5 out of 5 stars Anyone who can't be moved by these songs.................2007-02-18

Anyone who can't be moved by these songs..........can't be moved. This is Freddy Fender at his best. My 5 year old grand daughter has been listening to him in my car on the way to school for about a year. She practically starts singing before the car is turned on and she knows all of the words. She will carry on my love for Freddy through at least another generation.

5 out of 5 stars Tex-Mex superlative!!!.......2006-03-27

I've loved Freddy's style since I first heard him back in the seventies. His versions of Secret Love and Roses are Red are the best. I really love the Spanish versions after the English and vice-versa. Freddy is a real Mexican-American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2001-01-04

Before the Next Teardrop Falls; Wasted Days and Wasted Nights; Roses Are Red; I have so many memories of sitting in the back seat of the car and singing along in my best Freddy Fender voice. Drove dad crazy, but those songs and Freddy's unique voice remind me of some of the most special times in life. It may be a Southwest thing, but this music gets into your soul and on these songs I feel like I am feeling part of Fender's soul as well. If you've never listened, REALLY listened, to Freddy Fender, give him a chance!

5 out of 5 stars I am the shadow on your skin and I'll be gone very soon.......2007-04-04

Think of cold, smooth ice. And imagine a warm, shimmering light appearing just under it.

That's what comes to mind with Husky Rescue's exquisite debut album, "Country Falls." The Finnish group reflects their chilly Helsinki winters with equally chilly pop, but filled with sunny warmth, as if on the first day of spring. Basically imagine Sigur Ros playing folk-pop.

It opens with a gentle stretch of shimmering synth, and a mellow little folkpop tune. "Sweet little kitten on the porch sleeps in the sun/The sunbeams climb up on the wall," Reeta-Leehna Korhola sings in a slightly breathless, wispy voice. "Small girls with sun warm hands cuddle bring him milk/then run after make castles in the snow/Jokers juggle in the air rainbow colored fountains of sugar waters flow..."

They dip into psychedelic pop in the kitschy, colorful "Summertime Cowboy," with all those whipcracks and jangling bells. But then they're back to the icy, sparkling sound of the first song -- ambient balladry, glitchy experimental tunes melting into creepy ballads, and little mellow guitar tunes that are smothered in shimmering, sparkling synth.

This edition also comes with an extra DVD, which contains three music videos. "New Light of Tomorrow" is a spare, eerie video, with a young man having a vision of a spacesuited angel, while "Summertime Cowboy" is a kooky, neon playground. And "City Lights" is a shifting video of a young woman carried away by a love song on the car radio (come on, we've all done it), who has a dream of herself dancing in green fire.

Husky Rescue is the brainchild of Marko Nyberg, who apparently wanted to make expansive, warm music to counter the cold up in Helsinki. So he collected around twenty musicians to make the right sound for "Country Falls" -- and the result is so cohesive in sound, it almost sounds like a concept album.

Almost every song is based on a little guitar melody. Sometimes Husky Rescue dip into catchy electric riffs and solid drums (like in the poppy "Summertime Cowboy"), but usually they stick to gentler, folkier material with the odd droning riff here and there, and the occasional burst of murky drumming..

And they're all wrapped in delicate layers of shimmering synth, which sound like a soundtrack for the Northern Lights. Sometimes they're glitchy, gurgly or tinkly, and sometimes they're epic sweeps of sound. And they're interspersed with devilish little laughs, robot voices and ambient sweeps of exquisite sound.

Really, that would be enough to recommend this album in itself. But it's topped with vocals from two artists: Korhola's pretty, slightly breathless voice, and Nyberg's slightly stilted, distant voice. Both of them sing songs of warmth, hope, "cotton clouds," lullabies to a "tiger," and the sweet plea, "Would you treat me right if I am kind/Would you like me more if I can smile/Would you set on tears if I start to cry/Would you take me there last one more time?"

"Country Falls" is an exquisite mixture of folk-pop and electronica, and it sounds like the end of winter when the spring sun starts to shine. Absolutely astounding.

