of co-lead guitarist Dan Toler, is top-notch, and the sound is terrific, clear and crisp.

The 18 tracks take up three discs, and while it would have been nice to hear a couple more songs from Betts' solo albums, you really can't complain about what is here. Robert Johnson covers, Allman Brothers classics, and an excellent new song only available on this album ("Girl With The Deep Blue Eyes", complete with some terrific instrumental breaks).
Betts shares lead vocals with keyboardist Michael Kach, whose voice is good but slightly inferior to Gregg Allman's, and one can't help but think that now and then Great Southern sound more like the Allman Brothers Band of old than the current version of ABB. But hey - all the better, right? Now we have two great "Allman Brothers Bands"...

This is one terrific find for guitar lovers (and ABB lovers as well). Perfect for a long drive along the highway, windows down. Or up. Whatever.

5 out of 5 stars This is very good although not peak form Dickey Betts.......2006-02-19

The earlier reviewers are either hammering this or lauding this as Dickey's best. I've been seeing Dickey for 30 years both solo and with Allman Brothers and this is neither Dickey's best or his worst.
Dickey's song selection is fine here and a real treat for me was the opening Little Martha. His guitar playing as well as Dan Toler's is up to the usual standard (in other words it's excellent) but what has declined is Dickey's voice. It appears that his voice just isn't what it was in his glory days and that maybe almost 40 years on the road have taken its toll.
Listen to Dickey's voice here and then ABB or solo work from 70s and 80s. Now Dickey Betts at a little less than 100 percent is still very very good and still better than almost everyone else. 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Dickey Betts is hot on this show!.......2005-11-19

I really don't see what the other reviewers are saying about Betts being sloppy, drunk or over the hill. He sings the way he has always sang, and maybe this band is not as tight as the ABB, but then who is? Great songs, great and long jams, sharp and melodious guitar solos and great audio quality.

His playing here rivals Clapton's in this year's Cream reunion.
Between the Cream live double cd and Bett's triple live cd, all jamband afficionados can hear how the original masters still can smoke. Where it all began, indeed.

If you like the ABB, southern rock or just great guitar playing, this is a great bargain!

5 out of 5 stars a must have for allman brothers band fans.......2005-06-20

after reading the poor reviews on this disc i held off on buying it for a couple of months. i bought it and can't believe that there are a.b.b. fans not totally enjoying this cd. i have heard dickeys voice better at various live shows but this performance has alot of character. not perfect but some amazing moments on this cd and incredible song list. get it!!

After being fired by fax after 32 years in the Allman Brothers, Dickey Betts took his revenge by putting a band together and recording his fifth solo album (the second under the rubric of the Dickey Betts Band), using a handful of songs he had penned for the ABB as a starting point. While not as well executed or as inspired as his early stuff with the Great Southern, Let's Get Together is an honest work of an artist looking for his groove. And sometimes he finds it. Interspersed between an indifferent ballad, a shopworn good-time jam, and a gritty blues shuffle are three exquisitely contracted and played instrumentals: "Dona Marie," the Latin-tinged ode to Betts wife, which could have been easily lifted off of a Santana record, the surefooted and jazzy "She Bop," and the Allman-esque "Rave On." But after all, this is the guy who penned the romantic classic "Jessica," and the evocative "In Memory of Elizabeth," so one shouldn't be too surprised. Betts lets his autobiography take over in the eerie "Tombstone Eyes" and the even more revealing "Here Comes the Blues Again," showing that all that pent-up rage makes for some compelling tunes. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Probably Dickey's best solo CD.......2006-01-29

If you are a fan of Dickey's work in the Allman Brothers, this is probably his most consistent solo CD. The Cd is a mix of Dickey Betts sung songs, instrumentals, and songs song by other band members. Had Dickey not parted ways with the Allman Brothers, a numnber of these songs surely would have been ABB songs. Thet title track, Tombstone Eyes, One Stop BeBop, and Dona Maria among the highlights. Dickey's guitar work as well as Mark May's is up to the usual standard here and it's a good batch of Dickey written songs.

      5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD!!!.......2004-02-09

I disagree with some of the reviews here. I think this is terrific CD...there isn't too much sax, I think it sounds great. I like Matt's vocals and the only song he sings that I would rather hear Dickey on is Tombstone Eyes. Dona Maria is a classic Betts instrumental, with what I think is Dickey's finest guitar playing. I love the song writing, I love the lyrics, and I don't feel that Dickey's voice has lost anything at all. The only complaint I have, if you want to call it that, is that I don't think Mark May is a good fit for the band. He's not as lyrical and melodic as I would prefer. I'm glad that Dickey's touring with Dangerous Dan Toler again, I've seen him with Dan and I think he's a much better fit. I hope they put out another album soon with Dan playing on it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Rocking Music!.......2003-12-05

This is one impressive effort. If you are looking to relive the Allmans at the Fillmore, look elsewhere.
Dickey and Company explore a fairly wide range of styles and genres, not just your typical southern rock/blues styles you would normally expect. One Stop Be-Bop is a fine jam, as is Rave On which opens the disk. This disc swings from jazz to blues, from Cajun to ballads. Good variety and playing.
Granted, I would love to hear Dickey singing on more of the songs, but that is a minor complaint.
If you like good, rocking music that is willing to take a few chances, this is a great disc to own.

1 out of 5 stars Now Ladies and Gentlemen...Say Hello to Paul Shaffer.......2003-05-12

Yep. Kinda sounds Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra. Nothing against Paul and Co., in fact, Paul does what he does superbly. Dickey Betts, on the other hand, once-upon-a-time was one of the premier talents in southern rock. He became the creative leader of the Allman Brothers Band after Duane's death, and his slightly redneck songwriting style and loping guitar leads is probably the only thing that saved them from extinction. He also did some very respectable solo work along the way. So I don't know what happened here. Dominant saxophone leads....his voice only on three track, maybe. Seems Dickey is just blending into the woodwork.....waiting for the monologue, perhaps?

2 out of 5 stars Past His Prime.......2003-02-18

Dickey Betts was a legendary guitarist with the Allman Brothers Band and een on solo recordings especially during the 1970's. The southern flavored soloing both light and heavy were always a joy to listen to on such classic recordings at Idlewide South, Brothers and Sisters, and Eat A Peach. Even on his Dickie Betts and Great Southern solo release, the guitar sounds are front and center and the vocals quite endearing and occasionally powerful.

On Let's Get Together Dickie Betts is not in the forefront at all. Yes there are some occasional good guitar solos and arrangements. However, way too often the saxaphone sounds of Kris Jensen are front and center. And Mr. Jensen rarely varies his tone.

What is further dissapointing is the fact that Dickey only sings lead on three of the eleven tracks. And only on the final track, Sing While I'm Walkin' is the vocal even inspired. The other vocalists Mark May and Matt Zeiner just sound so sappy with little trace of emotion or passion. Combined with the paint by numbers saxaphone sounds, many of these recordings sound like Michael Bolton singing light southern rock. This is not a good thing.

And another thing, out of the eleven songs, five of them excede six minutes and two of them are over ten. Now I have nothing against long songs. But this batch just does not have any special riffs or hooks that warrant them being so long. Yes Donna Maria has an interesting percussion solo in the middle. But the main melody is pretty forgettable.

Stick with prime time Allman Brothers material or even the self titled Dickey Betts and Great Southern record. This one is for die hards only as Dickie Betts gies the impression of being way past his prime.
