With so many acts crowding the funk-rap-metal combo that 311 has been working for the past decade, now is the time for the band to crack the mold and take the genre in a new direction. Unfortunately, on From Chaos, 311 doesn't break any new ground, instead hammering the same old riffs and beats into the ground. The band blends tepid reggae, repetitive rock, and breezy mainstream pop into a mix that tanks from a lack of interesting hooks. Even the lyrics swim in mediocrity. Nick Hexum and S.A. Martinez's vocal tone and songwriting ability ("Woah, amber is the color of your energy / Woah, shades of gold displayed naturally") both fall flat throughout the album. While other genre-crossing bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and No Doubt continually increase their mainstream following by working with new artists and developing their sound, the same does not seem to be true for 311. On From Chaos, the Nebraskan band just sound stuck in their own rut. --Jennifer Maerz

5 out of 5 stars 311 From Chaos Rocks.......2007-01-30

They hooked me with their melodic "Amber." That song in itself is worth buying the album. They really hit hard with their opening "You Get Worked." It's just a premonition of what's to come after. They mix it up a bit with "Champagne," "Amber," and "I'll Be Here Awhile," and the
rest the album does not disappoint. They show off their musical talent and precision playing in this installment. Check it out!

4 out of 5 stars One of their better CD's.......2006-12-16

I am a huge 311 fan. Heard of them way back with Music and Grassroots. I am not sure why a lot of people don't like this CD. This CD is back to old skool. It has a lot of the jams they used to do in Grassroots. Very hard core but it also has a track as like "Amber" and "I'll Be Here Awhile" that go along with their chill side. I have to admit while I AM a big fan of 311, I don't quite like their new stuff. While I appreciate they are growing as artists and I love the reggae and funk as much as the next guy, they've lacked the mix on their newer CD's. There needs to be a good balance of jam and chill but its been mostly alternative. Nonetheless, this CD is probably their last good jam CD so don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars From Chaos comes tight cd.......2006-08-08

In the '90s 311 became an underground success story with the releases of 'Music' and 'Grassroots', and later a commercial breakthrough with 'Blue' and 'Transistor' due to the popular chart-topping 'Down' and 'All mixed up' and the beloved 'Beautiful disaster'. Then in 2000, after complications arose with their Capricorn label, they switched over to Volcano.

'From Chaos' (their first Volcano release) was an awesome way to kick off a new decade and new millenia, armed with a new label and new recording studio, known as 'The hive'. 'From Chaos' showcased a much more focused and semi-creative side of 311 that stylistically is on-par with 'Grassroots' but with a perfect and solid recording and production. It doesn't hurt that the album contains the hits 'You wouldn't believe', 'I'll be here awhile' and the highly popular 'Amber' (arguably their most popular song). Just steer clear of 'You get worked' and 'Full ride' and you'll hear some of 311's finest lyrics. Listen to 'Amber' and 'Uncalm' and tell me that 311 aren't at the top of their game lyrically.

If you're a fan of 'Music', 'Grassroots' or 'Blue', then 'From Chaos' is a must listen.

4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2006-05-13

This is a good album, not my favorite from the band but very solid nonetheless. Not many tracks that I just don't really like (the only one that comes to mind is Uncalm), but not many tracks that are my all time favorites either. I do think Champaigne is a great song, and also like You Get Worked/Hostile Apostle/I Told Myeslf a lot, and the other songs on the album are pretty decent as well. It is definitely a varied album of styles, like most 311 albums.

4 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past.......2006-04-25

No, this isn't Music, or Grassroots, or s/t, but is that really such an issue with supposed 311 fans? I enjoy this record, as well as its predecessors. If any band remade their best album 6 times over, would that not get a bit monotonous? Well that's basically what I see here from others who have reviewed "From Chaos". They want Grassroots and s/t remade, well, if you want those albums get em' out and listen to em'. All great bands of the past have evolved within their style of music. The songwriting and the production value of a band must change over the years to keep themselves as well as their fans motivated to hear their new material. THAT'S THE IDEA OF "NEW MATERIAL" PEOPLE. It's not supposed to sound exactly like previous material they've released. Sre, I would agree with those who say Grassroots is the most well-executed album 311 has released, but I don't want or expect them to revert back to that style simply because it was their best. If you enjoy the unique mixture of genres 311 has managed to fuse together on their past albums, then you SHOULD like "From Chaos" if you give it a spin with an open mind. If you're expecting the early-to-mid 90s 311 then get those 3 or 4 records and listen to them all on repeat. If you want a heavier version of what 311 was in those days, then "From Chaos" will be a satisfactory album for you. Highlights are as such:The heavier punk/rap fusion star here would have to be "Sick Tight", and the laid back reggae/acoustic rock fusion star in my opinion (many people loved Amber, and it is a good song) is "I'll Be Here A While".

