5 out of 5 stars Crème de la crème.......2007-01-18

Best Cale in my opinion, must-have for anyone interested in blues beyond the founding fathers (L. Hopkins, R. Johnson, M. Waters, H. Wolf). I first heard songs from this record as a grad student in Berkeley, recently arrived from Brazil in 1983, on KFOG, the rock SF station. They used to play Bringing it Back and it took me a few auditions to get the name of the artist. When I did I went to the Tower store on Durant and bought it. Then I realized he was the composer of After Midnight (known through Clapton's version), and Cale has been a favourite since. His last, a partnership with Clapton (Road to Escondido) is also very good, in fact, Clapton is better there than in most of his solo albums, and his singing somehow lost the usual high-key stridency, certainly influenced by the zen-like ways of Cale. Naturally, with its fairy-tale like cover, would be among my DIDs. By the way, one also guesses, through this record, a strong influence on M. Knopfler , both as guitar man and composer. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing it back.......2006-09-01

I have trouble deciding my favourite Cale's album but this one is a strong candidate for the first place (the other ones are "Okie" and "Shades" and, to some extent, his latest Live recordings).
"Naturally" features the original "After Midnight" that many Clapton fans will recognize, though they are unaware of being Cale's composition. Actually few people know that Clapton himself declared that Cale's music was like mentorship to him.
This is a very misty album. Due to the recording, all tunes have a shadow of damping of the hi-key dynamics which make them more fit for the general atmosphere of the music. I've always wondered if it's not a trick of the recording engineer because the vinyl is exactly the same. The music is absolutely marvelous. I have it also on the vinyl but I order it on CD because I listen it VERY often. "Magnolia" and "After Midnight" are may favourites. Listening these tunes I feel the same as being awakened from a beautiful dream in a warm summer morning. Very mellow but not sweet, exactly as they should be. The cover of the CD says it all: it is like Alice in Wonderland.

5 out of 5 stars Thats why they call him the breeze.......2005-10-11

I have to admit that i stumbled on this cd accidentally , i knew who jj cale was , i knew his songs , but i never actually listened to his versions of his own songs like they call me the breeze and after midnight, i only bought it because i have a hidden urge to buy all the albums which were originally released between 1969 and 1973 . I just cant put to words how this album moved my soul (now i own all j j cale albums!) from the concentrated guitar work to the smoky singing of j j to the sheer genius songwriting which has influenced many including eric clapton himself! I urge every true music lover to buy this album , this cannot be compared to anything else.

5 out of 5 stars Cale's music vs the shrillness of marketing.......2005-06-05

Listen to the music and you can *HEAR* the essense of
a musician who eschewed the crassness of marketing his work.
Marketing stars is shrill-- Cale's music is anything but.
Join us -- experience the ease and joy of discovering such
thoughtful sounds long ago buried by all the hype
for high-profile music which is essentially pushy/shrill.
Non-shrill and "laid back" does NOT mean 'without content.'
Cale's music is different -- you get drawn into the
music rather than having it pushed in your face.
Experience the feeling of being drawn into the soft textures of Cale's "After Midnight"
vs the force coming at you from the tempo in Clapton's "After Midnight."

5 out of 5 stars fantastic album .......2005-05-30

I was lucky enough to live in a town when I was a kid that had a great radio station. No top 40, just great music. Exposed me to a lot of music that nobody else played. I was lucky enough to hear songs off of this album, bought it when it first came out, and then saw him in concert! He was great, and I was amazed that he was playing a cheap banged-up Harmony guitar, just like I had bought at Sears for about $50 (yeah, you could buy guitars at Sears back then). I saw him on a concert tape or tv years later, and he was still playing that old guitar.

Just saw him on the "Crossroads Guitar Festival" DVD. I would get this album and that DVD.

Sometimes it takes a Sharon Jones to remind us that being a great performer is not necessarily the same as being a great Gap model, and vice versa. To believe the hype, exterior aesthetics kept this soul/funk singer from getting the recognition she deserved early in her career. Now she's pushing 50, but Naturally (Jones' second full-length album with the Dap-Kings) proves that she can still sing circles around just about anything in hot pants.

