A Canadian who grew up gazing south across the border, guitarist, songwriter and singer Robbie Robertson has built much of his best music around American culture, as witnessed by his work with the Band, built around narratives steeped in evocative American blues, folk, and R&B accents. His self-titled 1987 solo debut veered toward a more ambitious, impressionistic style that somewhat submerged his earlier sense of musical geography, but this 1991 successor finds Robertson once more rooting his songs in the Deep South, taking its title from New Orleans's fabled red-light district--the symbolic birthplace for of jazz. These songs evoke the Crescent City in the recurrent second-line rhythms, warm horn choruses, and choral call-and-response of the arrangements, while Robertson's unvarnished but indelible baritone and yearning falsetto testifies on the preachers, con men, drifters, and star- crossed lovers of his well-crafted songs. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Class act.......2007-04-16

All I can say is,the world needs more of Storyville. A DVD at Austin City Limits, new album, whatever. They just weren't done yet. Great great stuff!!

5 out of 5 stars If you're from Texas and missed ever seeing them live..........2006-08-28

you should be kicking yourself repeatedly in the head. The energy and quality of their performances was incredible - always had me moving, impossible to sit still when hearing them. A Piece of Your Soul definitely required listening for fans of the southern blues/rock genre.

5 out of 5 stars Concurr on the "Why aren't they HUGE" thing.......2006-04-16

This CD, their second I believe, was accidentally brought to my attention by a friend. My reaction was immediate and powerful. I was hooked. I have since played it for several other friends, in California, Texas, and Tennessee, and they all seem to experience the same reaction I had. With that in mind, I do find it hard to comprehend their relative obscurity. Malford Milligan's vocals demonstrate the power of Sam Cooke with the facility of Stevie Wonder, and Grissom's subtle effects on tasty riffs are only outdone by his composition skills. This band rocks with a southern flavor, with LA style production. I have been dearly hoping to see them and am encouraged that rumors are about that they may tour soon...

5 out of 5 stars Didn't know they existed.......2006-02-04

I didn't even know this band existed until a guitar player friend of mine gave it to me. I absolutely love this CD. The music is great and the beat is awesome. I can't help but get into the music. I find myself driving down the road just belting out tunes along with the CD. Not a pretty site, but FUN!

5 out of 5 stars I'm so lucky . . ........2005-07-22

Reading the reviews for Storyville, I'm so pleased to see such enthusiasm for their art. They truly are fantastic. Their brand of blues is phenomenal, and I still mourn their "passing". The lyrics are inspired, touching, heartfelt blues material. I was so lucky to catch Malford Milligan in a show in Austin recently and to find out he has released a CD of his own. It truly was a heartbreaking tragedy when Storyville split.

Please Jesus up in heaven. Please take away Robbie Robertsons vocal chords.

4 out of 5 stars Moody ! Oh soooo mooody........2006-04-17

Robbie Robertson with his sometimes harseness wispering singin is a gem to listen to it. This Cd has much of this moody magic. Track 1 The Night Parade has a certain touch of "woodoo" musical magic, that hit`s your soul like a curse, and never let it go before it`s finish. Magical.
Track 2 Hold back the Dawn is more laidback in it`s structure, and Robertson voice is in a very relaxabel mood all trough. Track 3 Go back to your woods, it`s in the funky world of music. It`s a minor let down, because the help from Bruce Hornsby shines to much inbetween. Hornsby is not at all bad, but this hybrid doesn`t feel right in Robertson`s world. Track 4 Soap Box Preacher, with Band member Garth Hudson on keyboard, brings back the magic. And it realy helps with Neil Young on the background vocals too. This one realy does it in every department. Track 5 Day of Reconing is in the U 2 land of music, with a dash of reagge rythm. Here Robertson "talk sings" and he paint`s very colorful music in your`e mind so to speak. Track 6 What about now, doesn`t sparks to much. It has an ok refrain, which is easy to remember, but that`s not enough as a whole. Track 7 Shake this town has a shaky feel all trough. Rythmic and effective with an interesting horn section as a background carpet. Everytime Garth Hudson touches his keyboard it lifts the song above average, so also on this one. Track 8 Breakin the rules is more in the "cellar dweller" genre of music. It "stays " there in a way, and it`s to little uplifting. Track 9 Ressurrection is much better. Here Robertson sings with more passion, and yes it`s a ressurection to listen to. And a keyboard solo from Hudson is not a minus. Brings very much flair into the music. Track 10 Sign of the Rainbow, is the sympho side of Robertson. Sometimes ok. But sometimes to much of everything. This is more in gospel land. Aaron Neville background vocals helps, but this is more in his genre of singin. Anyway. This CD has a the mood to give you soulfull pleasure most of the time.

