5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-05-25

Mr. Greene is a true artist in an industry of cookie cutter sounds. He has a way of putting a wide variety of emotions into a few phrases. This album is amazing and moving. If you see him live, you fall in love with his songs, and his amazing, undenyable talent. A true joy to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing talent.......2005-04-04

Jackie Greene is undoubtedly the most exciting person in today's music. A young man of 24 years who is "mostly" self-taught, he can do it all and does it very very well. Yes, he can sound like Dyan and Morrison. No objection there for me. Those are fair, justified and honorable comparisons. But, he also sounds like the amazing Jackie Greene who can do it all: ballads, blues, rock, boogie-woogie and honky-tonk. He's young. He's fresh. He's a ball of talent that wants to "build his own house" and wow his his audience. He can and he does.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars PLUS!.......2004-10-07

Contrary to what one reviewer writes, the ballads *are* the best things that Mr. Greene has written (IMHO). This CD combines the best songwriting, guitar, keyboards, and harmonica of a young Dylan-V. Morrison-Jackson Browne-Marc Cohn (not to mention a great blues number comparable to Hendrix/Clapton/Allmans to end the album).

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly Amazing.......2004-07-13

All of his CD's that he makes are amazing!!! I would totally buy it if I didn't already have it. His music is so earthly and his deep, strong voice comes out of his man who doesn't look more than 15 yrs old. I love the music that he makes and I'll be a fan forever.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Talent.......2004-01-22

I saw Matthew West open for Jonny Lang last night in Boise Idaho. I had never heard of West before but he was awesome and he blew the audience away. West is where Lang used to be with the blues. I hope West doesn't lose that audience like Lang has. I bought this CD last night and have been playing it over and over - what an incredible talent! I am ordering his other CD and expect it to be as good as this one.

3 out of 5 stars a great split.......2004-08-14

this is a fun split cd by two cool bands.
aftertax is a basic indie-rock punk group along the line sof early superchunk and archers of loaf (y'know...that "college sound" haha). but they have some good jams and the song "big trap" will get stuck in your head for all time! they use some unique recording tricks and cool changes in their music to give it a quirky edge.
the rusty nails are more of a straight up punk rock and roll band...except for one small thing: they are led by a crazed bagpiper! haha-yes! how cool is that? they play some of their own great songs and mix it up with some traditional songs rocked up in their scottish punk style. they close the disc off with a fiery "when the saints go marching in."
a cool split cd by two bands that have broken up.
oh by the way...jack ball is the tom jones of this generation.

3 out of 5 stars Not as bad as everyone says.......2005-07-06

After reading the other reviews the album didn't sound to promising. I already owned No Miracle in Ruin so I knew the sound of this strange bag-pipe lattend punk band.

In my opinion This album is alright but not as good as No Miracle in Ruin, buy or listen to that album before purchasing this one.

2 out of 5 stars This review is for their other cd, Vestiges.......2004-07-15

Ok, i'll admit i felt slightly duped when i got all three of their cds brand new for $6. Truly it is unfair to compare them to Dropkick Murphys, Real McKenzies, or Flogging Molly. However, this isn't a terrible cd. It is like a cd by a band you would catch as an opening act for some big name punk act like Dropkick Murphys or The Mighty Mighty Bosstones or others. If you get a chance to pick up these cds for next to nothing, then go for it, they have a couple of decent songs per cd, which isn't bad for an up and coming band that could (god willing!!) actually be great (when they learn to play their instruments and write good songs). So don't discount them too fast, they have potential.

1 out of 5 stars i can't believe they were compared to dkm.......2004-06-22

i bought this cd on ebay because the person selling it said that it was a must for dropkick murphy fans! WRONG! dkm is so much better.. they know how to play and it sounds good. i dont even think that i made it through the cd one full time.. stick to dropkick murphys, flogging molly, and the real mckenzies if you want some real celtic punk rock!