When it comes to running down the great songs on this CD, it's hard to know where to begin. "How Long Do I have to Wait for You" is as smooth and winning as the irresistible lovers Jones sings about on many of these tracks. Most of the material deals with matters of the heart, although Jones' rendition of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" reveals her political side. (In live performances Jones goes even further, singing a plan to stop paying taxes.) "Stranded in Your Love" is like a warm-weather version of "Baby It's Cold Outside." And the big romantic finish on this album, "All Over Again" must immediately be taken up as the new, must-play, wedding dance song. Naturally is a gift to R&B and should help the genre win new fans--with an album this infectious, you'd have to be made of stone to resist the funk. --Leah Weathersby

5 out of 5 stars You need to hear her version of "This Land is Your Land".......2007-01-10

New singer, climbed her way to the national scene late in life. She was working until recently as a security guard or something, but man has she got talent. The fact that she wasn't discovered until recently is an indictment against the record industry and their disproportionate interest in the "look" of singers. No, she's not pretty in the Britney Spears/Paris Hilton kind of way, but she has a simply gorgeous voice which she uses to sing R and B with a lot of funk and soul. If you like the old Motown sounds, or 70s funk, and who doesn't by the way, you can't help but love this CD. It's not just her remarkable talents, her band includes an excellent horn section, an impressive rhythm section, and a monster of a bass player who seems to be the band leader. Get this CD, check out the Daptone label for other funky soul r and b CD's you should have, and next chance you can, see the DapKings live. You ever noticed how race, ethnicity, age, nationality, social class, and sometimes even gender and sexual orienation segregates music audiences? Well it's the opposite with the old Motown sound, you start playing that stuff to just about any crowd and people start dancing and singing along. Same thing with this Sharon Jones stuff, in concert, they get an pretty diverse crowd of fans.

5 out of 5 stars A return to 60's&70's soul.......2006-11-05

As a longtime collector of 60's and 70's soul music, this compilation gives me hope that some artists and performers are still refusing to let
this style of music disappear.
This is serious bare bones, back to basics stuff.
The funk drives hard and the soul is sweet and danceable.
I love this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT !!!!.......2006-05-12

The fella from Leeds whose review is posted as the first one says it all. I just wanted to say how much i LOVE this excellent album and how i can't stop listening to it!!!! It's everything you want from music! It's just sheer joy and satisfaction of listening to a great tune and real musicians whose love for the music they're making shine through.

I love all the songs on it. My most favorites are My Man Is A Mean Man and Your Thing Is A Drag. I'm so happy i discovered great Ms.Jones and her equally great band! Do yourself a favor and check this out. I'm sure you'll end up buying it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Gimme an "S"! For SOUL........2006-01-29

Sometimes I think I'm the only person under 30 who really knows what soul is. But I had the very fortunate experience of seeing Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings live recently and half of the faces in the audience were as young if not younger than mine. Sharon dances without choreography and the Dap Kings jammed without synthesizers. This is music the way it was meant to be. The revolution might not be televised, but it will be on stage, sold on Amazon, and headquartered in Brooklyn.

5 out of 5 stars Sharon Jones acts natural..........2006-01-10

I love Sharon Jones! Her voice oozes soul and sass, and the Dap Kings back her with a groove that makes it impossible to stay still once you hear it. This is their second CD, and contains more ballad oriented material than their hard hitting first disc, "Dap Dippin". However, this disc is not lacking in grooves. "How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?" is so catchy its addictive. I have played this song so many times its not even funny. "This Land Is Your Land" is a VERY creative cover of the Woody Guthrie standard. Its a far cry from the original version! Also noteworthy is Sharon Jones' put down of a lover on "Your Thing Is A Drag". The band really lays down a groove on this one and Sharon Jones' vocals get the guy GOOD. If you liked the first album by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, you should definitely pick this one up, they continue to be the best funk band around.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of the most creative rock records around.......2007-03-21

Clearly these guys were way ahead of their time. Their use of the saxophones in the arrangements of the tunes is very clever. The whole album has a real joyous, upbeat feel to it. I had the album as a teenager and have recently purchased the cd, recalling how much I enjoyed the music. I have become a fervent jazz fan since and don't listen to much rock, but I find this album irresistable. I like the way the lyrics fit the songs, and though I don't relate much to the "get high" philosophy in one of the songs, most of them are about self realization and have a good positive message. There is a real gold mine here of tunes that current bands (even jazz bands like mine) could pick up on because the songs really have weathered well and I find they are as highly relevant today as when the album first came out. For example, check out Misery Isn't Free, Things are Getting Better, Everywhere, Black and Blue Rainbow, and or course Freedom.

