From Amazon.co.uk
Hot on the heels of their shock UK No. 1 single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not confirms Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys as the UK underground's most proselytizing young preachers of the DIY gospel. Marrying nervy, caffeine-and-cigarettes indie clatter to conversational, pretense-free lyrics and the occasional burst of off-the-cuff eloquence ("No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets," proffers "Dancefloor"), it's an instant, pulse-racing hit. No question, the Monkeys are more sinners than saints. The opening "The View from the Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van," a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station wagon. Look beyond the Arctics' bristly, laddish exterior, however, because it's actually affairs of the heart that comprise this album's secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes," bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum"--a tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs ("I've seen your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun"), is tinted with sweet affection. --Louis PattisonAlbum Description
Musically, there are bits of The Stone Roses, "What's The Story Morning Glory", and "Nevermind". As catchy as those reference points are, it's the songwriting that has won the band a fiercely dedicated following; a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and "Ghost Town" era Specials. Two #1 UK singles. Press already lined up with Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and Interview, to name a few. Three more US/Canadian tours planned for this year, including headlining Domino's label showcase at SXSW.Customer Reviews:

Not a skipable track, but my favorites are Our Bovine Public, Mens Needs, I'm a REALIST, I've tried everything and the awesome Be Safe, which has the same idea as Radiohead's Fitter Happier.... "These are the days when I hate the world Hate the rich, hate the happy, hate the complacent, the TV watchers, beer drinkers, the satisfied ones. Because I know I can be all of those little hateful things. And then I hate myself for realising that"

GOOD POP-ROCK EFFORT.......2007-05-09
Now, back to the album. Firstly, this is not a country album. You can tell that from the first few tracks as the familiar country "twang" has been replaced by rock guitars. Most of the tracks are up-tempo, but there are some slower tracks such as "Strong" and "This Life," the latter of which is more like a ballade. She hasn't completely abandoned her country roots, however, with the tracks, "Save Myself" and "A Little More Time." Her duet with Brian McFadden is one of my favorite tracks on the CD and also has more of a country feel. The album concludes with "Some People," which is also on her "This Woman" album.
While not my favorite genre, LeAnn Rimes does an admirable job on it, and the emotion she puts into these songs proves that she has grown artistically from a young teenager to a grown woman.
If you enjoy LeAnn Rimes and pop rock, you might enjoy this album. However, if you're a country purist, you might want to pass on it.
You'd certainly 'wanna' this album.......2007-04-29
"Whatever We Wanna" is certainly on the pop field, with practically no country, although some tag it in this category. It again showcases LeAnn Rimes' strong vocal mastery and her songwriters' strong grip at what should be good music. The voice is always strong and good, and we all know that it handles both pop and country with equal power, vibrations and exquisite style. Personally I would single out one track "Headphones", but all the others are equally great. The last track "Some People" is also on her other album ("This Woman"). You will hear the voice telling stories from a powerful woman in "Strong", who leaves us "Satisfied" not "For the First Time", "And It Feels Like" you get "A Little More Time" through your "Headphones" or stereo of "Whatever We Wanna".
Some of you may say that some of this material sounds like much of what is now playing on contemporary country charts. Some may note that this is quite a fresh look on the pop music as known in Europe. Some may even be wondering if this music can be classed at all. Some of you may find little notes connecting songs from this album to other albums of either LeAnn herself or other artists. Well, music is a big melting pot of today, and LeAnn Rimes surely knows her way of cooking some good sort of cake according to her own recipe.
This import is double the price I am regularly prepared to pay for a CD on Amazon, but it is worth every penny or cent, as you would return to it again and again. LeAnn Rimes did her best here to ensure that there are no doubts or frustration with even a single track. What you get is what you'd 'wanna' listen to today because it is amazing music from an amazing artist.

A timeless work of "audio art".......2007-02-20
In my opinion, Amiee Mann spent the 80's climbing to this very high point. Her work with "'til tuesday" managed to improve with each release. The 80's were an outstanding decade for pop and rock, but the "new wave" formula often used (and exploited by early 'til tuesday) had to be tossed aside for Aimee to truly shine. The 90's may have been a huge train wreck for the music industry, but Aimee Mann was shining brighter than ever!
One cannot review this CD without mentioning the production by Jon Brion (Aimee's 'til tuesday band mate). Nothing short of amazing!
I purchased this CD on the very day it was released back in the early 90's. It has since become a timeless work of "audio art", one of the few truly GREAT albums of the era.