5 out of 5 stars J Robbie Robertson at his best!.......2005-08-03

What a great album. I am a huge fan of 'The Band' and I have to disagree with the other reviewers who said that this should have been a 'Band' album. Robbie's songs here are more mature and sung with just as much heartfelt emotion as Rick, Levon or Richard could muster up in the sixties and seventies with 'The Band'. There are band fans out there who, perhaps due to the rift between Robbie and Levon, dismiss Robertson's post 'Band' work as substandard. Well this simply isn't true. This is a truly great album with only one or two tracks that may not be to everyone's liking. Check out his first solo effort aswell which is self titled.

5 out of 5 stars One of my top five of all time.......2005-02-15

When the art of songwriting and musical performance reach this level there are no words to describe the result. With a collection in excess of 4,000 CDs, I am hard pressed to find one with more soul or that has such an emotional punch. If you love music that moves you and you search for an artist that is outside the commercial norm, this is a recording for you.

3 out of 5 stars Great songwriting, but needs Levon Helm and Rick Danko.......2004-12-28

The Band was the quintessential example of synergy in pop music. Robbie Robertson wrote wonderful songs, Levon and Rick sang them, and the unique sound cemented by Garth Hudson made them probably the best band of the late 1960s and 1970s. Well at least they were my favorite band from that era.

This album has songs equally as good as the songs Robertson wrote for The Band, which is saying a lot. And when you hear Rick Danko's back up vocals on this album, you can't help but feel that the vocal roles should be swapped. I'm not one for nostalgia, but this album invokes feelings that this could well be the best Band album ever if only...

That said, someone should cover some of these songs, because the songwriting is first rate.

5 out of 5 stars What You Need To Know.......2006-11-16

Bluest Eyes showcases the commanding vocals of Malford Milligan, fronting STORYVILLE, an amazing all-star band (all native Texans) who originally came together at Antone's Nightclub in Austin, TX. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton played in Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble and The Arc Angels. Rhythm guitarist David Grissom played in Joe Ely's backing band.
Produced by guitarist STEPHEN BRUTON (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, T Bone Burnett). Bluest Eyes won six awards at the 1995 Austin Music Awards, including Best Band and Best Single. The album was rated highly in mainstream publications upon its initial release. This album has been out of print for over six years and has become highly sought-after. This CD reissue features the original album art, and includes new liner notes.

Featuring former members of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Ely, and John Mellencamp's backing bands, Storyville, one would figure, would have nothing but blues and roots rock swimming in their gene pool. Guess again. On its third album, the Austin, Texas, quintet is much more funky and hard-rocking than can rightly be expected for a band with its pedigree. With Malford Milligan's soulful vocalizing providing supple counterpoint to the potent guitar tandem of David Grissom and Dave Holt, Storyville blusters through everything from slightly spacey rockers ("Fairplay") to heartfelt ballads ("Talk to Me"). While they don't do anything overtly adventurous here--like, say, cover Peter Gabriel (as they did on their 1994 debut, Bluest Eyes)--they aren't likely to be mistaken for just another run-of-the-mill Texas barbecue-and-boogie outfit. --Michael Evans

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER CLASSIC BLUES / ROCK CD.......2004-02-05

