Dangerous Dreams

About the Artist
In New York, it's been convenient and popular to tap into the recycled angst fueling the early '80s revival that's on every iPod and every dance floor. Moving Units' Blake Miller, Johan Boegli (bass) and Chris Hathwell (drums) make music that is solely about the here and now.

Ask Blake Miller, Moving Units' singer/guitarist, which records were in rotation during the making of "Dangerous Dreams", the L.A. trio's roiling debut album, and he won't mention the usual post punk suspects. "Dangerous Dreams has little to do with the latest dance-punk phenomenon and more to do with the restless inner workings of three clumsy musicians who have no choice but to throw their heart and soul into these songs. "The truth of the matter is, what we did at the time was a really honest emotional expression," Miller says of the band's beginnings, "but it just happened to coincide with a sort of musical zeitgeist."

Nearly two tumultuous years in the making at various L.A. studios, the album boasts a tightrope sound whose volatility is both musical and emotional -- a result of either the band's perfectionism or it's unique chemistry. There seems to be no escape, for example, from the drum attack by Hathwell. He hits the kit like his pants are on fire, slicing off shards of spastic dancefloor grooves at will and stopping and starting on a dime with impetuous urgency.

A raggedy crew who car-crashed in L.A.'s indie music scene three years ago, the only thing the trio's backgrounds had in common then was a pent-up fury waiting to be unleashed. Miller grew up lost in Detroit's down-and-dirty suburban wasteland and suddenly found himself in Los Angeles out of step with the city's industry-driven music scene. Mild-mannered and sophisticated, Boegli emigrated to L.A. from D.C. but strangely absent were the typical hardcore roots often associated with the seminal D.C. music scene. Hathwell ventured from band to band in Southern California, eventually bumping into Miller amidst the underemployed underground.

The members finally crossed paths and melded their diverse backgrounds and styles to synthesize the early Moving Units style. Quickly going into the studio, the band recorded their first songs with a raw organic feel that instantly translated to tape.

The alchemy of those sessions was proven when four new tracks became an EP released in early 2003. A steady flow of L.A. gigs established the band as a fan favorite in the All-Ages crowd. They selected the name Moving Units to mock the sales-obsessed record industry they were united in despising, but it is open to a variety of interpretations.

By 2003, America and the rest of the world had taken notice. The band was hand-picked by Damon Albarn to open Blur's North American Tour. Contemporaries Hot Hot Heat invited the band to tour across the US and throughout the UK. Recently, a secret show on the eve of the Coachella festival found Moving Units opening for none other than the Pixies.

In addition to the dreams that haunt Miller, Boegli and Hathwell on their debut album, their waking life seems to point toward a future that will find some of their more idyllic dreams - like musical innovation and success - being realized as well. For now, they're less focused on "moving units", and more devoted to perfecting the sound of their group. "We have a clear idea about the musical territory we want to explore. It has to be raw, and it has to sound like us," Miller says of the band's top priority. "Who knows what that means? But in our heads we hope we know what that seems to mean."

Product Description
Moving Units' hotly anticipated 2004 debut full-length Dangerous Dreams is filled with the tension and hopes associated with the beginning of a musical revolution. Their proto-post-punk sound from 2003's self-titled E.P. invited comparisons to the Rapture and Yeah Yeah Yeahs - the spirit of Dangerous Dreams invokes the wonder and excitement of the first time you heard the Pixies' discordant melodies or the Minutemen's anti-establishment punk aesthetic. Moving Units' unique sound is truly in a class of its own, and their live show has inspired nothing short of fanaticism and wild abandon, described by Nylon magazine as "...a euphorically smutty, joyfully disenfranchised, danceable call to arms."

Finally, MOOD SWING gets released on cd. Better late than never. I'm delighted and surprised that MOOD SWING has connected with so many people.
And I'm really pleased that THE NAILS may be recognized as more than just the band that wrote and recorded 88 LINES ABOUT 44 WOMEN. My hope is that a new generation of listeners will discover MOOD SWING. Rock and roll is and will always be my religion and my passion. And at a time when rock has become more and more corporate and its message less and less provocative, I can say, absolutely, that I never got into rock and roll for money or fame. I got into it because I had no choice. When the spirits of rock and roll spoke, I listened and I made my move.

p.s. Andru, if you're ever in Taos, New Mexico, look me up. The drinks are on me.

