Collins closed out the '80s with the chart-topping ...But Seriously, which spawned four mega-hit singles and also mirrored its title in a turn toward more pensive, socially conscious fare, such as "Another Day in Paradise" and "That's Just the Way It Is." The set also contains Collins's finest batch of lost-love songs ("Do You Remember," "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven," "I Wish It Would Rain Down") since his first two albums, meaning, likely as not, that art was served at the expense of yet another relationship. Collins is aided on the album by some of his famous friends, including Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Stephen Bishop, and David Crosby. --Daniel Durchholz

one last '80s masterpiece from the phenomenal Phil.......2006-06-22
Released in November of 1989, "...But Seriously" is a somewhat transitional effort for Phil. With the possible exception of the album-opening "Hang In Long Enough", Phil completely abandons the synthesized dance-rock sound of "No Jacket Required"--drum machines are still very much present, but they're used much more moderately, with Phil's real live drumming in full force on all of the non-ballad numbers this time around. And, as the title suggests, Phil gets more capital 'S' "serious" with the lyrics, tackling such issues as apartheid, ghetto violence, and homelessness, in addition to his usual introspective and romance-themed material. Phil had begun to really put his money where his mouth was in the late '80s/ early '90s regarding the homelessness issue, a theme which can actually be traced all the way back to "Man On The Corner" from Genesis' 1981 "Abacab" album, but Phil makes it much more explicit here, particularly on the huge hit "Another Day In Paradise".
Phil's move away from 'just-plain-fun' a la "Sussudio" and toward more political writing seems to have been partly an attempt to silence his detractors; this backfired somewhat, as his attempts at social commentary were accused of being overly simplistic, and I'll admit there is some merit in this accusation. There's a visible formula that Phil established here and would continue to use on his next couple albums--use a series of scene-setting verses, then alternate it with a chorus that features a 'one-line summation' of it all, such as "it's just another day for you and me in paradise" or "that's just the way it is". Phil himself admitted in a promo interview around the time of "...But Seriously"'s release that he's "not a very well read person" and that he lives his life "by common sense". All that said, Phil's attempts at social commentary here are undeniably earnest, well-intentioned, and generally quite thoughtful. Two of them feature striking harmony vocals from David Crosby--the moody "Another Day In Paradise", with its creepy intro, arpegiatted guitars and pensive guitar harmonics (from Dominic Miller), and swooping bass line (from Leland Sklar), is heart-wrenchingly beautiful; and the Northern Ireland-themed "That's Just The Way It Is" is also really moving and typically atmospheric. The 8 & 1/2+ minute "Colours", about South Africa, is a musical tour-de-force, starting off with a gorgeous ballad section, then featuring a percussion-drenched segue which eventually gives way to a rousing, uptempo, horn-laden pop-rocker, and the quasi-coda really brings closure to this epic track. "Heat On The Street", which Phil originally wrote for The Four Tops, swings along with an irresistible catchiness, punctuated by great wordless background vocals.
"Hang In Long Enough" is kind of an ironic album-opener. People had already accused "Sussudio", the opening song on "No Jacket Required", for sounding like a rip-off of Prince's "1999", but "Hang In Long Enough" takes this a step further, with the main riff being an almost direct clone, but it's an incredibly fun, rousing song in its own right, with Phil going all-out vocally.
As for the rest of the big hits... "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven", co-written by Daryl Stuermer and originally written for the movie "The War Of The Roses", is uncharacterically weak, with the lyrics being a virtual cliche-a-thon. But there are a couple of terrific lost-love ballads including "Do You Remember", with a soaring middle-eight and Phil's close friend Stephen Bishop singing all of the song's background vocals; and the majestic, gospel-ish "I Wish It Would Rain Down" which features Eric Clapton on lead guitar.
"All Of My Life" is a tender ballad that feels a little generic for Phil, plus it blatantly derives from the Tootsie theme "It Might Be You" which, not so coincidentally, was performed by Stephen Bishop, but it's still affecting, and enhanced by some tasteful Hammond organ playing from Steve Winwood.
The album's penultimate track is the heart-wrenching ballad "Father To Son", written for Phil's then pre-teen son Simon. And the closer "Find A Way To My Heart" is a joyful uptempo feel-good tune with great spirited vocals from Phil.
So, despite the minor gripes, "...But Seriously" is still a masterpiece by any realistic measure. The weakest tracks are hardly bad, and even if you ignore them, you're left with so much prime Phil Collins material, no one in the right mind could possibly go wrong.
(P.S. There are a load of non-album b-sides from this era, including an intriguing 3/4 time demo of "Another Day In Paradise" entitled "Homeless"; the super fun, riffy pop-rocker "That's How I Feel"; and another quality pop-rocker with "You've Been In Love (That Little Bit Too Long)".)

"BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." THIS IS A GOOD WELL MADE JOE WALSH ALBUM........2007-02-04
JOE WALSH is no stranger to Rock n' Roll. Prior to joining THE EAGLES in the mid 1970's, Walsh played in a very popular band in the early 70's called THE JAMES GANG. If you have never heard the rock classics such as "Walk Away" or "Funk #49," you are definitely missing out. These songs are the real rock stuff that are made of legend. When Joe Walsh joined the famed legendary band THE EAGLES, he would contribute in changing THE EAGLES sound into a more Rock n' Roll sound. "Hotel California" and "Life In The Fast Lane" are true testaments of WALSH'S Rock n' Roll sound. Now WALSH would take a break from THE EAGLES and head into the recording studio and record a solo album that would pretty much sum up his career. JOE WALSH would evolve from the recording studio and hand Elektra Records his masterpiece album entitled "BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS..." In my opinion, this is a very well made album which contains one of the greatest Rock anthems of the 1970's ever recorded. When you listen to this album, it sounds just like a typical EAGLES album. Coincidently, EAGLES members Don Henley, Glen Frey, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit do lend a helping hand in the recording of this album. Believe it or not, the credits in this album do mention the late great John Entwhistle of THE WHO.
I will list and briefly review certain song tracks that are of great importance and relevance to this album. I will list these song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Over And Over," (This is well made song. The music does sound a little humorious. I love the way Walsh plays certain guitar chords in this rocker. Walsh does know how to rock when he lets loose. I like Walsh's sliding guitar solo in this one.) (3.) "Indian Summer," (This is a beautiful Rockin' song. This song sounds so much like THE EAGLES. The music sounds so heavenly and refreshing. The harmonies sound incredible.) (4.) "At The Station," (This is another well made Walsh Rocker. This song has similar chords to the classic Walsh song "In The City." This song also sounds alot like a typical JAMES GANG song. This song truly Rocks.) (7.) "Theme From Boat Weirdos" (I love this song. This is another beautifully well made instrumental song. Walsh does let loose a little with his guitar playing. This is another song that truly Rocks.) and (8.) "Life's Been Good." (Ah yes, this is my most favorite song on the whole album. In my opinion, this song is the main centerpiece of the whole album. This song should be voted as one of the greatest rock anthems of the 1970's. This song sounds like an all out EAGLES rocker. The lyrics are so humorous that we can almost relate to it, at least I can. This is a true rocker that defines what great Rock n' Roll is all about.) Overall, this is one hell of a album worth seeking out.
I would like to highly advise everyone to purchase this album for their own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, JOE WALSH has managed to entertain us with his music and humor for many years. JOE WALSH has performed successfully on and off with THE JAMES GANG and THE EAGLES. Believe it or not, JOE WALSH did run as an independent for President Of The United States. As I am writing this review, THE EAGLES are in the process of releasing their first studio album in 25 years. This is great news for Rock n' Roll. I really do hope that THE EAGLES will stay together this time and grace us with more great albums in the near future. Rock n' Roll needs a great legendary band like THE EAGLES to keep Rock n' Roll breathing. So heres to you Joe, Don, Glen, Don F. and Timothy. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? GO EAGLES. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

Totally disappointing comedy box leaves 'em asking..........2007-02-23
The cover has a raised image in plastic of a pair of Groucho gag eyeglasses (with nose and mustache). But look inside the package-- there's not a Marx Brother to be found anywhere! An excerpt of one of Groucho's many 1940s radio appearances would have been most welcome here. Speaking of radio--
There's -nothing- from Burns & Allen, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Fred Allen or Fanny Brice-- vaudeville and radio stars all. So what do we get from that great comic medium? A lesser Stan Freberg single, a weak Henry Morgan track and two tepid Bob & Ray routines-- and that's IT. Oh-- and where are Jonathan Winters, Prof. Irwin Corey, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, Pat Cooper, Rusty Warren, Don Adams and so many others? There's no Firesign Theater or P.D.Q. Bach on this album, either. So, why not???
A further problem are the tracks that ARE here. Smith & Dale were certainly "Pioneers," yet their recording isn't vintage-- it's the last one these old vaudevillians made, from the early 1960s. It seems that in the majority of other cases, better material was available. For instance, why an excerpt of 2000 AND TWO YEAR OLD MAN and not the original classic Brooks & Reiner routine? Why a Tom Lehrer song from 1965, instead of his great earlier stuff, or "Al 'N Yetta" rather than "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah"? ALL bad bad choices!
The guaranteed-to-disintegrate tabloid-style newspaper liner notes are a poor decision, too-- mine has already yellowed and frayed. Finally, why do the four CDs average only an hour each? For these reasons and more, THE AMERICAN COMEDY BOX could have been so much better! NOT recommended.

Memorable...but disappointing..........2002-04-25
Ray, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, the Credibility Gap and Steven Wright), as well as good to middling material from lesser lights. The liner notes (in the form of a mock newspaper--again with the chintz) are OK.
A Scholarly Sampling Of Comedy.......2000-09-04
On the more positive side, I learned a lot, both from the recordings and also from the extensive newspaper-style liner notes that accompany it. It also contains several comedy bits I remember having heard as a child in the 60's, such as those by the Smothers Brothers, Flip Wilson, and the classic "Who's On First" by Abbott & Costello. Okay, all things considered I guess I'm not sorry I bought it. It brought back memories, and allowed me to share some of them with my neice and nephew.

Album Description
If you listen closely to Vinegar's music you might catch a hint of Barnum & Bailey or perhaps Cirque du Soleil. Like these established acts, Vinegar is dazzling, colorful, and well orchestrated. You can hear it in Francis' childlike voice and in their regular instrumental acrobatics. And when it's needed they're not afraid to breathe fire. Vinegar incorporated several traditional indie rock elements into their sound but with their flashy and complex arrangements it sounds like they ran off to join the circus!"Rock Fetish", Vinegar's debut album, builds on the circus rock tradition. It presents a parade of images that include sunshine guns, cowboy rides, and a host of strange animals led by your ringmaster, Jerry Springer. The variety is astounding. It mixes personal with aggressive songs and conventional with unconventional arrangements. There's even a surprise solo acoustic song, 'Useless', and the bittersweet semi-acoustic 'Breathe Again'. These contrast with the heavy instrumental fireworks of 'Pig 92' and 'Sunshine Gun'. The sequencing of the songs keeps the listener engaged all the way through starting with the stunning 'Forkball' and ending with the five and a half minute epic, 'Too Many Pills'. Each song is its own musical moment. But the variety is balanced with a consistent approach to melody and an edginess that keeps it all grounded and cohesive.
Vinegar's "Rock Fetish" is guitarsy power pop that doesn't take itself too seriously, but seriously rocks out!
