5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT DEBUT ALBUM!.......2007-05-06

This is my first experience with the band Ensiferum, although I'm already a huge fan of the band Wintersun. What can I say? This is one great debut album! Here's why:

The CD starts off with "Intro". From my experiences with many other metal bands, the intro is there just to set the mood and seldomly is able to hold its own as a stand-alone piece. This "Intro" however, is so pleasing on the ears that I just had to include it in my music library.

It gets better from there with what I consider to be the best song on the album, "Token of Time". Excellent riffs and solos.

Other highlights are, "Abandoned", "Old Man", "Windrider", "Eternal Wait" and "Treacherous gods".

"Battle Song" is just as good as any of the many stellar battle metal songs put out by the band TURISAS (another great band, btw).

If Viking Metal is your wheel of cheese, then you got to get this CD--it's very rarely that I've seen so many good songs on one album!

4 out of 5 stars epic .......2006-12-28

This album is amazing in every sense. I cant think of a single song i dont like on this album. The only reason i give it 4 stars is because it still seems like its lacking something. I think they perfected theyre sound on Iron which is my favorite album from them.

5 out of 5 stars Viking metal is meant to be fun!.......2006-08-02

Ensiferum's debut is a gem among the viking metal genre. Another wonderful band has been unleashed from the Scandinavian country of Finland. Jari Mäenpää uses inspiring vocals and masterful shredding ability on lead guitar to create a fun mix of folk music with melodic death metal. Mäenpää and his bandmates really do think they are vikings, as evident in the album booklet. These metalheads pose with swords, robes, and viking war paint. The music is of the highest quality.

The track, 'Hero in a Dream' is a fierce opener (after the intro) with wonderful melodic riffs. Jari's vocals might remind the listener of Alexi Lahio. 'Token of Time' is probably the shortest song present, but this is one of my favorites. 'Little Dreamer' (Väinämöinen part II) is breathtaking and has a great folk breakdown with clean vocals. 'Treacherous Gods' is another great song that is folkish and complex. The album closes with a fun song, 'Goblin's Dance' that is complete with flutes and a very addicting chorus.

Ensiferum's first full length album is one that will stand the test of time. Viking metal is on the rise today and Ensiferum have established themselves in the genre. I know many people who do not even like screaming vocals in metal, but love this band. Unfortunately, Ensiferum parted ways with Jari Mäenpää shortly after the recording of their second full length, 'Iron.' Mäenpää has since started his own project, Wintersun. Norther vocalist Petri Lindroos is now the current singer. Fans of viking/folk/melodic death should definately purchase this album. This is a perfect example of how metal is very fun. \M/

5 out of 5 stars Epic. .......2006-07-29

I am quite honestly at a loss of words to describe this CD. Ummm... very rooted in Scandinavian folk music... but also very loud and amplified. There's kind of a gloomy vibe that I get from this, but it's also satisfactory in some kind of perverse way. "Eternal Wait" is by far the best song on here; in fact, it's the reason why I listened to the whole CD in the first place. That said, it's totally possible to listen to the whole thing without skipping tracks if one can resist the urge to hear "Eternal Wait," which appears towards the end of the CD.

If you're looking for some kind of really "extreme" metal, look somewhere else. Same goes for those who are looking for a nice collection of folk songs from the north country. But if you want an exciting and invigorating synthesis of the two, look no further.

Good luck finding this in stores if you live in the States. If you actually DO, buy it. It's mighty rare.

5 out of 5 stars What Metal should sound like.......2006-05-31

Ok, i just recently got turned on to this band, but I am already deeply, deeply in musical love with this band. The Thunderous rhythem of the combined with powerful, "chant-like" choruses make the hair on my neck tingle with excitment. This is a wierd sub-genre called "viking metal" or "folk metal" and rightfully so. The style of music paints pictures of hordes of vikings seiging forward over the land. This is just perfect music for anyone with even remote intrest in warfare or medieval themed things.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to Charge into Battle!.......2007-02-19

Shortly after the release of Ensiferum's Iron in 2004, Vocalist and Guitarist Jari Mäenpää announced that he planned to leave the band to pursue his own side project, Wintersun. Personally, I was very sad to hear this news, as Jari's vocals are supreme for this genre and his songwriting skills have greatly led this Viking/Folk Metal band among the elite of the Finnish metal bands represented by Spinefarm Records. Jari does leave fans with a remarkable performance and the band introduces the lovely Meiju Enho on keyboards.

