When an artist signs a million dollar deal to a label nearly immediately after sending them a demo tape, the music industry stands up and listens. When the Winnipeg-based Kreviazuk takes her show on the road, her audience stands listening in awe. An incredibly powerful debut, the pianist/vocalist provides lyrics both eloquent and cathartic in tracks like "Grace" ("Please don't go/without you I am weak/find myself drinking and sinking and seeking") and "Wayne" ("It's crowded and I'm lost in here/I'm trying to find a familiar fear"). Kreviazuk's music--as well as her piano playing--is rich, warm and beautiful, well worth the purchase price. --Denise Sheppard

3 out of 5 stars Lacks staying power.......2007-07-03

When I first got this album as a new release, I really liked it, and listened to it a lot. However, I quickly grew tired of her frail, scratchy voice, and the oft-depressed lyrics that pervade the entire album. After a relatively short time, I simply stopped feeling like listening to it, and haven't ever really felt compelled to go back. I came across some of her songs once in a while on compilation tapes I made when I was listening to her, and I tend to turn the stereo down, or tune out. I've so far resisted putting this into my iTunes library. It's just over.

3 out of 5 stars Good Talent.......2007-03-19

I first heard the song "Surrounded" on Dawsons Creek a few years ago and finally decided to try the album. It's good talent but I'm not falling off my chair like the raves I've heard amongst everyone. There are a lot of talented singer/pianist/writers out there (Try Vanessa Carlton). It's good, though.

3 out of 5 stars Kreviazuk shines brightest on her own.......2005-07-03

No one can deny that Chantal Kreviazuk is incredibly talented. Her voice can be both confident and fragile, her lyrics contain some poetic gems and she masters her piano like no other. So naturally, her debut album could be no other than perfect, right?

Wrong. As long as Kreviazuk is left to her own devices in songwriting, she produces truly beautiful songs. "Surrounded" is a heartbreaking ballad that showcases Kreviazuk's impressive range, while "Believer" is an angry rock song that really packs a punch. "Wayne" shows Kreviazuk's views on innocence and it's fragility and "Green Apples" really is a very sweet love song. If only she could have stuck with these gems.

As soon as she gets some help in songwriting, things go awry. The lyrics become boring, and sometimes even downright silly, like in "Co-Dependent", where one line actually goes like 'but I eat it up like bologna/I can't get enough'. Kreviazuk seems to realize this, because her vocals suddenly become flat and bored, like she isn't even trying. On "Disagree", "Hands" and "Boot, things are not much better.

This album is definitely still worth it's price for the good songs it contains, but it misses out on the five stars because I can't listen to it without skipping a few songs.

4 out of 5 stars a stand-out debut.......2004-04-27

Chantal Kreviazuk is a wonderful talent and this is a smokin' debut. From the well-known opening track on, you'll be hooked to her playing and singing.

5 out of 5 stars Good but, Not Christian Music.......2004-03-12

I found this cd when I was searching for some new up-and-coming Christian artists. Since it was found in my search and since some of the track titles have religious meaning, I assumed that Chantal was a Christian artist. Not so. The music is good and I'm sure she's talented if you like the "let's wallow in self-pity" emotional drama type of stuff. Just didn't want someone else to buy this thinking they were getting a Christian CD, and I'll check discography on unknown artists next time. Even though I didn't like this CD, I gave it 5 stars so that I wouldn't mess up the rating just because I bought the wrong cd. Cheers to all!

Japanese Version featuring a Bonus Track

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A CD for fans and collectors.......2000-07-20

I would recommend buying this CD in addition to the US release of "Under these Rocks and Stones". Not only are there four bonus tracks, the packaging features completely different photos and a better layout. Leaving on a Jet Plane (the final bonus track) was performed better by Peter Paul and Mary, but Chantal is much more personable, and has more fun with it.

5 out of 5 stars kudos_2u@mailcity.com This is my favorite CD of all time!.......1999-12-26

I love Chantal Krevaizuk! anyway_this cd rocks it has both the song's from her first cd plus the song from Armgedeon "Leaving on a Jet Plane" a remake from Peter Paul & Mary. She has such an impact on her listeners that's its astounding, she is one of those very rare true artists! She has it all a voice/lyrics/piano prodigy. She recently was also married. CONGRADULATIONS!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully unique voice delivering original music.......1999-11-20

Chantal deserves much more recognition and airplay than she gets. Her voice is superb, sincere and original and her songs are powerful. I believe her record company is not doing a great job in marketing her in USA. If people would actually get to hear her music she would climb the charts despite the fact that this is not an artist made by a cookie cutter.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing...........1999-09-21

From the minute i heard the first track i was liostening to the whole album over and over. Her amazing piano playing along with her beautiful voice really makes her music so powerful. The cd is permanantley in my machine, i'm completely hooked. I cant wait for her next album!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent album, full of feeling.......2004-06-09

This debut album from Canadian Chantal Kreviazuk reminds one very much of 'Little Earthquakes' from Tori Amos; there's a powerful voice that can range from sultry to angst filled, There's well played piano present through the bulk of the tracks and there's really strong feeling in the lyrics and tone of the various songs. Chantal isn't an Amos clone, though - she finds her ground quickly and offers a number of well formed tracks starting with the upbeat 'God Made Me' to those that convey greater emotion ('Surrounded', for example, talks about the real life suicide of a friend of hers). Wholly recommended for fans of strong female singers.

5 out of 5 stars Winner.......2003-10-30

Wonderful album. Great, sensative lyrics, but with a sense of humor as well. Hell of a voice too.
