Just before all commercial hell broke loose for Chris Isaak, he made another record drenched in reverb, salty tears (he'll have you believe his heart is forever being broken), and the scent of lust. Ignoring the wave of pop and punk-inspired rock that was gaining notice in the late '80s, Isaak continued in his adoration for artists like Roy Orbison and Elvis (uh, Presley), and wailed on "Cryin'," "Lie to Me," and "You Owe Me Some Kind of Love." Isaak's bad-boy tease is irresistible on "Lover's Game," and he exudes a hopeful, endearing optimism on "This Love Will Last." His classic "Blue Hotel" steals the show (he should have earned his fame on this track instead of "Wicked Game"), and his cover of "Heart Full of Soul" (originally done by the Yardbirds) is faithful and passionate. --Lorry Fleming

Good compilation, but get the DVD/CD version!.......2007-06-01
What is interesting is that, even as he has matured as an artist, the roots to his music are still directly traceable to Sun Records. The obsessive Elvis Presley singles "Driving" and "Blue Hotel" to the more subtle "Let Me Down Easy," Isaak has remained stunningly consistent. The songs are always sly and sexy, even with the occasional foray into different vocal styles (the hot growl on "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" from "Forever Blue").
The CD is missing a few songs ("Don't Make Me Dream About You," "Solitary Man," "Cryin'" and "Go Walking Down There"), but if you get the DVD version (Best of Chris Isaak (CD + DVD)) there are six songs that aren't on the CD. The DVD is a treat for another great reason. Skip watching the music videos; make sure to watch with Isaak's commentary. For those familiar with his (inexplicably not yet of DVD) Shotime series or his live shows, Isaak's got a very dry and quirky sense of humor. His belly-laugh-a-minute comments make the extra expenditure worth it.
But even more interesting is watching a young Chris Isaak looking like a pompadoured Rockabilly star on "Blue Hotel" and "Dancin'." It's easy to see how he became a movie-star in training ("The Silence of the Lambs (Widescreen Special Edition)," "Little Buddha" and "A Dirty Shame (NC-17 Rated Theatrical Version)"), but also just as interesting to see the stars who guested in his videos, including the late Chris Penn. But really, make sure you listen to this for the commentary. It's a blast.

With his singular retro-rock vision, Chris Isaak had already graduated from cult figure to music-video heartthrob when he delivered this 1995 album. But if all the surface elements are intact, he has assimilated his chief vocal influences, Orbison and Elvis, even further, and Isaak's songs dig even deeper into his favorite subject, heartbreak, to shorten the distance between writer and singer. "Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing," the set's opener, employs the same growling rock-speak as George Thorogood's notorious "Bad to the Bone," but without a trace of irony--Isaak lashes the listener with the torment of a betrayed lover, telegraphing fear, desire, and anguish as he wheels from rumbling accusations to keening falsetto cries. Elsewhere, he withdraws to the more lyrical croon of his previous work, his band wreathed with the throbbing tremolo and ghostly reverb that are their natural elements. There's a folk-rock jangle to the lovely, forlorn "Somebody's Crying," a disarming directness to the simple but aching title song, and another burst of fevered agony, "Go Walking Down There,"which gallops over a perfect mid-'60s guitar arrangement. For all its letter-perfect allusiveness, though, Forever Blue feels authentically heartbroken, not just cleverly crafted. --Sam SutherlandCustomer Reviews:

A rock masterpiece.......2006-09-19
Chris' voice makes me weak in the knees!!!!.......2006-04-26
Somebody's Crying is on my list of the greatest songs ever because it makes me sad and makes me want to dance at the same time. If Chris sang "please return the love you took from me" to me, I wouldn't be able to resist. There She Goes is another favorite. It makes you ache inside to hear the feeling in his voice as he's watching the girl he can no longer have walking along with someone else.
Every song on this album is well-written and incredibly infectious. I, like so many others who have reviewed this album, can listen to it all the way through without having to skip a dud song. This is Chris Isaak's very best album and no self-respecting music lover should be without it. Did I mention that I like Chris Isaak? A lot?
So Very Good.......2006-02-12
Great stuff, year after year. This album is a particularly good one from a really fine artist. What more can I say? Thank you Chris Isaak! You've added an irreplaceable dimension to many many hours.
Forever Blue=Forever Great!.......2006-02-11
This work is awesome. This was the first Chris Isaak CD I ever bought and it remains the best (although I like his other work, too).
There are rocking numbers (Goin' Nowhere), soulful reflections (Things Go Wrong), heartbreakers (Forever Blue) and happy little tunes (I Believe). There is something for everyone. Isaak's range (both in voice and in selection) is varied, but always pleasant.
This is a beautiful work anyway you choose to think about it.

