Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Just before all commercial hell broke loose for Chris Isaak, he made another record drenched in reverb, salty tears (he'll have you believe his heart is forever being broken), and the scent of lust. Ignoring the wave of pop and punk-inspired rock that was gaining notice in the late '80s, Isaak continued in his adoration for artists like Roy Orbison and Elvis (uh, Presley), and wailed on "Cryin'," "Lie to Me," and "You Owe Me Some Kind of Love." Isaak's bad-boy tease is irresistible on "Lover's Game," and he exudes a hopeful, endearing optimism on "This Love Will Last." His classic "Blue Hotel" steals the show (he should have earned his fame on this track instead of "Wicked Game"), and his cover of "Heart Full of Soul" (originally done by the Yardbirds) is faithful and passionate. --Lorry Fleming

I have loved CI's music for many years. He is handsome sings wonderful and has a cool personality. I have all his cd's and this one is a must to have.He is working his tail off with many concerts this year. Go see him if you haven't yet. You will fall in love too as all his fans have!

5 out of 5 stars WAITING FOR CHRIS HBO SHOW DVDS.......2007-06-09

Hard to find a dvd with all good videos. This dvd impressed me, even though I'm not his biggest fan. Bought Wicked Game from Walmart awhile back and couldn't play it half the time due to Digital Rights Management. Plus I rarely use Windows Media Player. Power DVD plays most video and takes snapshots. With this dvd I'm watching the soul wrenching video! Eat your heart out Walmart. Keep your DRM music. HBO please release The Chris Isaak shows on dvd! Stop teasing us with that promise.

4 out of 5 stars Good compilation, but get the DVD/CD version!.......2007-06-01

Chris Isaak is the modern master of high-lonesome and old time croon. From his first CD with Silvertone to "Always Got Tonight" (the final CD represented on this set), you get to follow Isaak's progress from Presley/Orbison acolyte to the delightful, quirky original he is today. While "Wicked Game" (from "Heart Shaped World") was his lone proper hit, he's had many memorable songs and two albums to hone his craft before he entered the national consciousness.

What is interesting is that, even as he has matured as an artist, the roots to his music are still directly traceable to Sun Records. The obsessive Elvis Presley singles "Driving" and "Blue Hotel" to the more subtle "Let Me Down Easy," Isaak has remained stunningly consistent. The songs are always sly and sexy, even with the occasional foray into different vocal styles (the hot growl on "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" from "Forever Blue").

The CD is missing a few songs ("Don't Make Me Dream About You," "Solitary Man," "Cryin'" and "Go Walking Down There"), but if you get the DVD version (Best of Chris Isaak (CD + DVD)) there are six songs that aren't on the CD. The DVD is a treat for another great reason. Skip watching the music videos; make sure to watch with Isaak's commentary. For those familiar with his (inexplicably not yet of DVD) Shotime series or his live shows, Isaak's got a very dry and quirky sense of humor. His belly-laugh-a-minute comments make the extra expenditure worth it.

But even more interesting is watching a young Chris Isaak looking like a pompadoured Rockabilly star on "Blue Hotel" and "Dancin'." It's easy to see how he became a movie-star in training ("The Silence of the Lambs (Widescreen Special Edition)," "Little Buddha" and "A Dirty Shame (NC-17 Rated Theatrical Version)"), but also just as interesting to see the stars who guested in his videos, including the late Chris Penn. But really, make sure you listen to this for the commentary. It's a blast.

5 out of 5 stars OOOOHHHH so GOOD!.......2007-03-09

Chris Isaak is a master at his craft! His style reminds me of Roy Orbison, but he is even better! This album is a joy to listen to - over and over!

5 out of 5 stars Best is great !.......2007-02-17

This is perfect if you own all of C.I.'s cds and want to have one that consolidates the top hits. It's also perfect if you want all those hits but don't have every cd and you get a couple extra bonus songs too. Chris has the purest voice that can melt your heart when he's singing about lost love. Although he's been around for ages and has a devout following of fans, he is not one of those in your face and on every music show kind of guys. His songs popup allover but most people probably can't name who the singer is. That's a good thing for those of us wanting tickets to his shows. SSSHHHHH ! Chris is GREAT !!!!!

