At first glance, Songs for a Blue Guitar appears much like previous Red House Painters albums, meandering and largely self-indulgent. Eight of the album's 11 songs stray over the five-minute mark (with two more than twice that length), and there are the covers of Yes's "Long Distance Runaround," Ric Ocasek's "All Mixed Up," and Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs." Kozelek may have strange taste when it comes to picking out covers ("Silly Love Songs"?), but on this album he's also showing a commitment and sense of deliberate purpose that I've not heard from him before. Even in the album's centerpiece, the more than 12-minute long "Make Like Paper" that contains a guitar solo that supposedly is responsible for 4AD dropping them, there's not a false move. The song unfolds gently, revealing more facets of itself than the spare instrumentation would seem to allow. The guitar's absolutely delicious Neil Young/Robert Quine/Richard Lloyd crunch doesn't hurt, either. That crunch shows up again in "Long Distance Runaround" and "Silly Love Songs," but the rest of the album is built around a gently arresting acoustic guitar that mirrors the soft-voiced Kozelek. --Randy Silver

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06

Nowadays many classical musicians move to 'cross-overs' between Western classics to exotic works, and Chinese musicians and composers pioneer in cross-overs from Chinese music to Western.
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qin, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.

One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06

One of the most original CDs I've ever heard. This CD is full of incredible music. Yang XueFei plays with sensitivity, creativity and passion.
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.

Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26

I am a classical guitar student, and an over-the-top consumer. So I have a lot (many dozens) of classical guitar CDs. They are for the most part quite good, but they tend to blend. I might be able to distinguish Tennant's Rodrigo or Barrueco's Scarlatti, but too many guitarists play an awful lot of the same repetoire, and they play it quite similarly.

This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

Review of Songs for a Blue Guitar.......2007-06-04

I came across this album, and RHP, pretty much by accident. For the past 10 years, it remains one of my favorites -- as my life changes, and I get older, I never tire of it. And while I haven't gotten into the group's other albums so much, I can say that this particular work -- Songs for a Blue Guitar -- is about as close to being a perfect album as they come. It evokes a melancholy so pure, so powerful, it shakes your soul to the core. The tracks breathe, not being overproduced with too much instrumentation. If I had to take 5 albums with me to a deserted island, this would have to be one of them (and I own a lot of music!). I was hoping other RHP stuff would do the same for me, but nothing comes close. That's OK. The group should be proud to have produced something so extraordinarily divine -- Brilliant. Nothing like it.

Incredible album that is NOT for the attention-span-challenged.......2007-04-26

I am a person of varied musical tastes, and Songs for a Blue Guitar has been one of my favorite albums since I purchased it 10 years ago... largely because the first time I listened to it was on a road trip and I had the time to devote to listening through the entire album. If you purchase this album, wait for a nice, sunny day, and take a drive through farm country while you listen to this. It's the only way to truly appreciate the epic simplicity of songs like "Make Like Paper" and the ludicrously cool cover of "Silly Love Songs" (...much more profound than the original version.) And of course, it goes without saying that if you are even remotely into acoustic guitar, this album will have you foaming at the mouth.

Are you into mostly mainstream rock and want to get into something a little more (but not too) "indie"? This is a great place to start!

Excellent --and the best of the Red House Painter albums!.......2006-12-30

If you are just getting into Mark Kozelek...pick this one up first. It is a good introduction to what he is recording presently. The previous RHP albums are all different and well done, but do not connect with the listener as this one does. The "Roller coaster" RHP album is a close second. If you are interested in more than this album...pick up his solo albums and the two superb Sun Kil Moon albums.

This is a great album by a wonderful artist that has re-established the melancholy singer songwriter status I have been looking for since David Sylvian released the fabulous "Secrets of the Beehive" in 1987.

A Little Like Watching Lawn Furniture Rust . . . (but pretty).......2006-07-30

I understand reviewers who find this album tedious. But, I also understand those who love it dearly. This album is certainly not party music and does tend towards the melancholy but on the other hand it has some key songs that shouldn't be missed.

To my ears, the first three songs ARE the album. "Have You Forgotten" is a wonderful song about the bittersweet quality of reminiscing. It's followed by the haunting and sad "Song for a Blue Guitar" which is now a Red House Painters classic. "Make like Paper" is a rousing mid-tempo guitar piece--altogether straight ahead and likeable. That is until the infamous rambling "Neil Young and Crazy Horse"-styled guitar solo starts up and carries on for a good long hell of a time. I happen to like this kind of caterwauling myself, but the solo loses a lot of good will on some people. Supposedly, the band lost the good will of their label over it too.

I could listen to these three songs forever. The album could contain ONLY these and I'd be fine with it, because after they end the problems start. Those who groan about the album's slow monochromatic pace start to seem like they have a point. The second half of the album just gets a lot less interesting. The original songs don't reveal anything that hasn't already been done better in the first part of the album, while the cover songs that people fuss over so much stand out largely because they are completely unrecognizable from their original versions.

"All Mixed Up" has some merit, but why didn't the band just come up with some new lyrics and have a whole new song? Why pay royalties to The Cars for a song like this that bears little relation to the original? Some argue that this and in particular the cover of McCartney's "Silly Love Songs" is little more than an attention device designed to pull in listeners who might otherwise ignore the band.

I don't have an answer, other than to say that having seen Mark Kozelek play live on a recent tour; I can tell you he's in his own musical world. You have to come to his world. He's not coming to yours. He's got one really good sound: moody, ethereal, and evocative. That's what he does well and he doesn't stray from it. If you love it, you'll be happy; if you don't you'll be bored. I look at the album as a litmus test. If you cannot get into this album, you're not on his wavelength and probably don't need to bother with the rest of his work. If you do like it, you've come to the right spot and Kozelek has plenty of more music like it where this came from, both with this band and with his others.

I can only give the whole album three stars, but to my ears the first half of the album is five stars all the way.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

Album Description

For the past 25 years, Polansky has been composing a series of fascinating mensuration canons (a formal concept dating back to the Renaissance) that run the sonic gamut from wildly boisterous to serenely introverted. This disc collects thriteen of these canons (one of which is found here in three different realizations). The varied instrumentation includes marimbas, gamelan, electric guitars, children's voices, computer, choir, and chamber ensemble. Performances by and collaborations with William Winant, Jody Diamond, Daniel Goode, the York Vocal Index, Ray Guillette, Nathan Davis, Nick Didkovsky, and others.

This wonderful CD consists entirely of mensuration canons. "Each successively entering voice moves proportionally faster than the previous one, causing each canon's density and rhythmic complexity to increase from beginning to end." There are only a few tracks that I just don't grab me, otherwise this gets a five star rating. Particularly good is Guitar Canon, performed by Polansky on his fretless guitar, and the amazingly cute Anna Canon, based on samples of his third year old daughter's voice.