The main thing I like about the album is Bill Champlin's composition and arrangements. He is a fine songwriter and one of the best vocalists I have ever heard. He combines many genres with some blues, jazz, rock, r&b and soul.

I'd say the Sons of Champlin, together with the Beatles and a maybe a few others were the most creative bands of their time. And they are still together! Check out some of the new stuff! The horn arrangements are out of this world! Which makes you wonder ... Why on earth did so few people catch on??

5 out of 5 stars This album changed my life.......2006-09-13

Nothing can describe the feeling of walking into the Winterland Arena in 1969 (a little late) and hearing the sound of those horns reverberating off the wall as I approached the main hall. The song was "Love of a Woman" and it caught my heart in a way that has only been musically rivaled by the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. They completely stole the show from the two bands they opened for: The Grateful Dead followed by The Jefferson Airplane. (just think about that for a minute and you'll be asking yourself the same question I asked in 1969 - who the hell are these guys?).

Then, I watched as these "hippies" played song after song which sustained the vibe for the entire set. Incredibly, after every song, they would all change instruments (or it seemed that way). It remains a strong vivid image in my memory.

Regarding "Loosen Up Naturally" it has two powerful elements going for it. 1) an unequaled vibe of "this music makes me feel good" - I don't know why or how, and I don't care - it's fantastic. And 2) the Bill Champlin lyrics are deeper, stronger, more understandable and more meaningful than any composer I've ever heard. He knew his heart and poured his feelings into his lyrics. His now famous voice is nothing short of spectacular.

Having seen this band in all it's incarnations, Loosen up Naturally is a testement to what good San Francisco Hippie Horn bands with a huge dose of soul were supposed to sound like. They were true originals and this album holds up much better than most albums over 35 years old.

If you're new to the Hippie band sound, or think that the music was not any good because the musicians were too high, (which was quite common in those days), this album will change your view and you'll be a fan for life.

Bill Champlin is a national treasure and this album should be enshrined as a masterpiece.

Listen to it, find your smile, and help the world be a better place.

5 out of 5 stars The best music from the best funk-rock band EVER!.......2006-01-23

I think these guys were the second big horn-based rock band to come out of the post-Beatles era. They came just after Al Kooper's B,S&T and before Chicago Transit Authority and Tower of Power. Having recently re-discovered it, I think this is the best and most interesting album from anyone of this ilk that I've heard and the powerful lyrics and music have held up extremely well over the decades. Sixty-plus minutes of music and every second is a joy to listen to. Even the 14+ minute "Freedom" finale, unlike the self-indulgent jams many bands did at the time, seems way too short.

My friend and I nearly wore this double LP out in the first year he bought it in 1969 (I think) but I hadn't listened to it in decades. Recently, while digitizing some of my LP's, I recalled how much I like it, so I cued it up. I was amazed - I liked it as much as I ever did. The band came out of the SF hippie scene so the lyrics deal with things that are typical of that time and place, but aren't dated like so much other music of the time. Both the music and lyrics are optimistic, upbeat and even thought-provoking, but both are very well-grounded and as a result, both are as relevant and enjoyable now as they were in 1968 when it was released.

5 out of 5 stars "Got to be free".......2005-03-16

When the double album first appeared, the local college radio station started playing the 14 minute plus "Freedom" often but I only had to hear it once to love it. The entire album turned out to be amazing and its a sound you won't find anywhere else. The great horn work continued with the 2nd album "The Sons", but even without the horns, the Sons were outstanding and one of a kind, as on the later releases "Follow Your Heart" and "Circle Filled With Love". There's a life-affirming beauty in these songs that got stronger release by release, but it's already present in great power in this first album. Here's the pure spirit of the hippie late '60's and early '70's as found in few other ways nowadays.

If you like horns, this album is the rival of "Chicago Transit Authority". And if there's a hippie somewhere inside of you, these are your lyrics. In recent years, an increasing number of releases by the "Sons" have been re-issued, along with some recent live material from the re-formed band, so if you start with "Loosen Up Naturally", you can then follow the path of the Sons from the late 60's on.