4 out of 5 stars These guys are brilliant.......2007-02-23

I was shown Husky Rescue by a friend and I swore they'd be a one trick pony after hearing 'Summertime Cowboy' (their single at that time). But 'Country Falls' is a complete work and it's a memorable one too. I am usually the last one to like 60s-era psychodelic trippy alt/rock, but there's an undeniable atmosphere and warmth to 'Country Falls' that makes it instantly addictive. Whatever tracks sound disposable at the beginning of your experience will certainly grow on you if you give them the chance to.

It's definately a journey album, so if you like radio cuts and quick hits, you might not like this one as much. But if you have the time and patience to listen to entire albums, I highly recommend it. Otherwise you might just find one or two standout tracks, and I guess it can work like that too. But do yourself a favor- find a pair of headphones and listen while you're at work, or sprawl out on your couch at home and put it in.

I've had the pleasure of seeing these guys live, and they're even more polished.

5 out of 5 stars NORDIC WARMTH.......2006-05-05

Ice. That is what I think of while listening to the music of Husky Rescue. Nonetheless, its extreme coldness cannot but emphasize an intriguing beauty. Below the surface, there is a world of deep blues and whites, as seductive as mysterious. You cannot help but elude it. You cannot help but touch it.

I find categories terribly boring, and classifications are perfectly useless. I would never label an artistic expression. And still, I dare to say "Country Falls" is full of fascinating melodies, melancholic sweetness, and the most brutal and honest minimalism.

When I listen to "New Light of Tomorrow", one of my favourite songs, I can feel the warmth of fire on my face, and the silky caress of wool on my back. "The Good Man" is sad, pathetic and cruel. "My World" is an explosion of neon lights, a moment or pure catharsis. "Mean Street" is inquisitively touching.

Go deep into a world of polyhedral and towering beauty. Listen to "Country Falls", and die of pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Creative, Moving, and Mellow...ish.......2006-04-23

The music does a great job of creating a mood, is not just "a nice melody and a catchy chorus" type of songwriting, you can really get drawn in. Most tunes are mellow, as others noted, but there's some sonic violence going on in parts. The variety from song to song is notable-- numerous styles used.

Sigur Ros is similar in that this has a fair amount of electronica and atmospherics, but these guys are wider-ranging in style and are a bit more folky/rock-oriented. Actually, reminds me a lot of my fav band, Pink Floyd, because of the style range, creativity, and emphasis on atmosphere/mood.

I enjoy every tune, but New Light of Tomorrow, City Lights, Mean Street, and My World are the best. I got this CD about 6 months ago and have been hooked since-- is my favorite CD of the last couple years by anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Like Sigur Ros, but with lyrics.......2006-03-10

This is an ecletic, atmospheric album from up-and-coming Finnish band, Husky Rescue. Finland, of long winter nights and continuously sunny summer days, evokes the same extremes of music from this band. 'Summertime Cowboy' and 'City Lights' are excited, irreverent centerpieces to the album, vestiges of bright, shiny summers past and promises of more to come; 'New Light of Tomorrow', on the other hand, bundles you up in sub-zero instrumentals and vocals like a chilling wind just outside your window.

For fans of Sigur Ros, this is a must. For fans of music lovers, you can do a whole lot worse.

Volume 18 is the only one of the first 24 Dick's Picks to feature music from 1978, culling from two (maybe three) February dates in the Midwest. Following an artistic peak that lasted most of the 1970s, the band sounded more ragged and raucous in 1978 than they had during the previous few years, trading in some of their more textured, willowy tendencies for greater aggression and abandon. The centerpiece here is the half-hour "Scarlet"/"Fire" from the Cedar Falls, Iowa, show, which is followed soon after by an explosive "Other One" and emotional "Wharf Rat." Throughout, Garcia's guitar work is as adventurous and bold as ever, and though the band as a whole is beginning to fray a bit, it does serve to heighten the sense of adventure. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rowdy! .......2007-02-10

Loud and festive! The boys came out smoking and wailed nicely. Good clean sound also.

