With One Plus One Is One, lovable, romantic, woolly-hat-clad eccentric Damon Gough has produced his best album since his glorious debut (The Hour of Bewilderbeast). With Badly Drawn Boy shunning LA in favor of a Manchester studio and with Andy Votel back at the production helm One Plus One is a wry, self-mocking, and exquisitely personal album that finds Gough re-evaluating the sudden fame that found him working with Joan Collins, recording soundtracks, and residing in California.

The opening title track sets the mood with Gough exhaustedly intoning "Back to being who I was before/ Open up your door/ Give me some peace/ Hold me now/ Everybody is waiting outside." Other highlights include the playfully clumsy rhythms of "Four Leaf Clover" and the epic and ingenious "Holy Grail," the latter coming complete with weaving flute, children's choir, pounding piano, and lyrics able to break a heart at half a listen. Charming, disheveled, and unpretentious throughout, One Plus One Is One is a superb comeback that will warm the hearts and delight the ears of his loyal fan base. --Christopher Barrett

1 out of 5 stars Sorely Disappointed.......2006-08-15

I do not like this album. The tunes on this are unimpressive, and the lyrics are monotonous and similarly unimpressive. I ordered it on reading a few reviews and let me make clear it is nothing like Bewilderbeast (which is excellent), if you are a BDB fan. I even think Have you Fed the Fish Today is a better album overall.

4 out of 5 stars The Best BDB Album!.......2005-11-04

If I could I would give this album 4 stars and a half. It nearly apporaches perfection. If the hour of the bewilderbeast is an amazing album. This for me, was done with more effort. This album remindsme of being in a nice and comfortable bar listening to a guy playing his acoustic guitar and singing these songs. Easy to digest, easy to like. My fave tracks are: One plus one is one, This is that new song, Another devil dies, Year of the rat (probably my BDB fave), and Logic of a friend. This album won't dissapoint you. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Return to Bewilderbeast.......2005-09-06

One Plus One Is One is a return to the emotional modern folk sound BDB cultivated on the magnificient Hour of Bewilderbeast album. His previous two releases were a bit of a detour: they were interesting but didn't have the same emotional impact. 1+1=1 sounds like Damon Gough has gotten back onto the path of Bewilderbeast, but matured along the way and progressed from there into new territory. The album has nothing but great songs on it. The lyrics in "This is That New Song" about a failed relationship are wonderful. "Summertime in Wintertime" sounds like Damon is channeling Jethro Tull with some wild rock'n'roll flute. Another Devil Dies, Four Leaf Clover, and Holy Grail stand out as memorable favorites, but really it's hard to pick favorites because all the songs are so good.

4 out of 5 stars Like a fine wine..........2005-07-19

Being a huge BDB fan, I really wanted to love this CD. He's extremely talented and refreshing compared to a lot of the junk out there.

Having listened to it many times through, I have decided this CD gets better with time. My first listen to One Plus One is One left me feeling dissapointed. I didn't like the direction he went in, and I felt like he was trying too hard after getting so much criticism with Have You Fed the Fish.

I gave the CD a rest, but then one day I felt like giving it another try. To my suprise, some of the songs I originally didn't care for, I started to like. As I kept listening to it, I really began to enjoy it.

Something tells me this CD will be on the extremes--Either you love it or hate it--Don't be too quick to dismiss this CD, though...give it some time. You just may end up really liking it!

5 out of 5 stars A new fan is born!.......2005-03-07

I am new to Badly Drawn Boy. I discovered him, probably like many, through the film 'About a Boy',and was drawn in by his simple and yet effective melodies. I have been yearning for some mellow, guitar, songwriter kind of music recently, and this is far beyond that!
This album is wonderful. He has an amazing ability to write beautiful and melodic songs, many with just a string section, some great chords and a guitar. And yet there are also some epic songs on here, as mentioned before, 'Holy Grail' has a childrens choir and the song somehow works really well with all the funky experimental stuff going on.
This album is perfect for sitting and chilling to. I like to study to it alot! It has catchy upbeat tunes to keep you motivated, and yet it isn't at all distracting.
At least take a listen to 'One Plus One Is One' , 'This is That New Song' and 'Year of The Rat' to give you a feel for this album, and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Gedda in 60's and early 70's.......2003-08-21

Nicolai Gedda, a vocal wonder of the post-WWII Europe is in great form in live selections presented on this CD.
The French opera arias, particularly Berlioz and Gounod, required stellar high B's and C's plus ability to shift the registers seemlessly. Well, Gedda dispite his accent, was indeed perfect for this material. He will make you hold your breath every time he hits those high notes and each of these notes is crystal clear and dead-center on pitch.
For me personally, the best part of the disc is a 1971 recital of Russian art songs by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Gedda sings with a lot of feeling and is not afraid to "invent" -- check out the messa voce, or rubato that he adds. "Where art thou, little star" is heart-gripping in its beauty.
Unfortunately, the recital is clearly not presented in its entirety. I just hope Gala will release the full version some time soon.
Of course, all the selections are "live". But that's not a serious problem here (unlike many other Gala CDs made almost unlistenable by caughs and other noises). Yes, there are a few distractions, but not enough to take away from pure joy of Gedda's singing.