Chris Isaak managed to turn his videogenic visage and brooding masculinity to his advantage in a big way, becoming a sort of MTV-era cross between James Dean and Elvis. Heady stuff, but don't hate him because he's beautiful. In fact, Isaak had been plying his trademark latter-day rockabilly sound for some years before the inclusion of "Wicked Game" in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart jolted sales of Heart Shaped World. (But the stylish Herb Ritts video certainly didn't hurt, either.) Still, the album is a moody gem, featuring the pensive title track, the smoldering "Blue Spanish Sky," and, of course, "Wicked Game." If you still doubt Isaak's good intentions, though, check out the album's rockin' finale, a fine version of Bo Diddley's "Diddley Daddy." --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

Very good music with a vibe. .......2007-03-24
There is much that is quite good and in the best tradition of the music that would be in a direct line to those who initially mixed their country influences with rock and roll, in the best possible way.
Instrumentally this album shows how you accompany a vocal well, convey a good vibe. The arrangments for this type of music are perfectly done. While a produced album, it has a working unit live feel to do this. It's more than well produced, it's excellently produced. No technical wizardry that would intrude on the pieces.
There is romance, wistfulness and a hint of the the mythical rock & roll imagery. The mixing of influences country/pop/rockabilly/smooth jazz is seamless.

Chris Isaak's Baja Sessions was inspired by a surfing trip the singer took with his band to the Baja California section of Mexico. As the salt in their hair dried in the sun, the four musicians sat around with acoustic guitars and a small drum set, and played some tunes from Isaak's previous albums, some of his unrecorded originals, and some of his favorite old songs by the likes of Roy Orbison, Gene Autry, and Arthur Lyman. The quartet so enjoyed the laid-back, mostly acoustic, Spanish-tinged flavor of these vacation jams that when they got home to the Bay Area, they recreated them in the studio. Baja Sessions is like an Unplugged album, except the sun-drenched, south-of-the-border mood gives these remakes a far fresher twist than most such projects. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:
My favorite Isaak album..........2007-06-13
But, this is an album review, not an Isaak retrospective. My problem with most Chris Isaak albums is not the individual tracks, but the lack of cohesion in the overall album. I'm not one to criticize an artist for taking risks, but most of his albums have a tendency to skip around sometimes, and thats not to say I dont love 'em anyway. But, an album like Baja Sessions is, from start to finish, a south-western, chilled, beachy, Corona-fueled timepiece that sticks to its sandy roots. This is the soundtrack to your tiki-torched backyard barbeque.

So Much to Like.......2006-10-10
It came the other day, and I have listened many times and am so pleased. I particularly like the south-of-the-border sound, the guitars, and drums with pleasant instrumental breaks. His voice is soft and soothing, and he is very good at the Roy-Orbison sound, which adds another fascinating dimension.
I like all of the songs, too, which is not always possible on some albums. "Only the Lonely", "South of the Border", "I Wonder", "Yellow Bird", "Return to Me", "Sweet Leilani", and well, I should be naming all of them, because they are all so enjoyable.
This may well be one of my favorite enduring albums.

Chris Isaak's first album in four years, "San Francisco Days," marks no great departures from his previous three. Recorded once again with his same Silvertone band and producer Erik Jacobsen, this is another Isaak collection of brooding songs about unslaked lust and half-completed break-ups; his restrained but lush voice is still out in front of the heavily echoed popabilly guitars. Nonetheless there are subtle differences in this project that make it more varied, more open, more aggressive and better overall than its predecessors. For example, "Lonely with a Broken Heart" sounds like the ultimate Isaak title, but the song is delivered at a brisk swing tempo, pushed by the soulful B-3 organ of the Robert Cray Band's Jimmy Pugh, and Isaak's carefree vocal makes it clear that the song is meant as a sarcastic taunt to a lover who expects him to come crawling back. A similar twist informs "Except the New Girl," which is lit up by lovely steel guitar lines from Tom Brumley (ex-Buck Owens); Isaak confesses to a woman that "there's never been anyone else...," but then adds the kicker, "except the new girl." "Round & Round" features some dirty guitar and a chugging beat, while the album closes with the best song Neil Diamond ever wrote, "Solitary Man," which sounds more lonely and desperate in this minimalist arrangement than it ever did before. Isaak's trump card, as always, is his singing. Like his heroes Roy Orbison and Don Everly, Isaak sings as if it were always 3 a.m., when every other gambit has failed and there are no options left but complete honesty. He pulls so tightly on the reins to his voice that he usually sings in a husky whisper, which is no less lush for being held back. And when he loosens the reins and allows his handsome tenor to rise in power, as it does on the incandescent falsetto chorus to the first single, "Can't Do a Thing (To Stop Me)," the effect is thrilling. --Jeffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