5 out of 5 stars Disc Three changed my life forever........2006-12-13

Bad News and Good News

First, the bad news: I'm not a huge fan of the setlist. The Wheel, All over now, Playin'? Eh. Really Bland songs. Also, Jerry forgets a lot of the words. I can't believe he left out the entire last stanza of "Scarlet Begonias", which concludes the whole story. I grudgingly sing it myself every time I listen to it.

Now the good news.
The Scarlet>Fire saved my soul. I kid you not. I was an atheist my entire life and listening to this album's Scarlet>Fire (along with a bunch of other stuff in my life) somehow proved to me God. There cannot be such musical beauty in existence without Love from On High. I listened to it nearly every single day of July 06 and August 06. Cures all ills, the jamming alone, no words needed. Jesus loves Jerry.

Additionally, Eyes and Prophet are hot. Bertha's jam is beautiful. Truckin is not as good as in DP1, but is good for running & such because it is a heavy hitter. Wharf Rat is also a sweet, sweet closer.

In short, this album's Scarlet > Fire obliterates all the album's other flaws. You will not find a more soulful, entire-human-experience-summarizing 29 minutes as the DP 18 Scarlet > Fire.

Signed, Charles Payson Frederick

4 out of 5 stars Three very good performances.......2006-12-02

First of all, This release is NOT from two shows but rather three. The recording dates are 2/3,4&5/78. This is a pretty good collection of songs including most of the highlights from all three. Cold, Rain and Snow, Passenger, and Dupree's are standouts on the first disc. It's a shame they cut Ship Of Fools and the short drums segment off the second disc. Still, disc two is about as good as it gets. On disc three Scarlet -> Fire is one of the best ever and the Truckin' jam is just as great.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best picks... .......2006-10-07

1978 wasn't the strongest year for the Dead. Sure, everyone's heard about May 77, Europe 72, and 73-74. There's plenty of DP from those tours.

This collection taken from a few nights, and is as exciting as it gets. The scarlet->fire is one of the best, easily among my 2-3 favorites. But, all the other music is great too. And, in this collection, the shorter tunes are nicely done as well. I love the Cold Rain and Snow, and the Trickin' jam is a blast.

One of my favorite Dick's Picks.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to this!.......2006-05-20

Great collection. Personal faves (this week) are the solos on Bertha and, particularly, Brown Eyed Woman. Jerry's tone is stinging.

Superb 'Eyes' and Scarlet > Fire too.

This (along with Live Dead) is the one I play people who've never heard the band (i.e. 99% of the British public).

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Rockabilly At It's Best.......2000-06-07

How good is this album? Well, it's giving Aimee Mann's "Bachelor #2" a run for it's money as Album of the Year at the (almost) mid-year point. But don't be fooled; this album has very little in common with the New Wave rockabilly of Billy's early 80's output, the country leanings that he has persued since '85's "Try Me" right up thru last year's "All Night Long" or his 90's pop sensabilities with Fleetwood Mac. So how would I classify this album? As flat-out, no-nonsense rock, dressed up with an earthy roots/rockabilly sheen. Mind you, Billy has never sounded better, both musically and vocally. There's an all out, no-holes-barred energy to this release that has not been there in the past. Said energy is evident on the lilting "What A Woman Feels", the barn burner "Life And Death" and the sly toetapper "Got A Little Rock In My Shoe (Can't Stop)". Other strong cuts include "Love Me Back" and "To Get Next To You". The only sour note for me on the CD is "Highway Of Love", a semi-duet with Bekka Bramlett; it just strikes me as an outtake from 1997's (very!) weak "Bekka and Billy" CD. I would have much rather had a killer ballad with Christine McVie along the lines of 1985's "It Ain't Over" or the 1990 Fleetwood Mac gem "Do You Know", one of the best "undiscovered" recordings of the last twenty-five years. But that's nitpicking. This is a great album, full of hip-shaking, boot-stomping (and we're talking black, greasy, leather engineer boots vs. armadillo cowboy ones!) rock. Don't let this one slip thru the cracks!