excellent solo debut for aimee..........2006-03-05
her songs on this cd were supposed to be for a 4th 'til
tuesday album, but the way things went, mann decided to
go solo, and the result is perfect.
One of Aimee Mann's best!.......2005-08-15
Fine debut........2005-05-05
The music excels at its best when Mann manages to coax her saracastic lyric and deadpan vocal into a sort of aggressive, ecstatic delivery ("I Should've Been Known", "Put Me On Top"), or when it clearly points to the feax-folky direction that would be coming in years to come (the brilliantly melancholy "4th of July", "Stupid Thing"). There's a couple misfires on this one as a result (sacchriney pop song "Could've Been Anyone", the conceptually brilliant but lifelessly executed "Jacob Marley's Chain"), although this is all going to be pretty subjective, the music is pleasant enough, some of it just lacks bite.
Its a beginning, and better things are to come-- if you're interested in Mann, don't start here, check one of the more recent albums, but if you've got those, this makes for an interesting listen.

Think of Ben Folds as Billy Joel minus the Tin Pan Alley heritage and armed with a sweet, wry, slacker ethos. In a guitar-free trio setting, the Chapel Hill smart guy pounds the ivories with gusto while singing a tremendous batch of funny ("Kate"), poignant ("Brick," "Evaporated"), pissed-off ("Song for the Dumped"), and hugely refreshing (all 12 tunes here) songs. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
These guys give Coldplay a run for their money!.......2007-06-25
No, this does not even resemble Primus (no one does, same goes for BFF). Ben Folds really is a _______ good piano player, not as technical, but musically, he has the goods. He plays some sick solos on the piano, never losing melody. THe rest of the band is great too, of course (_____, I can't remember their names), but Ben Folds is the main star, as if I couldn't be more obvious.
With song titles like "song For The DUmped", obviously close minded idiots will call him emo or some other ______ label, but yeah right. That song actually is pretty funny; the only thing Ben Folds cares about is getting his money back that he wasted on his girlfriend (as well as his black t-shirt, whatever the _____ that means). I like Brick, but people need to lay off on the whole Brick thing. I'm glad I never followed hit singles during the early to mid 90's, so don't get mad at me! None of the songs are bad. There's plenty of variety, so don't expect a whole album of swing jazz. Brick and Song For The Dumped together are an example.
They aren't a new BHG, but I think I will give that matter a rest. This is just good music, and anybody who likes music will probally want to give this a try (I mean real music, so ______ off hop-pop fans).

And don't forget to give me back my black t-shirt.......2007-04-10
Fold's newly minted celebrity is given a revenge-of-the-nerds bashing in "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces," as an Elton-styled piano riff floats along under the lyric "if you really want to see me check the papers and the TV/Look who's telling who what to do." Even nastier in the smackdown dept is "Song For The Dumped," where the jilted Folds gives one of the most riotous kiss-offs in pop history. Since the punch line would get my review booted, I won't repeat it here. Just suffice it to say that every geeky guy that got dumped just as you thought you were king of the world will get a good laugh from this particular song.
But Folds also was developing the serious side that eventually blossomed in full on his terrific "Rockin' the Suburbs." "Whatever and Ever Amen" broke through on the strength of "Brick," which chronicled a crushed boyfriend as he takes his pregnant girlfriend to an abortion clinic. The most amazing thing about "Brick" is its utter lack of judgmental tone. It is a classic, and easily one of the best - if not the most unlikely - hit singles of the 90's.
Folds doesn't always hit the bull's-eye, as "Steven's Last Night In Town" and "Cigarette" show. But for most of the original CD's 12 songs, Folds was showing he could put snap into his eclectic brand of pop. As for the bonus material, well, there was a reason they were B-sides. The bands' run through "Video Killed The Radio Star" is pretty good, but The Flaming Lips cover pales after a few listens. Instrumentals and band conversation do not qualify as a "bonus" to me. And if the best you can add is a non-sense take of "Song For the Dumped," then spare me the added material. It's just a distraction from a really great album. Burn yourself the remaster minus the added tracks. You'll enjoy it more.
Fantastic!.......2007-03-10
Good CD.......2007-01-11
A high quality artist.......2006-08-07
Saw them on soundstage (PBS) and was intrigued. Ben Folds is a Billy Joel but with more of a cutting edge. He is a very real, very high quality artist, pianist, singer and songwriter. The band is great, lots of space between the instruments (just like Cream, J H Experience, Police). The main songs are great and the extras also are interesting.
Besides great piano playing, the bass player is great as well. This is the type of band where you'll want all of their cds b/c they are of high quality. Sounds of the Suburbs is also a great cd.
Ben Folds has a solo/live/piano only album w/his best songs but stick with the recorded versions b/c the bass and drums are vital components of those songs.
