From the leadoff track, "Fizz," you might correctly surmise that Joydrop are a garagey, raucous, female-led pop band. But this Canadian foursome are also much more. Using samples and loops for an effect that is modern yet organic, Joydrop are not easily categorized. Their songs run the gamut from mellower adult alternative to modern rock, drawing logical comparisons to the Cardigans and Garbage, with a tad of Blondie swagger tossed in. With 14 songs adding up to more than an hour of music, Metasexual showcases the wide range and depth of the quintet's talents. Vocalist Tara Slone, whose opera and theater training serves her well, moves easily from pensive to powerful, her delicate yet forceful pipes the glue that binds Joydrop's sometimes disparate Euro-style pop. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2005-05-17

I am one VERY hard-to-please listener. It takes me forever to find something that I like, a band/singer I can really relate to.
But Joydrop came to be all that I ever wished for and more. This CD is one of the best I have ever heard. Everything - the music, the lyrics, even the garphics [of the cover] - this one is perfect.
My favorites:
1. Beautiful - The first Joydrop song I have ever heard [in the movie "My First Mister"], which made me find them. Beautiful and bittersweet, this song is something that anyone can relate to.
2. Strawberry Marigold - Melodic, quiet, and perfect in its calmness. This one played itself in my head forever.
3. Dream Today - Weird Techno-Pop-Rock mix, about the dangers of the modern world, yet full of hope.
4. Dog Star Radio - I don't know what's this about, really, but it's beautiful.
5. Until - Falling asleep to this song is one of the best things ever.

Five out of Five, because I can't give it more. This one's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Great album for something different........2005-02-13

Saw this band perform in Tallahassee and "WOW", what a show. I've seen alot of shows in my time but half way through this one I walked to the booth where they were selling the CD for 10 bucks and bought it. They were that good live. The album is great too. It's hard, fresh and full of kick.
Haven't heard much of Joydrop since though. I really thought we'd see more of them. But you know how it goes in the music buis.

Great album for your Library.

5 out of 5 stars Edgy, versatile debut.......2004-12-31

Their Sound/Their Music-Joydrop's debut CD is basically edgy pop-rock, with an emphasis on rock, but certain songs are synth pop or melodic shouting. They even have a few light, ballad type songs. Lead singer Tara Slone has a wide vocal range (she can sing sweetly and softly for one song, and be melodically shouting the next) and sounds good singing all styles of song.

Best songs-
2)"Beautiful"-This is a song about wanting to be as beautiful as that popular girl who can get away with anything and everything because of her looks. This song is just so awesome, not only because of the message or its relatability, but because it starts out very balladesque and switches over to melodic shouting for the chorus. Best lyrics: "If I was beautiful like you/I'd be quick to assume/They'd do anything to please me why not/I see their reaction when you walk into the room..." and "That would never never be/'Cause I'm not beautiful like you/I'm beautiful like me..."
3) "Breakdown"-Again, this is a song that starts out balladesque, but gets much louder (harsher might be a better word). The message of the song is nothing unique, where it's a girl who really, really wants a guy but knows he might not feel the same about her, but it's presented in a fresh perspective. Best lyrics: "And I don't see you anymore/And I can't see you on the floor/It's like a nightmare come to life..." and "You know I want you too much/You know it kills me the thought..."
4) "Spiders"-This edgy rock song describes falling out of love and really starting to hate that person. More specifically, it's about all the things they liked about that person that they now hate. Best lyrics: "Those hands I once longed to feel/I wanna squash them under my heel" and "I never thought I'd see the day/I never thought I'd hear myself say..."
6)"Dream Today"-It's hard to exactly describe the instrumentation of the song, but to me it sounds poppy with synth effects in the background. The message to the song feels almost hidden, but it's a commentary on today's world and what's most important to people (material goods and money). Best lyrics: "The sound of the bell rings/To the king they must bring/The latest report on where the dollar's sitting" and "Love is money in the bank/Watch the little darlings grow/Scared for them rightly so..."

Final Recommendations-This CD covers so many emotions, so many thoughts, and I highy recommend getting it.

4 out of 5 stars Better than a lot out there today.......2004-04-23

I think Joydrop is truly unique. They're pop *and* rock, techno *and* hardcore. They're not afraid to sound different on different tracks, and the lead singer's voice is amazing. They are a thousand times better than Evanescence or any other band out there today. It's refreshing to hear a band that writes about things other than expected. Buy this CD and "Viberate" and you will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting and at times breathtaking debut!.......2003-07-02

The first thing I'm always asked when describing a new band I'm into is 'what do they sound like?'. My reaction when asked to describe Joydrop is Garbage crossed with Mazzy Star, and maybe a hint of Brit bands like Lush and Echobelly. I've noticed some people who bought this CD, went on to buy Evanescene (probably the most overrated band this year) but there is very little here that would remind you of them.

So to the review, Although I am not a big fan of shouty female vocals the lead track 'Fizz' resonates with an assurity that many bands fail to catch through out their careers. Plus Tara Sloans vocal are shouty and almost a throwback to the likes of Kim Wilde et al in the 1980s. This track reminds me of Garbage. A good beginning. The next track 'Beautiful' can now only be described as one of the best songs i've ever heard in my entire life. Its THAT good, its a song of three parts; gentle verses, more meatier bridge and shouty Vocodarised 'BEAUTIFUL LIKE ME'. Works amazingly well and again the comparison to Garbage is valid here. The next track 'Breakdown' begins the more laidback vibe of some of Joydrops work. A nice, pleasant song although Mazzy Star do this kind of thing better. Strawberry Marigold is another stunner. The kind of tune that just builds and builds, with layers of electronic guitar effects. All based around a simple riff.

However after this song, many of the songs are simply average, with some nice effects. Towards the end Dog Star Radio provides the listener with another lovely tune and the closing track 'Until' is a great track to finish on with lovely slide playing.

Joydrops tunes fall into these three categories
1) shouty melodic-rock
2) slow building more laid back tunes with guitar effects
2) part chilled-part melodic rock tunes

If you like this sort of thing I reccomend this album. If you like a female vocal with attitude but versatility then its likely that this album will be in your stereo for a while.