5 out of 5 stars Great new Billy Burnette CD.......2000-06-07

I really like this CD. It's just really fun to listen to. My favorite songs are "Love Me Back," "(Can't Stop) Got a Little Rock In My Shoe," and my very favorite: "Too Much Information." Take a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Rocks!.......2000-05-17

Billy Burnette's new album sound like it was recorded by his famous father and uncle. In fact Billy dedicates the recording to Dorsey and Johnny.

For those of you who were expecting a country album, think again. This album rocks from beginning to end and even includes backup vocals from the inimitable Bekka Bramlett who partnered with Billy on their one and only album strangely titled "Bekka & Billy".

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The songs of Townes Van Zandt are destined to be for folk artists what the works of Gershwin are to saloon singers. The likes of "Pancho & Lefty," "If I Needed You," and "To Live's to Fly" are the quintessence of troubadour music, thanks to the somber grace of the late Lone Star legend's language and the engaging simplicity of his melodies. Poet gathers a talented assortment of Van Zandt contemporaries and apostles to pay tribute to the man by lovingly reinterpreting his songs. Steve Earle electrifies "Two Girls" while Billy Joe Shaver tackles "White Freightliner Blues" with similar fervor. "Tower Song," one of the most poignant breakup songs ever written, is revived by Nanci Griffith, and Willie Nelson provides a conversational version of "Marie." Stalwart fans of these gems will always prefer hearing the originals and live versions performed by their composer, but they'll find plenty to respect and enjoy in this lovingly compiled salute. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars sheesh.......2007-06-21

Somebody stole mine and I just came back online to get it again and it's out of print and expensive as all get out. OK, it's also worth it, but . . .

4 out of 5 stars 3-5 stars really, depending on if you are a TVZ fanatic.......2006-04-10

If you have listened to TVZ do his own music exclusively, nothing really will ever compare, and this album may never rise to those expectations. But it will still be a good album for you, one to have for your collection.

But if you like a lot of these other artists from previous work as well as TVZ, this is a great album. After a couple of listens, I have come to like the Cowboy Junkies interpretation the best. It is the most different from the original, but I don't buy these kinds of albums to hear karaoke. The best way to do cover songs is through your own interpretation, not imitation. This is a very good album on those terms.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tribute to America's Poet of Loss and Longing.......2003-12-12

This tribute to Townes Van Zandt could not be more accurately titled: POET. The songs selected for this compilation prove as thoughtfully chosen as the artists who contribute, each emphasizing the power and beauty of TVZ's verse. He is America's greatest poet of loss and longing, as this recording makes apparent. There are few and very minor disappointments here: Cowboy Junkies and Robert Earl Keen offer interesting but ultimately uninspired versions of HIGHWAY KIND and MR. MUDD & MR. GOLD, versions that pale when compared to the originals. Billy Joe Shaver and Pat Haney, on the other hand, virtually seem to channel TVZ on WHITE FREIGHTLINER BLUES and WAITIN' 'ROUND TO DIE respectively, failing, perhaps, to make the songs their own, but capturing the spirit and heart of the originals beautifully. As I write, I listen to Steve Earle's terrific rendition of one my favorite TVZ songs, TWO GIRLS. It occurs to me that Earle gets the balance of this great tune just right, making it his own, while honoring the original. For my tastes, the stand-outs here are by Guy Clark, John Prine, Lucinda Williams, and Willie Nelson. Each of these artists, much like TVZ himself, have voices that could break your heart just reading the phone book. Clark's lovely TO LIVE'S TO FLY, in particular, can leave me blubbering with just a casual listen: "It's goodbye to all my friends/It's time to go again/But think on all the poetry/And pickin' down the line." The respect and love each of these artists feels for both Townes and his work proves evident in every line, every chord. A brief introduction by Susanna Clark (excerpted from the book, SONG BUILDER) reads like a great American short story. Nothing could be more appropriate for a collection like this. With an ouvre like that of Townes, of course, there are bound to be omissions, songs that we know should have but didn't make the cut; let's hope for a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best I Own!.......2003-10-11