The candyking of earsmoothies.......2006-08-24
has a touch of "woodoo hoodoo" feel over it`s, but it` spinns into not too clever directions as a whole, but certainly moody enough. Track 4 Two hearts is a heartful song With enough passion to bring you down, down on youre knee begging for more. The etnic latino touch helps a lot. Track 5 Can`t do a thing( To stop me) is more average at Isaak standard, but the feel, the grove, oh yees. Everything is solid craftmanship. Track 6 Except The new girl is more like an uptempo "country rocker" that shines
on every "blue note". Track 7 Waiting is a minor let down. More slow and sometimes gives you a more insignificant feel over the whole musical experience. Track 8 Move along brings you deep, deep down, and yeees you can feeel it. Eargaasm !. Track 9 I wan`t your love is an uptempo rock&roller that knows it roots,. It has the right touch of "rockabilly feel" and greatness certainly shines on this one. Track 105:15 is way deep down with a "blue Cold "atmosphere sparkles all over. Track 11 Lonley with a broken heart, is a rock and roller with the right creative touches on the right places. Track 11 Solitary man is a simple and ok song,. Quite god. Anyway Chris Isaak is the Candyking for earsmoothies so full of passion, so full of soul.

As the star of his own Showtime TV show, Chris Isaak plays a sly raconteur with perfect comic timing, but on his eighth album, he shows that he is still intent on continuing in the role of melancholy balladeer. With his movie-star good looks, affable personality, and string of celebrity girlfriends, it's increasingly hard to see him in as the perpetual loser in love, despite the convincing likes of "Cool Love" (Love is a flame / I just got burned again") or the mournful "Nothing to Say" ("Nothing to say now / Nothing to do / I feel my heart breaking and it's all because of you"). The real mystery is why his doctor hasn't given him a prescription for Paxil. Isaak momentarily breaks out of his funk with the adventurous and witty "Notice the Ring," which pays cheeky homage to the Contours' "First I Look at the Purse," and the beat-heavy, Beck-like "Always Got Tonight." But Isaak largely seems content to live in the past, strumming the same vintage guitar licks and singing the same sad, sad songs. --Jaan UhelszkiAlbum Description

i think the switch from longtime producer, erik jacobsen, to new producer john shanks was a brilliant move and i told that to mr. isaak, himself, in person after one of his shows. now i've seen some "complaints" that this album is more accessible, poppier and has more hooks than ever before but i don't consider that a bad thing. i am *all about a good hook*, so what he accomplished on this album suited me fine. like i said, i feel it's his best yet. i'd like to see him work with john shanks again or even another producer, like rick rubin.
for a chris isaak album, i give it 5 stars. if i didn't grade on an "isaak curve", i would still give it 4 or 4.5 stars.

Chris Isaak rocks? Indeed. Granted, the crooner's latest is no noisy, post-grunge Nirvana (though the chord progression of the opener, "Please," recalls Kurt Cobain's "Heart-Shaped Box"), but Devil does find Isaak loosening up. His gut-busting vocals on the free-for-all title track are as near to reckless as we're ever going to hear him. He's also toughening up, growling around his lower register in the death-inflected "Black Flowers." The backing band Silvertone kicks up its heels as well, most infectiously on the gleefully two-steppin' "I'm Not Sleepy." Of course, Isaak's signature shivery, quivering, and wistful ballads remain. And the singer still has a winning way with an unshakable melody. Armed with guitarist Hershel Yatovitz's poignant picking, only Isaak could turn a tired platitude like "Don't Get So Down on Yourself" into a true tearjerker. --Sue VanHeckeCustomer Reviews:
