By the end of 1973, the Allman Brothers Band seemed to have it all nailed down. They'd proven their mettle with a fine synthesis of blues, jazz, folk, and country influences; expanded upon it with the definitive Fillmore East set; and moved forward after the separate losses of guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley. The group's myriad strengths, in fact, might've been the reason that one of their most obvious gifts--Gregg Allman's pained, growling voice--was sometimes overlooked. Laid Back, Gregg Allman's first solo disc, seems in part an effort to gain a little more recognition. It worked, particularly given the strong radio response to its opening track, a loping remake of "Midnight Rider." Likewise, much of the album's remainder finds Allman tweaking the band's blues ("Queen of Hearts") and country sides (a cover of Jackson Browne's "These Days"); horns and gospelish backing vocals add to the personal, often mournful feel. Much more coherent than its dated cover art (an either childlike or blasted-out-of-his-gourd Gregg ignoring a blazing volcano) indicates, Laid Back is an often convincing version of the man's music. For Allman, it would get much, much worse before it would be this good again. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars LAID BACK IS BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED, ROMANTIC, AND FULL OF TEARS (It also has the slow, swampy version of Midnight Rider).......2007-06-25

In 1973 Gregg Allman went into the studio to record his first solo album, with Chuck Leavell, Scott Boyer and Tommy Talton of Cowboy, Allman Brothers Band producer Johnny Sandlin, and produced a near perfect album of reflective, sorrowful, romantic, and acoustically beautiful songs, that has been the hallmark of his solo recording career. The production is glossy, yet never overdone. The acoustics are crisp and clear, the orchestration is lush, yet never intrusive, and the musicianship is precise and professional. Gregg's voice has never sounded better as he interprets these songs of love, hope, sadness, and regretful contemplation. The opening song, Midnight Rider is done with an acoustic guitar, a dobro, an electric piano, horns, and bongo drums. It's that excellant, slow, swampy version that you've heard on the radio. Queen Of Hearts is a love song that features some great vocals from Gregg, and a jazzy tempo change for the piano and saxophone solos. Please Call Home has gospel singers and electric guitar along with the standard piano the Allman Brothers song is known for. Allman steps up and rocks a little bit on the piano boogie Don't Mess Up A Good Thing. The Jackson Browne penned These Days is a highlight here and of Gregg's solo career. With an arrangement that features a beautiful pedal steel guitar and Allman's mournful vocals, the song will send you into thoughtful rumination and it sounds just great. Multicolored Lady is an acoustic guitar and orchestra ballad that tells the tale of the singer boarding a bus and sitting "next to a broken-hearted bride". It's sentimental , and the tender story of two lonely strangers holds your interest as it unfolds. All My Friends is an acoustic guitar based song with plenty of orchestration and a nice electric guitar solo. Very moody, very contemplative, and very good. The spiritual Will The Circle Be Unbroken closes the album with a full-tilt gospel arrangement, and Gregg's most sorrowful singing ever. With the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley still recent, the song takes on a new life, once again, and sounds as sad and melancholic as it ever has. Laid Back is a beautiful album, with many moods and textures, and it's Gregg Allman's most romantic and well produced solo album. And probably his best, too.

5 out of 5 stars ****4+1/2 Stars**** Gregg's Very Best Solo Effort.......2007-06-21

"These Days" was such a fitting anthem for Brother Gregg Allman back in '73 when Laid Back was released. I remember seeing the ABB on Thanksgiving night in 1971 at Carnegie Hall. It was their first concert following the dragic death of Duane Allman. I never would have thought The Allman Brothers Band would perform Will The Circle Be Unbroken. Gospel?...The Brothers?....Yea Right! But there it was at the end of that very memerable evening. I watched Gregg as he shared with the audience his pain and his grief, and something more.

That something more manifested itself two years later with his very rewarding debut solo effort. It took those two years for him to reflect on his first five years on the road. two and half years with his big brother and two and a half years without him. Gregg was truly inspired to lay down his finest vocal performance ever. Queen of Hearts delivers just that. What feeling, what depth. Just stunning!!!! The two ABB covers Please Call Home and Midnight Rider evoke the deep loss and agonizing despair of burying Brother Duane and reopening the wound a year later with the loss a of band member Berry Oakley.

Not without it's faults, Laid Back is my favorite solo album by Gregg. It took courage and it took fortitude for Gregg to stay the course. I'm sure he knew in his heart it was what Duane would have expected of him. Till this day, when I listen to Laid Back, I can't help but see his face before me on that long ago Thanksgiving night. Hurt beyond belief, but determined to go on and go on he did. Keep on keeping on Brother and thanks for all the great music and wonderful memories along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Gregg at his best!.......2007-01-13

This CD was recorded shortly after Duane's death, and and Gregg seems to be reflecting through his music. Great choice of songs and musicians, and very well performed by Mr. Allman. Very underrated work.