This is one of the all-time best CDs I own. I discovered Townes through other artists and through soundtracks -- smatterings here and there that lead me to the gradual realization that he was one of my favorite songwriters. Frankly, I think he's a better songwriter than almost anyone, but a better songwriter than he is a performer as well -- and this album may prove me right. From John Prine's sweet, lazy cover of "Loretta" to Emmy Lou's chilling rendition of "Snake Song" -- pure folky golk. Guy Clark's cover of "To Live's To Fly" beats the Cowboy Junkies' cover (and I LOVE when they do it). There isn't a single track on this album that I don't jones for when I leave it out of the CD changer for a few days. There's a reason the used copies are so expensive!

4 out of 5 stars ... that you don't know what you've got 'til he's gone ?.......2002-08-29

I suspect -- and hope -- that this CD will bring the powerful songs of TVZ to a wider audience. While Townes was the quintessential "songwriter's songwriter", his recordings never reached the wider audience enjoyed by some of the artists represented on 'Poet' .

Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and John Prine -- all heard here-- are household names by comparison. If you like these artists, I would encourage you to give this album a listen. In the past several years I have been fortunate to hear these three artists in live performance, as well as Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Delbert McClinton, Steve Earle, and the Flatlanders. Besides being on 'Poet', what do all of these terrific artists have in common ? Each one of them at some point in their performance said (more or less), "Now we're going to play one for Townes." Anyone who commands that degree of respect in this company deserves a wider audience.

Notable cuts: If there was ever a blacker song written than "Marie", I've never heard it. (Who else could write, "she just rolled over and went to Heaven, with my little boy safe inside" ?) Willie Nelson gives it a powerful, minimalist treatment here. Nanci Griffith sometimes sets my listening ear on edge, but she absolutely nails "Tower Song" here. Maybe I have heard Guy Clark too often in live performance to be objective, but the emotional undercurrents in "To Live is to Fly" are quite moving. Bravo to Lucinda Williams for "Nothing".

Not so notable: Townes' most widely known song, "Pancho and Lefty", is covered frequently, often badly. Delbert McClinton continues that tradition here. Cuts by the Cowboy Junkies and Robert Earl Keene are forgettable.

If you're not familiar with the music of TVZ, this is a terrific introduction by some artists you probably do know. Then treat yourself to the original with "Live at the Old Quarter" (young Townes) and "Rear View Mirror" (Townes sounding nearly bone-tired).

... and if you appreciate TVZ's music, then start listening to Guy Clark, Townes' longtime friend and traveling partner. He's another songwriting master who is still with us. Let's not let another treasure slip away under-appreciated.

The sound of Trigger, Willie Nelson's gut-string guitar, remains one of the most distinctive in all of music. On this affectionate record, Nelson's first all-instrumental affair, Trigger alone takes center stage, guiding Nelson's usual cast of characters through a low-key yet always engaging set. Nelson's playing is, as usual, completely natural and unaffected, tasteful and restrained, a masterful blend of pith, playfulness, and patience. Longtime cohorts such as Nelson's sister Bobbie (piano), Johnny Gimble (fiddle), and Mickey Raphael (harmonica) are sympathetic in support and equally elegant in their soloing. Jaunty in some spots, reflective in others, Night and Day reveals yet another aspect of Nelson's singular artistry. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Night and Day.......2004-05-27

Willie Nelson is a unique individual who plays to his own beat, sometimes several different ones in a single song. He is a great guitarist who happens to feel the rhythm of a song a little more freely than others, and thus is difficult to play with, but his guitar playing is sweet and the tone of his guitar is full for this purely instrumental work. Ten cuts fill this album covering soft jazzy tunes to more upbeat blue-grass-ish/country style. Overall, the tracks are good, played in Nelson's own style. The cover of Django's "Nuages" is excellent, and his cover of "Sweet Georgia Brown" is upbeat with good solo work. Nothing stands out as amazing, but Nelson provides a good mix of jazz and country. A fun listen, but fairly short.

5 out of 5 stars Willie and band in a purely musical mode... nice!!.......2003-04-05

A great set of soft, jazzy takes on standards and Nelson favories, with Willie and band revelling in the sheer love of music. When he gets going on upbeat numbers such as "Sweet Georgia Brown," Willie may blow your mind with a few dazzling, Django-ish runs. Turns out the boy really can play! If you enjoy his vocal work on similar material (such as the "Stardust" album), then this disc may be both a delight and a revelation. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhh...........2001-12-04

This is essential Willie Nelson music. I will always be a die-hard, number one, Willie fan in terms of his singing but the instrumental music here is a treat - true "ear candy." All I can say is "Ahhhhh..." Just great music for work, a rainy day at home, any time at all. Thanks, Willie!

4 out of 5 stars Warm and Gentle Willie & Friends.......2000-08-31

For those who love the sound of Willie's guitar playing - this alblum, an instrumental, provides a lot of pleasure. The alblum's tone is warm, subdued, big-hearted, content. To see how warm and together the sound is, compare Willie's version here of "Bandera" with the much more stripped-down and low-budget sound of the same song on "Red Headed Stranger". Red Headed Stranger's tone evoked quiet evenings around a Western campfire, this alblum puts one in mind more of a mellow jazz club in New York.

I think the alblum could have benefitted from some "mores": more songs, more minutes of music per song, and especially, more playing by Willie. He is a gracious host to his band-mates here, but few of the solos by the others are as memorable or enjoyable as Willie's always tasteful and understated guitar playing.

I think the alblum could also have benefitted from a more consistent mood. I especially liked the contemplative feel of the first and second numbers as well as the aforementioned "Bandera", but there were one or two uptempo numbers which stuck out like argyle socks.

Regardless, if you love Willie Nelson's music, this alblum is a modest, quiet little gem - perfect to read to, our just enjoy during a quiet evening or Sunday morning at home. Willie Nelson is a national treasure - let's hope he keeps making beautiful, sincere, intelligent music like this for many years to come.

2 out of 5 stars Nice effort, but..........2000-08-29

Bought this album based on a write up in the Wall Street Journal and have to say I was a bit disappointed. A number of good tracks and a number of mediocre ones. The problem is a poor selection of material, not enough Willie and too much of his supporting cast. Johnny Gimble in particular can't really cut it in this type of music.

Album Description

In May of last year, Dirty Linen wrote: "Lang is still firmly rooted in the 60s/70.s John Fahey/Leo Kottke blues/folk/Americana styling that he helped pioneer, and it.s certainly refreshing to hear it being played this well by one of the old masters . . . Let.s hope it doesn't take Lang another 20 years to produce a follow-up." The good news is that it hasn't! Lang returns with his newest work Guitar, a heartfelt romp around the fret-board. The album has 11 new and original pieces penned by Lang including the tributes to mentor and friend John Fahey (Witness to the Messenger). The songs include blues flavored pieces, delicious slide work, and several rich classical flavored pieces. All aspects of this project were produced by Lang, including the edgy cover art and notes. If you love acoustic guitar this is an album you won't want to miss.

4 out of 5 stars bravo, peter!.......2004-09-14

While I missed it the first time (I was 2 when it was released), when I finally came around to the Takoma guitarists in my 20s I was awestruck by the combination of spareness and experimentalism at work in Lang's "The Thing at the Nursery Room Window." And while I enjoyed "Dharma Blues," it felt a little too safe, lacking as it did many of the rootless asides and extended tangents that his debut traded in. Not "Guitar." "Nursery Room"'s rightful descendent, the album strikes a meaty balance between four-square structure and brain-tickling abstraction, playfulness and poise. From the modal opener "Little Cairo" to the Pahinui-esque "After the Fall" to his touching evocation of Fahey in "Witness to the Messenger," Lang is spot on even as he's a little bit off -- a stylistic trait peculiar to the Takoma guitarists as a whole and a big reason why their music was/is so much more rich and soulful than that of the merely technically proficient. A triumphant return.

5 out of 5 stars "American Primitive Guitar" Pioneer: Peter Lang.......2004-07-29

Along with Leo Kottke, Peter Lang is the first son of a style of music developed by John Fahey sometimes called "American Primitive". Lang was discovered by Fahey and his first recording appeared with together with Fahey and Leo Kottke in the 70s on the Takoma label. Guitar is the second album of Lang's since his hiatus 20 plus years ago from the music business. This collection of instrumentals contains some of his most mature and durable work. "Little Cairo" is a slide guitar gem that incorporates a Middle Eastern feel. There is an homage to the late blues guitarist (he taught Dylan to play the guitar), called "Snaker Ray Has Come & Gone" This tune is a compendium of blues styles used by Ray and Lang, and completes a tribute to the man who first motivated Lang to become a performer. It ranges from fast to delicate. Lang was known in the 70s and 80s and one of the premier fast wizards of fingerpicked guitar. He still has speed in his creative tool box, but listen to "All Through My Life". This is a well honed gem that ranges in speed and intensity, but its primary strength is that it is melodically beautiful, richly complex, and moving. Peter Lang has the uncanny ability of a virtuoso that doesn't just dazzle with technique, but has the wonderful gift of turning personal explorations into universally moving experiences. If you are wondering how he compares to fellow Minnesotan, Leo Kottke. Lang plays less aggressively, is more blues oriented than Kottke, consitently plays more melodicly and doesn't use finger picks, which gives him more expressive control of the guitar (acoustic and electric). I am a big fan of Leo's, and the idea of comparing these two greats is silly. If you are a Kottke fan, then you already like the American Primitive guitar genre, and should include many Peter Lang CDs next to Leo Kottke, and consider them as equals.

5 out of 5 stars A Pat Haney and Daylon Wear collaboration!.......2004-02-29

This is an honest work. Haney is gifted with a true simple "in your face" style. Open up the jacket and notice the collaboration with country artist Daylon Wear. The songs Draggin' Green River, Early Fall (which is a beautiful masterpiece), and Follow You are co-written with Daylon. Both of these artists are on the same label (Freefalls Entertainment), so it's no surprise that they ended up working together. I think these two artists should work together again. Haney's follow up album is great, but lacks the honesty that this record has. Pat Haney is a true talent and should be promoted more!!!

5 out of 5 stars Can you say classic?.......2002-07-06

That's right,he's that good. I coudn't help but feel that some day this disc's going to be considered a classic. Like someone else said,he's the real thing, and better than that, his peers regard him in very high esteem. He was asked to participate on Townes Van Zandt tribute disc with the cream of Texas songwriters for a reason. Exellent cd.

5 out of 5 stars Mellow but very good.......2002-02-18

This guy, Jason Boland, Owen Temple, Roger Craeger all represent a fine crop of Texas-type music. Very good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Wrong rite of passage.......2001-05-01

If you like John Prine, you'll love Pat Haney. Haney's album, "Wrong Rite of Passage" is a good mix of country bluegrass & soulful rock. Each song tells a good story. Before it's over the first time through, you'll be singing along, just like you've heard it a 100 times. It's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST OWN.......2000-10-30

Pat Haney's CD WRONG RITE OF PASSAGE is a must own for any collection. The lyrical content of this album will have you so involved that you won't know that the album is over until it stops spinning. With a voice that speaks of pain and too many cigarettes, Haney spills forth songs that will not necessarily have you dancing in the aisles but will have you thinking of things much deeper. So if you don't own the CD buy it now, you will not regret it!