5 out of 5 stars This is a 10-Star Album, one of the greatest of all-time!!!.......2005-02-17

As many times as I've seen the Sons over the years, and as amazing musicians as they are, it's the lyrics that are the most important to me. These songs are blessings and prayers that STILL run through every particle of my being. Plus, you have one of the greatest dudes/guitarists sending the most beautiful, shredding guitar licks you've ever heard--Terry Haggerty. It's some of the most amazing, joyous music ever. ENJOY!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing for deep hypnosis.......2004-12-26

I own several other hypnosis CDs but none of them totally, completely relaxed me to the depth of total hypnosis. I'm so glad I finally found this one. It works! It goes beyond imagery and meditation and will take you into total hyponosis - the kind of therapeutic hypnosis that you get in a therapist's office. The narrator's voice is soothing and there is no corny music or annoying background sounds. I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing piece of material.......2003-11-14

This cd can help anyone! Everyone can benefit from this cd whether you have severe sleep or relaxation disorders or just want to wind down after a long day of work. Everyone should buy this cd. Dr.Walton has come up with a full proof system to relax you and ultimately make you fall into the deepest and most peaceful sleep you've ever experienced. The first day I tried this CD I was automatically hooked. Within fifteen minutes of listening to it I was relaxed and already half asleep. I would recomend this cd to anyone. It's truly an amazing item.

5 out of 5 stars No more drugs, after 6 mos of insomnia!!.......2003-08-02

After 75 mg of benadryl a night, many cups of relaxing tea, mutiple subliminal and rain forest cds, I decided to try hypnosis. I knew I was a good candidate having been hypnotized before. Once I started listening to the CD I almost never hear the end of the 1st hypnotic session. I loop it on my cd player with the delta sleep system all night. I am sleeping so much better. I was getting scared to go to bed because restful sleep was getting so difficult. Told my Doctor and she was pleased, she also said the subliminal tapes work much better for you if you are hypnotized. Best $$$ I have ever spent!!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and Effective.......2002-11-27

This CD really suprised me. I find it engaging and effective. It really helps me after a stressful day or to fall asleep on nights I have trouble. The audio quality of this CD is very good. I especially like the tones he uses during the hypnosis.

5 out of 5 stars Best relaxation tape I have ever owned.......2002-03-19

I found Hypnotapes to really reach me in ways others have not. I felt totally immersed in peace and serenity and successfully quieted stomach cramps, tension headaches and the stress associated with a very intense work situation. I have recommended it to friends and have also invited friends to experience the tape with me.

3 out of 5 stars MASTERING: NOT BAD, BUT NOT THE BEST.......2007-02-24

These Gott remastered discs sound decent, will probably sate the average person's TDN appetite, and being 2-fers, are a pretty good deal.

However, the TDN audio benchmarks are the 2002, 24-bit Universal Japan remasters of first five albums. If you are looking for THE best TDN audio, those CD's are a step above any and all other domestic and foreign versions available, including the Gott series.

Unfortunately, all five UJ-TDN titles went out-of-print shortly after their issue, and they have not been re-released. Hopefully, that situation will be rectified at some point in the future.

As all of the original TDN LP album covers were very creative & artistic productions, these albums would all also be a major candidate for CD LP-mini-sleeve packaging.

A sharp eye on eBay may turn these up. For reference, and double-checking with any potential seller, the OBI/spine catalog numbers are:

One - UICY-3370 Amazon link: One
Suitable For Framing - UICY-3371 Amazon link: Suitable for Framing
Captured Live At The Forum - UICY-3372
It Ain't Easy - UICY-3373 Amazon link: It Ain't Easy
Naturally - UICY-3374 Amazon link: Naturally

These masters may or may not be on UJ's TDN 2003 "The Collection", which is currently available, but I have not heard. The Japanese remasters are also superior to the domestic remastered 2004 "The Complete Hit Singles".

Again, as most people originally heard these songs coming out of an AM radio, they will probably be more than satisfied with the Gott's. They are certainly better than the horrid-sounding domestic MCA CD's, which are all derived from nearly 40-year-old LP-EQ'd masters.

However, while the spotlight was always cast on the singers, TDN had an amazing band, including an absolute genius in keyboard player Jimmy Greenspoon. The Japanese remasters allow the brilliance of that superb musicianship to be heard in greater detail and clarity than any other editions.

As an aside, while stars like Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman however deservedly had the keyboard-god-limelight in that era, when you think about it, it's probably safe to state that no other keysman was heard by more people in that generation than Jimmy Greenspoon. Yes, the TDN vocals were unique and timeless, and I take nothing from those three talented cats, but JG was the glue that brought everything together.

I own approximately 5000 CD's, and "Out In The Country", with JG's evocative B3 melody, is in my top ten favorite songs of all time. The next time you listen to any TDN album, focus on his playing, and you'll get it.

I've also read his tell-all book. It's quite amazing that TDN was able to function, much less generate the top studio performances that comprised all those monster hits, in the virtually permanent drug-addled state they were in.

It is fortuitous that Jimmy Greenspoon not only conquered and survived his addictions, but that he still performs with TDN to this day, because there is no Three Dog Night without him.

5 out of 5 stars Two Excellent Albums On One Cd And Remastered Too!.......2006-05-19

I have to hand it to the British label Gott Discs, they are giving you alot of music for your hard earned cash. First they release Three Night's first two albums "Three Dog Night" (1969) and "Suitable For Framing" (1969) on one remastered disc and now we get the band's third and forth studio albums "It Ain't Easy" (1970) and "Naturally" (1971). Three Dog Night needs no introduction as they were one of the late sixties/early seventies most popular rock acts. Their music was a combination of r&b and rock. Three lead singers alternated on songs and their harmonizing equalled that of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. "It Ain't Easy" released in 1970 included the smash hits "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)", and "Out In The Country". Their version of "Your Song" (written by Elton John) is equally if not better than John's. Other excellent songs are "Woman", "Cowboy", and "Rock And Roll Widow". "Naturally" released in 1971 contained the massive hit "Joy To The World" as well as several more hits in "One Man Band" and "Liar". Other notable songs are "I Can Hear You Calling", "I'll Be Creepin'" and "Fire Eater" (Keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon and guitarist Michael Allsop are incredible on this instrumental track). Nicely remastered, the jewel box that houses the cd fits into an attractive slipcase. Why MCA Records here in America couldn't remaster and release Three Dog Night's catalog is a mystery. Maybe someday they'll get their act together and see the light of day and release the entire catalog. This twofer is a must have for Three Dog Night fans as well as lovers of classic rock.

5 out of 5 stars A Golden Oldie.......2007-04-12

I was a huge fan and had every LP this talented group recorded. I never could find this one on CD, until I started buying from here. I wore this LP out as a teen, had to replace it 4 times. It was the only LP I ever owned that got played from beginning to end. Although I am a Chuck Negron fan and even like the song , "Joy To The World" is the worse track on this CD. "I've Got Enough Heartache" is by far the best track Three Dog Night recorded with all 3 singers, with "Heavy Church" following a close 2nd . On this CD "Sunlight" is the best Solo. Too bad they were in the shadows of the hits off this CD, had they been on another LP they would of made their marks on the charts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overall--especially Heavy Church.......2004-02-19

Overall this is indeed a great album, but Heavy Church truly stands out as the best song for me. Oddly enough, I find it almost impossible to find any lyrics for the song and hardly even any mentioning of it (a Google search for "'heavy church' naturally" yields just over 100 results). 'Tis a shame that this album didn't gain the popularity it deserved.

5 out of 5 stars Versatility, variety, and very, very good.......2004-02-07

This 1970 album came at a time when Three Dog Night was just beginning to hit it big. Riding a huge wave of popularity, TDN was not only great in concert, but, as is evident in "Naturally", outstanding in the studio as well. The 7 members of the group all get their chances to dazzle in this varied production. The strengths of the album, of course, are found in four solid TDN staples, "Joy to the World", "One Man Band", "Liar", and "I Can Hear You Calling", but the icing on the cake is from the underrated gems that are present, such as "Heavy Church" with it's great harmony, the soulful "Sunlight", and the anthemic instrumental, "Fire Eater".

Even the casual classic rock fan knows of the great harmonies of vocalists Chuck Negron, Cory Wells, and Danny Hutton, but it's the rest of the band that really gets a chance to shine in "Natually". Floyd Sneed on drums is very capable, as is Joe Shermie on bass. The keyboards (especially the funky pop organ on "One Man Band") of Jimmy Greenspoon and the great guitar work of Mike Allsup rank with some of the best from the '70s.