Greggs first Solo Album. Cut in Capricorn Studios with a 19 year old Chuck Leavell on Keys is a superb LP.
Re workings of "Midnight Rider" and "Please Call Home" are instant classics as is "Multi Coloured Lady" and Greggs gospel arrangement of "Will the Circle be Unbroken". If you love your music Heartfelt and Blues/Roots soaked then this is a must have...

After watching a program on CMT on the history of southern rock I ordered this CD. What a pleasure it has been - even the cover of Jackson Browne's THESE DAYS - Gregg's voice is so sweet. A must have for true fans.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Solo Effort.......2007-06-19

Brad Corrigan is most known for his work in the band Dispatch. Let me start by saying I'm not the biggest Dispatch fan, though I have enjoyed what I have heard from them.

I think this album has a good vibe, the guest guitarists such as Phil Keaggy add a little extra "something" and the stand up bass gives a good feel to tracks like "Fallin'." However I think the first half of the album is strong, while the second half is less enjoyable, especially the two instrumentals at the end which seem unnecessary. This album is still a good listen and I would recommend it to people that like music in the vain of Bob Marley, Dave Matthews, or Ben Harper. If you get a chance check out Braddigan live, that's where he shines.

3 out of 5 stars Not that good as at Dispatch Times.......2007-01-03

Well, I really apprechiate the work of Brad Corrigan, Braddigan, but this LP isn't that good like he wrote music with Dispatch a few years ago. There are some good songs like Falling (also known on the All Points Bulletin Live Album of Dispatch) and Pura Vida, but the other stuff isn't that good like his old songs "prince of spades" or "walk with you" or "past the falls" - nevertheless it's a good lp - good quality, nice acustic music, very spiritual, sometimes relgious,... but it's not a jam!

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2006-03-06

This cd is one of the best i've ever heard. The songs have great lyrics and amazing tunes. You will not be disapointed with this purchase.

This cd, while not alway immediately available, is well worth the wait. Breaux was a creative musician far beyond his peers. The best cuts are his own. An unfortunate accident took his life, however, if he were with us today, he would be far and away one of the most brilliant jazz guitar artists of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Harmonical!.......2000-05-21

Another of the Breaux's jewelry. Being one of the lucky one's to go throught the Groovin experience, this last cd is great! The harmonica in it adds a great turn, making your mind not forget its lines, the whole cd has a great balance between moved songs and others more relaxed. Breaux experiences with programmed drums and otehr sounds and arrives into a totally new experience, which, as I said, adds to a perfect balance since now we have the kind of tunes that we could experience in Groovin' and others so fresh and new. Also introduces voices of chorus and even Breaux sings! Pay attention to Small Town in Texas, In the Midst of it All and the supergreat Midnight Cowboy! A must!

2 out of 5 stars no white horse.......2006-06-21

i cant believe they would even try to come out with a hit package and not include their biggest international hit. best bet....... look for "laidest greatest" or the 2 albums put together on cd called "Keep Smiling + Hole in the Sky" ..... good luck on even finding them let alone how much the cost will be. I looked forever. I live in the usa. Finally I ordered both disc from Russia of all places, but the price was ok. The music is great!

4 out of 5 stars Good collection but not complete........2001-05-09

This compilation features the greatest hit of Laid Back, Sunshine Reggae and White Horse. The rest are quite good but only minor hits. Too bad this collection does not include one of Laid Back's best song "It's a shame" from the 1987 album "See you in the lobby" which is extremely hard to find on CD these days. This would have been a 5 star disc if it includes "It's a Shame". But for you who are not familiar with Laid Back this compilation should be enough to sample. Recommended.

Album Description

The long awaited release of darshan ambient's sequel to The Zen Master's Diary is here. Although not so much a concept album as the previous recording, Autumn's Apple is a dedication to family, children and love of tradition. There is a very different feel to Autumn's Apple that can be traced to Allison's love of soul records he collected as a child. That and a very distinct chill-out lounge flavor of the CD give this release a fascinating meld of soul-groove and ambient electronica. Also features the talents of Jeff Kowal (Terra Ambient) on guitar.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Allison pulls off a remarkable feat........2005-01-26

Autumn's Apple
Darshan Ambient
Lotuspike

First things first. I mean talk about big shoes to fill!?! I gushed over the organic, multi-instrumental, world-ambient artistry of the inaugral Lotuspike release, The Gate by Terra Ambient, so my expectations were very, very high going into Autumn's Apple by Darshan Ambient(Michael Allison).

