Editorial Reviews

While Gov't Mule is spearheaded by ex-Allman Brothers Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, this isn't so much a "jam band" as a power trio. Cream, Mountain, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience provide more accurate points of reference than the Grateful Dead. Not that Gov't Mule isn't interested in improvisational probing. For example, "Trane" explores John Coltrane by way of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This debut displays a high level of communication, cohesion, and musicianship, indicating this Mule can handle a considerable workload. --Richard Gowen

3 out of 5 stars Take Me Home Bob Marley.......2007-05-31

A bargain price, long songs, hey it's Mule. Being a big Mule fan, even post-Woody, I found this rather luke warm. Hammer Nails and Time Confess sound better in other recorded and live versions, and Confess takes on a reggae sound I like to a limit. Million Miles always seemed like it should have been longer rather than shorter, with some soul potential, but here is more or less exactly as it is on High And Mighty. I guess Love Make Do is my favorite and then we get more reggae--Unring Bell was ok on High And Mighty but somehow Haynes' wah-wahs seem unimpressive here. The reggae take on the great Soulshine, to me, is excessive and makes me feel as if Mule is going to release a Bob Marley tribute next time.

No doubt it was just a spur of the moment thing but there are far better live versions of Mule out there, pre- or post. Overall Warren's playing could probably need a little injection of something here too. So I guess I may be leaning towards concern over what direction Mule are heading. As Haynes is a tireless reinventor I'm sure everything is fine, but as a fan this had me puzzled and wanting to invest in dreadlocks.

5 out of 5 stars I love Mule! This is a must have!!.......2007-05-28

This is a must have for anyone who truly loves music. It may seem as there are only a couple of songs, but at 45 minutes it is very fulfulling and enjoyable! "Unring the Bell" is one of my favorites and I find myself playing it over and over again! This album rocks and is very soulfull!

Buy this album!!!

5 out of 5 stars bang for your buck.......2007-05-12

Mule settles in for some intimate jamming. Super groovy sound, slinky and in the pocket all at once. Bob Marley's 'Talkin Blues' release kind of has this vibe. Live, yes, but intimate, as well. * * * * * *

4 out of 5 stars Good .......2007-04-07

I thought this CD of Gov't Mule Live was good and enjoyed listening to it

4 out of 5 stars Another great Mule live cd.......2007-03-09

This is a really nice live cd from Gov't Mule. It has a more casual feel to the jamming and playing that gives it a feel of a jam session more than a concert. However this vibe just adds to the feeling of intimacy that comes across in the recording. Well worth the inexpensive price and with good song selecion; Thats What Love Will Make You Do" and the reggee version of "Soulshine" are definately top picks on this one. "Hammer and Nails" is also great. There is really nothing less than wonderful on this whole cd. Get it now.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Live Album From A Righteous Rock Guitarist.......2007-07-11

LIVE AT ROSELAND BALLROOM is a great live CD by Government Mule, with no overdubs and no touch-ups. Instead, what you hear is the unvarnished honesty of a true power trio playing their hearts out like there's no tomorrow. True, this can lead to some overindulgence and excessive jamming, but there are several great songs that more than make up for the occasional excess. In addition, guitarist-singer Warren Haynes' advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Classic Mule, hard hitting three man power........2007-06-15

Gov't Mule is an awesome band. Great lyrics and singing along with powerful guitar work by Warren Haynes. Fantastic drum work by Matt Abts. Heavy deep end by Allen Woody (too bad he had to leave us so soon).

If you haven't listened to the Mule, this is a terrific album to cut your teeth on.

5 out of 5 stars old school Mule.......2007-05-12

As it says in the liner, 'No overdubs, no editing, no apologies. Warren would like to take responsibility for being out of tune during Painted Silver Light. Matt would like to take responsibility for the confusion at the end of Dont Step On The Grass. Everything else is Woody's Fault !'
Master tapes were recently Calbitized and sound wonderful. This music absolutely demands to be played loud. Bonus Voodoo Chile makes for nice filler. Awesome reissue, crank it up !

5 out of 5 stars Reissue of the 2nd Mule album with "Voodoo Chile" bonus.......2007-05-11

Chronologically speaking, this was the second Gov't Mule album (a live document of their New Year's Eve 95/96 concert at NYC's Roseland Ballroom). True Haynes fans / Mule-heads will pay for the double dip in order to obtain the 15 minute "Voodoo Chile" with Jack Casady on bass and Chuck Leavell on organ (NOT the version found on the "Deepest End" DVD). The original album offered up a tasty 8-minute version of Steppenwolf's "Don't Step On The Grass Sam," one Allman Bros. track ("Kind Of Bird") and four tracks from the debut album. There's a reason why Haynes has found a home not only in Gov't Mule but also in The Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, The Allman Brothers...they're all jam bands and he's the consummate jam player. Everybody and his brother has covered "Voodoo Child, Slight Return" at one time or another, but Warren's the only player of consequence I know of who's tackled "Voodoo Chile" WITH original bassist Casady in tow. Later in Gov't Mule's career, an attempt was made to offer songs at the more traditional 3 to 4 minute length. Not here. The shortest track runs at approximately 6 minutes, with two topping 15. This is air guitar heaven. Jump in.

The first of a two-volume set, The Deep End stands as both Gov't Mule's fourth studio album and as a tribute to their late bass player, Allen Woody, who died accidentally in August 2000. To rise above the tragedy, remaining members Warren Haynes and Matt Abts ambitiously--and brilliantly-- recorded each track with a different bass player and guest vocalist or guitarist, many of them favorites of Woody's and all renowned throughout the music world. Cream's Jack Bruce, Bootsy Collins, the Who's John Entwistle, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deep Purple's Roger Glover, and Larry Graham of Graham Central Station are among those lending a hand--and there are hints of an equally impressive guest roster for Vol. 2.

Gov't Mule elected to continue as a four-piece with the addition of a full-time keyboardist, and the material on The Deep End serves as a great introduction to this new direction. While most tracks are reminiscent of their three previous studio outings, many also take advantage of the expanded instrumental arsenal to stretch out a bit, particularly on "Down and Out in New York City," with its jazzy stylings, and "Sco-Mule," with its classic Santana-esque delivery. Through it all, the distinctive and powerful vocals, guitar playing, and songwriting of the ridiculously talented Haynes ensures that the end result is a cohesive collection of material that will delight fans while bringing many new admirers on board. --Eric Wilson

5 out of 5 stars Best Mule CD!.......2007-06-20

If you like Gov't Mule you gotta own this CD. In my humble opinion this is the best studio record they have done to date.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-06

Never heard of the band before 2004 (I am Major Tom, who David Bowie was calling Ground Cotrol to, in SPACE). A co-worker of mine introduced me to them and I held on to the cd for a month. The many grooves of Bluesy rock, Funk, Rock is perfect. Down and Out In New York City is a GREAT track (RIP Godfather of Soul, James Brown). Along with the many bassist here, they all put it down perfectly. Come on, John Entwistle, LARRY GRAHAM, FLEA?! Warren and Matt are Great musicians.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues Lives On with Gov't Mule.......2006-06-16

I'm not going to be able to say anything more than all the other reviewer's have already said about this great Blues/Rock Masterpiece. Suffice it to say, it is absolutely a fabulously great collection of songs and musicianship all in one place.

It is also a quite diverse. Some really slow blues, intrumentals, blues rockers, even some tracks with horn sections! It is NOT repeatitive or boringly predictable (as someone thought). The addition of all the great guest musicians just adds to the diversity of the songs. Slightly different styles, different lead vocals, and lot's of "favorite" guitar players, bass players and keyboardist. It is simply a great cd that is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......2006-03-09

I bought the CD, because I'm dancing to Soul Shine with my father at my wedding this summer and I needed a good version of the song. I'm not a HUGE Gov't Mule fan, but the CD is pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant idea.......2006-03-09

You couldn't blame the band for choosing any one of 2 different paths after the untimely death of Allen Woody: they could have simply broken up or chosen to soldier on with a single replacement bassist (and I'm sure that would have been a fine effort). The 3rd - and most unlikely choice - is the path they decided to venture down.

Instead of a single replacement bassist they opened up the studio doors for some of the most respected talent in the business. The result is added to vibrance to what are already great songs.

I bought this before the added live disc (I just might have to make another purchase) but the studio only disc still gets 5+ stars.

