What's most astonishing about Amy Ray's torrid, ferocious solo debut is just how convincingly she wears the colors of the riot grrrl. Save the dreamy acoustic "Lazyboy," the record rages like a showdown at the barricades, with Ray and her cadre of subversives (notably Sugar's David Barbe, Joan Jett, and Southern undergrounders the Butchies and the Rock*A*Teens) tearing into mainstream rock critics, antigay violence, gender stereotypes, and thorny sexual politics--all with the punk brio of Bikini Kill or Hole. If the lyrics can be as strident as manifestos, the waves of ruthless yet melodic guitar rock are never less than urgent, and often exhilarating. Stripped of all earnestness, Ray lets loose an unvarnished rock & roll passion--taking no prisoners and offering no regrets. --Roy Kasten

Stag is adulterated Melvins, which is a good thing. Yes, Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and their bass player of the moment (Mark Deutrom) still pound away to wake the devil. But the trademark metal chuggers frequently give way to surprisingly musical moments. Sitar, trombone, slide guitar, keyboards, and scratches soften the edges of the music. "Lacrimosa" is ambient chopped apart by power chords. Despite its Satanic subject matter, "Black Bock," sounds less like Black Sabbath than the Archies Stag is most appealing when the Melvins betray their roots, and that's about half the time. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Quirky Melvins Classic.......2007-01-04

"Stag" marks the last major label Melvins release, following their two most accessible (and therefore popular) albums of the time, "Houdini" and "Stoner Witch". Those two albums offered very sludgy, dirgy post-grunge type outings, all the time incorporating strong melody and solid structures. With "Stag" the band took a more experimental route, often throwing conventional song structures out of the window, leaving an album that is confusing, yet utterly compelling.

The album starts with a bang, "The Bit" is classic Melvins, full of powerful riffs and contrasts between brooding eerie verses and huge choruses. The album then takes its experimental turn, as from "Hide" to "Cottonmouth" it is difficult to make out any songs with standard structuring. Examples of this include "The Bloat" which starts with some old school slide guitar, then strips down to a sumptuous melodic bass line and some rather contrasting angry vocals. "Black Bock" starts almost like a kindergarten song, but then erupts into a swirling psychedelic closing section, full of lush vocal harmonies and trippy guitars. "Buck Owens" is another confusing song, with twisting rhythm and timing changes, almost like the band is experimenting with a warped take on prog metal. Fans of the Melvins' dirge will not be disappointed here, especially with "Goggles", a thunderous snail-paced tour-de-force of Buzzo's riffing.

Overall if you like grunge/post-grunge/stoner stuff, this album should appeal to you. If you like your music with a deal of experimentation it will definitely be worth your time, but for others who want something a little more straight laced, you'll be best to stick with the more accessible Melvins work, such as "Bullhead", "Houdini" and "Stoner Witch".

4 out of 5 stars Melvins is my friend.......2006-01-20

I know Melvins personally, they are my very good friends.

I came up to Buzz at a show, and I said "You are my friend." to which Buzz replied "I concur. We are very, very good friends.". He then proceeded to tell me how the next album would be dedicated to me alone, his very, very, very good friend.

This is that album.

All you Melvins out there have me to thank for this album. My fraternal bond with Melvins provided them with the inspiration needed to produce riffs. When I hear these friendly riffs I think only of how good of friends I am with Melvins, and how our friendship could possibly equate to a highly successful sitcom about friends and how friendly they all are (toward each other).

5 out of 5 stars crap!it's already oop!.......2005-11-21

i'm glad mine is still in good condition if this thing's selling for $25 used!well worth that much though, tracks like "the bit","goggles",and "bar x..."don't come along every day.this is my 3rd fav of the melvs's stuff!

5 out of 5 stars The best from the Atlantic years.......2005-07-23

This is probably the best album of Melvins' fairly brief career as major label recording artists. The riffs are heavy, but bright and bouncy rather than mired in sludge, and the 'experimental' elements are always hitched to great hooks. 'Bar-X the Rocking M' has a killer trombone solo, 'Skin Horse' is both hilarious and oddly touching, and 'Black Bock' is probably the most surprising track in Melvins' catalogue.

