Days of the New hit with the singles "Touch, Peel and Stand" and "Shelf in the Room." But they were a band in name only, and when singer Travis Meeks dumped his bandmates, it was a blessing in disguise for the musicians. Now, ex-DOTN members Todd Whitener (guitar), Jesse Vest (bass), and Matt Taul (drums) have a stellar, if sometimes mumbling, singer in Hugo Ferreira, and as Tantric, carry on the heavy acoustic-rock tradition they started in DOTN. Overall, Tantric's dozen-song debut is rather linear, with many of the songs more vibe-y than distinctive, though there are a few standouts. While the disc's first single, "Breakdown," is spare, midtempo, heavy-mellow, and typical of the album as a whole, departures include "Frequency," with its faster, angrier approach, and "Paranoid," with a cool fuzzy bass tone and ominous vocal delivery. The classical guitar stylings and diverse and welcome vocal inflections make the lighter and dynamic "Hate Me" likeable, while the complexities of "Revillusion" also add interest. Ultimately akin to a less dour Alice in Chains meets Creed, Tantric's solid songs are certainly the radio sound du jour, and possibly of tomorrow as well. --Katherine Turman

    Album Description

This once in a lifetime event gathered musicians from wildly different backgrounds in a benefit for Richard Gere's Healing The Divide Foundation. Recorded live at Lincoln Center in NY, this CD features transcendental performances from Tibet's Gyuto Choir, India's Anoushka Shankar, genre-bending duets from Tibetan avant-garde musician Nawang Kechong with Native American master R. Carlos Nakai, and maverick composer Philip Glass with Gambian virtuoso Foday Musa Suso. The concert closer is a unique collaboration between musicians who personify the spirit of adventure in contemporary music, as Tom Waits performs four of his classic songs accompanied by Grammy winners the Kronos Quartet. Add a moving opening address by the Dalai Lama and you have the perfect musical embodiment of the Foundation's mission: to bridge cultural gaps and forge revolutionary new bonds between people around the world. Proceeds from sales will be directly applied to projects benefiting the peoples of Tibet and the Himalayan region.

Nothing can prepare the uninitiated for the shocking sound of Tibetan throat singing, and these two liturgical pieces, each clocking in at near 25 minutes, are among the best, and most chilling, examples. The Gyuto Monks, in exile in India since the annexation of their native Tibet, have developed a tradition of singing that involves producing the lowest possible notes in the vocal range while simultaneously singing high overtones. The resulting sound suggests a symphony of inspired bullfrogs whose passion is Buddha, not Budweiser, croaking endlessly while rotating a wet foot around the perimeter of a giant wineglass. Which is a pretty mundane metaphor for music that produces such a powerful sense of dread and spiritual awe. Track 2 also includes clattering drums, some made of human crania. Spice Girls it ain't.... --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars IF YOU MEDITATE.......2006-03-16

IF YOU MEDITATE OR EVEN LIKE CALM AND RELAXING SOUNDS YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD. I USUALLY PUT IT ON FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHEN I ARISE TO MEDITATE AND THEN TO REVIEW MY DAY. THIS CD IS BOUND TO RELAX AND SOOTHE THE RESTLESS SPIRIT. IN THE EVENING BEFORE RETIRING I AGAIN LISTEN TO THESE ENCHANTING SOUNDS TO PREPARE FOR A DEEP SLEEP. THE VOICES OF THESE MONKS ARE INCREDIBLY COMPLEX, CAPTURES ONES COMPLETE ATTENTION AND IS TOTALLY ENJOYABLE.

4 out of 5 stars Not available per song on iTunes.......2006-02-22

I have much enjoyed this and the "Freedom Chants from the Roof of the World" recordings of the Gyuto Monks (this one being my favorite). A correction: this music is sold as an album on iTunes for $9.99. The songs aren't available separately, and you are only getting the bitrate and format provided by iTunes. If that meets your needs, then you might try it out. I for one buy the CDs and rip them myself.