If you're a fan of Three Dog Night and you've limited yourself just to the "Greatest Hits" and "Golden Biscuits", you're missing a treat in this album (and "Seven Separate Fools") if you don't have it as part of your collection. "Naturally" has aged well and remains probably the best album produced by TDN.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Three Dog Night's Fourth Album May Be Their Best!.......2004-01-25

Three Dog Night were on a roll at the beginning of the new 70's decade. They had already released three excellent albums ("Three Dog Night", "Suitable For Framing" and "Captured Live"). Their first album for the new decade was "It's Not Easy" which produced the hits "Mama (Told Me Not To Come)" and "Out In The Country". While that album was excellent, it was Three Dog Night's next release "Naturally" that produced their biggest hit with "Joy To The World". Other hits from the album were "One Man Band" and "Liar". But the album also had some other great songs such as the rockers "I'll Be Creepin'", "I Can Hear You Calling", "Fire Eater" (an instrumental rocking track which showcases Mike Allsop's extroadinary guitar playing as well as Jimmy Greenspoon's awesome keyboard skills), the soulful "I Can't Get Enough Of It", and "Sunlight" (an excellent acoustic guitar based slow song written by Jesse Collin Young). Three Dog Night were successful at utilizing three lead singers combining soul, rock and blues into a sound that was distinctly their own. I can't think of too many groups that could harmonize as well as Three Dog Night and it's no wonder they were the seventies most popular rock group. If there's one Three Dog Night cd you buy, this should be it, as "Naturally" was released when the group was at the peak of their musical career. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars It's only Natural.......2001-09-26

This is a great album as well. Probably my second favorite. This album gets any vote from me because I absolutely love their version of "Liar". I was also impressed with their version of Jesse Colin-Young's "Sunlight". Of course you've got the big hits "Joy To The World" and "One Man Band" that hold the album together. One particular song that stands out on this album for some reason is a track entitled "Heavy Church". You'll have to pick this CD up to understand it. I also like the instrumental track "Fire Eater". It adds a nice touch.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!.......2006-01-07

I had smoked for over 15 years about 1 1/2 - 2 packs a day. I was definitely a binge smoker and smoked out of habit, boredom, nerves. Like the other poster, I literally listened to this CD ONE TIME as I was going to bed, and the next day, I didn't smoke one cigarette. When I got a craving, I'd take a deep breath and exhale slowly (like the suggestion on the CD) and by the end of the breath, I'd stop and realize the craving was gone. It was that easy. If you smoke and think that nothing will work for you, I can't recommend this CD highly enough. It's been over a month now, I've stopped listening to the CD, and I haven't smoked at all and in fact, I have lost weight (the CD also gives a suggestion/guidance about not gaining weight). Every once in a while, if I am really tempted or in a really stressful period, I'll pop in the CD at night and listen to it, as a booster. But this time, I really feel like I have stopped smoking for life!

Thank you, Dr. Walton!

5 out of 5 stars only had one lesson.......2005-10-27

When I stopped smoking, I was at 10 cigarettes a day and on Zyban. I had been smoking for 7 years, and I spent most of that time trying to quit. Nothing worked for me.

I heard that hypnosis worked for some people, so I thought I would try this CD since it was one of the cheaper ones. I wasn't very motivated to quit. I wanted to see what hypnosis was like more than anything. But then I listened to the CD one evening and never touched a cigarette again. That was three months ago.

I can't say I never had a craving after that, but the stongest ones lasted less than a minute. It really helps to follow the directions and take breaks like normal, just instead of smoking, you're supposed to sip on some water. I find I'm reminded to breath a lot deeper then.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone whoes trying to quit.

4 out of 5 stars Solitude, Again..........2006-07-08

Not even my mother was a fan of Andy Williams. Why did I think that this would interest me? Because Williams chose my (then) favorite producer, the autocratic Richard Perry (Carly Simon, Harry Nilsson, Ringo Starr, Fanny!) to helm this 1973 release Solitaire. Unlike his usual releases, that relied heavily on material others had already made famous or otherwise put their indelible stamp on, this time he/they relied on lesser known songs.