Less radio-friendly than 'Houdini' or 'Stoner Witch', but not nearly so weird as some other reviewers think. If you want Melvins at their most adventurous, try the excellent 'Honky' -- the next record they made after Atlantic dumped them for not selling as many records as Nirvana -- or the legendary 'Lysol' (also known just as 'Melvins' -- the one with the horserider on the front), the only full album featuring Joe Preston (Earth, Thrones). But there's no Melvins record that's not worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This USED!.......2004-05-12

Don't buy from an american seller on amazon.com; they charge insane amounts of money! as you may notice! I don't know why this important piece of the Melvins catalogue is currently unavailable in America, but you can get it at a reasonable price at amazon.co.uk -- do it!

5 out of 5 stars amy ray stands out on her own.......2004-01-15

being one of the biggest amy ray fans in the world, i am surprised to see that i had yet to review this one.

stag is proof that amy ray can hold her own ground both as a musician and a businesswoman. not only did she write and perform all of the songs on the album, but she was the producer and is the CEO of the album's label (daemon). she did all of the mixing and mastering herself. and on tour to promote the album, she did her own driving, teching, and settling. amy is quite multitalented.

the cd itself is out of this world. since its release date in march of 2001, i have managed to wear out six copies of this album. it is that good. her songs are very politically based and have many gender/sexual identity themes. from "laramie," an angry tribute to the town where matthew shepard was murdered to "lazyboy," which very well could have been an indigo girls song, there is not one cut on this cd that is lacking or subpar.

with backing of some friends (but no, not emily saliers) including the butchies, 1945 (a daemon band), rock*a*teens (another daemon band), and joan jett, ray has prooven that she has what it takes to be an indigo girl and to do her own thing stag.

4 out of 5 stars Ripping Off the Mask.......2003-09-06

Amy Ray's "Stag" is an excellent set, diverse in its reach. The opener "Johnny Rotten" has Amy on mandolin in a sad tale of a brother gone wrong. "Laramie" explodes in an angry wash of electric guitar commenting on the crucifixion of a gay man on a fence post, "We hit snow on the road to Laramie, we all heard about that mess, but that town ain't no different than the rest." "Lucystoners" is a great rocker unleashing anger & energy, "Testing 1-2-3 in the marketplace, but it's a demographic base disgrace." "Late Bloom" is a thundering midtempo rocker with a passionate vocal and exceptional melody, "All that time that you were walking the line, well I don't mind, now I know." "MTNS of Glory" rocks vengefully, "Gonna miss being the boy, gonna miss being the man." The CD closes on high note with "On Your Honor," "Put away your hate." Amy Ray is letting loose on this solo set and produces some incredibly emotional, moving rock & roll. This is essential listening for any open-minded rocker. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars I think I'm in love..........2003-09-02

This cd rocks! I picked this album up at an IG concert thinking of cool songs like "Shame On You" and "Romeo and Juliet". What I got was even better. More edgeier beats, more in-your-face lyrics, same emotion driven voice. I can see alot of group anthems coming from this project. My only complaint is the song "Lazyboy". Am I the only person who thinks the whistling is annoying? Yes, the instruments are a tad bit too loud, but to say you can catch a few words is an exaggeration. I understand her just fine. Music fans won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Solo Effort!.......2002-12-05

If you're an Indigo Girl fan, you've come to recognize the Amy/Emily differences: Emily seems to be the softer touch, a bit more humorous, while Amy has the rough edge and seems to go flat-out non-stop. Those expectations play out on "Stag", and they do so without disappointment. Hold on through the weak point of the album, (disappointing because Joan Jett contributed but the tune isn't one of the better ones), and you'll be impressed by the end.

Criticisms are similar to others here: Too short - yep, when the music's this good, you simply want more. The mix hides the vocals - partially true, but that might be due to the harder distorted-guitar sound than the engineer, either way the songs are still great. I'm just hoping this won't be the beginning of the breakup of the Indigo Girls... if I was Emily, I'd accuse Amy of holding out some of the good stuff from their collaborative recording efforts!

    5 out of 5 stars Stag a fork in me I'm impressed!!.......2001-10-28

I've been a fan of Amy Ray and the Indigo Girls since the begining. It caught me by suprise when Amy sucessfully branched out. From the minute I heard the first Hoot n' Hollerin' strains of "Johnny Rottentail" to the pounding ballad "On your Honor", I was hooked. Yes it did seem weird without Emily, but at the same it was captivting to hear Amy's talent showcased in this low-budget, fine, fine LP.