    5 out of 5 stars Shastro's Tantric Heart.......2006-08-14

I was first exposed to Shastro on Public Radio Broadcasting's Echoes. I immediately went to amazon to order Oasis Nights. This music is so uplifting and diverse. Tantric Heart lives up to its' name "Music for lovers" It is more mellow and hypnotic than the faster paced and uplifting Oasis Nights. Though the mood of these two are quite different I love them both. Shastro has shown me he is not only talented but also capable of diverse compositions.

    4 out of 5 stars I'm a Fan! Nothing more, Nothing less!.......2005-09-17

I'm a Shastro Fan. This is my 3rd CD from him. I do enjoy his music, and the way it puts me into a more relaxed state of mind. Out of the 3 CD's I own, I'm still hooked on Bandole'. ** The only downside I could think of to warrant any such review of this particular CD is that it seems to end too quickly. :^) ** I sensed an Indian, Middle Eastern flair which was nice couple with his own unique rythyms. ** I will eventually have heard or own all of his works. As with any artist, sometimes there are those works that may or may not be as memorable as other works. But still, they are signatures of the ones making them, and I am a Fan (of Shastro). I enjoy his music as background, or when driving, or just looking for a wonderful experience within. Beside this one and Bandole', the other CD I have is Malimba Moon. ** I rated this a 4. The other 2 were easy 5's.

    5 out of 5 stars A great new-age CD.......2004-07-08

Probably the only dedicated "new age" music I actually love. It has a singular quality that lifts it above the field: subtlety. As peacefully fulfilling as a thunderstorm, if that makes sense to anyone. Five stars.

    5 out of 5 stars a great CD.......2002-08-25

This is a great CD for driving (you can't get stressed when it's playing), romance, or just relaxing yet upbeat background music. I absolutely love it. The exotic instruments blend perfectly with the subtle vocals. Very sensual!

    5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2007-04-06

Pulled out this CD yesterday and became amazed all over again. This is a first class production all the way: great writing; impressive musicianship and vocals; painstaking mix and production; and good variety of songs without deviation from the group's core sound. This one's up there with the first Pearl Jam CD, Nevermind, and other great CDs - where almost every cut is a winner. This one is truly better than most "greatest hits" compilations. If you enjoy bands like Alice In Chains, Perfect Circle, Creed, Ra, Shinedown, Nickelback, etc. and you don't have this CD, there's a big hole in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Edgy, moody, engaging disc that combines hard rock w/ the unplugged sound to great effect........2006-12-09

The first Tantric song I heard was "Mourning", playing over the closing credits of an obscure Val Kilmer film called "The Salton Sea". The song blew me away and I rushed out (maybe not rushed", but...) and got the album. For me, it is one of those I can put on and rock out to all the way thru.Tantric (their very interesting story is well-documented) is a band off the Alice in Chains tree (a great tree BTW) that captures both the edge, as well as the folkier, acoustic sound AIC landmarked on "Jar of Flies" (deep voiced lead singer, penchant for minor harmonies, etc...). But Tantric has its own "sound" and vibe, with the herky, jerky guitar hooks wrapped around fine lyrics and vocals, and transcends its predecessor (DOTN) by leaps and bounds. Highlights for me are Breakdown, Mourning & Hate Me Now. Always nice to find a diamond in the rough - the 2nd disk is very good as well.

    1 out of 5 stars Weakness.......2006-10-24

This album is pathetic. I had heard that these dudes totally rocked even without Travis Meeks . . . WRONG! No originality, sounds more like a "pop-rock-play-by-numbers" for an otherwise generic band. Glad I bought mine used.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best - sure to be a classic !.......2006-05-10

This is an excellent CD - even if, you never heard them ~ just get this one ! You"ll be glad you did ! Great rockin' tunes !

5 out of 5 stars Reminds you of Days of the New? It should...........2005-12-18

When I bought this album, it was on a total whim. I picked it up from the bargain bin of my area BX because I liked the cover. After sitting in my truck dumbfounded on how good it was, I said to myself "boy, they sure sound a lot like Days of the New. I wonder whatever happened to those guys?". How was I supposed to know that this band was made up from the musical remnants of Days of the New? I love this album after only a few listens. The lead singer's voice is great, the songs pull you in, and there's enough variety to keep every song from sounding the same (kind of like DOTN albums started to get). It's got a bit more heaviness to it than any of the DOTN albums ever had, and there's some electric peppered in here and there. Granted, you'll never mistake these guys for guitar geniuses, but "Astounded" is amazing, and I didn't realize "Breakdown" was a radio hit until I popped it into my CD player. I hope they continue to explore their music together and grow as a band, because if this first album is any indication of what's to come it's going to be one hell of a ride.