Would this record create its own voice? A voice as memorable and penetratingly original, as its label's predecessor?

In a word, yes.

In fact, I walk away firmly believing--I suspected as such on Darshan Ambient's self-released gem The Zen Master's Diary--but now I can honestly say: No ambient artist out there today has better understood and internalized the most influential ambient record of all time (IMHO), Brian Eno's 1978 release Ambient I: Music for Airports then Michael Allison.

This kind of discreet precise approach to note selection and soundscaping cannot be taught. And Allison demonstrates this once again with his simply virtuosic playing and composing on this release; not a single note on it is wasted or excessive.

What is even more impressive is that this is by no means Eno-redux (i.e., boringly minimalist music that drones on and on like musac). To the contrary, Allison caresses the listener with luminescent notes that circulate in, around, and through very dynamic, percussion infused arrangements...

One of the many pitfalls of this kind of music, of course, is that the rhythmic elements can swamp the piano thus undermining what is truly ambient about the work (I have heard many releases when this is the case and the songs invariably become forgettable and thus forgotten in the heap)...

Instead, Allison pulls off a remarkable feat: Each and every track, and thus the work as a whole, accomplishes a wonderfully balanced rhythmic and atmospheric ambience. But more than a demonstration of impressive technical skill, the sounds that emanate from the core of Autumn's Apple feel effortless.

A few specifics about each of Autumn's Apple's 9 tracks:

Autumn's Apple begins with "Azure Day," a composition of slowly evolving tone-scapes and an accompanying high hat that morphs into a groovier beat loop that itself expands. The conga-like percussion lends a nice organic feel that carries the listener into the twinklingly seductive daylight--a sky of deep azure, indeed.

"Deep Garden" has a wonderfully Enoesque opening of slow piano progressions. Once again the high hat that blossoms into a thickly layered backbeat propulses us forward deep into the garden's lush landscape. The synth, however, stays patiently focused--it breathes, disappears, and then reappears seemlessly throughout the mix. Allison really demonstrates his brilliant composer's ear on this track.

"Pastorale" is simply a beautiful track. I won't even try to spoil it with words. It is just too mesmerizing and must be experienced to be appreciated.

"Acre of Sun" starts with a very funky back beat that grows and then snakes around the patient twinkling of Allison's keys. The wonderful contrast between observation and movement is clearly realized once again.

"Sea Stars for Tristen" is the album's most epic sounding piece: Allison's tribute to his newborn son. The observation-movement dynamic remains: A proud father cradles his lightly sleeping newborn son. A feeling of wonderous awe.

"Rain Parade" opens with a nice tight, in-the-pocket back beat. The metallic, breathy drones grow slowly forward. The melody on this track may be as strong as "Pastorale." I'm undecided. The rhythmics are also quite fascinating on tis track: the stutters fall forward like rain drops against glass.

Listening to "Pebble in My Shoe" creates a very interesting sensation: I find myself both relaxing and tapping my foot. This track also has very effective bridge section--it is somehow constantly rhythmic and spacious at the same time.

The title track opens with soft blurps of atmospheric synth that slowly evolve into something much bigger: Life's inescapable inertia. We are constantly changing "colors" and nature is as well: Autumn. As the backbeat builds and propulses along with a lovely melody we, the listener, are reminded of this pronounced time for growth and change--from seed to tree to flower to apple. Allison's ode to the changing colors of this inescapable passage on the seasonal cycle is at once heartfelt and toe tapping.

The last track "Man in the Window" in many ways is an accurate reflection of the album as a whole. Here, Allison takes a very daring step for an ambient artist: He lends his soft, throaty Peter Gabrielesque vocals to the mix. I admit that I went into listening to this track just waiting on the edge of my chair to shake my head at the trite, new agey cliche that I thought would follow.

Surprisingly, these preconceptions were mistaken.

Allison uses his vocals very purposefully to add an additional layer of emotive resonance to the mix. In essence, the vocals on this track may be thought of as providing one perspective--the man looking out through the window. Taken together, the vocals behind "the glass" and the wide open sonic landscapes that the piano creates in front of it combine to form the song's central narrative: The relationship of man to the physical world. We, the listener, are both behind and in front of the glass that opens to these picturesque, beautiful vistas.

"The Man in the Window" succeeds because it, like the other eight tracks on Autumn's Apple, are heartflet infusions of sonic poetry.