What started out as a chance for Billy Joe Shaver to revisit some of his classic songs ended up as a real Outlaw hootenanny. Recorded over a period of years at Nelson's Pedernales Studio, this Honky Tonk Heroes (now the third record of Shaver songs with that same title) doesn't include the definitive versions of these 10 compositions--those can be found on Waylon's 1973 landmark Honky Tonk Heroes or on the Shaver compilation Honky Tonk Heroes or on singles by any number of country stars who rode Shaver's songs to the charts. Still, these readings have their own unique charms, mostly in the camaraderie and the exuberance of the iconoclastic quartet, not to mention some gritty guitar from Shaver's son (and album coproducer) Eddy. And it's always a treat to hear Willie sing and his guitar Trigger solo over such bedrock American music. If banding with higher-profile friends sheds light on the unjustly unheralded Billy Joe Shaver and his straightforward songwriting genius, then it is a worthy project indeed. --Marc Greilsamer

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars What A Great CD.......2004-01-03

This is just a great CD. Most of these songs were already classics long before this CD came out, but what great versions. I especially like Willie's take on "I'm Just An Old Chunk of Coal."

A few of these songs I hadn't heard before. "Oklahoma Wind" is a stark song about the wickedness and injustice in the world. "We Are The Cowboys" is a more hopeful song about solving all the world's problems.

If you like country music and you don't have this CD, you're just punishing yourself. Why make yourself miserable? Go and get this CD!

    5 out of 5 stars A Terrific CD!.......2001-12-23

I have to disagree with those who found this CD lacking. I think it's a blast to listen to, from first track to last. It has quickly become a standard item in my car's CD changer. Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson are, obviously, two first-rate, gold-plated country stars...Billy Joe Shaver is absolutely fantastic in both singing and songwriting...and I gotta say I dig Kris Kristofferson's froggy voice. If I could, I'd give this CD more than just 5 stars!!!

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2000-06-21

This is such a disappointment! I eagerly await new material from Billy Joe Shaver, and so jumped all over this without listening to the clips. My mistake! This CD lacks energy--occassionally lacks listenability. I'll bet they had great fun making the record, but it sure doesn't show. Shaver captures a Texas state of mind, live and usually on CD--check out "Highway of Life" for the real Shaver, or even "Victory." This is, sadly, weighted down with sloppy vocals and uninteresting interpretations and not worth the trouble.

5 out of 5 stars Fans of these performers will enjoy this........2000-05-03

Willie Nelson,Waylon Jennings,Kris Kristofferson, no Johnny Cash but in his stead Billy Joe Shaver,of whom I had known very little, and his compositions.Could work as a fourth "Highwayman" album and with justification. The opening track"Honky Tonk Heroes" does not disappoint although I preferred the original "Outlaws" version. I disagree with the reviewer who thought Kris Kristofferson,s voice had gone I enjoy his distinctive gritty, earthy vocals....as do the individuality of all the "Heroes"and especiallyWillie Nelsons rendition of "I,m Just An Old Lump Of Coal" which was just superb and top drawer Nelson as was the "Heroes" version of "Willie The Wandering Gypsy And Me " For me the entire album is enjoyable, the beginning to the epic "Oklahoma Wind" ; the romantic yet humourous "I Could,nt Be Me Without You " to the finale of "We Are The Cowboys" which would definately not have been out of place on any " Highwaymen "set from start to finish. Fans of any of these performers will know what they expect and like me I,m sure thet will not be disappointed, not a bad track and a few that could compare with most.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good overall.......2000-03-11

First of all...if you do not have Waylon's 1973 "Honkytonk Heroes" CD...go get it before you buy this. This CD is fine - and at points it is really very good. But I think it would have worked better as a Waylon & Billy Joe album or a Willie & Billy Joe album...Kris Kristoferson voice is just gone. Many of the songs are rolling along fine, until you hear Kristoferson's mumbled and garbled singing. He was never a crooner, but his voice has not aged well to boot. On the other hand, Willie, Waylon, and Billy Joe all sound great.

I don't think these are the best versions of these songs, but it is worth a listen and certainly better than much of what is created in country music today.
