Since his departure from Genesis, Peter Gabriel has crafted a very successful career blending his slight, anguished voice with studio sorcery and a bevy of world-music influences. However, Us does very little to build a case for his artistic growth in the six years that separate it from the commercial milestone of So. During the hiatus, Gabriel's marriage broke up, which undoubtedly contributes to the self-consciousness and introspection that permeate the album. The pop psychology of "Love to Be Loved" and "Washing of the Water" is overwrought. The exotic instrumentation on "Come and Talk to Me" seems intrusive and contrived. "Steam" and "Kiss the Frog" lighten the tone, but, as good-natured rockers, they are no matches for "Sledgehammer" or "Big Time." The production values and supporting players are of the highest order, but, with this material, Gabriel comes across as hypersensitive. Except for die-hard fans, Us is So-lite. --Rob Stewart

In the run-up to this, her third album, Joss Stone told a phalanx of glossy magazines that the difference between this disc and the two that preceded it was a newfound clarity of vision. Whereas the other records--their gold status notwithstanding--represented the fumblings of a huge-voiced kid being bossed around by experienced music-biz types, this one, she promised, would reveal the real her. Thus, the titular "introduction." To which anybody who spins the 14 groovy and fully unbuttoned tracks herein will wish to reply not "nice to meet you"--far too lame a sentiment for so fully realized a disc--but "Where have you been all my life?" As good as Joss Stone's previous efforts are, Introducing Joss Stone represents a giant step forward: there's a freshness to these songs that suits her age (19 as of the album's release) and a funkiness that suits modern pop sensibilities. There's also a cross-hatching of visions with artists like Lauryn Hill and Common that will rightly advance her reputation as an artist who can sling disco, R&B, and rock almost as convincingly as soul. Splicing girl-group harmonies with blaxploitation-style funk with Joplin-esque and, at times, Shelby Lynne-reminiscent vocals, Stone works these Raphael Saadiq-produced beats with the stealth and steadiness of a '70s-era legend who's still going strong. Save your money...........2007-07-25

If you're looking for a great follow up to her first CD, you'd be hard pressed to find it here. "Introducing Joss Stone" sounds nothing like her first album, all of the songs are R&B based (not the jazz/blues/soul music of the first) and most of the lyrics I couldn't understand. I would think twice in purchasing this if you really liked the first album and are expecting something similar.

I love Joss Stone's voice. There's no denying it, the girl's got a set of pipes that are un-matched in this current generation of musicians, but I'm not sure Joss has found her groove yet.

Admittedly, at 14 she was too young to make the important decisions to launch her career, but this girl's been through more changes than the weather.

I think when she really hits her groove, folks will stop comparing her to Shelby Lynne, etc. It'll happen, but 19 may still be too young.

You want to hear a great Brit chick with more heart and identity, you need to listen to "Put your Records On" by Corrine Bailey Rae. Corrine doesn't have Joss' voice, but she's got down who she is.

I think this is the 5th review I have written today, so I guess you will have to deal with the silly puns. What you don't have to deal with is some lame R&B album. Joss Stone is squarely on the map with this effort. Buy this thing baby!

She has a rich voice and knows how to turn a phrase. Her style is not indicative of Joss turning 20 this year. If she is this good now, I can't wait to see what she has produced over a 20 or more year career.

Get this one because it she has a lot to offer, and this I think is only the beginning.

I put the CD on at work and declined to tell anyone who was singing until it was over. They had never heard of her but they were fans now. They were all dancing in their seats and wanted to buy the CD! They did not imagine a 19 year old British girl singing with so much funk and soul.

This an ALBUM. You truly can listen and enjoy from beginning to end. It wasn't created to just release one or 2 hit singles. She just keeps getting better and better. Cant wait to see her in concert!

With Boxer, the National have reached four albums into their increasingly lauded career, never hurrying the tempo, never over-reaching in volume or instrumental density. Instead, the quintet's balanced on a pin, emotionally austere, if not utterly downhearted, finding brilliantly dusky ways for Matt Berninger's lovelorn voice to mesh with a pair of unobtrusive guitars and, here, an occasional phalanx of piano, horns, and strings. The tunes roll off slowly, Berninger's lyrics hugging the instruments with a sad brawn, rough-hewn as the drums and bass toy with angularity (try "Mistaken for Strangers," for one) but end up woven by that voice. Drummer Bryan Devendorf presses the songs forward repeatedly, as on "Start a War," where he gently thumps the time as the acoustic guitars frame and dot the melody, coalescing as the drums starkly chisel the melody. I don't listen to much mainstream music (preferring orchestral) but I gave The National a listen because the members are friends of my brother. I loved their music, which amazingly seems to get better with each album. Boxer continues this trend.

