In his late-'70s hit-making heyday, Andy Gibb was largely dismissed as a teen pinup coasting on the coattails of his big brothers, the Bee Gees (who were then at the height of their Saturday Night Fever-era success). Indeed, hits like "I Just Want to Be Your Everything," "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water," "Shadow Dancing," "An Everlasting Love," and "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away"--all of which featured vocal, songwriting and/or production help from various Bee Gees--were fluffy AM-friendly confections, but they were extraordinarily well-crafted ones. Those tunes are all featured on this 12-song collection. --Scott Schinder

A GREAT SUPERSTAR ALWAYS IN THE SHADOWS OF HIS FAMOUS BROTHERS, THE BEE GEES........2007-03-25
ANDY GIBB was born with the gift of music in his blood from day one. Music was always in the Gibb household and ANDY just took it all in with open arms. His older brothers Barry, Robin and the late great Maurice Gibb would be the biggest musical influences in ANDY'S life and would often sing and jam with them numerous times through the years. For the record, ANDY GIBB was asked to and destined to be a BEE GEE. Why ANDY did not feel that he would fit in THE BEE GEES is still kind of a mystery to me. Maybe ANDY felt that way because he felt that he would not have the freedom that was needed to write his own songs. However, his brother's would become famous and known as THE BEE GEES and begin the Australian Invasion in 1967 and take the whole world by storm. With his brother's new fame and influence, ANDY wanted to set out on his own and sing his own gospel to his own audience. For wanting to sing solo on his own and sing his own songs, you will be amazed when you look at the attached CD booklet and find THE BEE GEES credited and stamped all over the album as producers as well as songwriters and co-songwriters for all of ANDY'S most popular hit songs in the 70's. ANDY'S popularity would re-define what being a teen idol really is. ANDY would move on and become one of the greatest teen idol's of all-time. ANDY GIBB'S "GREATEST HITS COLLECTION" spans from 1977 to 1980. In my opinion, this compilation album is a true testament of a young musical genius and a fine fitting tribute to an artist that was indeed, far ahead of his time. With this in mind, this is the tragic story of ANDREW ROY GIBB, the tales of a career cut so short. His songs are his story.
And now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary compilation begins with the beautiful new 1991 song "Man On Fire," the forever GIBB trademark romantic "I Just Want To Be Your Everything," the smooth "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water," the uplifting country Rocker "Flowing Rivers," the forever trademark GIBB hit song "Shadow Dancing," another forever GIBB hit song with a beautiful beat "An Everlasting Love," one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away," the soulful "Desire," the soothing romantic "After Dark," the slow and beautiful duet with Olivia Newton John, "I Can't Help It," the mild Rocker "This Is Time" and the slow and beautiful romantic song "Me (Without You)." May I also add that ANDY'S most gifted lead vocals were incredible on all of these songs. Listening to all of these special treasured songs brings back so many memories that I will always hold so dear to my heart. THE BEE GEES contributed so much to their younger brother ANDY'S career with their songwriting assistance and guidance. I do not think that ANDY would have succeeded or made it like he did without them.
Overall, this is one compilation album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a ANDY GIBB diehard fan or a devout 70's collector. This is not a bad compilation album to start with if you are a newcomwer or a new beginner to the sound and music of ANDY GIBB.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This compilation will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great compilation album that no ANDY GIBB diehard fan or a devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, this is the usual gothic Rock n' Roll tale of what happens when drugs take over your life. It is just too bad that ANDY GIBB'S life and musical career was cut so short. I really truly believe that ANDY still had so much more to contribute and accomplish in Rock n' Roll. In my opinion, I think that when actress Victoria Principal came into GIBB'S life, he found compatibility and his true soulmate. Seeing both GIBB and Principal together, you can tell that they were young and truly in love with each other. With Principal, he was faced with the task of what was more important, drugs or Principal. According to VH1's "BEHIND THE MUSIC," Principal herself presented this ultimatum to GIBB, "either choose drugs or me?" She commented sadly that GIBB chose drugs. When GIBB and Principal parted ways in the 80's, neither of their lives would ever be the same again. GIBB would become so broken up that he would never recover. His drug dependency would get so bad that his brothers had to intervene resulting in him getting the help that was needed. But it was to late. The years of drug abuse had already taken its toll and ANDY'S young 30 year old sad and broken heart would finally give out on 10 March 1988. What a tragic story and ending to what could have been a happy and long successful career. However, ANDY GIBB'S music lives on and will always live in our hearts. So here's to you late great Andy, Barry, Robin and the late great Maurice. ANDY GIBB LIVES. MAURICE GIBB LIVES. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. ANDY GIBB FOREVER. MAURICE GIBB RULES. THE BEE GEES FOREVER. R.I.P. ANDREW ROY GIBB, Born 5 March 1958, Died 10 March 1988 at age 30. Also, R.I.P. MAURICE ERNEST GIBB, Born 22 December 1949, Died 12 January 2003 at age 54. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

A Well Rounded Collection from One of the 70's Best Balladeers.......2006-02-22
In any event, I admit that now almost 30 years later as an adult in my 30's I still appreciate a good number of Andy Gibb's material. There is something both wistful and longing in his delivery despite the bright sheen of the production that reaches through and impresses. And the tragic untimely demise he met at just barely the age of 30 only adds further to his legacy.
Now onto the music itself. I won't assert that there's anything particulary sophisticated or unique about his output. On the surface of things, it sounds like typical late 70's pop fare rife with strings, synths, and guitars. But give some of the tunes a more cursory listen and you too may be privvy to some of the underlying currents and flourishes Andy Gibb was infusing his music with.
Laregly in the 'shadow' of his older brothers, The Bee Gees, Andy Gibb managed to plot a trajectory of his own making. His most successful tunes, "Shadow Dancing", "(Love Is)Thicker Than Water", and "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" are pleasant enough and decent examples of pop from that era.
But in my opinion, he really shines on the gorgeous "An Everlasting Love" - a song on the surface full of bounce, bubbly effervescence, and springtime zephyr but simultaneoulsy tinged with melancholy and plaintive longing. When Andy Gibb sings the poetic "I was yours before the stars were born and you were mine" and intones in the chorus: "And an everlasting love will never die..", I feel every nuance.
Another song of his I enjoy is "(Our Love)Don't Throw It All Away" - again on the surface a seemingly conventional pop ballad. But there are underlying shadows throughout that Andy Gibb manages to project which creates quite an atmosphere that is both gripping and soulful. I could go on about the rest of his offerings but these tunes really have lingered in my musical consciousness for a duration with seeming good reason.
I won't elevate Andy Gibb to the same plateau of say, The Beatles but I do make the case that he has contributed a fair number of decent pop classics to the rock era echelon. Some may call his stuff discofied glossy pop or maudlin but I dare say that there are a number of redeeming gems to be unearthed if given an unbiased listen.