5 out of 5 stars A recording that does Gedda justice.......2003-04-05

This compilation disc from Gala presents the artistry and musicianship of Nicolai Gedda. He is a great tenor. His voice may not be the most beautiful, but it certainly is pleasant to hear. He has an excellent top register; no high note is beyond his reach. His pianissimos, not really given their due here with Gala's selections of songs and arias, are really top-rate and extremely beautiful. If you want to hear his lovely pianissimos, get the hard-to-find "Opera Arias: Nicolai Gedda". The selection of arias and songs here is wonderful. Also included is a wonderful duet from "Prince Igor" sung in Russian and several Russian songs by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff. I didn't care much for the Russian songs, but Gedda performed them very well with perfect Russian diction. The French arias are amazingly well done. If you have been left unmoved by his versions of Don José's Flower Song from his two studio recordings of "Carmen", you will not be disappointed with the version included here. This version is sung with great emotional involvement. It comes from the 1954 live recording of "Carmen" with Giulietta Simionato and Herbert von Karajan. Gedda has the flexibility and the high D for the "Les Huguenots" aria. His renditions of the two Gounod arias are wonderful and his high notes are superb. Énée's aria from "Les Troyens" is very well done. He even attempts a trill in it. A recently released live recording of a performance of "Les Troyens" with Gedda, Horne, and Verrett is available. Check it out. Gedda may be too light of voice for such a heavy role as Énée, but who could resist such stylish, superb singing and French diction? He also can scale all the dangerous heights and dramatic demands of the fiendishly difficult role. The sound of this compilation is surprisingly good. There is some static, but it never becomes distracting. Audience noise is minimal to nonexistent. Applause is found only on a few tracks and is always appropriate. All in all, a worthwhile purchase at a remarkably low price!

5 out of 5 stars It is the voice of destiny........2002-09-01

If I say that it is nice I'll say nothing. Gedda's voice is really juicy and romantic and vocalize school is enormously mastered. When you hear to it, the first thought is that such voice cannot to be belonged to real, live person. It is for angel's not for real man.

5 out of 5 stars This is some of the finest singing ever recorded.......1999-05-12

Although strangely forgotten by the opera world and overshadowed by the overwhelming publicity surrounding the three tenors (Carreras, Domingo, and Pavoroti), Gedda ought to be recognized as the greatest living tenor. His artistry, technique, musicianship, and individuality are second to none. Buy this CD and delight in some of his best work. There are presently no singers that even approach the mastery of the repetoire recorded on this album which Gedda sings perfectly and easily. His refinement and power are unexcelled. (No, the three tenors don't hold a candle to him. In fact, comparing Gedda to them is a bit like comparing a halogen bulb to a candle. Very nice candles, yes, but no match for an artist of his caliber.)

5 out of 5 stars What a master singer!!!.......1999-01-20

This is a truly wonderful recording of the tenor, who I feel, is the greatest in the second half of the 20th Century. Maestro Gedda sings repetoire from the lyric Gerrard in Lakme to the dramatic Raoul in Les Hugeunots all with stylish ease and elan. Gedda had the most beautiful high notes in the business. These are all live performances and the span of time is from 1954 (Carmen, with von Karajan) to 1972 (Les Hugeunots). Finally, on CD, one gets to hear Maestro Gedda sing Lenski's Aria from Eugene Onegin, more beautiful and sumptuous than any other Tenor before or since. Also the last 9 tracks are Russian songs and this is some of the most beautiful singing heard anywhere (also done live).

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Debut!.......2004-04-06

Don't let the independent label scare you off; if you like CCM artists like Michael W. Smith and Bryan Duncan, you'll love this CD. Jono has a wonderful voice and he's working with some great pop, pop/rock, and R&B material here. Catchy melodies, compelling lyrics. It's hard to pick a favorite, because they're all good. But "You Are Holy," "Jesus Now," "Before I Run," and "The Wonder" are likely to to be fan favorites. Unlike most independent releases, this one has top production values and rich arrangements. Certainly a worthy addition to your CD collection!