Hang on! After the title track storms out of the chute like a bucking bronco, Jesse Dayton takes listeners on a wild ride across roadhouse country. He swaggers his way through "Tall Walkin' Texas Trash" as if channeling the cocksure spirit of Waylon Jennings (with whom Dayton recorded as a guitarist) and conjures the border cantina atmospherics of Doug Sahm on the accordion-laced "All Because of You" and "Moravia." The album takes a detour with a revival of the Cars' "Just What I Needed," rearranged for fiddle and steel guitar. Best of all is the down-home soul of "Ain't Grace Amazing." Riley Osbourn's keyboards and Carolyn Wonderland's backing vocals add a bluesy strain, while the horn charts on "It Won't Always Be Like This" and "Just to Get You Off My Mind" sound more Memphis than Nashville. With some down-and-dirty guitar powering "Talkin' Bobby Dale's Hard Luck Blues," the album never loses its reckless energy nor compromises its independent spirit. --Don McLeese

I heard a Jesse Dayton track on an Americana compilation two years ago. It was pretty good, but didn't prompt me to run out and purchase a CD. My loss.

This is how country music is supposed to sound. There are a couple of tracks that explore a Stax/Memphis soul sound, but the heart of this CD is Texas honky tonk, amiable, fresh and effortlessly enjoyable. My only complaint...and it's a minor one...this is so polished, I'd prefer a few rough edges here and there.

Greg Wood formerly fronted the Houston "underground" band called Horseshoe, which released at least two albums of amazing alt country in the Old 97's, Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown vein. Greg's solo album was many years in the making. In everything Greg does, you can hear the personal saga of blood, sweat, tears, loneliness, and above all - hope. This album is more lyrical and less spiritual than the Horseshoe releases (King of the World), less rocking and more introspective.

As a songwriter, Greg has few peers in the business. He is as talented as they come. Unfortunately, he's never been able to capture the market in a way to get his music to the masses.

There is no wasted effort here. Jesse Dayton plays guitar and produced many of the tracks. This stuff is better than 99% of what's played on mainstream country radio. If nothing else, someone in Nashville should buy the rights to these songs and make someone a star.

    4 out of 5 stars summertime dreams.......2005-07-16

This album has a crisp, swinging sound thanks to Jesse Dayton's production skills and an excellent studio band including the fabled electric-guitar master Redd Volkaert. Based in Dallas/Fort Worth, Sara Hamilton is an appealing singer whose vocal style falls somewhere between Mary Chapin Carpenter and Lucinda Williams. So do her songs, though closer perhaps to the former's spirit than the latter's. That means familiar themes of romantic ups and downs set to sprightly rock, country, and pop melodies, all professionally accomplished and heard to best advantage, I suspect, in one's car.

The stand-out cuts in my hearing are the opener "Better Than I Used to Be," possibly because my heart and brain melt when exposed to rockabilly radiation. "Back My Way" is nothing profound, but it is one of those irresistible summer songs transformed into pure bliss by Bradley Jaye Williams's cheery accordion. I love the concluding cut, a cover of Memphis Minnie's "Ain't No Use Tryin' to Tell on Me." In fact, I love the fact that Hamilton has heard of Minnie, which means that her roots are more than half an inch deep.

As you listen to the disc in its entirety, you can't help thinking that this is how modern commercial country music ought to sound. Nothing terribly original is happening here, but at the same time everything manages to come together to make you glad to be there.

Jesse Dayton was born in Beaumont, Texas--George Jones country--cut his musical teeth in Austin, moved to Los Angeles to write for film and TV, and recorded this album in Nashville. Therefore it makes sense that his brand of traditional country music is as rich and diverse as it is. Dayton mixes in heartland rock, Tex-Mex, rockabilly, swing, country-folk, and a keen pop sensibility with his Texas-style honky-tonk shuffles and ballads. Guests ranging from singers Mandy Barnett and the Dixie Chicks to stalwart sidemen Johnny Gimble, Floyd Domino, and Flaco Jiminez add color to the proceedings along the way. Dayton's a supple guitarist with strong rockabilly roots, and one wishes he gave his guitar work a bit more room to stretch out here, but it's a minor drawback to an otherwise engaging album. --Marc Greilsamer

If you haven't heard Jesse Dayton sing, you're missing out. And if you like to dance in a circle rather than in a straight line, get this cd. While this album was recorded in Nashville, it's real Texas country. Jesse's been around for a while, but since he's maintained his integrity and written nearly every one of his own songs, he hasn't managed to get his "big break". Yet, everyone who has heard him, knows he's better than everybody else out there on mainstream radio. His vocals have quite a big range, as do his influences. He injects a little bit of everything into his writing including blues, zydeco, dixie, tejano, rock, and especially traditional country. He's neither afraid to have fun or be serious, and you'll appreciate his respect for his audience.
Do yourself a favor and buy this album, then treat yourself to Raisin' Cain (his first) and Tall Texas Tales (the most intelligent of all three). Backed by his regular bandmates Charlie Sanders, Richie Vasquez and Brian Thomas, and featuring legendary artists like Flaco Jimenez and Johnny Gimble this is a can't miss album. My car stereo just wouldn't be the same without it.

4 out of 5 stars The Heart of Texas punk/country/pop.......2005-04-21

Rick Broussard is the Real Deal, a charismatic songwriting and performing whirlwind of a purist whose talent far transcends the boundaries of his Austin, Texas, home-base. I've been seeing his intense live performances in Austin for years, and can laugh in agreement with what one new fan recently said (unironically) after talking with him at a show: "I think I just met a real rock star."

I've always loved the Clash, George Jones, the Beatles, Buddy Holly, and classic punk/pop/country in general, and here it all is in one energetic, tuneful, mesmerizing package---and Broussard wrote the songs himself: "Step Fast," "Good Used Heart," "Angels Cry," and "Blues in the Night" are classics, and the rest of the songs are darn good and goose-bump inspiring, as well. The CD meshes 60s-pop/country/punk/cajun/swing in a completely original, fast-stepping, lyrically-intelligent way---you can hear the influences behind Broussard's work, but are also aware that he's gone a few steps beyond, into his own as-yet uncharted territory.

My advice (and no, I don't know Broussard personally): Listen to this CD and then help get this man out of Austin and onto the international stage. His originality and intensity and quality deserve a much wider audience.

(p.s. You can hear tracks from the CD on the group's home-site: http://www.twohootsandaholler.com/pages/4/index.htm)

    5 out of 5 stars Austin's Finest.......2006-01-18

This is by far jesse's best album yet...do your self a favor and pick up a copy...hell, buy one for a friend even....

5 out of 5 stars True Texas Country.......2001-02-09

These days, it seems a rarity that my favorite "Austin-sound" artists can maintain their edge. Reckless Kelly has completely changed their style, while the Hollisters have lost their best band members (both have lost my interest).

Fortunately, Jesse Dayton seems to improve over time. While Raising Cain had been on my revolving CD playlist for the last four or so years, it has recently been displaced by his newest "Tall Texas Tales". Jesse's music is aptly described as edgy, progressive country. The songs' characters and stories always keep you emotionally involved, and are supported by Jesse's soulful voice.

Catch Jesse in concert if you can. He puts on a great show!!

5 out of 5 stars Snatches of Pink does it again!.......2006-07-24

Stag is yet another beautiful catastrophe from the boys in Snatches of Pink. It's great. what more needs to be said that hasn't been already?

    5 out of 5 stars Essential. .......2006-05-14

Aggressive, arrogant, depressive and downright beautiful, Snatches of Pink's "STAG" is a breakthrough, a totally unique approach that reclaims and updates the Keith Richards style of rock for another generation. One can hear traces of Johnny Thunders, "Exiles"-era Stones, "Tonight's The Night"-era Neil Young, and those downer Aerosmith LPs from the late 70s (the ones recorded as the band was breaking up). What makes SOP's approach so distinctive is that they take these influences, amp them way up and then slow everything way, way down, playing very loose and dirty, so you can hear the complex harmonic churn of the instruments. The production is top-notch, which makes STAG one of those rare records that truly blossoms at high volume. Excellent replay value: this CD stands up to many repeated listens. It's a mystery to me why this band has toiled in obscurity in Chapel Hill NC for the last decade; with work of this caliber, they should be stars.

If you love loud, grungy, messy imaginative rock and roll, then don't hesitate to get this glorious mess of a record.

3 out of 5 stars FOR ROCK LOVERS.......2006-01-12

Amazon have listed the song titles incorrectly so don't go by that. Judge the disc by this review. It is rock. No more, no less. It's a thick, muddy crunch of a record. Very cool. This is not a pop record. Don't get me wrong. I love pop but this disc is some other beast. It requires multiple listens from beginning to end. It's short so that's easy. The first, second and final tunes and best. As a matter of fact, i like to crank the final tune to ear splitting levels while on repeat to get the full effect. You may be asking yourself why only 3 stars? Because that is what it Ranks relative to their other output. The disc is a little work but a lotta worth it. Like i've said before, check out all of MainMan Michael Rank's other releases as solo, Clarrisa, Marat and early S.O.P. It's all good, as the saying goes.