The Nilsson songbook had been frequently tapped, but not for an album track such as the glorious "Remember," which is perfectly suited for Williams. Similarly, George Harrison's "That is All" is a treat. Just a short time before Karen & Richard took a stab at "Solitaire" Andy/Richard laid claim to one of Sedaka's "real" classics. Dipping into pleasant pop-ditty material, "Make it Easy for Me," "Getting Over You" & "Walk Right Back" work wonderfully.

The marvelous "The Dreamer," written (and performed) by London session pianist Nicky Hopkins, is simply perfect! The real treat beyond all others is/was Williams' powerfully subtle reading of the Dory Previn/Gato Barbieri "Last Tango in Paris." I only wish Ms. Previn had recorded it herself, but no such luck (regrettably, she never did record any of her film songs).

Of course, there were the weaker, done-to-death songs, such as Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," McCartney's "My Love," but they were forgivable in the larger scheme of things. Nearly every song on the album is perfectly arranged & (seemingly) lovingly performed.

As for Alone Again (Naturally), I never heard it until released in this 2-fer on CD. It is a step back as nearly every song is/was known before, but situated as it is here, before Solitaire, is feels like a nearly perfect companion, or "lead-in." Plus, there are at least a couple of remarkable covers. Dave Loggins' "Pieces of April" is perfectly lovely. Bacharach/David's "If I Could Go Back" is only marred by (now) dated guitars as well as spoken narrative, but the lovely lyrics & melody hold up. Gerry Beckley's (America) "I Need You," like the aforementioned "Remember," is a glove-fit for Williams.

On the lesser end, "Day by Day," from "Godspell" is abysmal. Flack/Hathaway own "Where is the Love," as Flack owns "The First Time Ever." Did anyone need another version of "Alone Again (Naturally)" or "The Long & Winding Road"? I never cared for Neil Diamond, so "Song Sung Blue" is just a waste of 3 minutes. Would have loved for "Amazing Grace" to have been more simply powerful (ala Judy Collins' acapella rendition), but no such luck. Still, like the Solitaire album, this is an Andy Williams recording I am glad too own.

And what better two albums to join together. Both titles allude to being alone. If half points were an option I'd have given this 3+1/2, so I rounded up.

5 out of 5 stars Andy & Perry.......2005-09-16

Andy Williams' original LP (and modified CD), Solitaire, has much in common with Perry Como's original LP (and also modified CD), And I Love You So, inasmuch as the high quality of these two respective albums is not dependent on the songs that either established or typify the two MOR, popular music superstars. Instead, the recordings reflect maturity and self assurance - the very contemporary song selections, and arrangements thereof, depend less on youthful vocal range and volume, and more on mature confidence and style - together with skilled production values (by Steve Perry and Chet Atkins, respectively) and superb sound engineering.

I personally would not select these recordings for their inclusion of popular, individual songs - more instead, for the whole album reflecting their best artistry. The 1970s and early 1980s was a period of some exceptional pop, rock, and transitional music trends (a baroque flourish atop a short pop renaissance) - many of my all time favorite LPs (and CDs) belong to this music period. This is Andy's best stuff - not his most popular, but simply his best!

5 out of 5 stars Solitaire alone would be a 5-star!.......2003-01-05

Solitaire is Andy's best album of the 70's, with producer Richard Perry turning the same magical trick for him as he did for Streisand: to shred their traditional pop sensibilities and usher in tons of contemporary attitudes.

As the recorded earlier Alone Again indicated, Andy had harbored such ambitions for quite a while now, but he always went about it by covering indiscriminantly from the Top 40's, from Dawn to David Cassidy. In fact, if the NOW series had been around, it would look exactly like an Andy Williams album. And the story would stop there: unfashionable MOR singer trying to catch up with the hit of the week.

Yet for every awkward moment that the song was far beneath the singer - and there had been alot around back then - there was always another absolutely divine moment waiting just a couple of songs later. In Alone Again, Pieces Of April and If I Could Go Back were such moments.

Solitaire has three equally gorgeous gems: the title track (Andy's hit BEFORE the Carpenters), Last Tango In Paris, and Harry Nilsson's Remember Christmas. But for once the rest of the album holds up well before these three highlights. Even the more familiar covers (of Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney & Andy's old labelmates the Everlys) work in the context of the whole album.

Unlike Barbra Streisand, Andy Williams didn't go on to become full fledged charttopper again, mainly because he had been there before and got other plans in life. But Solitaire proves he well could have.

5 out of 5 stars Andy at his very best!.......2002-05-17

Two great albums from "The Emperor of Easy" as he is known in the UK. "Solitaire" is truly an all-time classic album and sounds quite unlike other Andy Williams albums. It sounds as fresh and new as it did back in 1973 when it peaked at number three in the UK pop charts and stayed in the chart for an amazing twenty-six weeks. Songs by the likes of George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder sound like they were written especially for Andy. "Alone Again" finds Andy covering the hits of the day. Mostly love songs, this album sits well next to "Solitaire". Buy this cd with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Gems from the Master.......2002-05-03

Those of us in our late 30's and early 40's have too long brushed Andy Williams aside as an "old time singer", failing to recognize the genious of the man. While I have been a fan since early childhood, I had no idea what a really good singer he is, until listening to this, and other recent re-releases on CD for the first time. This double albums worth reminds me, and all lovers of great music, of the real, raw talent of the man. Recorded at what is now known to be the apex of his recording career, these were not huge commercial successes. In fact Williams left the US charts in 1972 (God Father Theme), not to return until 1998's We Need a Little Christmas.

Why Andy chose to record covers of others' music and not pound these, or other similar songs out in his own right, has long been a mystery. His name, closely associated with any song on this album (with the exception of Solitare which was a UK hit and earned Andy a 1976 Gold ALbum in the US--three years after release), Would have launched him onto the charts again at full speed. That said, this album reminds all of us what a really good singer Andy Williams is. His audiences in Branson and during his summer 2002 UK tour are in for a real treat in deed. Thanks Andy.

3 out of 5 stars This CD isn't there yet..........2007-06-08

I'm a big N7 fan, but this CD was recorded at a time before they adopted their signature mind-blowing instrumental sound. This album is just another acapella album. Look for their "What is it?" or "Ready II Fly" albums if you want to hear something truly amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Sound.......2007-03-08

I'm a big Take 6 fan so I have pretty sharp ears for that kind of sound. It's difficult to compare any other group with Take 6 because they're in a class by themself. However, Naturally Seven has done pretty well with their sound. 7 guys, tight harmony, rich sound...definitely a CD you can listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Gifted Vocal Group!.......2002-07-27

Wow, what a great album this is. Naturally Seven has put together a collection of amazingly smooth and tight sounding music that most everyone should hear. In case you missed it, Naturally Seven is the group that won the 1999 Harmony Sweepstakes in convincing fashion. This album is a product of that remarkable group of men made not long afterwards, hot off their win. This album is full of R&B heavy jazz songs and snippets. Snippets? Yes... such as the radio tag that N7 recorded for WDRG-AM in New York. That alone is a huge example of the tight, professional sound that these guys have. They also made a cute (and impressive) answering machine outgoing message. Or there is a little bit called Y'all Hear Dat as an intro for the next song (Train) that is full of atmosphere and style, as they imitate a train and a storyteller starts talking about "The Train". Doesn't sound like much with me trying to describe it, but believe me, it fits into the whole concept of this album being more of a story and a personal expression of what they do... and what they are. If you like tight harmony like the smooth sounds of Take 6, R&B, Jazz, Hip-hop and Soul then you got to get it, get it, get it!! -- Ken, GospelCrib.8m.com

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OUT THERE!!!!.......2002-02-13

These guys performed at my high school on Feb. 12, 2002 and I have NEVER been so impressed at a concert. They ripped up our school, and that is pretty hard since we are a catholic school nobody really wants to listen to GOSPEL music when we don't have to. I bought the CD right when I got home off the internet and I have never been more happy to spend [the] $. These guys kick butt! Not to mention Jamal is dead sexy, but that's another story...

I was fortunate enough to hear them perform live at my school (Pace Univ) on February 3, 2001 and they were awesome. They are so talented and they can sing any type of music. This is one of the few groups where each person posseses some type of talent. Unfortunately when they were there I didn't have any money to buy the CD but the day after I purchased it online and I received it a few days later and it was just as awesome as the live performance. This is something to be picked up.
