5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars WWII songs.......2007-06-11

I'm too young to remember the songs. However, while I was growing up I was allowed to see the movies from that era. I loved the simplicity of the melodies and lyrics. It's a weird flash back to my childhood.

5 out of 5 stars For Those That remember Real Music.......2007-05-24

As someone who thinks that modern day music isn't, these CD's are great. Good reproduction of sound that is pure and real. The 65 songs are a fine value at the price. This collection will please anyone that remembers the music of WWII and will also be enjoyed by those that want to hear the great old songs sung by the artists that made them famous. You will not go wrong with this collection!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great collection of music for all you 40's music lovers!.......2006-02-27

I just bought this collection recently, and I must tell you, it is really good! The music tracks are really clear and you can just imagine this era as the songs play! I shared these cd's with my mom one afternoon and she had quite a time reminiscing over this music! This is a lot of good nostalgic music for all of you that enjoy world war 2 music. (this is a 3-cd set for a great price!)

5 out of 5 stars World War II Songs: As Time Goes By.......2005-12-08

My mother was thrilled to receive this dvd set as a gift - it brought back so many memories for her and the 3 cd set is a bargain. What a great collection of songs!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Different concept for a concept album.......2006-07-06

Men Without Hats have been known as a synth-pop group with a touch of liberal social commentary blended in the music. They were doing quite well as this kind of group with songs like Safety Dance and Messiahs Die Young, however this time around things changed. Ivan and friends decided to do a concept album and the result is Pop Goes the World. The concept was some story about a boy and a girl, but that's not what's important. While it's a very different animal than the synth-pop trio's other albums it is a very worthwhile diversion from their norm.

MWOH signed up producer Zeus B. Held (no, I'm serious... he actually went by that name) to help put this album together. Zeus did a fair amount of producing with remix albums for Gary Numan, Alphaville, Dead or Alive, Erasure, Simple Minds and a slew of other 80's electronic and experimental groups. Add some studio musicians and you get a more acoustic album than the previous MWOH records.

Does that mean no more synth-pop? No way. You get two really catchy dance tracks on this album. The most famous one, Pop Goes the World, is a really great song and has a real catchy melody to it. The other track, Moonbeam, hit the clubs back in the 80's pretty strong and was the purist of the two in regards to that genre. They still sound very different than Safety Dance, but at the same time they sound a lot more polished musically and better produced.

Just about every song on this album is worth noting. On Tuesday has Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull peforming on flute and is as much a song of ambience as it is rhythm and melody. A great song to relax to. There are some really good piano ballads on this album with the reflective Bright Side of the Sun and the lightly angst-ridden Lose My Way. This album essentially has a good balance of high energy music, mellow tracks, peppy music, punchy music, and more in between. You will notice the underlying theme of "Johnny and Jenny" throughout most of the album, too.

While Pop Goes the World is very different from anything Men Without Hats did previously this album is definitely one of their better achievements. It shows that Ivan and the gang can expand their musical horizons successfully without losing what made them great in the first place. If you like 80's dance music, or if you just like good music, this album will be a nice addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great 80's Pop.......2005-10-20

This is one of the best albums to come out of 1987. Nice synthy pop feel and Ian Anderson on one song! That is worth the price alone.

This is my favorite MWH album.

3 out of 5 stars Pop goes the Hats........2005-09-20

I know most would call them a one-hit-wonder, but the majority of their songs are great. I think this album and the band in general are quite underrated. I didn't get this album until recently, and realized what I was missing all these years. A very solid and catchy pop album. The title track was the hit here, but I believe "Moonbeam" was a single as well. This is consistently good, but my favorites are "Pop Goes The World", "Jenny Wore Black", "Intro/Walk On Water", and the excellent "On Tuesday". That song has quite the flute hook. Overall I like their "Rhythm Of Youth" album more, but this is the next best thing. Too bad they're all so hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Brilliance!.......2005-09-10

Quite possibly the greatest pop record ever produced. Yeah, very strong statement - but give it a shot. Just look at all of these reviews - what gives? Well, for one, there really are no duds on here. Zip. Nada. Just an amazing tapestry of music, spun together in beautiful harmony around the themes of love and devotion. I actually purchased this when it first was released, and since then, I am still in total shock of the end-to-end quality. Of course, the biggest shock are the artists - MWH sounded NOTHING like this on their previous efforts. BIG shame that it didn't take off like it deserved. I can only hope many more will take the time and be moved as I was (and continue to be).

All songs are standouts, but as for the "best of the best", these would be "Pop Goes the World", "In the name of Angels", "Lose My Way", and the genius "Walk on Water". If you never considered buying a MWH's CD, here's your open invitation - prepare to be blown away!

ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars from classic rock fan as well!.......2004-09-16

I'm normally a classic rock fan ('60s/'70s progressive), but I ended up with this from a cheap bin when the '80s retro craze started. I started listening to this and couldn't stop...I have no idea how many times I've played it.

It's sort of a vague concept album about life and love and death. I was pleasantly surprised to find Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull (one of my favorite bands) plays flute on "On Tuesday"!

As a warning, this album contains LOTS of synths, and parts of it even get to the point of being cheesy...but it seems like the band knows this, and do it deliberately to make the music seem more spontaneous and less pretentious. Anyway, it works.

It should have been a classic...I can't believe how overlooked it is.

Album Description

Remastered. If any one album deserves credit for ushering in the Western swing revival, it's this previously buried treasure from 1970. Haggard taught himself to play fiddle before recording this album and augmented his band with members of Wills's pioneering Texas Playboys, including guitarist Eldon Shamblin and fiddler Johnny Gimble. Merle would become a more fluid fiddler in the future, and the Strangers would swing more cohesively, but that doesn't take away from the chemistry or adventurousness in this, his first effort in the genre. BGO. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Tribute to a Tribute Album.......2007-02-07

Not to worry this is a CD that takes two of Merle Haggard's Capital Record albums from the 1970's and puts them on one CD. In a way its amazing that Record buyers from the 60's and 70's bought albums with 30 minutes of music, but today we can reap the benefits of two albums plus some well worth bonus tracks on one CD. As to the Music its a pure delight. Merle Haggard plays tribute to his musical idol Bob Wills on the 1st half of this CD. Its great and many of the original Texas Playboys play too. This has been out of circulation for awhile. The other half of the CD is pure Haggard at his best.

4 out of 5 stars their last essential release.......2007-04-10

«Rock & Roll Music to the World» was the last essential release of the british blues rockers. Thirty five years after it's release, Ten Years After has been reduced to litte more than a bunch of fast, loud guitar runs in many people's minds. And there are memories of their stomping Woodstock performance. «Rock & Roll Music to the World» offers some blues, some ballads and of course the kind of simple rock an roll tunes Ten Years After always will be associated with: Choo Choo Mama, Tomorrow I'll Be Out of Town or the title track. Sure, this is the album of a band soon running out of steam. The strain of endless touring is beginning to tell. And sure, there's not much inspiration in Alvin Lee's guitar routines. But this is a suprisingly strong album. The band sounds tight and relaxed. Chick Churchill plays some interresting combination of synthesizer and organ lines. And there are even highlights like Standing at the Station or You Give Me Loving.

5 out of 5 stars rock & roll music to the world ten years after.......2006-09-06

this a must for any fan of ten years after or anyone who enjoys booige based rock & roll

4 out of 5 stars goin' mainstream.......2005-12-29

'Rock and Roll Music To the World' is Alvin Lee and Ten Year's After's ninth album, released in 1972. There would only be one more studio disc from the band, so by this point in time they were on the cusp of dissolving. Apparently there were strong personalities and a good deal of dissention within the band, which at times resulted in on-stage arguments complete with members refusing to play, or throwing bottles and other missiles at one another. You wouldn't know it to listen to the tight, blues-rock musicianship offered here, with all the tracks penned, sung, and in most cases defined by the lead guitar work of Alvin Lee.