I got bored with Days of the New after only a few months of listening to their albums. I can't see the same happening with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding for tantra or meditation.......2005-07-08

The unique aspect of this album is the underlying steady beat... a single rhythm extending from beginning to end, and at a perfect pace for breathing meditation or tantric lovemaking. In fact, this album is so well crafted for those purposes that it's hard to imagine using anything else. I've not found its equal (though Al Gromer Khan's "Tantra Drums" is in the right ballpark). If anyone can recommend a CD with a similar, slow, steady, visceral beat and well suited to meditative or tantric practice I would love to hear it. Until then, BUY THIS CD!

5 out of 5 stars Want to connect on a higher level in Tantric sex? Get this!.......2005-04-01

My boyfriend and I are exploring Tantric. I listened to the tracks and was immediately hooked. Never had we experienced anything both sexual and spiritual at the same time. We managed to connect on a level neither of us have ever experienced before and has made us closer to each other. The music is fabulous meditation as well. Brings you down gently, effectively and makes meditation very rewarding and easy. I highly recommend this one. It has now become my favorite.

    5 out of 5 stars Love Music!!!.......2003-10-02

If you are looking for romantic music with an excellant exotic rhythm. Music that does not demand attention, but is gentle, unobtrusive, and sensual then this is the very BEST!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Sensual CD for Massage.......2003-09-18

This CD is incredible if you need sensual and erotic background music for a bodywork session. I do bodywork only on other professional bodyworkers...and music is frequently part of our discussion....to a person, every other professional I have worked on has asked where to buy a copy of this CD after out session. That said, I have listened to this CD hundreds, maybe even more than a thousand times...and i never tire of it. I have yet to find anything that equals it for tantric / erotic overtones.....if anyone has any suggestions, though...I would like to know of them...

By way of comparison...my other current favorite CD for body work with a less sensual ambience is "The Hours Soundtrack" by Phillip Glass. Wonderful pace, rhythm and instrumentation....this CD will lend an emotional feel to any session...so use it carefully if you are doing deep tissue work on some people...

5 out of 5 stars For Ya Lova.......2001-05-25

Joshua is a pioneer in the field of world music, creating a synthesis of east and west. His music is perfect for both meditation and celebration. Sky Kisses Earth is a ticket to the ancient Tantric temples of India. Effortlessly, Prem Joshua blends the magic of Eastern music (Sitar, Tabla, Flutes, Santoor, etc) with transparent and modern Western sounds. These hypnotic grooves, fine textures and rich melodies will transport the listener to a cross cultural mythic land of golden radiance.

WOW, WOW WOW!!!! Need I say more. I've never ever listened to anything so melodious and beautiful like Sky Kisses Earth. The music is amazingly soothing and absolutely fantastic. Several of my friends loved it. Would have given 10 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Original, deep, very beautiful.......2004-12-09

I'm wary of europeans playing Indian music and raga fusion. It usually sounds fake. But, not this! It's a balance of East and West that works, and transmits a genuine expression of the heart. It has variety, sophistication and surprise.

4 out of 5 stars A different flavor compared to his previous works.......2002-11-14

I purchased this album in Bombay, along with Mudra, and I noticed that both albums had a lot in common.

You'll notice a lot more use of keyboards, thanks to his collaboration with Manish Vyas.

My favorite track is the title track - Sky Kisses Earth. Starts off with harmonious voices blended with sitar and santoor and soon the beats kick in... like i said, a new flavor! However, his previous albums like Desert Visions and Hamsafar still remain unsurpassed as far as Im concerned, which is why I give this album a 4.