    1 out of 5 stars Dropkick Murphy's they ain't.......2002-02-28

I figured, how bad could a bagpipe punk band, that is compared to the Dropkick Murphys, be? Well let me tell you, a lot worse than I thought. Almost all of the tracks on this disc are slow songs that sound exactaly the same, songs that might sound good at 3AM in the bar but don't play well on a CD. The music is so simple, it makes me wonder if these guys can even play the instruments. On the "fast" songs, the music is so jumbled, like they never practiced, just recorded it in one take and the lead singer, woah! Talk about trying to force a sound. It sounds like he is trying to make a certain sound that his vocal chords just can't produce. Lead singer should stick to the bagpipes, get a new singer and start pounding on the drums and pick up the pace. Neither punk nor irish drinking music, this band has no identity and if you want good music, stick to the murphys and Real McKenzies.

I know, It's only January, but this CD, and Hawkins for that matter deserve some attention. This CD is like LOTL on speed. The horn section is great and not overused. Ron's lyrical content will remind fan's of LOTL, but this CD stands on it's own as a fine accomplishment. I can't wait to see this guy on tour soon.

        Album Description

A rootsy, bluesy first album from Northern California singer/songwriter Jackie Greene. With his soulful voice and unworldly gift for words, 20 year old Jackie Greene has created an album of simple grace; rural and realistic, this album will delight listeners in search of meaningful music.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Rusty Nails.......2007-02-22

Jackie Greene is absolutely the Best! I came across his music this year 2007 and now own all four of his cd's and have downloaded them to my iPod. I am also trying to get some local places in Athens, GA (home of REM, B52s...and so many others)to book him. Sweet Somewhere Bound, Gone Wanderin and American Myth are all worth buying. I would class him as a Modern Blues/Rock.

5 out of 5 stars The Nail Might Be Rusty, But Jackie Isn't.......2003-03-18

Jackie Greene's talent as a singer/songwriter is already the stuff of legend here in the Sacramento area. He has the talent and the energy to go right to the top, and this album proves it in spades. From hard-driving blues numbers like "The Lord Mistreats Me" and funky honky-tonk like "Georgia" to intimate, lyrical songs like "Falling Back" and incisive, hard-edged observations of life like "Blue Sky," Jackie is both master musician and mature (beyond his 22 years) songwriter. There is not a single weak song on the album.

5 out of 5 stars The Jackie Greene Band.......2002-10-13

Jackie greene is easily one the best up in coming artists this century. His soul filled ballids remind me of better days, and loves lost. Jackie's awsome guitar solos rival any of todays top recording artist, not to mention his band who unmentionable talent reminds me of Steve Ray Van's dubble trubble, this CD is a must have for anyone who enjoys music played by true artists.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Your Lamp Trimmed And Burning.......2002-03-24

So in comes this kid, and he's drinkin' root beer, see, and he's got his daddy's guitar. He wears a funny hat and he won't tell you about his band. The room is empty when he takes the stage. Your buzz is wearing off, or maybe you never got one at all, and really, really you just want to go home, crawl into bed with your julip, and saw the proverbial logs. It is, afterall, late in the evening and folks just don't stay up for the open mics in this town.
"Alright everybody. This cat just moved to town, all the way from Placerville, and his name's Jackie Greene."
And he slings that guitar, an old Martin, and the high lonesome sound of his harmonica fills the room and he tells you about the Santa Fe Girl. And soon, if you're not careful, you'll forget that he's only 21, that he drinks root beer, that he wears that funny hat...indeed, you'll forget that you've never heard him play before, that you ever suspected he wasn't the real thing. And the songs will wrap themselves around you, and carry you off in to the weird and wild american nocturn. He's a great singer folks, all dylan comparisons are unavoidable and apt ("I know that record like the back of my hand" he'll say about any dylan side), and he writes songs that ring clear and true like an old resonator guitar. And in the inky shadows that crowd out the dim rays of the blue lamp, suddenly the room is full of friends. Yass, yass, this is the real thing, boys and girls, and any of you who own son volt, whiskeytown, or wilco records need to add this to your collection. Even if you don't understand what I'm tryin' say, understand this here and now: go buy this record. The root beer won't let you down.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2001-12-06

Placerville/Sacarmento local Jackie Greene has produced a fantastic album. A great variety showing all his talents. I've seen him live and he plays several different instruments. Harmonica, piano, organ, bottleneck.... the CD captures some excellent performances of his great songs.