There are plent of comments above about the music, so I would like to comment on the lyrics, which I think demonstrate a far greater maturity than what one typically hears on the radio. There's a focus on the mundane of everyday life and frequent poetic abstract imagery that makes it very fun to sing along.

Hypnotic and lush.......2007-07-22

I'm a new fan of The National but the strength of this album has convinced me to get their back catalog. Having just heard snippets of different songs I was unprepared for how much stronger their songs are in the context of the whole album. The first time I popped the album in I was taken back by the deep baritone of Matt Berninger's voice coming through my speakers. Ten seconds later the deep hypnotic drawl of his voice had grabbed me and dragged me deep into the National's sonic landscape. "Fake Empire" starts out catchy and strong and while the drums initially sound as if the drummer is pounding away to the wrong song, it quickly coalesces into one of the best tracks on the album. Another early favorite is the quiet, beautiful "Start a War" with one of my favorite chord progressions of all time. Overall the whole album is a somewhat subdued affair although the phenomenal drumming of Bryan Devendorf drives the music forward with intensity and urgency. Easily a pick for one of the top 10 best of 2007.

slow show.......2007-07-22

"29 years" ago (Slow Show)... actually, 3 years ago I came upon this majestic piece of music craftmanship titled "Wasp Nest" while surfing the Net. Wow! Ithought to myself what a great song that was, champagne glasses and all. Come this year, I stumbled upon this beatiful CD titled Boxer by the same band who wrote "Wasp Nest". Honestly, it is just absolutely perfect. I rarely buy CDs lately, but The National has done such a magnificent piece of art which made me reconcile with all the lost feelings I had about the music industry these days.... hands down, this is the CD to buy this year thus far. My prediction is that it will occupy the number #1 spot in many critics' lists at the end of the year (alongside LCD and Feist.) Well done guys! Keep up the good work!

I had heard Alligator and thought it was great, but....
From start to finish this is the most excellent, most wholly beautiful album I have heard in a long long time.
THE BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. bar none.
The first time and everytime after I listen to this I feel as though I have been hit by a bus.
I just didn't think music could make feel like I did when I was young(er) but I was wrong.

Beautifully crafted and tempered gem by a band reminiscent of Tindersticks. "Boxer" is a special album...rich, lush and atmospheric baroque pop. Every track is a keeper. In my top 5 for 2007.

The Smashing Pumpkins' greatest-hits album, Rotten Apples, traces the band's evolution (or devolution, depending on your feelings about the band's radical sonic shift in the mid-'90s) from its early days to its status among the kings of alt rock. For fans of the Pumpkins' beginnings as a tripped-out indie/art rock act, Apples opens with some of the band's strongest material. "Siva" and "Rhinoceros" (from Gish, the Pumpkin's first--and arguably best--album) seamlessly mixed dream pop with noisy goth-rock as prime examples of the Pumpkins' early '90s sound. helped me through hell.......2007-06-18

after i got this cd it was constantly playing, i have heard all these songs and uncounted amount of times and i still listen every day. the order of bullet and then the next track as 1979 is genius, also drown fits in very nicely at track 3. the only grapes i have with this album is that it wasnt like a 22 track cd, you know, the other 4 tracks should have been sprinkled in there. they should have been mayonaise, geek usa, muzzle, and go out with thirty-three. but it doesnt matter cuase i have every sp album, but still this cd is nicely put together, it really soothed my entire being on days where i really wanted to be done. but it and if u like it u need to at least buy siamese dream, and if you dont already know about mellon collie then like they say its never too late to get into some real music, completely unto itself. really there is nothing like it. and it is a gorgeous thing that no matter what comes the music of billy corgan and smashing pumpkins will live on.

Most of the greatist hits..........2007-04-20

Corgan and SP made some of the most creative songs during the 90s.Theres not many bands like them.

But when I bought the album I was a little dissipointed too see that there were some songs missing.Such as "Spaceboy", "Thirty-Three", "By Starlight", "Starla" and "Try,Try,Try".It might have also been cool if they added the "1979" Moby remix.

But all in all the album is awesome.I suggest people who are new too Smashing Pumpkins to buy this album before they go and get their other albums.If you like greatist hits I suggest you get MCATIS and Adore.But I think you won't regret getting this.