Autumn's Apple is heartfelt poetry-in- effortless-motion. A poetry that does not shy away from its inspirations; the birth of Allison's son, Tristen, being Autumn's Apple's most audible. Strongly recommended to those who truly appreciate virtuosic ambient artistry and songmanship. ****1/2 (out of *****)

The Jazz Nation - Retrofit

From his early fusion days with Jean Luc Ponty to the most recent world tour with Phil Collins, Daryl Stuermer has proven himself a guitarist, composer, producer and musician's musician. Retrofit, is his 5th solo project (4th on the Urban Island Music label) and not a retrospective per se, it is instead a gathering of the musical experiences garnered along the way. Forging 9 original compositions, he celebrates his maturity as an artist, yet reveals the youthful energy harnessed from going back to where it all began. His 2003 release Sweetbottom Live: The Reunion Recording, was the catalyst and Retrofit, is the result.

Joining Stuermer is a solid group of musicians: Kostia (acoustic/electric piano), Eric Hervey (bass) and John Calarco (drums/percussion) and they begin with two tracks that strike immediate contrasts. Revealing quite an eclectic range Stuermer's title track riffs electrified rock roots and the beguiling follow-up tune Rendezvous makes you understand, with its bluesy feel, that Stuermer is fluent in several guitar languages! An engaging quality transcends the ballad Promises as the octaves are played in Wes Montgomery style and not only does Stuermer promise, but he delivers as well! He takes the Wes-feeling further with melodic chord variations all the way to Zanzibar! Stuermer's signature sound gets decidedly edgier on the tracks Vagabond Street, Sharkskin Suit and Midnight Traveler as he tells these progressive stories.

The song I Will Remember You is performed beautifully on the nylon string guitar and the intriguing percussion lines make it an experience you won't soon forget! As you dive further into Stuermer's album Retrofit, it's not surprising to learn of his extensive work with the supergroup Genesis and the longstanding association with legendary recording artist Phil Collins. Their collaborations include I Don't Wanna Know, Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore, Only You and I Know, as well as the ASCAP-award winning song Something Happened on the Way to Heaven. The most recent arrangement of the song The Least You Can Do appears on Retrofit. Originally composed by Stuermer in 1993, lyrics were later penned by Collins and the vocal version was recorded on Collins' album Testify.

They say you can't go home again, but Daryl Stuermer not only takes us there, he brings us on a tour of his musical experiences and in the process creates something new. He arpeggiates the chords, rocks the rhythms and more than notes, he's captured the spirit. Musically speaking, Daryl Stuermer has put the pieces together and Retrofit is indeed greater than the sum of its parts!

5 out of 5 stars a tip of the coconut to Mr. Corbin.......2000-12-18

It takes spades of talent to create music as beautiful as this without the aid of layered mixing, over-hyped production and in Miles' case, even lyrics. Even if you're not a big surf fan, but are looking for a rage-dump disc, this is it! If you happen to love surf to begin with, you will be pleasently surprised. Although, I do want to mention that this is not a full-blooded surf album. It is mainly sparkling reverb with occasional acoustic amid a tapestry of soft bongo-like percussion. No one plays as clean or precisely as Miles. His songwriting capabilities are the real treat here though. Haunting, dramatic but always relaxing, it dosen't get more mellow or exotic than this.

5 out of 5 stars Miles Corbin's Finest to Date.......2000-02-02

I own all of the Aqua Velvet's discs. This is by far Miles' best work. Melodies are stronger and more upbeat but still have that signature Aqua Velvet vibe that invokes daydreaming and chillin' out. I play this everytime I have friends over and they all have loved it and bought it themselves.

5 out of 5 stars dreamy surf island music.......1999-12-14

I love this album! It takes me back to the islands, basking in the sun, sipping a mai tai, w/ some local cats playing under the palapa. I'm a big fan of the Aqua Velvets, and Miles playing is stunninly gorgeous on this cd as well.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 8 years later but still good!!!!!.......2004-10-13

I was listening to Doc's most current release Cool Like That and decided to go back and revisit several earlier releases I own. I forgot how good this really is and the calibur of the guest artist. Gerald Albright, Boney James, Stanley Clarke and Sheila E. are only several high profile pop instrument musicians who are featured on this project together with Doc's incredible grooves. I particularly like that there is a original material on this CD. Terms like funky, soulful, spirited and smooth appropriately describe all the music. If you can find it, get it!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Laid Back.......2002-12-06

Excellent CD full of tremendously talented artist. Out of all of Powell's CD's this is te best. I have recommended and played this CD for several close friends and jazz enthusiast all of whom enjoyed it very much. No brainer. Winner.

So much so....my CD grew legs and walked away from home. I had to replace it and now I keep it locked up with the good stuff.

    Enjoy!