5 out of 5 stars Stout Irish Music!.......2004-07-21

I was introduced to Amadan by accident when they happened to be playing at the bar I chose for my 21st birthday bash. I fell in love with the music instantly and, several months later, I managed to purchase this CD. It spent a solid month in my CD player and somehow manages to get wedged in it every so often these days.

Like Celtic music? Like punk? Like rock? Heck, you don't even have to like any of these genres to love Amadan. They're one of those rare bands where it doesn't matter what your taste is, you can't help loving them. This CD is an excellent blend of traditional and original (that manages to sound traditional, but punkified) music that will always put a smile on your face.

Buy this CD andraise a pint to this fabulous band and their first CD!

5 out of 5 stars their new album is even better.......2004-04-30

Their new album, Hell Bent 4 Victory, is even better and badder than this one. Their skill at playing and arranging has come a long way from SOL to HB4V. The same raw energy, andrelin, pub party wildness, only more focussed at a bit faster pace. For for working, working out, partying, marching to war, and sowing wild oats. I prefer these guys to Andrew W.K. by a long shot. The Pogues had a baby and it's called Amadan.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2004-03-23

The CD is excellent. Everyone I invite to listen to it falls in love with it. I have seen these guys live at Kells and they blow us away every time. If you like music, you must own this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Irish at its best.......2004-03-01

Amadan is an incredible blend of traditional irish music, with a more modern, punk sound. Their first albumn, Sons of Liberty, is fantastic from beginning to end, each song better than the next. It comes with my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars I've listened to this CD ~20 times in the last four days.......2004-01-24

This is how Irish rock/punk music was meant to be made. We just had to wait a while for it to come out. This is the best CD ever. It doesn't even matter what you listen to to enjoy it. I used to be a fluent rap fan until I heard this and now I'm a fluent Amadan fan. This band is seriously good enough to make it to the next Woodstock or something like that. I have burned copy but I like it so much that I'm gonna buy the album. I highly recommend recommending this to other people too. My brothers girlfriend knows one of the members and that's how I found out, so I'm telling you. Buy this. Now. Now. Are you clicking buy...? If yes then gooood, if no, then do it. Seriously. Insanely awsome stout Irish music!!

        3 out of 5 stars Punk?.......2003-02-17

I must say i genuinley enjoyed this collection of classic nuggets of forgotten musical history. However I also must state for the record I think that coining this set as "punk" was a bit off. Some of this music just didnt fit under the title of punk. I mean this does have its moments, but at times it doesnt flow too well. The track listing seems sporadic and not thought out. They chose some weak material to represent some bands. For example i do not think "pet Sematary" was a good representation of most of the ramones work. To me this collection often falls more under new wave then under punk. I suggest passing on this collection unless you can get it for under 30 bucks.

Total Chaos definitely should have stuck to playing hardcore. Pledge of Defiance was one of the best CD's ever! This album has a few keepers(Boot Party, Riot City 2, Baby I Hate you, 12 Ounce Pounders)but lacks really thought out lyrics. Overall, an OK album.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Mix of British influenced Oi! and 80's American Punk.......1999-02-19

Definitly an awesome CD. Don't be fooled by the cover! THey're not as HardCore as they may look, but this album shreds like a blender on liquefy!! Johnny's scratchy vocals are pleasing to the ears, Shawn smash has a grinding solo in about every song, and their chick drummer is nothing less than impressive. The only weak point is Joe Bastard's bass, he really sucks! "Johnny" sounds like a Ramones song (Kick @$$), "Voice of the streets" is a good song to listen to if you've just been dumped by a girl, "Boot Party" has loud yelling Oi!, And you heard the kick @$$ song "Riot City" on Punk -o- Rama 1, and on their debut album, pledge of defience, they do a new version of it that is pretty good. All my friends that have listened to it agree that it is one of the best records they've ever heard. Drop everything, go down to your local recordshop and demand this CD it is a must have!!! Oi!

4 out of 5 stars Pure Punk Rock.......1998-10-01

this is straight ahead punk rock. total chaos is for the true punks, not the posers who like the mohawks and spikes on their belts. Great OI!, and traditional punk songs make this a good album. I would give it 5 stars, but the songs tend to sound a little repetive after a while. If you like the SEx PiStOLs, Swindle, or old Rancid, you'll definately like total chAos!

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was the odd duck of Danish music. He remained doggedly Romantic at a time when Romanticism was out, and he had his own funny little experiments with music that noboby particularly liked. We owe a debt to Chandos and Danacord for keeping Langgaard's music current. Music of the Spheres (1916-18) predates Gyorgy Ligeti by 50 years with its bright, pointillistic assertions and groups of ideas that evolve to their own inner logic. As demonstrated in Tonebilleder (Four Tone Pictures), Langgaard's music has an openness that allows his tone clusters to expand, contract, or simply repeat (as Ligeti would do much later). 5 out of 5 stars A work of awesome proportions and intimate emotion.......2006-12-11

This Chandos disc containing two pieces by Danish composer Rued Langgaard is one of the most pleasant surprises this fan of modern-classical music has come across. Langgaard (1893-1952) was an outsider and eccentric in Danish music life, a virtuoso organist who succeeded only in his late forties at getting a position, and a composer of wild tales of the Antichrist coming into the world who found it almost impossible to get his music played. In the late 1960s, his music was rediscovered by scholars and his importance in Danish musical history is now certain, but he is still little-known in the modern-classical scene. We should be grateful to the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra & Choir and Gennady Rozhdestvensky for their performance and to Chandos for releasing the recording.

"Music of the Spheres" for soprano, chorus, orchestra, and distant orchestra (1916-1918) is stunning. The innovations here are considerable: exploiting the performance space in the use of two orchestras, writing for an "open" piano where glissandi are produced directly on the strings, and of course the clusters and polyphonic webs, massive and seemingly motionless blocks of sound reminiscent of Gyorgy Ligeti. Indeed, the Hungarian composer exclaimed that he was a Langaard imitator when Per Norgard showed him a copy of the score in 1968. But the purity of the string writing reminds me of Alexander Knaifel, and the massive proportions of the orchestral writing at its loudest is somewhat like Sandstroem's "The High Mass".

But, as is often said, it wouldn't matter how much Langgaard were ahead of his time in "Music of the Spheres" if the music wasn't great. And it is, one of the most moving half-hours of orchestral music I'm acquainted with. Langgaard was a Romantic in a time when Romanticism was out of fashion, and the proportions of what the listener may recognize as struggle, momentary defeat, and victory are just as powerful as in Mahler.

"Music of the Spheres" is an exceptional piece in Langgaard's total output. The "Four Tone Pictures" for soprano and orchestra are somewhat more typical of his art. Written on poems by J. Blicher-Clausen, Ivan Turgeniev, and Holger Drachmann, they are fairly tame lieder. These suggest that the modern-classical fan can pass on most of Langgaard's music, but "Music of the Spheres" is so good that at least this disc should be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most extraordinary works ever written.......2003-11-21

Music of the Spheres, by the eccentric Danish composer Rued Langgaard, really is the work that has everything. Written between 1916 and 1918, it uses a multitude of techniques that would not be rediscovered until after the wars. Multifarious tone clusters, floating micropolyphony, a piano played directly on the strings, an entire offstage orchestra, blurred choral singing, prefigurations of minimalism: you name it, this work has it. Yet it also has Scriabinesque ecstasy, Straussian opulence and a wacked-out religious subtext in which Christ and Antichrist clash in the violent climax to the whole work.

None of this would matter, though, if the music weren't any good. But it is good--probably the best thing Langgaard ever wrote (so far I've heard about 30 of his works, and none of them matches this one). The various short episodes flow one into another with perfect clarity and logic, the orchestration is superlative, and the dramatic writing at the climax is sonically overwhelming. Fortunately, Chandos match this work with a tremendous performance by the Danish National Radio Symphony and Choir, conducted by that indefatigable servant of underperformed music, Gennady Rozhdestvensky. This recording should be considered the best currently available, and it outstrips the rivals with ease.

Any other work isn't likely to fare so well in comparison to this, but the Four Tone Pictures are by no means eclipsed. Opulent songs in a Straussian harmonic language--though lacking the German composer's gift for melody--they are the perfect way to come down from the musical high of Music of the Spheres.

5 out of 5 stars Music to Amaze Your Ears.......2003-07-23

Rued Langgaard was the man that time forgot. Completely neglected in his native Denmark because he did not fall within the prevailing neo-classic aesthetic set by Nielsen, Langgaard was rediscovered in the 60s when Per Norgard gave a score of Music of the Spheres to Gyorg Ligeti at a competition and after a minute Ligeti announced, "it seems as though I am a Langgaard imitator." Though Langgaard was essentially a conservative late romantic composer, he was capable of some real moments of innovation. He not only presaged Ligeti's color style, but also elements of minimalism, most especially in his string quartets.

Music of the Spheres is Langgaard at his most original. This work is a stunning series of small tone pictures. From the very beginning of the work, with the shimmering cluster of string harmonies over ominous timpani, through out the work, experiment reigns. Langgaard is always tonal, but in this work shows a fascination with orchestral sound and tonal clusters that was probably about 50 years ahead of the times. And yet, in the middle of the work there are sections that could come directly from Schonberg's early Gurrelieder or even the symphonies of Gade. It is a truly astonishing aural sound feast and should be a staple of the repertoire.

The accompanying Tone Pictures, four tone poems on nature themes, are also quite beautiful, though much more conventional as music. Here is Langgaard the Romantic and he is quite a good Romantic actually. The orchestrations are lush, the harmony sensuous and there is just enough oddness to mark the work as Langgaard's and no one else's.

This Chandos disc is exemplary in sound and the performance by Rozhdestvensky is definitive I think. Even if you are afraid of unusual or experimental work, this is a disc that you can take to your heart. It is stunning and beautiful and has my highest recommendation.