When it comes to "best of's" and compilations, very rarely can a collection successfully comprise a solid overview of a band's catalog. The Smashing Pumpkins' "Greatest Hits" is one of the few of these collections that actually satisfies, providing a very solid overview of the songs that propelled the band to stardom. Singles from "Gish" to "Machina: The Machines of God" are covered here, as well as "Eye" from the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway, and unreleased songs "Real Love" and "Untitled", which are actually pretty good as well. The only real downsides to this compilation are that no other non-singles are covered here, and the CD booklet features no kind of commentary at all from any of the band members. That aside, for casual fans of the Smashing Pumpkins, "Greatest Hits" isn't a bad pick up at all.

I really enjoyed this album. I've tried to buy this cd in the store, but can't find it (sold out). Amazon offered a much better price on it anyway, so I was able to save a little extra money. This cd truely offers the band's greatest hits in one cd. If you like The Smashing Pumpkins, which many people do, I highly suggest this cd.

The 2nd disc of rarities and b sides on the limeted edition is one of their best releases. Unless you dont own Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie, and Adore there is no reason to buy this, just get the other albums and make a mix. Or get the videos DVD.

These days, it seems anyone can make an R&B album. However, recording a soul album takes that special intangible element. The 17-year-old Devon, England, native first proved that she has it with The Soul Sessions, a collection of rare soul grooves. She does it here again with Mind, Body & Soul, her first album of original material. For those who thought that Stone could only interpret vintage ballads, witness the midtempo attitude of "Jet Lag." I liked every song!.......2007-07-10

This is Joss Stone's second album and I'm happy to say every song is good. I can't believe how talented she is. Her soulful vocals are the highlight of this album. I first heard Joss Stone on the radio with "Spoiled" and loved it. I was addicted to that song and it still remains to be my favorite song from the album. The first five or six songs are the best on the album but all of them are good. They're well written, well produced and well sung. If you have been curious about Joss Stone then I highly reccomend this album. I now am a Joss Stone fan. This is one of the best neo-soul albums since Heather Headley!

I loooooooooove this album. It's definitley the best of her three. The only songs I don't care for are "Understand" and "Sleep Like a Child". The rest are amazinggggg. Esp You Had Me, Right To Be Wrong, Jet Lag, Killing Time, Snakes and Ladders, Security, and Dontcha Wanna Ride.

When I heard Killing Time, I thought for sure it was a remake because it sounded like such a classic song. THen I looked it up and saw that Joss wrote it, AMAZING!

I have a thing for white soul singers. No offence intended to black soul singers, who are of course brilliant. It's just that I feel a very interesting and unique vibe when that rare white singer excels at this genre. It is a hybridization of spiritualities. And Joss Stone possesses amazing soul, incredible talent and rich personality. All this at the tender age of 17 when she recorded this album (she's now 19). It's mind-boggling to imagine how much better she can still become.

'Mind, Body and Soul' is a bit of a paradox. It is raw, yet perfect: its youthful rawness itself is very charming. What I ask of listeners is to give it time. The songs are generally very simple, a throwback to the days when music (and life) was simpler and more sincere. Because some of these songs lack a catchy hook and seem so simple, you might not like them at first listen. But have a bit of that patience that music fans used to have, and you might find that the simplicity is accompanied by great sincerity and feeling. It is such a refreshing change in the 21st century to hear music that is simply good and heartfelt, with no stunts.

The songs that most people will like quickly are 'Right to be Wrong' (fabulous musicianship and lyrics), 'Spoiled' (richly sentimental and lush), and 'Jet Lag' (fun). But after about 5-7 patient listens, you might find that every song has the capacity to charm you and connect you with this young genius. The songs that grew most on me were 'Security' (beautifully sincere, stirring, pretty in its idealism) , 'Young at Heart' (youthful idealism and defiance), 'Snakes and Ladders' (energetically soulful), 'Understand' (very relaxed and really fun), 'Don't Know How' (classic-sounding) and 'Sleep like a Child' (tender night song).

The icing on the cake comes with the hidden track at the end. Joss unleashes her angsty side with an intensity and depth of feeling that are astounding for a fun-loving 17-year old.

Not since Vonda Shepard have I liked a white soul singer this much. Joss Stone is phenomenal for a 17-year old and is that rare kind of singer who can really move people deeply even though her vocal technique is still quite far from perfect. She makes up for it by singing straight from her amazing soul.

Joss Stone continues with the formula that served her well in her first album, reaching back for some old school soul and putting her distinctive touch on it. There is a reason that some of the great artists and producers from the 60's and 70's have worked with her, they see that she has the gift to sing SOUL!!

Right to Be Wrong, Spoiled, Jet Lag, and Snakes and Ladders are just some of the highlights of this great album. The mix of songs shows her skill with dance tunes as well as slow jams.

There is absolutely no sophomore jinx here. If you really like soul, just listen to a couple of track samples and you will be hooked!