Third Album from the Illustrious and Elusive Damon Gough.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a take 'er easy rock record.......2005-09-10

Sounds like Damon had a bunch of songs lying around and bashed 'em out in a couple days in his garage. This record has a really loose, almost sloppy feel, but it usually works. The kids choir is super cool. I like this record, but I hope the next one has a better work ethic behind it.

4 out of 5 stars One plus one equals..........2005-04-19

Lovably eccentric musician Damon Gough (also known as Badly Drawn Boy) is best known for the ingenious debut "Hour of Bewilderbeast," and for the quirky, appealing soundtrack of the Hugh Grant film "About A Boy." Now he returns with a new album, twisting his fatigue into a pensive, heartbreakingly earnest album, "One Plus One Is One."

He starts off steady with his epic piano melodies in the title track, paired with heartfelt pleas of "Please give me some peace," followed by the folky splendor of "Easy Love" and "This is That New Song." He sticks to a darker sound in the steady piano of "Another Devil Dies" and "Logic of a Friend," or the vaguely eerie "Life Turned Upside-Down."

But rock and depth aside, there's a vaguely whimsical side to Damon Gough in this album, as evidenced by the weird choruses of "Year of the Rat" and "Holy Grail." If that children's choir doesn't put you off, nothing will. "Four-Leaf Clover" has a sort of fun, frolic-in-the-sunshine sound, but its upbeat quality is kind of forced.

Ah, Badly Drawn Boy. Is there anyone who doesn't love this guy? His earnest brand of folk-pop has a strangely soothing quality, and his brilliant musicianship and songs don't hurt either. He stretches in a few of the wrong directions in "One Plus One Is One," but those flaws don't detract much from the enjoyability of this album.

The lo-fi texture of "Bewilderbeast" is long gone, and the result is very polished, but not in a slick way. Gough's mellow vocals blend with his gentle percussion, folky guitar riffs, an occasional flute melody, and some subtle string arrangements. And of course -- the piano! Gough resculpts the piano into heavy, steady arrangements, or sparkling little melodies.

But Badly Drawn Boy himself is the best instrument. His mellow voice gives a sort of thoughtful air to even the lightest of songs. And the songs vary a lot: there's the vaguely angry "Another Devil Dies," where Gough announces "The hatred will tear us apart/Another devil will take out your heart." But he pairs it to the title track, with its fatigued pleas for solitude, or the quiet pondering of how "things didn't turn out/Quite the way that you dreamt about/But it still feels right."

"One Plus One Is One" is not quite Badly Drawn Boy's best, but taken alone it's still a heartfelt, gentle album. He just needs to tone down the choir and the sunniness, and everything ought to be fine.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Bewilderbeast.......2004-08-23

One Plus One Is One is a return to the emotional modern folk sound BDB cultivated on the magnificient Hour of Bewilderbeast album.

        Album Description

Ladies and Gentlemen, Pimps, Gangstaz and Hustlerz, We finally present you long awaited album from Skool-Buzz titled "International Hustler". It is packed with 15 hot blazing joints and it's IN STORES NOW!!!. You can buy it on this website now and it will be shipped out to you within 24 hours. If you live in the CHICAGO area, you can get it in these stores: "GEORGES MUSIC ROOM", "THE TIP CDS", "DR WAX", "THE GROOVE" In Evanston, "Hi-FI", "RECKLESS RECORDS" and all other mom & pops Stores. My advice to you is "Don't sleep on this album". There are so many great stories behind the making of this album which will surely make it a classic album someday. The album is being released under Skool Buzz's independent label called Blaq Bone Records Inc. The album also features some other Chicago artists like "H.S" who appeared on two tracks: "Get Ya Own" and "This Is A Warning". Also featured on the album is "Vicious", who dropped a verse on the ferocious track 2, called "! Bang This". The album is filled with classic cuts like "What's Wrong" which is like a rebellious weed smokers joint. Another hot track is "Miranda Rights" which is a deep cut and the title is self explanatory. If you've ever been bagged b/4, then peep this joint out.

Totally, the album is hit; coupled with the fact that the whole album was written and PRODUCED by non other than Skool Buzz. This is something a lot of artist cannot boast of these days. The sound on this album is totally new and different from most hip-hop songs out there. Skool Buzz is not just another hip-hop artist. Rather, he is a very talented Producer/Artist who sort of reminds me of a young Dr Dre in the making. This is not a direct comparison to the doctor himself, but Skool-Buzz is a sure talent who can both produce and write a whole album and still give you 100 percent.

So, all you true hip-hop headz, we are not here to boast about how deep the album is, but we want you go out and COP/BUY/STEAL/HIJACK or KIDNAP this first album by Skool-Buzz titled "International Hustler", and bear witness to the rising of a new hip-hop musical force.
