Ok, so this is only tangentially related to reviewing "Like a Bolt of Lightening" but it's a pretty amusing story. So I have Juliette's latest "Four on the Floor" album and like the rest of you I was impressed by the songs, the tight band, and Juliette's impressive "rawk chick" approach, which is utterly convincing although by no means surprising considering her acting career. I wanted to sample the "Like a Bolt of Lightening" EP and dowloaded the tracks (don't worry kids, I still buy CDs) and loaded them onto iTunes. But after the second song came on, I had to check the playlist twice to confirm what I was listening to; suddenly Juliette was doing a *spot-on* imitation of Rachel Nagy from the Detroit Cobras. I don't mean she sorta sounded like her; the band was doing a similar 60s garage rock style, and Juliette was a complete and utter dead ringer for Nagy! I was impressed, but sort of disappointed. I mean, her usual routine is derivative of many classic rock singers, but not of any one in particular. This latest development changed my opinion of Juliette, making her sound like a poser ripping off other people's styles (albeit convincingly). As the EP progressed it seemed like it would go from a rock style song typical of what I knew the Licks to sound like, to another Cobras rip-off, and I began to reevaluate my opinion of Miss Lewis.

Ok, so fast-forward to the end of the EP, and I checked the track listing again. I must have downloaded a 'Cobras EP recently and forgot to ID the songs with the artist name, and somehow those songs got ID'd along with Juliette's as being part of "Like a Bolt of Lightening"! So it was indeed the Detroit Cobras after all and not some identity crisis on the part of Juliette. Phew!

And by the way, the EP rocks, Juliette is the real deal. And while I'm at it, check out the Detroit Cobras too!

Songs full of moaning, heavy breathing and sexual innuendo, none of which requires much talent. This is unfortunate, because this band actually shows potential. I'd like to hear them working with better material.

With this Ep Juliette Lewis prooves that she's not only a great actress, but she's also a great singer. Juliette and The Licks are something refreshing in punk rock music. These six songs are all excellent but they're nothing compared to the debut album that was released three months later.