Stone's Continuation Toward Greatness.......2007-04-20

On "Mind, Body, and Soul," Joss Stone had to follow up her phenomenal first release, "The Soul Sessions," where she took old but mostly unknown R&B songs and reworked them with a magic touch and a magic voice. So the challenge was clear: was she going to be able to do a CD of newer material and capture listeners as she has with the previous release?

I think the answer is a resounding yes. This CD demonstrates that "The Soul Sessions" weren't a fluke and that Joss Stone sounds just as good singing today's soul as she does singing yesterday's soul. She has a voice that shames vocalists with twenty or thirty more years of living than she has, and she seems to do it effortlessly.

"Right To Be Wrong," "Jet Lag," "Don't Cha Wanna Ride," and the other songs on "Mind, Body, and Soul" just prove that Joss Stone has a wonderful career ahead of her.

I had the great fortune of being a teenager when this album first came out. Many (too many) years later I still find this an incredible example of artistic creativity and sheer talent. The Smashing Pumpkins' eclectic style shines more so here than any other CD (Siamese Dream was great but fairly uniform). Some may complain of "fillers", but to be honest I do not think there is a single song on this double CD that would make the whole better by its removal (even James Iha's two entries--which I originally found intollerable, have grown on me as a pleasant and partially tongue-in-cheek break from Corgan's downpour of emotions and ideas). After this album, the Pumpkins went off in new directions, never returning to the brilliance demonstrated in Mellon Collie.

The Smashing Pumpkins are one of if not the greatest band of the 1990s, and will some day be concidered on eof the greatest bands of all time. Many people concider Mallon Collie And The Infinite Sadness to be the bands best album and one of the greatest albums ever. Well thats because it is. The band was at its best here. Siamese Dream is a much better album as a whole, but this because it has so many songs has more room for error. Many feel the album would have been better as a single disc, we'll see.

Corgan who we all came to find would go back and rerecord over everyone elses stuff once they left the studio so he really is the only one that you here. He is at his best musicaly, idealy, and lyricly.

Disc One: Dawn To Dusk

'Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness' the title track which opens the album does it perfectly. 'Tonight, Tonight' 'Zero' and the massive success of 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' were all big hit singles still get played quite a bit on the radio. 'Zero' which is maybe the best thing the band ever recorded is so in your face that it is not even funny. The lyrics are just scary, and deppresing at the same time. The guitar is some of Corgans best, a classic thats for sure. 'Tonight, Tonight' apart from having one of the all time greatest music videos to accompany it is one of the bands better songs. With mostly acoustic guitar and lots of string arrangements this song is a sure win. 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' is The Smashing Pumpkins all time biggest hit and one of the most over played songs of all time, but it is still one of the best songs ever and the lyrics are pure poetry. Corgan has some issues as you can tell from listening to this song. 'Cupid De Locke' and 'Take Me Down' are both very similar songs.They are both slower and quiter then most of the rest of the first side and are very beautiful songs. 'Here Is No Why' is a harder rocker and a great asset to the album. 'Galapogos' 'Muzzle' and 'Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans' are all songs that the album could have done with out.

All in all the first half of the album is pretty good. Only a few songs that could be thrown out, and the rest is amazing.

Disc Two: Twilight To Starlight

'Where Boys Fear To Tread' opens the second have greatly. 'Bodies' keeps the album going nicley and segues right into 'Thiry-Three' which is also one of the best songs on the album. '1979' is the only really big song on the album and it was massive when released as a single. The song that introduced most to The Smashing Pumpkins. Easily one of the best songs Corgan ever wrote, very electronic and goth, but very good with great drumming and nice guitar effects add a nice feel to the song that sets it apart from the rest of the album. 'X.Y.U.' is just insane, a very interesting song that is slightly out of place on the album but is still a great song. 'Lilly (My One And Only)' maybe the best song on the second disc. Its hard to explain, the piano and the song are so peppy and cheer full but the lyrics are sort of sad. A perfect song, and a truly original one at that. 'In The Arms Of Sleep' 'Thru The Eyes Of Ruby' and 'By Starlight' could have all benifited the album had they not been recorded. They are really just filler and the album would be a lot better with out them.

Once again disc two is really good except for a few songs that are nothing more then filler, but over all another great side to the album.

All in all could Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness been left a single album no! While yes there are still a number of songs that could have been left off there would still be way to many songs for a single disc, this album had to be big and huge and over the top. Could it have benifited from less songs, yes it could have. Is this the bands best album, no not by a long shot, is it one of the better albums in rock history, yes it is. Should you own it, is that even a question you are really debating at this point, click the order button.