Despite being a British band, Ten Years After only scored one top ten hit in their homeland, in June of 1970 when 'Love Like a Man' took them to number 10. In America, the Top-40 success was even leaner, with only one track, 'I'd Love To Change the World' (from their 1971 disc 'A Space In Time') barely reaching number 40. But the band was better known in America for two other achievements: being one of the most-toured bands circa 1970, and Alvin Lee's thrilling performance of 'I'm Going Home' at the Woodstock Festival.

While 'Rock and Roll Music To the World' is often panned as a shallow effort for Lee and Co., it stands as my favorite Ten Years After recording. I purchased the release on vinyl in 1972 due to the large number of quality tracks that were receiving airplay on the burgeoning FM radio dial. 'You Give Me Loving', 'Convention Prevention', 'You Can't Win Them All', 'Choo Choo Mama', and the title track all made the playlists. While a lot of the music is good, old-fashioned rock and roll, the compositions at times offer lyrical depth. 'Religion', for example, has the strongest philosophical bent, offering reasonings such as "once you're dead there's nothing left for giving, so life means fighting for your every breath". On 'Convention Prevention', one of my favorite tunes from the disc, Lee turns some nice phrases such as, "I'd like to reach out to you and learn just how do you do, so we can still relate; I'd like to open my mind so you can come inside, and see that we communicate". The 'dream' of the psycedelic '60's is given a final nod in 'Rock and Roll Music To the World' as Lee intones, "Give peace a chance, get up and dance". The album was for Lee what 'Court and Spark' was for Joni Mitchell: a cashing in on the total commercialization of the rock industry. No longer did bands view the music as art for art's sake, but were out to produce a salable product.

Fortuantely, Alvin Lee still had his lead guitar sensibilities adeptly in tow, cutting loose with exceptional lead guitar runs on nearly every track. Tracks 3, 4 and 8 are the weaker numbers, but each is worthy in their own right, the first two as blues-rock endeavors, with an emphasis on the rock ('Standing At the Station' gives keyboardist Chick Churchill and bassist Leo Lyons opportunities to solo), while 'Tomorrow I'll Be Out Of Town" queue's up as the lone country-rock track, again with an emphasis on the rock. The opener, 'You Give Me Loving', a six and 1/2 minute loping mass of metal and sound effects, and the roaring 'Choo Choo Mama' became staples at TYA concerts for a number of years to come.

For whatever reason, many of Ten Years After's discs are in relatively short supply. Most likely, people who purchase them tend to hold on to them. Not many are passed on for less than a ten-spot, although I was able to score my remastered, imported copy of this disc for only $6 (shipping included) on ebay, so deals can be had. The liner notes by Neil Slaven are fairly extensive, giving a detailed biography of the band, and the artwork from the original LP has been reproduced. This is one of those discs that you can count on to deliver the goods each time you slip it in the player. Alvin Lee and band always find that rock and roll groove. Six of the nine tracks warrant five stars, and the remaining three are three or four star efforts. No losers here, folks.

4 out of 5 stars An Essential Blues-Rock Album.......2005-07-03

If the only Ten Years After songs you've heard were Goin' Home and the rather forgettable cut from Space in Time that for some reason the suits in NYC dictate their classic rock stations play into the ground, you're in for a very pleasant surprise when you put this album on. That not one of these songs gets airplay is good evidense that we're stuck with Top 40 re-hash pawned off as classic FM rock on commercial OTA radio. Convention Prevention, Religion and Standing at the Station (not to be confused with Joe's song of the same name) each are worth the price of this CD alone.

5 out of 5 stars TYA best ever!!! Standing at the Station is their best song.......2005-06-21

I remember when this lp went out the reviews were not good at all. This surely did a lot of damage to the band, because in the first place, people like me did not take the band seriously because of the song "Going Home"....ok it is fast but?

I bought this record at the bargain table and since the first hearing I fell in love with it, particulary went crazy with the song "Standin at the Station". It is so brilliant and well played and developed...it is the "Stairway to Heaven" of Ten Years After..only that it never received the attention from radio programers...sad, very sad.
This cd sounds very clean and still it shows it was very well produced and recorded.
Since the first song "You Give Me loving", to the fast "Cho Cho Mama"...this is the best TYA record ever.

