Sing down like silver(tone).......2004-10-07

Chris Isaak made one of the most unlikely debuts of 1985. Crooning like Roy Orbison, coming on like a young Elvis Presely and getting a tremendous buzz from his incredible stage shows, Isaak set the wayback machine into motion like no-one since Brian Setzer. The album was so unique that several of these songs found their way into movie soundtracks ("Dancin'," "Gone Riding" and "Funeral In The Rain"). It wasn't just Isaak's movie idol looks that got him these choice slots, his music is very evocative. James Calvin Wilsey's guitar and pedal steel frequently adds a Sun Records/Country feel to the songs, which Isaak's high lonesome croon compliments.

While this is not Isaak's best (it is closer to 3 1/2 stars, really), "SILVERTONE" lays out the template for his career to come.

Isaak's Debut.......2001-04-05

Chris Isaak's debut album takes its name from his backing band, Silvertone. The band's sound harkens back to the hey day of Sun Studios where artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and, most notably for Mr. Isaak, Roy Orbison ruled the day. There is a brooding, dark and eerie sound to the songs. "Dancin'" has an almost funky vibe to it, "The Lonely Ones" is a Roy Orbison redux and is an absolutely magnificent song and "Western Stars" is a lilting ballad. Mr. Isaak has a deep, smooth voice that adds a density to the songs while Silvertone plays songs in a way that seems on the surface to be quite simple but are full of nuances. This is a great debut record.

Origin of the sound.......2000-03-14

I really like Chris Isaak and have everything he has made. But, everyone of his albums sounds alike. This is his first album. Besides his classic song, Dancing, there is nothing here that stands out from all of his other albums. This is basically the origins of his sound that he refines and builds upon in later albums.

People who have followed him from the beginning may consider this to be his ultimate album because everything later is just a variation of the original. But, if you listen to the later albums and then come back to this one, you may find that the first album is a little bland and is just the seed for better subsequent material.

Chris Isaak's best CD........1999-04-16

Chris Isaak's first recorded effort is, without a doubt, one of my favorite CDs of all time. It is dark, moody and hauntingly captivating but maintains a lively energy. A MUST for anyone who even remotely enjoys his work, let alone one who truly appreciates it.

Martin at his mellow best.......2007-06-01

This is great collection of Freddy Martin's prime years from 1933 to 1950 including his semi-classical and novelty hits. There are so many great selections here from the catchy "Bumble Boogie" and ""Sabre Dance Boogie" to the novelty ditties "Dingbat the Singing Cat" and "Rose O' Day". It ends with two of songster, Merv Griffin, big hits. This album is a winner! So get a copy and enjoy Freddy Martin at his best.

Silvertone Blues draws from the past for arrangements but is decidedly modern in its musicianship. Walker performs solo piano on "Bad Luck Blues" and solo guitar on "Talk to Me." On the latter, it's easy to hear a full band production but much more exciting to hear it as a man and his guitar. The piano and guitar duets recall classics like Walter Davis, especially "Do the Walkin'" with Kenny Wayne plunking out the barrelhouse; even at six minutes, it stays interesting. Harmonica great James Cotton duets with Walker on three tracks, each spaced through the sequence like a refreshing return to the country. When they slip into "Letting Go" after the full band sound of "Trouble on Wheels," the CD evokes a blues-radio feel. Alvin Youngblood Hart guests on three tracks, weaving intense guitar fabrics with Walker on Robert Nighthawk's "Crying Won't Help You." This album of diverse blues styles proves not only a good introduction to Joe Louis Walker but also to the blues. --Robert Gordon

Golden Sound of Silvertone.......2003-10-03

Joe Louis Walker's set "Silvertone Blues" is a delight. He's not a purist, combining elements of both rural and urban blues. This set is consistently strong. The opener "Runnin' from the Devil" uses religious imagery with Walker's whooping holler floating to the upper registers. Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne's barrelhouse piano gives a delightful funky feel to the instrumental toe tapper "Kenny's Barrelhouse." My favorite track that fills a slot on my favorite blues tracks compilation is the trad "Do the Walkin'" with Joe's slide guitar weeping on this classic blues, "Sit right down beside me, look me in the eye, how can I convince you woman?, I swear to God I wouldn't lie." "Trouble On Wheels" bounces to a great beat with an electrified Chicago blues sound. Joe Louis plays stutter-style dobro on the trad blues "Talk to Me." The title track is a joyful instrumental. Walker seems to pluck notes that are off the register with his slide guitar on Robert Nighthawk's "Crying Won't Help You." "It's You Baby" is another fine trad blues track. "Silvertone Blues" is a consistently excellent mix of different blues styles with Joe Louis' expressive vocals and guitar pyrotechnics. Enjoy!