An introductory drum roll drops out and is replaced by a single suspended electric guitar, which is then paralleled by a snare, filled in with the bass, and--crash!--"Cherub Rock," the opening track, is enveloped in an explosion of metal guitar. So the journey begins. This album is pre-experimentation vintage Pumpkins. Produced by Butch Vig (Garbage, Sonic Youth, Nirvana's Nevermind), Siamese Dream is first about guitars. Lots and lots of guitars. A very close second is Jimmy Chamberlain's unquestionably excellent power drumming. Throughout each song, Billy Corgan delivers angsty lyrics in his signature breathy whine. "Disarm" is a nice intermission halfway though the album. As the title of the song suggests, it throws the listener into a different mood with its full string arrangements and radiant orchestral chimes. Siamese Dream (1993.) The second Smashing Pumpkins studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
With the advent of the alternative music movement in America, new bands were surfacing all across the country. Among them was Billy Corgan's band, the Smashing Pumpkins. The group had already gained a cult following of sorts after touring with other, more popular acts. Their following had increased further with the release of Gish, their first full-length studio album. Two years later, after numerous conflicts and hardships, including Corgan's depression and Jimmy Chamberlain's drug problem, the album was finally released.

OVERVIEW:
Siamese Dream was released in 1993. The band's second studio album featured the classic lineup of Billy Corgan on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jimmy Chamberlain on drums, James Iha on lead guitar, and D'arcy on bass. Guest musicians Eric Remschneider and David Ragsdale provide string arrangements and violin/cello for some tracks.

REVIEW:
Despite the sessions for this album being plagued with hardships coming from every corner of the band, the end product was more than worth it. Billy Corgan had written over fifty songs during the sessions, and was going to disband the group if the album was a failure. Fortunately, he didn't have to do that. Siamese Dream catapulted the band into the American mainstream, and scored even more hits than Gish. The band's sound here is much more mature and developed than on Gish, and this results in a stronger, more coherent album.

-Cherub Rock:
One of the biggest hits on the album, and of the band's career. This song beautifully combines a melodic, peaceful sound, with the hard and heavy rock of the band's early days. The fusion of these two styles results in an absolute masterpiece.

-Quiet:
It's called Quiet, but this song is anything but. This is straight-up, distortion-driven rock. James Iha's distortion-heavy rock guitar sound makes this yet another worthwhile tune. It would not have been out of place on Gish, the band's first album.

-Today:
One of the reasons so many people like the Smashing Pumpkins is for their ability to combine heavy and soft sounds alike. And that reason is why this song was such a big hit. Slow and melodic verses are combined with guitar-intensive choruses and interludes, making for yet another worthwhile track.

-Hummer:
Another fusion of melodic rock and the distortion-intensive material the band was so well known for in its infancy. The final two minutes are all melodic, abandoning the hard and heavy structure of the rest of the song. What results is another great track. While not as popular as some of the other songs on here, this one is no less excellent.

-Rocket:
With Corgan and Iha alike shelling out multiple guitar tracks, this song takes hold of your attention and never lets go. It's another one of the distortion-intensive tunes (clearly the band hadn't outgrown them yet), but the use of the multiple tracks and awesome melodies makes this one a stand-out.

-Disarm:
By far the biggest hit on the album, and definitely the most popular song the band ever recorded that didn't come from Mellon Collie. This isn't your average rock song - it's filled with classical-style melodies, including string sections courtesy of the guest musicians, and church bells chiming. The song doesn't rock hard at all, but it doesn't have to. The beautiful melodies on this song must be heard to be appreciated. Absolute masterpiece.

-Soma:
For the first half of this song, the band shows off their melodic rock side, and quite well. And then, come the second half, James Iha enters the picture, rocking out full force. This one is a fan favorite because it has the best of both musical worlds.

-Geek U.S.A.:
Despite its awkward title, this song rocks hard and never backs down - except for during a very brief, melodic interlude. Once again, Iha is on fire (this guy is such an underrated guitarist.) Awesome track that deserved more credit.

-Mayonaise:
Another distortion-intensive rocker. The band tries to fool you with a minute-or-so long melodic introduction, but catches you off guard with heavy riffs when you least expect it. This album is laden with underrated treasures, and this is one of them.

-Spaceboy:
Here the band takes a break from the rockers and tries something completely different. Acoustic guitars and orchestral backing instrumentation is the primary sound here. These deviations from the rest of the album make this one of the stand-out tracks, even if it wasn't one of the more popular ones on here.