Get it now!!

4 out of 5 stars good show with good music.......2006-03-04

I had to play in the orchestra for a run of this show last summer and going into it I had never even heard of Kander and Ebb. However, after listening to this music countless times I began to really dig it. Some of the songs are humorous, but pretty much all of them carry a message. Also the singing on this disc is very well done, personally i'm a fan of the performance of "Spider Woman" (I don't know the singer's name). All in all this is a cd worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great show..........2004-06-01

Although I have just seen this in Kansas City and no one (in my book) holds a candle to Teri Adams, this recording is the next best thing. These are great songs--half of which are hillariously funny (though much of the humor is interpreted through blocking and facial expression), and the other half are serious. Before I saw this show, I had no idea who Kander and Ebb were, let alone that they wrote so many songs that I already knew and loved. Funny how things like that work...

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadway Greats........2001-08-18

The music on this CD is just great. Kander and Ebb were probably some of the best composers of all time. This CD has all the classics and some of their lesser known songs. The one thing that made it not get 5 stars was the fact that so many of the songs are mixed together. For example "Quiet Thing" and "Marry Me" were mixed together in an array that really didn't suit either of them all that well. The overall soundtrack is very good, the recording quality is quite good too but I just wish they would have left some of the songs in their full format.

5 out of 5 stars Kander and Ebb Really do "Make the World Go Round".......2001-01-20

If you like show tunes performed by some of the finest singers to ever give voice to them, this CD is an absolute must have! There are so many songs on this CD, and everyone a show stopper, that it's practically a steal at the price. If you are not a Kander and Ebb afficiando, which I am not, you will find yourself asking "did they do THIS ONE, TOO"? The duet by Bob Cuccioli and Jim Walton of "I Don't Remember You" and "Sometimes a Day Goes By" is absolutely fabulous. Every song is done with perfect styling. The arrangements are fabulous and the order of the music is just right. I've seen CD's claiming that "this is the only Broadway CD you'll ever need". Don't believe it. This CD is one that contains the most popular music from some of the most famous and more current shows that I've ever heard. If you love show music (even if you don't know what show these songs are from), you'll love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Revue.......2000-07-30

The music of Kander & Ebb is some of the best that broadway has to offer, and this show gives you just a taste. All of the performers are wonderful. Karen Ziemba is a particular standout. The flow of the songs is great, as well as the arrangements. If you like Kander & Ebb than this is the cd for you.

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Jazz with tropical percussion........2006-03-25

I first encountered this group when I was in collage in the early seventies. I was impressed an bought both of these albums when they were on LP vinyl. Since I have played the he** out of them, they are now so worn they don't play well any more. I was thrilled to find them available on CD (no where but Amazon) and they sound better than ever. Anyone who loved Jazz needs to check these guys out.

2 out of 5 stars Great Albums - However These Are NOT Remastered!.......2005-10-15

I've been a long time fan of Osibisa, since the '70s. That's when I bought Woyaya and Heads.

This 2 album set consists of the titles Osibisa and Woyaya. I had never heard the Osibisa album before. It's surprisingly good. The main reason I purchased this CD set was to get a pristine version of Woyaya. Unfortunately I was sorely disappointed with this CD.

I listened to every track from the originally mastered CD, released in 1993 and compared it to this 2004 "remastered" version. There was absolutely no difference that I could detect between the two! The album still sounds muddy and dull, not clean and bright as I would expect from a decent remastering job.

If it wasn't for the Osibisa album I would consider this to have been a complete waste of money - though the sound on that album is none too good either.

My 2 star rating is not because of the music which is great, but because of the high price with poor sound quality. Give me nice Woyaya remastering and I'd gladly give this CD 5 stars.

Short and Sweet!

In case you're wondering why this is only going for $2. for new copies from secondary dealers, is because it wasn't worth the $16.00 it originally was priced at! What a SHOCK when I got this home from the store and put it in my machine!

I gave it away in a grab bag at work!

All I can say is: "Miss Horne, I am so sorry that you allowed this to be released...it's worse than the stuff that Callas/Di Stefano did at the end."