    4 out of 5 stars Solid follow-up, original style..........2007-05-21

For whatever reason Tantric is compared to many modern rock bands currently on the scene. Personally I think they have a style that is all their own and are a very unique band in today's cookie cutter music market. Their first cd was a solid effort and "After We Go" is an excellent follow-up. I think the song writing has improved on this cd and the instrumentation and melody only add to the strengths of the songs. The band's ability to mix in acoustic guitars only adds to their personal style. The remake of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" was their way of trying to get on rock radio and its probably the weakest track on this disc. I anxiously await their 3rd effort and would recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite albums of all time.......2007-05-09

Ok, maybe thats a little broad, but I think the talent in this album deserves it. It's so easy to string a bunch of power chords together, slap a label on it and market your album, but there is a lot more talent than that here. More than simply stringing together distorted power chords, there is a ton going on at every level here-guitar, bass, and drums. And the vocal harmony (the ONLY part that resembles Alice in Chains) is great, and unorthodox. My girlfriend doesn't like it, and I suspect this is not a "girl band", but I love this album- the music has so much substance.

3 out of 5 stars First One Was Awesome.......2006-10-04

I'm starting to enjoy the songs on this CD a little more with repeated listens. But the truth is, their first CD completely kicks this ones but. This second one is just kinda dull, not bad, just nothing too special. You'de want them to either do one of two things with a follow up to their first Cd: either come up with some more great hits or maintain a cool and unique sound. This second album doesn't do too much of either. BUT GET THEIR FIRST ONE! ITS AWESOME!

4 out of 5 stars The guitars are hot.......2005-07-29

Tantric is hotness with there drums and guitars dude.It totally is.Tantric is not too aic dude,i mean i know that they have some aic comparisions. But tantric has there own sound grooves going on dude. And it's awesome. It totally is because it's hard and crunchy like a potato chip, with crunchy guitars and hard drum sounds.Okay here is my review of the songs:
1.chasing after-dude this is an awesome opener to this cd.This song is probably my favorite one on here. It's like a song you listen to when your on a roller coaster cause it has the fast rocking beat and stuff.I mean i've never been on a roller coaster before but if i was i would want to listen to this song somehow. This song is like a wake you up/Punch you in the face type song.It ROCKS.
2.After we go-this is an awesome song to dude cause todd sings the chorus and hugo doesn't hog it.I personatly think todd sings better than hugo. And todd's guitars are hot in this one too.
3.Falling away-this is a good song because the drums and todd's guitar part in the middle are totally awesome.
4.Hey now-this is an awesome song too because todd's grundgy guitar part in the middle is the hottest thing. It is so cool because it rocks.
5.Hero-this is an okay song, but it's not one of my favorite ones on here.Cause i usually just skip it and go to the next song.
6.The chain-Grundgy,awesome,and full of finesse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.I thought they did a good job on it!!!!
7.Change the world-this is a good song.I think it took me a little while to get into this song but todd's guitars are hott and the drums are hott too.And i totally love todd's singing part when he says ''oh o oh oh''or whatever it is.That part is just so hot and cool to me and i don't know why.Cause i used to did not like it and now i like it more.
8.Just once-dude this song is totally awesome.Todd's guitars are really hott but i don't really like the vocal part at the very end. It's hugo's vocal part thing that he does.
9.Relentless-this song's okay too,but i don't like it that much, but i do like the singing part in the middle where it doesn't have no music in the background.
10.Alright-dude i love the intro to this song it goes like this''1,2,''.Then it goes into the drums. The drums are totally hot and todd's hot ass guitars are hot too.And i totally think the sound thing at the end is totally cool too.Not sure what it is but whatever it is it sounds cool.
11.Before-I totally love the sounds in this song.Don't really know what it is either but it sounds so cool that i don't even care.it's awesome. But this song is just okay to me.
12.Awake-Dude this is another awesome song cause it goes like this''what if the life we new wasn't dead''and i have no idea what the hell that means but ohwell and i don't really like how todd sings the yeah part. But his guitars are still totally hot.And i totally love hugo's thing that he said at the end. When i first heard it i was all like ''that is so awesome''.
So i totally think that if you're a fan of this dude band and there first album that you should totally get this cd.But to me it doesn't have as many really good songs as the first cd does. And i also think that this one doesn't have as much balls as the first one does.So if you want a cd that has more balls get there first one first and then get this one because the first one is a better introduction to tantric and there sound.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs, but too AIC.......2005-05-30

This record solidly avoids the infamous "sophomore slump." It is a well-done but unsurprising follow-up to the group's 2001 self-titled debut.

The album changes little in terms of style: take Alice in Chains, subtract some metal, emphasize the acoustic guitars and add some pop. No song from the new release would seem out of place on the debut.

On the one hand, the music is instantly recognizable as Tantric, and after only one release this is an accomplishment. On the other hand, only AC/DC can get away with releasing the same album more than a few times in a row.

One advantage After We Go has, however, is its more consistent quality. Though there is no track of smash-hit single caliber (like the first record's "Breakdown"), all of the songs are catchy enough to be played on the radio. This contrasts sharply with the hit-and-miss nature of the group's debut.

The only disappointment is the Fleetwood Mac cover "The Chain." A successful cover has to be either (a) better than or (b) radically different from the original. "The Chain" is neither, keeping the original vibe while changing the chorus melody just enough to make it sound wrong.

To the recording's credit, though, it nicely brings out the verse's harmonized vocals in a way that screams Alice in Chains.

The other 11 tracks are full of innovative guitar work, catchy melodies and haunting vocal harmonies. Some standouts are the "Breakdown"-reminiscent "Hey Now," the chilling title track and the heavy "Before."

Hopefully, future Tantric releases will branch out beyond their current sound. Most importantly, they will need to establish an identity free of Alice in Chains references to stay relevant. But After We Go is worth picking up in the meantime for anyone who liked the band's debut.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best .......2007-06-27

I think Samsara is one of the best film ever made. In my opinion, a good movie is one that teach you something, helps your human beeing in evolution, helps you THINKING! And Samsara have a lot of teachings! It is not only about buddhism, it is about life, about the choices we have to make, and more than that, about the way we deal with the effects of our choices. It is always about the big choice : the hard way or the easy way, buth sometimes, it is difficult to know what is good or what is bad for your beeing. Are you strong enough to choose the hard way? No? Than find a way to get stronger, because if you dont do that, samsara (the cycle of reincarnations)is waiting for you!
And the hole movie is fully completed with the original music from Tibet. Most of the music made by a bulgarian born in Paris (:-)) ), played by a bulgarian orchestra, but it is tibetan music! So, if you saw the movie, you will want to have this original soundtrack, and if you buy the music, you will want to buy the movie too. Buy both, there is no price for what you will feel!

5 out of 5 stars A lovely score that works well apart from the film.......2007-05-05

Like the film for which it is written, French composer Cyril Morin's score to Samsara is delicate and beautiful, a subtle aural companion to a story of love and the search for truth. It was Morin's first score for a major feature film, the one that took his career to the next stage after many years composing for European television. Coincidentally, Morin wrote his first score for short film, 1991's Khajuraho, for Indian director Pan Nalin, who 10 years later commissioned the score for Samsara, which was also Nalin's first directorial feature.

Together the two crafted something quite amazing, a Buddhist love story about a monk named Tashi, who leaves the order for Pema, a village girl with whom he settles down to raise a family, only to discover years later that perhaps he should have stayed in the monastery. Titled after the Buddhist word for the world in which we live, the world of the physical and the sensual, Samsara is the story of how we all struggle for enlightenment.

Filmed in India's northeastern Buddhist region of Ladak, the score features many of the sounds and instruments native to that region, including chanting, Tibetan bowls, bansuri, duduk, ney, and Mongolian and Tibetan violins woven into and accentuating the orchestral work, performed here by the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra. Morin's Samsara is one of those unique soundtracks that could exist on its own quite apart from the film for which it was written, a lovely score that rewards close listening, or which can be played unobtrusively in the background.