-Silverf*ck:
This is an interesting song, because it's simultaneously the loudest and the quietest song on the album. The intro and outro parts rock hard, even harder than anything else on the album. But a lengthy interlude in the middle is extremely low-pitched - hell, it's even pretty difficult to hear unless you turn up your stereo full blast. But once again, they're nice melodies. Another good fusion of two musical extremes.

-Sweet Sweet:
Less than two minutes in length, this is the shortest song on the album. The instrumentation is all acoustic and classical flavored. It's an excellent melody, and the only weakness is its brevity.

-Luna:
The band closes out the album with another slow-paced, melodic tune that heavily implements classical instrumentation. It's another unique track, and definitely stands another solid one. Great closer.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a greatest album, one of the finest alternative rock albums to come out of the nineties. It's not quite the masterpiece Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness would be - while the band has began maturing, it's clear they're still not above the distortion-filled rock sound that filled their early days. If you're new to the Smashing Pumpkins and you're trying to decide which album or albums you want to purchase, I would recommend buying this one, along with Mellon Collie. Final verdict? VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This is, in my opinion, Smashing Pumpkins' best album. "Gish" and "Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness" are also good, but this is their masterpiece. Still has a unique sound to me- imagine how unique it was then...

An Alt-Rock Masterpiece.......2007-06-29

This album is so good, it puts a lump in my throat just thinking about it. Very rarely are there great "albums" released anymore, where from the first song to the last, the music is strong and artfully arranged to make one complete "book" of music. I love this album, I love this sound. To me, this captures the best of the Pumpkins - the driving guitar and drums. What is that signature Pumpkins distortion on the guitar? Amazing. There's another song out there right now that has a similar sound and screaming vocals. It's not the SP, but it sure sounds like them!

well this will be review 450 and i guess there aint much to say that hasnt been said at this point. so shut my mouth and strike the demons... yeah, you see i was only 4 when it came out and my sister who was only 8 had it new. the thing is i dont really remember much of it from when i was a kid. so skip some odd years later plus a shattered soul and you have me at 18, a diehard pumpkins fan of about only a year, and when i first heard sweet, sweet again it was instant nostalgia of heart warming bliss, like that song had never left my heart all those years. all in all it is the best sp album because it is the most flawless even though personally i find no flaws in any sp material. i will listen to these songs until my heart beat implodes, nothing short of that. the thing is that my taste in music is so big that i could kick it with most that love all good music, and still could not say there is anything in the history of music like the splash in "TODAY" after those opening chords of angel dust...nothing! billy better be playing most if not all of these songs on upcoming shows, hard to do when his songs list is extremely dense, still i'll prolly be the guy in the front wearing my zero tee yelling play SWEET SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

an all time favorite.......2007-05-19

Why do I keep losing this CD?! I've bought it about 6 times now and I love it every bit as much as I did back in Chicago when I first heard it, so many years ago. I love the Pumpkins, I love their ever changing sound. But this is one of those "top 5 stranded on a desert island" CDs for me, and I suspect it always will be. It's pure, raw, energetic Pumpkins at the very beginning of their long and glorious run...which is finally kicking up again soon. It's one of the few albums I own where I love every single song. A classic.

The band that proclaimed itself "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" has long since represented rock's most overarching confluence of art and commerce--with a distinct emphasis on the latter in recent decades--a notion this 40-track, five-decade-spanning anthology can't completely escape. While this is the first anthology to gather hits from the band's entire career, it's the early tunes that highlight one of the Stones' central ironies: virtually their entire "bad boy" reputation was built working for The Man. That original '60s musical arc bounded from '50s rock and R&B revivalism ("Not Fade Away," "The Last Time") to anti-Mop Top aggression ("Satisfaction," "Get Off My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown") to proto-goth cynicism ("Paint It Black," "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby") and psychedelic minstrelsy ("She's a Rainbow," "Ruby Tuesday") to the epitome of blues-based cock rock ("Street Fighting Man," "Jumpin' Jack Flash") in quick succession. An excellent 2-disc set that has all of the Stones's big hits up to the date of release - spans over 30 years of hits. The only people who could find fault with this coompilation are people whose personal favorite didn't make it. There won't be many such people tho. This is very complete, at least for those of us who primarily know the Stones from the radio.

Stong album of music but compromised ethically and aesthetically.......2007-07-17

I enjoy this mix and it makes for a great way to get remastered sound on career highlights spanning the decades without me having to re-purchase all the CDs.

For those complaining about the inclusion of latter-day songs or the exclusion of deeper tracks, please spare me with your self-righteous declarations of purity. Clearly, the intention here is to provide a 40-year-career retrospective that caters to the common denominator among devoted and casual fans of all generations. In this sense, this compact album of songs makes a strong statement of the band's accomplishments and sounds over four decades. Devoted followers of the band can choose (and probably already have chosen) from numerous other albums/compilations that serve other purposes.