Slick and Stripped Down.......2002-09-08

Joe Louis Walker continues to amaze with his abilities and feel for the blues. I have been listening to this cd for three years and I never tire of it. First billed as Walker's return to his blues roots, it his version of an acoustic work which so many artists seem to be doing.

When we talk about Walker's roots, it is important to remember that Walker, a native the San Francisco Bay area who was born on Christmas Day in 1949, grew up listening to his parents' blues with artists as BB King and Howlin' Wolf featured. With a firm background in the blues he matured in the Haight-Ashbury era. One of his room mates at the time was blues guitar great Mike Bloomfield. During this period Walker had the opportunity to play with such people as Steve Miller, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Lightning Hopkins, and Earl Hooker among others. Tired from the excesses of the period Walker spent a decade from 1975 to 1985 as a member of a Gospel Music Choir. He returned to the blues in 1985. As one would expect from his roots and influences a roots acoustic album does not have the feel of the Mississippi Delta, but a more sophisticated sound that is reflective of blues, rock and gospel influences.

In addition to the musical influences of Walkers life being showcased on this cd, his skill and ability as a songwriter are also central. Only two songs, Robert Nighthawk's Crying Won't Help You and Sunnyland Slim's It's You Baby are not Walker originals. Walker has the innate ability to simplify and make poignant life, love and the blues through his songwriting. In Change My Ways he vows to "Quit my cussing and scandalizing, too." In Talk to Me, Walker sings "I feel so good like a man in ecstasy... when you talk to me."

Joe Louis Walker didn't spend ten years in a gospel choir without learning a trick or two about singing and we are fortunate indeed for that. His edgy voice has a wide range and he seems to have a sense of when to hit the high notes for the most emotional impact. Truly reflective of the roots of blues music is Joe Louis Walker's ability to use his voice as a powerful purveyor of the depth of emotion. To me he is one of the best of this time and age at doing this.

An added treat to this cd are the guest appearances by Alvin Youngblood Hart, guitar and vocals James Cotton, harmonica and Kenny Blue Boss Wayne, piano. These guest add to the cd in a way that is not always typical of guest appearances. Hart brings a complimentary and diverse guitar style on songs Run from the Devil, Born in Mississippi and Crying Won't Help You. It can easily be heard on Change My Ways and Letting Go why James Cotton is such a well respected harmonica player. Kenny Blue Boss Wayne guests on Kenny's Barrelhouse, Do the Walkin', Trouble on Wheels and Silvertone Blues and without his presence this would be a significantly different cd.

It is hard to single out songs which are important or interesting on this cd because all of them are so well done and great to listen to. I love Walker's original Do the Walkin' . Stripped down with Walker on Slide guitar and vocals and Wayne on piano, it is an especially poignant love song (although not typical of pop tripe put out these days). Walker sings:

Every time I kiss you baby
You ask me will it last
Somebody must have hurt you baby
Sometime in the past
But I never will
Do you hear me talkin'
If anybody's gonna leave here
You gonna have to do the walkin'

It is not at all surprising that a cd which Joe Louis Walker chose to dedicate to the memory blues greats Johnny Adams, Charles Brown, Lowell Fulson and Mighty Joe Young be a quality blues cd. If you are a fan of the blues or like acoustic music this is a cd worth a listen.

The Real Thing.......2000-08-28

Don't let Mr. Atlanta Georgia sway you from listening to this gem. Unlike SRV, this is the real stuff: great guitar, slide guitar, piano and harp, with spare production. I saw Joe Louis Walker years ago at the San Francisco Blues Festival, and he just kicked. I hadn't heard him in a while, but just picked up this CD and, like good wine, he seems to have gotten better with age. A great blues CD.

I've seen Joe in concert 2 times now and it is a show you will never forget. He plays with such passion in his music' everybody starts dancing at his shows. If you want just good blues and nothing but the blues then Joe is your man.

Don't Waste Your Time With This Pretender.......1999-12-26

I remember reading an interview article with Joe Louis Walker in Guitar magazine in the late '80s. Among other things, he made a point of disparaging Stevie Ray Vaughan as someone who didn't know how to play blues or even know what blues music really was. Of course, Mr. Louis pointed out that HE knew what blues music was all about. This high-brow, arrogant attitude really turned me off to him as a person and a musician. If Mr. Louis spent less time copying Robert Cray's chops and spent a little more time working on his humility, maybe he could be more than a second-rate guitarist jealous of those who have gone before him to greater mass appeal.