Thanks, MARC CAMPBELL, THE NAILS.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER RECORDED -- OBSCENELY IGNORED.......2007-05-23

I don't frequently engage in hyperbole, but this album has ALWAYS been in my Top Ten favorite records of all time. Really. "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys; "Something/Anything" by Todd Rundgren; "Help!" (the Brit version) by the Beatles; and then there's "Mood Swing" by the Nails. How this record and the singular vocal talents of Marc Campbell could be overlooked in 1984 when this album came out -- and how it could remain unissued on CD nearly 25 years -- is indeed one of the great mysteries of rock (next to the "Paul-Is-Dead" hoax; see my book Turn Me On, Dead Man for that story). Do yourself a favor -- even if you've only heard "88 Lines About 44 Women", you need to hear "Home Of The Brave", "White Wall", "Mood Swing" and a killer version of "Let It All Hang Out" whose arrangement was stolen wholesale by Huey Lewis and The News for their song "I Want A New Drug". Buy this now; you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Repetitive Indie.......2006-03-01

This is an extremely repetitive CD. Patterns, riffs, and their style is completely repeated on every song. Don't get me wrong, every song is incredible. From opener Emancipation with descending guitar patterns, and higher octaves with vocal melodies with striking catchy lyrics saying "I'm Your Slave" you realize this band has some incredible talent with such simple riffs. The record presents these songs nearly like the sound you would hear at their live show.

Overall, great sound, some melodies that will never be forgotten, and a throwback style that this group's fans can enjoy for the time being. Not original I'll give you that but amazing 80's and funk-disco basslines. Triplet pattern in many songs, including their old EP. It's become the "Moving Units Bassline." Excluding a few tracks near the end of the album, all the songs are dancy but not extremely catchy. Killer/Lover sounds like an ambient dark night on drugs. They grow on you eventually because their guitar is raw, just like The Rapture and although Blake isn't the best singer in the world, his vocals that were recorded (probably after 300 takes) sound perfect on the album.

4 out of 5 stars Moving in a Different Direction.......2006-02-18

I picked up this album after I heard that they were coming to Des Moines to open up for one of my all time favorite bands, Nine Inch Nails. I figured, hey, Trent has a good ear for musical talent, after finding great talent out there like Manson, Prick, and Pig, so how could he go wrong with Moving Units? What an unusual pick, if you ask me. This band seems like a new wave ska band that was somehow transported to the present time from the eighties. Not that that is a bad thing. They have really catchy hooks, and after a couple of listening, they really grow on you. Not my favorite band by far, but definately not a bad one either. Spectacular tracks on the album include "Anyone and Scabs". Give it a listen. They just might grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars Dangerous Dreams - Moving Units.......2005-08-02

i guess you could put this band into the retro-rock phase that's taking over right now but i don't want to.
even though, moving units have some of that retro-rock flavor, they also surprise you with their bass lines and songs that could be played in clubs. all in all, after listening to their EP (which is very good as well!) this is a CD that does not disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars yeah yeah!...(no.).......2005-05-31

With a vocal delivery full to the bursting point with "ah ah ah"s (recalling none other than the Count from Sesame Street), overly busy basslines, and overt influences-du-jour, this album drags and disappoints. Too bad, "Between Us and Them" is a catchy tune -- it might even snare you into buying this CD like it did me. It will gather dust on your shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2005-05-07

Good CD. "Between Us and Them" is a great song, and I disagree with the reviews that this just copies the other NY dance-punk bands. I think it's a lot better than the Rapture and so on, and it's more catchy and less fake-funky. It's a little repetitive, but I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure of brit/pop music.......2006-03-19

Dangerous Garden is really a good example of little-known bands, with lyrics and rithms beautifully crafted and highly addictive for those who like this genre.
These guys and gal master the brit/pop style, and cleverly mix it with celtic touches, all of which provides a nice blend.
This is their first release, enough to realise about their quality and trends. If you like it, don't miss their second piece of work "Frogs for Snakes".
And by the way, they're from Uruguay, a small Spanish-speaking nice piece of land in South America, between Argentina and Brazil. This makes their spin-off even more valuable.

This is an excellent album if you like pop/rock and celtic music. If you like U2 or The Verve this is the perfect CD to buy.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As good as the first!.......2007-07-15

In 1973 Lou Reed's Berlin messed up my mind permanently. The idea that rock and roll could convey darker and less wholesome imagery wasn't a new idea by any means. But Reed took it a step further and only now is the work truly appreciated. So when I first heard Mood Swing by the Nails I heard echoes of Reed's Berlin (and a hell of a lot more) in the music and lyrics. The band simply wiped the floor with anything happening at that time in the eighties (Madonna, Prince and Culture Club to name a few). Marc Campbell's vocals were reminiscent of so many great singers but entirely original and his sense of drama was at times comical and harsh. Dangerous Dreams was the follow-up and of course I was eager to see if this band would break under corporate pressure and change their sound. Not only didn't they change they just became even more remote and bleak in their compositions. The powerful bass just thumps along like a lead instrument and the band follows in a flurry of great guitar riffs, plaintive wails on sax and killer drumming. The keyboards, drifting in and out, re-enforce the concept of dreams and holds the whole thing together. Campbell's lyrics and delivery are ghost-like on this recording and just works perfectly. I could do a track-by-track analysis but you should just buy the disc and experience it yourself. You'll wonder what you were thinking about in the 80s to have missed this!