For me, however, I have serious reservations about the ethical and aesthetic compromises made in compiling this album. First, listeners should be warned of the tracks that are newly edited versions of the originally-released versions. I cannot believe how much shorter some of these are. "Miss You" is over one minute shorter than the original studio release. "Mixed Emotions" is over 1/2 minute shorter! To not offer a brief disclaimer somewhere on the exterior of the package is an ethical assault on the consumer. Altering the originals for convenience of packaging is an aesthetic compromise I'm unwilling to endorse.

You Can't Always Get What You Want- But You Get What You Need.......2007-07-17

I have to admit that building my summer sand castle was quite some chore. Chore at the shore if you will. Little did I know that when I picked this spot it was next to a beach mime colony. You got that right. They walk around and imagine stepping on seashells and use imaginary fishing poles to catch - you got it - nothing! My life has turned into an Antonioni nightmare. But, the good thing is that at least it's quiet and peaceful here at night.
Anyway, I am here to review the Stones 2 disc set called "Forty Licks" which is supposed to represent their forty years as a rock band. I don't think I could add any new insight into their music that you don't already know. Do remember though that they started out as a rythmn and blues group which grew more and more into the rock genre.
This is a good representative set of many of their mega-hits and best known songs. For the most part I think it is a satifactoy cross section of all their years. Although, I do have an issue of what was not included. I think "Tell Me" from their early years could certainly have been included. As well as "Rock and a Hard Place" from the Steel Wheels album. Should I also include "Monkey Man" from the Let It Bleed album? Well, we could go on and on et cetera et cetera of all the songs that weren't included. And, thinking it over, this could easily have been a 3 disc set and still not touch on all there is. My advice is, that if you really want the complete Stones, then get all their offerings. There are a few clunkers out there-but most of the albums are superb and probably show the band through many periods of their existence. They also have produced many, many live albums. Probably the very best would be Get Your Ya-Yas Out followed by Stripped. But, again, that is only my opinion.
Still, I think the material here is the most concise collection since the marriage of their record companys. Certainly it beats Hot Rocks by a mile. I understand what they were doing here - trying to give us a cross section of all their years. However, that said, I think their classic older tunes beat out the newer ones - but that is me just being picky.
I also think that many out there probably have a nonchalant opinion of them. "Oh, it's just the Stones again- God are they old"! You all know the drill. They have been around so long that it's easy for some to become complacent and not find anything they do to be of any consequence anymore. But this set, I think, will set those self-appointed pundits straight.
First off, they certainly have proven that they deserve the mantle of being mega-talents. You just have to listen to all they have done and marvel at the creativity and talent they possess. Alot of this is because of the Jagger-Richards collaboration. Keith is master of the groove and hook, meanwhile Jagger's lyrics are probably some of the best I've ever heard. The combination is lethal and, I believe, gave Lennon-McCartney a run for their money for many, many years. But, looking back, you would have thought that, at the beginning, the Stones would have burned out while the Beatles would have survived. Reality, though, has dealt us a strange twist of fate by proving the opposite is true. The fact that they are still at it, producing rock music of quality, is testimony to how great they really are.
I have seen these guys in concert many times. Really, I think that their shows were some of the best I've ever seen. I still can't get over Jagger ripping his scarf off and whipping the stage and throwing rose petals at the audience during "Midnight Rambler". And those huge blow-up women on the sides of the stage during "Honkey Tonk Women". They know how to do a show- that is for sure.
In closing, this 2 disc set is definitely worth owning, even if you have most of their material already. Why? Most of the great ones are here- in one package. And, although they have had many compilations (maybe too many?) in the past-most of the good stuff is right here. I believe that they are the world's greatest "Rock and Roll Band". Certainly there are others that are great. But, none of them have yet to reach the longevity. I say, keep rockin' guys. You really have nothing more to prove at this point. My only assumption is that you do it because you love the music. I love it too. And many others as well.
Now I must get back to my beach obligations. The mimes are imitating a Rolling Stones concert tonight. And, wouldn't you know? I have to provide the music!

These guys must have sold their souls to the devil because there is no other way one band could strike gold so many times. You can simply put this CD into your player and be entertained for hours. The only reason to skip a song is because you want to hear one great song before you hear the other great song.

A must have for any Stone's fans-even if your not. It has like 40 of their best well known songs, mostly their classics I believe. And a few new one's, like "love is strong". I highly reccommend this CD, you get to own a piece of the LEGENDS!!