Classic Album Reborn........2005-01-10

The original album from which these remixes were born is an absolute classic which still sounds as fresh today as it did back in 88 when it was released. Never quite reaching true recognition The Stone Roses split and split again falling short of mass global domination yet still leaving a legendary album. These remixes have been carefully recreated by some of dance musics most respected artists. Pity Silvertone will yet again cash in off this, suppose they are still painting their office walls.

This CD contains such powerful expressions of the truth and reality of God within our heart, minds, and lives. It truly takes us into a place within our hearts and souls of meditating on who God is and how very good He is. All of the songs seem to sing glory to the Lord from different perspectives in our every day lives as well as communicating a message of the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ in a manner that is fresh, alive, and humbling. This ALBUM is a rare find and a treasure amongst the endless piles of both secular and christian albums that are out there. This album not only has "Heavenly" power but also a very attractive crossover appeal to the masses. Christians and others can freely listen and be moved in wherever they're at in their personal lives. I VERY EXTREMELY highly recommend this ALBUM to any who are searching not only for great music to listen to, but to any who are searching for the TRUTH, searching for the greater reality of GOD! my roommate had this CD, and i thought that it was really good. i would definitely recommend it. one negative side to the CD is that all the songs seem to sound similar. other than that, all the songs are good. get it and listen to it.

Awesome Voice.......2001-01-10

Two tracks on this cd blow me away - "One Child" and "At Your Feet". "One Child" is about the birth of baby Jesus who came to save the world. "At Your Feet" is about our singular desire to be at Jesus' feet.

Natalie's awesome voice and interpretive styles minister to my soul on these two songs, as well as on the rest of the cd.

My first introduction to christian music and it's HOT!.......1999-06-21

I've recently accepted God back into my life, and soon after, a friend lent me this CD. I played it everywhere I went in my Jeep for several days. The song "I Am Not Alone" touched me right where I needed it, and I just cried. I've been into good rock and roll for a long time, and did not know that you could find good rock and roll in christian music, but Natalie Grant has shown me otherwise. Another song I liked was the one about one child, how it took only one child to change the entire world, and nothing in this world could have stopped this child. ALL the songs on this CD are great, but these two especially touched me and spoke to me when I needed it most, while taking my first steps back into the fold.

Success ruined the Stone Roses after their astounding, groundbreaking debut album and a less-popular follow-up. Now, in a musical era where "garage rock" is a phrase thrown around like frisbees, the title of the Stone Roses' "Garage Flowers" seems quite appropriate. It's rough, gritty and unfinished, but certainly worth a look for the Roses fan.

Starting with the so-so "Getting Plenty," it shifts in a blare of horns and drums to the catchy, unhappy "Here It Comes" ("Give me your life/It's worthless anyhow"). The Roses show their talent for getting adrenaline pumping with the weightily catchy "Tradjic Roundabout," loud percussion-led "So Young," and Beatles-esque "All I Want."

As a connection to their debut album, there's an early cut of "I Wanna Be Adored." It's less coherent and more scattered; it's primarily interesting as a sign of how their music evolved into the gritty, polished sound of "Stone Roses." Additionally, "This Is the One" appears in all its punky, whispery glory, a slightly different version from that of the debut album, but possibly even better.

The sound of "Stone Roses" hasn't yet blossomed in "Garage Flowers." Their sound was still evolving and changing. As a result several of the songs here were released for the first time in "Garage Flowers," still with that slightly scratched, unfinished feeling that you only get in demo CDs. Those expecting the quality of "Stone Roses" or "Second Coming" will be disappointed, but those looking for some semi-good music from the then-evolving Stone Roses will find it here.

The muddier sound makes it a little harder to hear the music at times. They're a little uneven musically, tending to depend heavily either on percussion or guitars. And the melodies are somewhat less complex than they were later in the Roses' career, especially with the shaky filler song "Getting Plenty." However, they are still fairly good, with some of the brilliant, swirling guitar riffs and thunderous drumming that can get your pulse racing in an instant.

The 1986 demo album "Garage Flowers" is a shift down from the rest of the Roses' music catalog, but it's still a worthy release and a curiosity for Stone Roses fans.

Interesting precursor to their debut album.......2004-10-30

This collection of pre-debut album recordings (from around 1985) show the Roses as a more visceral guitar band, but with tendencies towards greatness. Sure, nothing here is as good as the songs on the first album (although "I Wanna Be Adored" and "This is the One" appear here in early forms), but songs like "Gettin' Plenty", "Here It Comes", "Trust a Fox", and "Tradjic Roundabout" are performed with bravado and are impressive works in their own right, particularly Reni's unbelievable drumming. Most of the good songs are in the beginning, making this collection a little front heavy, but if you're a Roses fan (and you are if you're reading this review) then you should definitely consider checking this out in order to hear a few lost gems.