The album opens with a emotional acoustic instrumental piece titled Ferrum Aeternum. This transitions right into the electric title track, Iron. The song, Into Battle is by far one of the most epic tracks ever recorded in the `Heroic Folk Metal' genre. The solos by Jari and Markus Toivonin are intense. Lai Lai Lai is a very fun folk song that is in Finnish and English. The album closes with a soft ballad called Tears, courtesy of Kaisa Saari's vocals.

Even though Jari decided to leave the band, Ensiferum is still in very good hands. Their abilities are not in doubt, especially after viewing Ensiferum's live DVD `10th Anniversary Live' with Petri Lindoos on vocals. Jari's amazing growls, supported by Toivonin and Miettinen's clean vocals make for a very pleasurable balance by the band. Meiju's keyboard's add a very epic flare to the music and she is a great addition to this wonderful band. Ensiferum are worthy of much praise for their accomplishments in the genre and Iron was a worthy `Metal Album of the Year' contender for 2004.

5 out of 5 stars I'd say this is about as perfect as you can get!.......2006-11-06

Its funny how they are known and call themselves Viking metal. Though I don't really know why. They are alot of finnish folk music incorporated, and they talk alot about battle and such, but musicaly is just an increadable Melodic Death metal album. "Iron" The title track is a great catchy Metal song, The song (Which I have never heard done before) incorporates old western style movie sound track into the song. Great! Well anyway, every metal fan should love this album...Power metal people will like the solos and quality of the music, and the death metal people will like the harsh gritty vocals and ferocious vibe.

5 out of 5 stars Only As I Look Upon The Raging Battle..........2006-04-23

One of the best Viking Death Metal albums was Ensiferum's debut. With more than outstanding sound, composure, and musicianship on this release, there is no doubt to claim "Iron" as an even greater art.

"Ferrum Aeternum" is an opening instrumental that sounds somewhat Medieval with keyboards, flutes, and everything...good start. The title track, though, really shows how Ensiferum sounds. Keyboards reign with mostly rough vocals by the Demi-God Jari, but also some clean ones and some choirs; very melodic and with refreshingly powerful energy.
After the short instrumental "Mourning Heart-Interlude", we get some sort of half ballad with "Tale Of Revenge". Very moody and melodic, but also with some harsh vocals that go hand in hand with Jari's excellent clean voice. "Lai Lai Hei", which starts out acoustically, continues the slow melody with some electric guitars. The vocals come in Finnish and English, and then they shift up a powerful gear, still with clean vocals and also the choir (energetic, dynamic, epic, distinct chorus), which probably makes this the best track on Iron.

Another stellar release by the Finnish five piece (with the addition of the keyboardist). The freshness and sheer power has been reduced a bit, but the Folk elements stay intact, maybe for an almost logical consequence. Ensiferum still retain their sound without ditching their heritage, which is good news. Considering this was Jari's last album with Ensiferum, we should realize the heart he put into this before leaving. His battles with Ensiferum will never be forgotten.

    5 out of 5 stars Colossal Album.......2005-12-22

This album is seriously an alluring beautiful work, so much so that I was tempted in acquiring the only two copies my local music store had. As weird as this act might seem, I felt as though I had hit the proverbial jackpot with a little blind stab in the dark with this one. Heck how many times do you come across great things by pure coincidence? Not a lot! but I can personally say I've been blessed with a few (Venom's 3CD Box Set - only 1000 were made! - and Agathodaimon`s early works) But with that aside, this album is a memorable piece of work that will never cease to satisfy me. It's cleverly balanced in tempo and atmosphere to the point of making one lust for more.

Upon picking up in rhythm it also delivers a robust punch in both, harmonics and vocals. The icing on the cake however is the last track (in my case and being a digipack) is a Metallica cover of Battery. Very impressive!

Try checking out their official site, for further info on the band and whatnot.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as their previous work.......2006-10-10

First of I should say that Ensiferum's "Iron" and their self-titled album are among the best albums in my record collection. After hearing that their lead vocalist and guitarist Jari had left to start his own band (Wintersun, which you should check out; stunning work!), I was really upset. Hearing their first EP after losing Jari, I notice that he was more than just a vocalist to the band. Their new vocalist isnt bad, in fact he is pretty good, its just that the band seems to have lost some of its edge. Although to be frank it would be unfair to be so harsh since only the first two tracks are new material (the rest are either previously unreleased tracks or covers).
So I would recommend this EP to any fan of Ensiferum, or folk metal in gerenal, but dont expect it to be anything stellar like their previous releases.

5 out of 5 stars Ensiferum mini album very enjoyable.......2006-04-14

Finnish sensation viking metal band Ensiferum have returned with their mini album 'Dragonheads.' Gone are the vocals and masterful guitar work of Jari Maenpaa. In steps current Norther vocalist and guitarist Petri Lindroos. Ensiferum are a fairly new band from Finland with two full length albums to their catalogue. Jari left shortly after the recording of Ensiferum's second album, 'Iron,' to pursue his own metal project, Wintersun. The band now appeases fans with a mini-dose of what their third full length album will be like.

The mini album starts with a slow but epic title song. The listener can realize that this new meterial sounds like Ensiferum from the start, but the overall sound is slower than what we fans are used to hearing. The viking elements are represented strongly here, and the screams of Lindroos are very good, but Jari was supreme. The song, 'Kalevala Melody' is a instrumental interlude that is very pleasing and relaxing for the listener. The fourth track, 'White Storm' is my favorite song on here. The synth provided by Meiju Enho is very impressive and gives the song folky elements. The Finnish Medley that closes the album is very classical sounding and clean vocals are present throughout the entire medley.

When the dust settles upon the ears of the listener, this mini album is very pleasing. One area of concern is that the material is not as fast as Ensiferum's older material. But since Jari is gone and Lindroos seems to be here to stay, I can get over the fact that Ensiferum probably won't have the lightning fast solos and aggressive riffs that were present in the past. This is a quality disc and I highly recommend fans of viking/melodic/folk metal to embrace Ensiferum. Their first two albums are amazing viking metal releases. Much praise to Ensiferum for making highly enjoyable music.

Incase anyone was wondering, this is the first full length release from Ensiferum that doesnt feature the creative genius/guitar god known as Jari. The new guy Petri, is from Norther, you know, the Children of Bodom cover band. While he does an average job of handling the vocals and guitar, Ensiferum is not (or were not) an average band. Not only that, but Jaris absence is clearer then day. The music doesnt use folk as well as Jari did, nor are there the freshness and uniqueness that made Ensiferum fun to listen to.

Oh well, Wintersun is by far a more godly outfit. Check them out instead.

4 out of 5 stars another solid release from ensiferum.......2007-04-30

Victory songs is the first effort without one of the original members jari. Who was one of the lead guitarist and was the lead vocalist. Replacing him is peter lindross the lead vocalist and guitarist of norther. The big question is what the impact of jaris departure would do to the sound of ensiferum. Im happy to say not much has changed. While their self titled debut is still my favorite victory songs is very good but short of a masterpiece. While still of the most uniuqe bands in metal blending their folk elements with melodic death metal, sometimes bordering on black metal. Which they do very well. Some of the experimentation which i found so great on their first two releases is gone. Victory Songs is my favorite at over ten minutes long it is one of the more experimental tracks. Great riffs, vocals, and a great chorus with the great pure folkish sounding vocals i like so much about their sound assure that it remains captivating throughout. Deathbringer from the sky is another example of metallic greatness as is raised by the sword. The other songs while not bad i feel are not as good. The main complaint i have about Victory Songs is lack of experimentation which i always found and exciting and great part of their sound. For fans of ensiferum this another great release by one of the most dependable bands in metal at this point for others i would start with their self titled debut.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Viking Metal Masterpiece.......2007-04-27

I picked this up here locally and am purely amazed at how good it is, for any fans of the older stuff this will not disappoint. I thought the absence of the original singer/guitar player Jari would weaken this band but no, they have only grown stronger! Now with Jari fronting his new band "Wintersun" it allows Ensiferum to really spread their own wings and fly. The last release was only an EP and while it was good it is nowhere a masterpiece but this album is great! It is up there with the other earlier releases. The guitars are fast and furious as fans have come to expect and the vocals are nothing short of spot on phenomenal! This album starts with a nice mellow piece (song 1) that builds into song two with thundering drums and guitar and the rest of the album is a pure viking metal onslaught.

Fans of Ensiferum rejoice as this is a masterpiece!