It's invigorating to hear such a wide disparity between the music of Gov't Mule and the trusty blues/Southern rock of guitarist Warren Haynes's other full-time project, the Allman Brothers Band. Rooted firmly in the '70s riff-based power assault of bands such as Free, Mountain, and Humble Pie, with Haynes's gruff yet soulful vocals front and center, the Mule plow through 72 minutes of meat-and-potatoes, tougher-than-leather rock with the determination of their ornery moniker. The opening thump of "Mr. High & Mighty" will quickly separate the men from the boys as the band charges into one of their most potent and pointed tracks, helped enormously by Danny Louris's sinister organ fills. The disc continues with muscular material such as "Like Flies," "Streamline Woman," and the cowbell-driven "Brand-New Angel," that keep the thudding-guitar-and-drums attack at a high boil. Haynes borrows a page from Allmans co-lead guitarist Derek Trucks in the slide-powered worldbeat intro to "Brighter Days," but then it's back to business as the song transforms into a Jeff Beck Group-styled pile-driving scorcher. Things simmer down slightly for the sinuous reggae of "Unring the Bell," a few brawny ballads like "Child of the Earth," and the closing funk of the album's only instrumental, "3-String George," on which the Mule tap into an entirely credible Booker T. & the MG's vibe. The average tune is over five minutes, with the lovely yet cautionary "Endless Parade" clocking in at nearly twice that, but don't look for winding jams here. Rather, Gov't Mule have crafted their most dense and representative album yet, filled with steely licks and explosive melodies you'll be playing air guitar to after the first listen. --Hal Horowitz

4 out of 5 stars Great Music, Annoying Lyrics.......2007-06-08

Gov't Mule's latest project has a lot of exciting things going on. Warren Haynes' guitar work is really fun, lots of great music with powerful drums, wailing Hammond B3's and husky vocals. We hear lots of catchy guitar riffs and fantastic solo work, especially on tracks like "Brighter Days," "Like Flies" and "Mr. High and Mighty." The biggest problem that I have with the lyrics are that Warren Haynes' lyrics are far from amicable. Most of the songs are very accusatory, preachy and jaded, most notably tracks like "Unring the Bell," "Nothing Again" and "Endless Parade." They are the kind of lyrics that really just rub me the wrong way. "Unring the Bell" and "Endless Parade" both drag on past the 8 minute mark without needing to. We get the point after about 4 minutes, but the Mule has to be so stubborn to get the point across even more and then when they run out of things to say, they resort to unnecessary extended jams that do not develop at all. While the keyboard and guitar interplay at the end of "Endless Parade" is interesting, nothing really develops. They just keep going on one chord at a static intensity level and eventually fizzle out at the end of the track. While there are a few standout tracks on this album, it's really not worth it to grab the whole album. Snatch the good ones from from a track-by-track download service and forget the rest. If you want to take my advice grab these:

Mr High and Mighty
Brand New Angel
Streamline Woman
Like Flies
Brighter Days
(Three String George) maybe if you want to hear a good instrumental jam DOES develop

If only the other tracks could be good as this. I heard Mr High and Mighty on their website and let's just say that my expectations were pretty high from that track. Unfortunately this album didn't really meet them. This album is really a 3.5 star rating out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Mighty INDEED!.......2007-05-19

Since completing the "Deep End" trilogy in 2003, Gov't Mule's shown a move away from the liberally-sprinkled cover tunes that have graced past albums. It's the second album, following 2004's "Deja Voodoo," to feature the post-Alan Woody permanent lineup of Warren Haynes, Matt Abts and new members Danny Louis (keyboards) and Andy Hess (bass). Warren's single greatest strength, ironically, is also the trait that could work most against him (but never does)...he's a virtual encyclopedia of late-sixties and seventies album-oriented rock. Looking back at the Mule albums' cover tunes lays the influences bare: Free, Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Zappa, Deep Purple, ZZ Top...add the list of "fellow travelers" the band has associated with in revolving-door guest appearances and you have a wealth of talent and level of diversity not even attempted by most modern bands. And unlike some bands who have worn their influences on their sleeves, Gov't Mule is always about the music, never about posing and celebrity. "Mr. High & Mighty" is 72 minutes of tight, taut, muscular music. From the riff-driven title track (a mix of Humble Pie / Faces with a few Led Zeppelin time signatures thrown in for fun) to the groove-based, Band Of Gypsys-shaded "Brand New Angel" that rips apart at the seams at the 3-minute mark with a serpentine, fuzzed-out guitar solo, followed by a fuzz-wah spraying over the last two minutes of the track, to the slow, plaintive "Child Of The Earth (Grand Funk Railroad's Mark Farner would probably give his right arm to pull off a track this good), to the "Ron Wood sits in with Led Zep" epic "Brighter Days" to the nine-minute, Albert King-styled "Endless Parade" to the Little Feat-styled "3 String George," there's so much to like on "High And Mighty" that picking a favorite is flat-out impossible.

4 out of 5 stars Warren Haynes other band.......2007-07-04

This is an excellent introduction to Govt Mule, if you have not heard of them before, and are looking for some quality guitar rock music. Warren Haynes leads this band, as well as stepping in for Dickie Betts in the Allman Brothers. This is not music in the same southern rock genre as the Allman Brothers, it is blues based rock.

Warren is stellar on slide guitar, the guitar work is framed within excellent song craftsmanship as well. Some of the songs run long, but this is not a jam band.

Highlights:
About to Rage is a slowburner, Slackjaw Jezebel uptempo funk rocker, as is Lola leave your light on.

5 out of 5 stars This just gets better and better..........2007-01-27

Man, the more I listen to it, the more I like it! These guys can definitely rock, and their ballads are not just filler (check out "Wine and Blood" and it's sweet, cryin' guitar hooks and clever opening line..."Desiree's in disarray...") They tell stories.

This is blues-based rock with intelligent and original lyrics and unexpected and sophisticated chord changes ("Little Toy Brain.".)

Even...dare I say..a "Zepelin-esque" riff or two. Modern, yet with a big nod to late 60's/early 70's stuff; if a woman were to sing in this band, you could easily picture Janis Joplin or Dale Kranz (of Rossington Collins...damn, she rocked!) belting these out. Guitarist Warren Haynes, I believe, is the singer. And let me just say, he's no slouch in the vocal department. In fact, he's spot-on.

I've seen this tagged as "party rock" and "swamp rock." Huh? Nope. Just damn good music. You'll probably find yourself listening to this alot.

2 out of 5 stars Guess I'm just not a fan.......2006-08-15

I heard great things about them but I guess I wasn't really familiar with their work - either that or this particular album just isn't for me. Then again I'm not a blues fan so maybe that's the problem. The first tune is catchy but the rest is not funked up enough for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars Great Southern Jams.......2006-03-08

This is a 5 star effort all the way! What a great and fun band these Gov't Mule guys have turned out to be. Along with the always awesome rhythm section and perfect guitar we also get some great keyboards courtesy of Danny Louis.

These guys consistently create fantastic music.

4 out of 5 stars hot hot hot.......2005-10-19

Warren Haynes and Matt Abts return with new players Danny Lewis and Andy Hess on keyboard and bass respectively for a rebirth of one of the most intense bands working. While I prefered the stylistic breadth of the Deep End projects, this is in my opinion the best Mule CD as a self contained unit. While the instinctive communication between Haynes and the late Alan Woody is missing, overall the band burns with a purpose.

Standouts include Bad Man Walking, Slackjaw Jezebel, Wine and Blood, Lola Leave Your Light On, Little Toy Brain, and New World Blues

Gov't Mule's arsenal of endless jams that somehow perpetually build in intensity make it natural that this Southern power trio has so quickly returned to the live-record format. The Mule's second concert recording in four years is as virile as the title is impotent. Recorded in Atlanta on New Year's Eve, 1998, this four-disc collector's edition will please fans who weren't satiated by the original 145-minute two-CD set. With a Little Help serves as a road map through their array of influences, as the band wends its way through Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Free, Elmore James, Traffic, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse before settling in for the night at the John Coltrane Inn for a half-hour of "Afro Blue." Despite all this prime cover material, the highlight may still be Warren Haynes's original "Soulshine" (first recorded while Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were with the Allman Brothers), a gritty and spiritual Muscle Shoals soul number that finds Haynes bouncing guitar licks off young Derek Trucks while the unlikely keyboard tandem of Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell dig in behind them. The steady stream of guests--including former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, former ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring, and reed man Randall Bramblett--keeps things moving along, but in truth, Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts hardly need any help generating incendiary, densely packed music. This powder keg is a mission statement and a mission accomplished all in one wrapper. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Killer.......2007-06-13

I think of Gov't Mule as the world's best covers band, but meant as a compliment if that's possible. Although Warren Haynes has blossomed somewhat as a songwriter since these tracks were recorded, Mule's best moments are mostly outside the studio, playing borrowed material. Perhaps 'world's best jam band' might be more accurate. Haynes has an insatiable - and infectious - appetite for playing live and he draws some extremely talented peers into his circle. (Having said that, the trio doesn't need much of a hand here, and Haynes dominates the set more than he does on 'Deepest End Live', with its stunning line-up of guests). The highlights are Mule's eponymous signature song (with a quote from Van Morrison's 'I've Been Working') and a superb version of Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer'. While not straying far from the original, it suffers absolutely nothing by comparison. It is a perfect vehicle for Haynes' soulful voice and also features one of his best-ever solos. Hayne's Anglophile tendencies lead to this set's weaker moments - the Free and Black Sabbath covers. 'Afro-Blue' meanders but, otherwise, there's no let-up in the energy of a super-charged show.