These guys can do no wrong.( and still they didn't make it ) No matter which one of their CD's you listen to, this is classic BLUES / ROCK. This is as good an example of the genre as you can get. All 3 of their CD's are must haves for anyone who likes musik. The songs are intelligent, infectious and very emotional.
MALFORD MILLIGAN is an exceptional singer who can deliver deap emotions or stirring anthems with the same class and originality. The presence of DOUBLE TROUBLE ensures a tight, bouncy and highly energetic rythm section while the guitar tandem of GRISSOM and HOLT shine throughout with expert playing and very inventive musical patterns. There is variety to burn on this CD and again there is not one dud track. I would give you my favourite tracks, but they change almost after every listen. Do yourself a favour and discover this great band. It is hard to understand that they broke up after only 3 CD's. Even harder to understand is the relative obscurity that they find themselves in. These guys should have been superstars.

4 out of 5 stars Austin based band including Double Trouble.......2001-02-25

Storyville is a guitar band with some great guitar riffs and excellent vocals. This band has a slight R&B feel but also reminds me some of Bad Company. The CD just sort of grows on you and you will find that several hours after listening, that certain songs will still be playing in your head. Storyville was the first band for Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. And I think had the expectations not been so great for this band, they might have lasted a little longer. However, because many thought they would be a supergroup, the pressure to sell tons of records was maybe a bit much. It is too bad because this is a very good band.

Dog Years is the sophomore effort from Storyville. The CD is produced by Steven Bruton and the sound is a little harder than the first CD. The songs are written by different members unlike the first CD which featured Grissom as the principle writer. Once again the killer song is a ballad, "Talk to Me". "If you can tell me what you are thinking, find the words for how you feel, understanding is forgiving, I can give you what you need, Darling talk to me". This is the chorus and what an adult piece of songwriting and Mulligan in his vocals really sells the song. When listening, try "Enough" (tr#1), "Who's Left Standing" (tr#4), and "Talk to Me" (tr#7).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent cds.......2000-05-18

All three of Storyville cds are excellent. The Bluest Eyes is the best blues album of all; lyrics and music alike! A sublime dream! Since one of the reviewers ask about the availability of the Bluest Eyes: you can find it at the Waterloo store in Austin (waterloo@eden.com)

5 out of 5 stars Dog Years is the best!.......2000-05-15

I loved Storyville from the moment I heard their second cd, A Piece Of Your Soul. Dog Years is by far better. My fave's are Born Without You, Don't Make Me Suffer, and There's A Light, which is dedicated to Stevie Ray. This album will please those who like blues mixed with a classic rock sound. I only wish they were still a band and touring. These guys also have a cd titled "blues Eyes", which is hard to find. But being the dedicated fan I am, I called Waterloo Records in Austin, Texas, and ordered it from them.

4 out of 5 stars double trouble at it again.......2000-04-05

5 out of 5 stars Really Nice Stride Piano........2004-01-16

Since nobody has reviewed this disc, I'll do the service: I have this CD, and it's one of my favorites. It features the wonderful Teddy Wilson on solo stride piano. These sides were cut c.1939-40 in NYC, and were previously unreleased on CD. Wilson's estate made the old 78s available to Storyville. These are great tracks featuring some classic standards and some Wilson originals. Wilson (along with Nat Cole) was one of the last great stride pianists: this just before Theolonius Monk and Oscar Peterson began swinging and bopping hard. Wilson's style recalls Jellyroll Morton and James P. Johnson--but more advanced. Wilson's technique is very fine. Disc timing is good.

It's not a cheap disc, but it's for aficianados who will settle for nothing less than the absolute best: it's worth every little penny!

A few ballads, but complex Bebop at breakneck speeds are the center of gravity of this album, so it's not as laid back as other Getz albums.
    From the very early 50's.
This album is duplicated in it's entirety on the Complete Roost Session 3 CD set, so if you already have that, you don't need this.

Standout songs are Thou Swell, The Song is You & Everything happens to me.

Sound recorded live with old tape recorders is murky with a lot of jitter. Performance 3, recording 1 & 1/2.