    Album Description

Popol Vuh's Tantric Songs and Hosianna Mantra are recognized as classics in the field of contemplative music. Popol Vuh has long been praised for their ability to blur the boundaries of time and space through a unique hybrid of ceremonial styles from around the world. Tantric Songs and Hosianna Mantra complement each other perfectly in their creation of modern ritualistic soundscapes. From the evocative, bass chants of `Mantra of the Touching of the Earth' to the primal drumming of `In the Realm of Shadow', Tantric Songs merges traces of classical refinement with feelings conjured up by ancient religious rites. Hosianna Mantra encompasses a series of gracefully understated chants. With pastel piano textures, spacious melodies from guitar and violin, and the angelic vocals of Djong Yun, Popol Vuh distills the sublime nature of Christian liturgical music from the dogma normally associated with it. As critic Keith Armstrong wrote, Hosianna Mantra is "a hypnotic work that leaves its echo on the air...relentlessly drawing one away from one's surroundings and into the space in which thoughts become musical sounds and words are experienced as feelings and nuances."

5 out of 5 stars Lovely to listen to.......2005-10-21

a lovely CD. A couple of slightly repetative songs but a beautiful collection of calming sounds with a great depth of soundspace. Don't be put off by the title. It is not naff and it's a great listen for something a bit different.

    5 out of 5 stars True Ambience.......2004-08-16

Those of you expecting some pencil-necked macrobiotic New Ager doodling on a casio next to a cage full of exotic birds and a couple of running taps - be warned. This monumental work from the Teutonic genius of Florian Fricke is true ambient music - as distinct from most of the ubiquitous aural valium that poses under the dreaded department store moniker of 'New Age/ Ambient / Relaxation. Not that this music isn't relaxing (it can be profoundly so ), but there is a vast textural range here that somehow addresses the more obscure and refined emotions within.
Popol Vuh have been composing haunting soundtrack music for many years - through their fruitful artistic alliance with that iconoclastic German director Werner Herzog - in films such as Aguirre, Nosferatu and Heart of Glass. Tracks 'Kyrie' and 'Hosianna Mantra' are reminiscient of Some of Jerry Garcia's extraordinary electric guitar on the 'Zabriskie Point' soundtrack, while others evoke the timeless, universal longings of the great spiritual traditions - through an impeccable marriage of Eastern and Western instrumentation. I know it's been said ad nauseum in respect of many other albums, but this gorgeous soundscape is truly 'timeless'.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-07-09

Hosianna Mantra has to be one of my favorite albums ever. It's a pity that it, along with the rest of Popol Vuh's catalog, is virtully unheard of in the United States. The songs on Hosianna Mantra are beautiful and among the most spiritual pieces I've ever heard. The 10-minute title track is a standout, combining angelic vocals with piano and watery guitar to great effect. And Departure is one of the more beautiful pieces of music ever, in my opinion. Along with this album comes the later Tantric Songs, a solid but not spectacular effort. The two Angel of the Air songs are very beautiful, however. If you hate New Age-ish music, then you probably wouldn't like this. Not to say that this is New Age, but it is more meditative than most (or all) "rock" music. It's worth checking out otherwise.

    5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2004-01-10

This CD is a brilliant compilation of Popol Vuh's work. I love it! It takes you to a realm outside of space-time, to Tartaros, the shadowy Underworld ruled by Hades. Here you are privy to a preview of the shadowy existence that awaits. But just when despair seems to be too heavy, the light and love of Sons of Light comes through and redeems you. This is the music of transcendence. This is the music of the soul. Buy it now! Hades command you!

    5 out of 5 stars Aaaaaaahhhhh!.......2000-04-05

Hosianna Mantra is truly a wondrous album. The first three tracks (making up the original side one - remember when albums had side one and side two?) are incredible - the woman's voice is orgasmically beautiful and the fluid flowing sublime electric guitar is mystically magical - I never knew an electric guitar could sound that rapturous and carry a melody along so well. The remaining tracks (side two if you're following closely) are more subdued, but again very lovely - some of the best ambient music ever before there was a genre for it. I'm also quite fond (not as much as Hosianna Mantra, but who cares) of Tantric songs - an album from a few years later, that's very peaceful and sedate, yet intense and edgy as well - you can't go wrong with this CD.