This is a must have collection for anyone! It may seem costly, but it is worth every penny and then some. If you have never heard of Gov't Mule you need to climb out from under your rock and buy this CD immediately! Do not hesitate or think about it, just do it! We have all of the Gov't Mule albums and a lot of concert downloads from their website and every MB (a week plus worth of music) being taken up on our computer by Mule is done so gladly.

This is an awesome album! I agree with one of the reviewer, this is one that I would take will being stranded anywhere! For me this ranks right up there with Physical Grafitti!

The riffs and slides Warren pulls off are mind blowing and the rest of the band are awesome players. This is one band that does not get the playing time on the radio that they deserve! GET THIS ALBUM, NOW!

2 out of 5 stars BE WARY OF RAVE REVIEWS.......2007-04-24

I BOUGHT THIS BOX SET BASED ON REVIEWS READ ON THIS SITE THAT IT WAS WORTH THE MONEY. WELL, IT'S NOT! THE FIRST DISC IS REALLY GOOD AND I KEPT PLAYING IT TILL I REALIZED THERE WERE MORE. HOWEVER, WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS OF REPEATING THE FIRST CD, DISCS 2,3, AND 4 FALL SHORT OF BEING WORTHY OF CONTINUED PLAYING. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY SOMETHING CHEAPER. THE PRICE FOR THIS BOX SET IS TOOOO MUCH!I WOULD GLADLY SELL IT TO SOMEONE WHO'S INTERESTED FOR HALF THE PRICE IF THEY WANT IT.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the 4-hour, 4-CD "Collectors Edition".......2007-02-04

This originally came out as a 2-CD set, followed by the 4-CD "Collectors Edition." Spend the extra bucks and get the 4-CD set...it's well worth it. On recent albums Gov't Mule has moved away from cover versions in favor of more original tunes, but the band always chose their covers wisely. A perfect example is Neil Young's masterpiece from the "Zuma" album, "Cortez The Killer." It's moody and nasty and seductive and loud...the Mule does not mess with the legacy of the Horse. The same is true for Free's "Mr. Big" (also covered on the Mule's debut album), Sabbath's "War Pigs," Little Feat's "Spanish Moon," and Frank Zappa's "Pygmy Twylyte." If you have the slightest interest in this kind of music, especially when it comes to Warren Haynes and his many projects (Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Phil Lesh & Friends, The Dead, etc) this is as close to a guarantee of a "busting at the seams" collection of excellent tracks, played with power and passion, as you're gonna get.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-01-20

This CD was a gift. It is very inspiring and is a good acoustic version of Government's Mule stuff. If you are a fan, you'll like this one.

This second and final installment of the band's ambitious tribute to their late bass player, Allen Woody, concludes what they began with 2001's Vol. 1--namely, to record each track with a different bass player while retaining a cohesive feel to each album. The two are indeed bookends; this second release is by no means comprised of leftover tracks. Rather, so many of Woody's favorite players wanted to be involved that it led to the recording of enough material to fill two full-length CDs. As on Vol. 1, the guest list includes notable players from different genres, such as Les Claypool (Primus), Billy Cox (Jimi Hendrix), Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), Meshell N'degeocello, Jason Newsted (ex-Metallica), and Chris Squire (Yes), among others. The intent was to have each guest incorporate their own style into their selected track, while retaining the identifiable sound of the band, and again they have succeeded, especially on the Squire track, "Sun Dance." A notable exception is "Greasy Granny's Gopher Gravy, Pt. 1" which is pretty much transformed into a Primus song by Claypool's distinctive bass and vocal. It's still a worthwhile song, but more enjoyable if you're a fan of his band. Three covers out of 13 tracks--Tower of Power's "What Is Hip?," the more obscure "Hammer and Nails," and the traditional "Catfish Blues"--fit in smoothly alongside new originals such as "World of Confusion" and "Slow, Happy Boys." --Kim Hughes

I enjoyed listening to this CD another Gov't Mule classic Excellent to my personal taste Recommended

1 out of 5 stars Packaging all screwed up.......2006-08-05

First, I would have probably rated this CD higher if I could have listened to it. But I've had problems getting the correct order from Amazon.

The first time I ordered this was about 3 months ago. I received a CD package that was part vol 1 and part vol 2. In other words, the sleeve would say one thing, the wrapping something else. But all that mattered was that it contained the vol 1 CD. I notified Amazon who very promptly sent me a replacement. It had the same problem, and Amazon credited my card and gave me $10 for my troubles, recommending that I buy it elsewhere.

About two months later I still hadn't found the CD in local stores, so I decided to give Amazon a try again since it was still on their website. This time all the packaging looked right, and it contained the vol 2 CD, but it contained only one CD. Vol 2 is supposed to be a two CD set. And the packaging indicated that this was only a single CD, so there must be two versions of vol 2. Again, I notified Amazon who very promptly sent me a replacement. And, again, it was wrong - it was a single CD. Amazon said they would credit my account.

Amazon handled the matter all four times very promptly and professionally. Unfortunately they seem to have no control over the manufacturer or packager.

Looks like I will try to buy this two-CD vol 2 locally.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary addition to the series started in vol 1.......2006-03-09

As far as I'm concerned Vol 2 only manages to add even better performances to the series of recordings with guest bassists that started on vol 1. There's a crazy, almost over the top slide performance in Catfish Blues that just pushes the entire set into the stratosphere and firmly establishes Warren Haynes as one of the most vital electric guitarists in the last 20 years. This set rocks so hard it's incredible. If you can only get one of the Deep Ends then purchase vol 2 but you really need both. It'll be good for your soul.

5 out of 5 stars The deep End, Vol. 2.......2005-10-12

Great new album and artists! This album and "The Deep End, Vol 1" are a treat for those who appreciate great guitar work! Gov't mule puts together some all time famous artists to create a stunningly musical treat! "Lay of the Sunflower", and "Soulshine" are melodic and tuneful, whereas "Catfish Blues" is an excellent gathering of New Orleans sounds you will recognize! Also, if you loved Lowell George formerly of "Little Feat", you will love "Greasy Granny's Gopher Gravy," which sounds a lot like old "Little Feat" albums. This is truly a guitar player lover's album!

2 out of 5 stars not up to snuff.......2003-08-31

The guys have lost their fire. They were a great great power trio that could jam endlessly. But after allen woody's death, the guys have almost become a vegas act. I bought this album but hardly listen to it. In my opinion, deep end I was much closer to mules initial vision. If you want to see what they reall are about, get the Roseland Album. At their best, they absolutelt rocked! But here, they fizzle....gopher Gravy? really!!!

After years of playing with the Allman Brothers Band, guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody left the ensemble to focus on Gov't Mule. On their third album, Gov't Mule broaden their direction and expand the sonic possibilities of a power trio. Echoing threesomes like the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream, Gov't Mule play modern blues-rock with exuberance and style. Haynes's proficiency on the guitar allows for exploration in a variety of musical idioms. He plays with fiery precision and his soulful voice is gruff and expressive. Besides original material, the band covers the country-blues classic "John the Revelator," written by Son House, and rework The Beatles' "She Said She Said." --Mitch Myers

What do you get when you combine a living legend of a guitar player, with a supremely talented bass player respected among the world's best bass players, and a flat-out awesome drummer? Possibly the best power trio of all time, and one hell of an *$$ kickin' "Mule"! Think this praise is unfounded and just my personal opinion? Think again!

Warren Haynes, a living legend, has rightly been proclaimed one of the best guitar players of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine. Warren is the premier Blues/Rock guitarist and has played guitar on dozens of albums, not only as a solo artist and for Gov't Mule, but also for other legendary bands and artists.

Matt Abts is a Grammy Nominated drummer and has received multiple first place drumming awards from respected drumming publications. His drumming on this album can only be described as spectacular.

Allen Woody - Unfortunately Gov't Mule's next studio album was the last album bassist Allen Woody performed on. In August of 2000 Allen Woody unexpectedly passed away. As a fitting tribute and show of respect about two dozen of the world's best bass players assumed Allen's duties on Gov't Mule's following two albums. These bass players included Les Claypool, Jason Newstead, Flea, Roger Glover, John Entwistle, Bootsy Collins, Phil Lesh and Dave Schools. Gov't Mule's first two albums are their hardest/heaviest, and in my opinion their best. They have yet to put out an album as outstanding as when Woody was with the band. Woody was an irreplaceable piece of the Mule, and is certainly missed by all. RIP Woody.

Now, Gov't Mule has been one of my favorite bands for years, but I was surprised to learn that Metallica frontman James Hetfield recently stated that Gov't Mule IS his favorite band. I would have guessed that James would have named a classic band from the 70's, or possibly one of his contemporaries as his favorite band. But it's obvious James has an understanding of what exceptional Rock is, and appreciates listening to music from seasoned and truly talented musicians, not some cr*p from a "flavor of the month" band. If you are a fan of Rock/Metal and listen to Gov't Mules first two albums and fail to understand how good they are, either you are pretty young and should probably not stray to far from listening to your Linkin Park and Godsmack, or you simply have no true grasp of what excellent Rock music performed by talented musicians is. This fact is not arguable.

5 out of 5 stars GOV'T MULE'S BEST...........2006-09-01

WITH THIS THEIR SECOND STUDIO RELEASE, GOV'T MULE TAKES IT'S HEAVY BLUES ROCK TO A NEW LEVEL. WHILE MULE'S FIRST RELEASE HAD A LIVE FEEL TO IT, THIS ONE IS MORE OF A STUDIO ALBUM THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE CHANCES WITH. GREAT SONGS AND GREAT PLAYERS. WARREN HAYNES, ALLEN WOODY AND MATT ABTS ARE IN TOP FORM ON THIS ALBUM. IF YOU WANT GREAT BLUES ROCK WITH TOP NOTCH PLAYING, THIS IS THE CD TO GET.

4 out of 5 stars Good Three Piece Jam Band!.......2006-02-16

I enjoyed this jam band Gov't Mule, with their third album under way they split the airway for pre-existing three piece bands such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Cream. This is a blues rock jam band that really symbolizes good music, which is really live music in the studio. All of the songs carry on to some extent from the beggining notes to Blind Man in the Dark, to I Shall Return this is considered to be one of the least favorite Gov't Mule albums. This is the first Gov't Mule album I bought so I was not sure what to expect but from what I heard I believe this deserves 4 stars none more none the less. If you really want to dig deep into the band Gov't Mule check out their entire catalog and then you can be the judge on the band since im not the most experienced on this band!

1 out of 5 stars A Yawn and a Shaking of the Head.......2005-07-26

This is one of the most bland and boring blues/rock CDs I have ever heard. There's nothing here that hasn't been done better by a hundred other bands. Power trio? You've got to be kidding! There are way too many holes in the music. I was playing music by Cream, Hendrix, and Mountain back in 1970. I know what a power trio is. I just don't understand the fascination with this CD or this band. Pass this one by.

5 out of 5 stars troyez.......2005-06-01

Ever since I first heard "Blind Man in the Dark," on the radio in 1998 I knew this Mule thing would be great. I knew Warren and Woody from the Allman Brothers and knew they were great, but when they stepped out with Gov't Mule it was like a breath of fresh air for me. This album was the first Mule album I bought (and wore out) and it rocked my musical foundations. It is a must buy in my opinoin. I have seen Mule three times now, met them once (before Woody died), and would kill to see them again - my point is that this album changed the musical landscape for me. Go and see the Mule live (if you haven't yet) and support the boys in person.

4 out of 5 stars Government Mule.......2007-07-20

My friend Vinnie in Germany recommended this band, and I like the CD I ordered. Their sound is definitely hard core rock, great guitar work!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Gov't Mule .......2007-02-14

Gov't Mule's self-titled debut Jams from beginning to end, and is an essential addition to any CD collection. The Allman Brothers meets Led Zepplin. Truly a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Mule rules!.......2006-11-10

One of the best blues/rock CD I've ever heard and possibly my favorite Gov't Mule album. In my opinion Warren Haynes is the best blues/rock guitar player at the moment, with lots of jazz influences (listen to 'Trane'). Killer riffs, great melodies, fantastic improvisation. Everybody who like Cream, Hendrix, Clapton and the 60's/70's classic rock bands must listen to this album.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-04-14

This is the best music that I've heard from Govt Mule. The only thing that I can compare this with is seeing them live. It took me a week to get this cd back from my wife. I had to make her a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album.......2006-02-27

I got this CD two days ago, after knowing about the band for probably less than two weeks. I listened to some song samples and decided they were my new favorite band.
This is one of the few CD's I can listen to, back to front, without getting bored of any song. Warren's guitar playing is incredible, and It's no wonder he had to overdub vocals on nearly all of the songs. Allen Woody (Rest in Peace) was also a great bass player, and you can actually hear the bass on this CD, as opposed to most other bands where you just sort of feel the notes. Matt Abts, a great drummer, completes this Southern/Blues Rock Power Trio. And I won't leave out mentioning Warren's awesome blues singing. Overall, a great album, good sound quality, and I especially appreciate the fact that Warren uses Gibson electric guitars on most of the tracks (except the two that are a vocal solo and an acoustic song), my axe of choice. I just wish I could play like him. If you are a Southern Rock, Blues, or Classic Rock fan, I highly reccomend this album to you. You WILL NOT be dissapointed.

Hope this review helped.

Remember hard rock? No, not alternative, not metal, not punk, not acid rock. Just good, old-fashioned, beefy, brawny, bluesy, hard rock. This power trio keeps a dying form alive, but not in a revivalist sort of way. Their ferocious but very soulful blend of blues rock and Southern boogie is a natural outgrowth of their musical influences, and with a tour docket that includes more than 200 shows a year, they've honed their sound to a fine edge. Life Before Insanity is their fifth record, but only their third studio effort, and it's their sharpest work--even though they've always been the most focused of all the jam-oriented ensembles. They've managed to craft a diverse and hardy 74-minute album, using a variety of moods, structures, textures, and time signatures, without ever really straying from their robust core sound. One minute Warren Haynes is trading searing licks with Ben Harper, the next he's deep inside a beautiful acoustic ballad, then he's blistering through a Robert Johnson cover with steely slide guitar. As with any hard-rock band worth their weight, there's a bit of arena-rock drama, but it's inevitable when you match brains and muscle. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Righteous Blues-Rockers Tear It Up Here.......2003-11-12

LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, Government Mule's last album with the late, great Allen Woody on bass, is a great slab of ZZ Top/Montrose-style hard blues-rock. All of the songs are great, especially "Bad Little Doggie." Leader Warren Haynes is a blistering guitarist and singer, and his belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes this album an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars The Deeper You Go Let That Hard Ass Mule Carry On.......2003-03-24

This disc is part of the reason why I don't burn or share studio discs. This is an inspired work of art. It is the last Govt Mule studio work that includes founding bassist, Allan Woody. The song writing is inspired, the lyrics are pure poetry, often dark and brooding explorations of ego. and examinations of the self society. Warren Haynes' voice is powerful easily interpreting his private examinations of self and society. His tales often betray his emotions and feelings laying bare places most of us keep hidden. He is a modern slide, blues, rock guitar virtuoso. This is a studio work but you still hear great demonstrations of his improvisational skills. Skills currently being used by the Allman Brothers Band as well as Phil and Friends, two of the top improvisational bands of this and the last century. Matt Abts is a frenetic, embattled engine producing much of Govt Mule's horsepower. He hammers away on the drums, relentlessly battering the skins creating a consistent Thunder Thor would be proud of. Allan Woody powers the team shouldering the Mule's yoke. His contribution to the band is difficult to convey. A founding member and friend who's loss triggered a Govt Mule Odyssey that ultimately brought the fan the "Deepest End" series that culminates in a DVD/film that chronicles Rocks most unique and creative "Power Trio".

"Life Before Insanity" is ABTS-SO-MULE-LY FAB-MULE-OUS! A disc that makes me listen. It gets better with every spin!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2002-10-04

Why in the world do these record people keep taking this CD off the market. This is a solid jam CD that has some great gutiar work from Warren Haynes. He was in the Allman Brother for awhile and he can flat out play the slide guitar. Great song, Life Before Insanity. Buy this CD if you can find it. You won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Mule Power!.......2002-04-10

After the over-heavy, muddy Dose, I was pleased to find this effort more melodic and more musically leaning toward the adventurous first Mule album (one that knocked my socks off with the first play). There's more of the off the wall sounds, reverbs and tremloes and tones that made the first Mule so different from everything else. One listen to "Life Before Insanity" tells you everything you need to know about this album. If you don't like that track, you don't need this album.

From the simple riff that opens "Wandering Child" to the end of "It's My Life" (NOT the uncredited add on "If I Had Possesion Over Judgement Day," the old Rev Gary Davis track, if I am not mistaken... that is an unnecessarly and mediocre track) I can constantly roll this album and not get bored with it. There's always a new turn to be found in repeated listenings. The only other track I might program off is "Fallen Down", but it's not worth the time to even do that. Overall a very solid effort.

1 out of 5 stars P.U.!.......2002-03-17

This is one malodorous effort which I would advise serious music lovers to avoid like the Dengue fever. After all the good things I heard about this band I finally decided to buy this CD based on the reviews here at Amazon. Good Lord was I dismayed and disgusted when this abomination made it's debut on my CD player. I know these guys have a great pedigree, but what in the name of all things decent were they thinking when they unleashed this stench on an unsuspecting public? There is not a single tune on this CD worth playing a second time. I have probably listened to this CD from start to finish about 10-12 times, and it completely eludes me as to what people see in it. The lyrics are pathetic and the playing is unimaginative to the point of being embarrassing. I have played this disc in the morning and in the evening. I have played it cruising down the freeway and lounging on my deck. I have played it in every imaginable spiritual, psychological, and mental state. And it continues to disappoint! Well done, lads. Hope my [number] bucks makes it all worthwhile. For my money, I'll stick with The Mississippi Allstars.