I saw the movies Goodbye Lenin! and Amelie around the same time as the former was released while I was in Germany. I was struck by the powerful compositions in both films and when I heard they were by the same guy, I immediately went out to get both soundtracks.

The thing that strikes me about Mr. Tiersen is his ability to somehow communicate directly to my soul like very few musicians can. It's uncanny. I think this is a truly can't miss album, but really just about everything the man produces is incredible. Do yourself a favor and buy this album, and then check out his other works as they are also very special.

Will not indwell too much as I can go on forever about this album. Certainly the best soundtrack I have ever heard. Full of joy and beatiful melodies/harmonies.

Nothing lifts me up more than this. I always travel with the soundtrack. Once again, the movie like "the hours" couldn't reach its great successs without this beautiful soundtrack. I think Yann is probably the most talented musician I have heard from in a very long time.

The most amazing thing is that the music can suit all moods, happy, playful, upset, bored, but most of all dreamful and optimistic.

It is certainly the soundtrack of a century.
Thumbs up and hat off to Yann.

Throw away your Zoloft, Paxil, whatever... Just put on this soundtrack and smile! Witty, charming yet soulful, this CD is absolutely fabulous. It's impossible to be depressed while listening to this music. I find that whatever I'm doing, I do it better with this CD playing. Even my cat and greyhound seem happier when they hear it. Go get it! Your world will be a better place.

Rock, blues, ballads.......2007-07-20

This landmark 1971 album gave the Stones a massive hit with Brown Sugar. Together with Bitch and the extended jam Can't You Hear Me Knocking it is one of three powerful rock songs while the rest of the album contain soulful, bluesy or country-tinged ballads.

These ballads are all rather dark and brooding, from the melancholy Wild Horses to the unoriginally titled but moving I Got the Blues and the chilling Sister Morphine, whilst Dead Flowers with its country flavor has poetic lyrics and an addictive tune.

The album concludes with the yearning Moonlight Mile, a final unforgettable track. This mix of melodious ballads and power rock make Sticky Fingers a masterpiece and one of that decade's top albums by the greatest rock band of all time.

A MASTERPIECE! ROCK, COUNTRY AND BLUES AT IT'S FINEST!.......2007-07-10

This is a classic album and is certainly in the top 100 ever made! My personal favorite cut is "Sway" I just love to hear Mick Taylor wailing away on his guitar until the fade out. Every cut is exceptional and there are a few hits on this album "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" mainly and "Bitch",but this album goes much deeper than those obvious cuts with the classic country "Dead Flowers" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" which rocks all the way to the jazz-like end! Every song is worth mentioning and this album should be in every music lovers collection.

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often ask to review and talk about various rock recordings from the 60's and 70's.

The Rolling Stones Mick Taylor period is a treasure chest that never empties. Mick was the most advantageous choice for the group. His leads, fills, and general sound pushed the band to new heights.

"Sticky Fingers" runs with the smoothest of engines from start to finish. The tracks are incredible examples of the Stones diversity and ability to excel. While the casual fan will gravitate toward "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses", don't deprive yourself of one of the most underrated tunes ever "Sway." Mick Taylor has his patent of excellence all over the arrangement of "Can't You Hear Me knocking."

Often the word great is used to excess but in this case it doesn't do justice!

Mick Taylor we miss you. A shame you left.

Good Stones album..but the best?.......2007-04-19

"Sticky Fingers" isnt just a great Stones album, but a great classic rock album as well. The only thing that I have to debate about this album is that I dont think its the best Stones record. The honor would have to go to "Let it Bleed" Now, I am in no way comparing this to "Let it Bleed" because that just wouldn't be fair, since every song on "Let it Bleed" is excellent, which makes it an easy five star effort. The reason I give this only four stars is that is falls just a bit short from perfect. I feel when you are reviewing Stones albums from this time frame, that you have to be a little more judgemental, since the late 60's/ all 70's time frame was the best for the band. They even had some early 80's solid albums, but no where near the musical effort as the earlier stuff. "Sticky Fingers" seems to fall a bit short with "You gotta move", and "Dead Flowers" which in my opinion seem to be blues songs that are forced, instead of the blues infused "Sister Morphine" , and "Moonlight Mile" which the band seems to flow more gracefully. I am sure there will be some that love those songs, but I feel that they are just a bit overdone, and they just arent very solid songs, if that makes any sense. Its still a great record from the Stones, but I feel that it just isn't pefect, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be in everyone's CD collection. ENJOY!

Their best album. And my favorite album of all. But one star goes away for not remastering this one as they have the CD's of the early years. Surely it is deserving.