    Album Description

The Duke Box contains a generous serving of more than eight hours of music from what many consider the greatest decade of the greatest orchestra in the history of jazz.

What's more, the Duke and his men, among them the incomparable Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, Lawrence Brown, "Tricky" Sam Nanton, Harry Carnet, Rex Stewart, Barney Bigar d and Jimmy Blanton are captured live in dance halls, night clubs, concert halls and radio studios...with a you-are-there feeling absent from most commercial recordings.

We are lucky indeed that these slice-of-life sound documents survivie, or were made in the first place, such as the unique Fargo dance date, and hearing it chronologically places this grand music in a very special and illuminating perspective.

There are numbers you may know but never heard like this before and when there are several versions, each is different , and then there are some things that even seasoned Ellingtonians will encounter for the first time. So come on in for your special date with the immortal Duke!

5 out of 5 stars Ellington at his best.......2007-05-16

It's increasingly difficult to get a good sampling of Duke Ellington's music from any source other than a "collector's" label. The Duke Box offers a great sampling of Ellingtonia, for $9 a disc. The sound is always at least adequate and sometimes excellent. The Fargo performances, 2.5 hours on discs 2 and 3 are incredible -- clear, vibrant sound and incredible musicianship. They're among the very best Ellington recordings. Thank you, Storyville!

3 out of 5 stars Too pricy for the content.......2007-05-13

Two of the recordings are excellent and representative of Duke's live performances. The Fargo recordings are outstanding. The other material is superfulous, and at times the fidelity suffers. The Concert at Carnagie Hall was quite good from a historical perspective.

I would recommend that Blue Note issue the Fargo recordings as a solo album at a lower price. True lovers of Duke and the big band sounds might find the box album a good buy. I am a collector, and a lot of this stuff I have on other disks. I would recommend other albums--- the Blanton recordings, with the phenomenal bass of Jimmy Blanton. Also, the live Newport Jazz Festival recordings (2-cds) are very good.

3 out of 5 stars Some things are better remembered, than relived........2007-05-12

The packaging is well done. Transcription to new media excellent. The end result is less than priceless.

The music is as flat as it was on 78's or AM radio. As technology has evolved are tastes change. By the standards of fifty years ago the recordings are very good but we've come to expect more, "The Duke" is a disappointment. Most of my listening to music is done on a high end CD player in my car. The player brings out the "tinny-ness" of recording technology of the past. It's not pleasant listening and it soon will end up parked on a shelf and forgotten. The "good old days" really were not.

    Album Description

The long awaited solo album from founding member of Storyville and The Mavericks. "Perpetual Motion" is a stylistically diverse debut and a sizzling slab of unadulterated rock 'n' roll, delivered by a guitar slinger intent on showing the world what he can do on his own. Guest musicians include legendary Muscle Shoals sideman/songwriter Spooner Oldham, along with Mark Andes (Heart/Spirit), Tommy Thompson (Eric Johnson), Will Sexton, and Kacy Crowley.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-07-18

What a great record! After seeing david for years solo, with storyville and the Booze Weasels, I realize what makes him so good. He is perhaps the best rhythm guitar player in town. Sure he plays great lead, but so do alot of guys. But not many could play rhythm like him. His original material is great, mix in a healthy dose of songs by Bill Carter @ Ruth Elsworth, Mark Andes, Spooner Oldham, thats a recipe for a great record. Trust me, buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely killer!.......2007-07-03

David Grissom gets raves from guitarists for his work in Storyville and other bands, but this recording shows that David Holt should be equally credited for playing and songwriting chops. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A long time coming.......2004-12-28

I first learned about David Holt in the late 90's when he was playing with Storyville. His guitar work blew me away. I made an effort to go see Storyville as often as I could. I was heartbroken when they broke up and had been looking for a solo project from Holt for a very long time. I can definitely say that it was well worth the wait. Storyville fans had the chance to hear Holt sing solo on the Dog Years album on the track Lucky. But now we get a real taste of just what he can do. Don't wait, order this CD. Now I'm just waiting for the next one.