With his singular retro-rock vision, Chris Isaak had already graduated from cult figure to music-video heartthrob when he delivered this 1995 album. But if all the surface elements are intact, he has assimilated his chief vocal influences, Orbison and Elvis, even further, and Isaak's songs dig even deeper into his favorite subject, heartbreak, to shorten the distance between writer and singer. "Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing," the set's opener, employs the same growling rock-speak as George Thorogood's notorious "Bad to the Bone," but without a trace of irony--Isaak lashes the listener with the torment of a betrayed lover, telegraphing fear, desire, and anguish as he wheels from rumbling accusations to keening falsetto cries. Elsewhere, he withdraws to the more lyrical croon of his previous work, his band wreathed with the throbbing tremolo and ghostly reverb that are their natural elements. There's a folk-rock jangle to the lovely, forlorn "Somebody's Crying," a disarming directness to the simple but aching title song, and another burst of fevered agony, "Go Walking Down There,"which gallops over a perfect mid-'60s guitar arrangement. For all its letter-perfect allusiveness, though, Forever Blue feels authentically heartbroken, not just cleverly crafted. --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars On the road, its best to listen to it.......2006-10-28

Everyone has a retreat for listening to music, mine is my car on my long road trips as a travelling salesman.

This is a good album to watch the scene go by while letting it sink in..

5 out of 5 stars A rock masterpiece.......2006-09-19

"Nothing matters now to me / Now that I lost my baby" For anyone who has ever felt this way after experiencing love, only to have had it slip through your fingers, this CD is for you. Isaak wonderfully captures the raw emotions of losing someone in these songs, which is why this CD excels so well. He wails as he laments his loss, though he is angry about it as well. Those of us who have gone through this experience understand it very well; we want our love to come back, yet at the same we direct our anger at this person because it is that person's choice. We are helpless because we cannot force the person to come back. "So please, return the love you took from me" he pleads viscerally on "Somebody's Crying." He is trying to cope with this loss and says some things that virtually ensure she won't come back. At this point, he realizes she is not coming back, so he lets the anger surface. The guitars become electric in every sense of the word as they complement the frustration and venting in his voice. A Hammond B3 sounds comfortably at home amidst the guitar and drums, and rock music is the perfect medium for the feelings being expressed. "Everything will work out okay / But not for me / and not for you." With this statement, he perfectly expresses the finality one sees at the end of a relationship, as though that is the end of life altogether. This person is someone we want so much and half of ourselves is suddenly gone. This CD came along just as I was going through this turmoil, which is why I am very thankful to Mr. Isaak for creating this fantastic music.

5 out of 5 stars Chris' voice makes me weak in the knees!!!!.......2006-04-26

This is one of my favorite CDs of all time! Chris Isaak could sing 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall and I would swoon. Everything about this album is perfect, from the voice, to the guitars, to the really-gets-under-your-skin melodies and lyrics.

Somebody's Crying is on my list of the greatest songs ever because it makes me sad and makes me want to dance at the same time. If Chris sang "please return the love you took from me" to me, I wouldn't be able to resist. There She Goes is another favorite. It makes you ache inside to hear the feeling in his voice as he's watching the girl he can no longer have walking along with someone else.

Every song on this album is well-written and incredibly infectious. I, like so many others who have reviewed this album, can listen to it all the way through without having to skip a dud song. This is Chris Isaak's very best album and no self-respecting music lover should be without it. Did I mention that I like Chris Isaak? A lot?

5 out of 5 stars So Very Good.......2006-02-12

Great stuff, year after year. This album is a particularly good one from a really fine artist. What more can I say? Thank you Chris Isaak! You've added an irreplaceable dimension to many many hours.

5 out of 5 stars Forever Blue=Forever Great!.......2006-02-11

I don't know the history of this CD, but I heard it was about his relationship breaking up. Listening to the songs and the theme played throughout, it seems to fit.
This work is awesome. This was the first Chris Isaak CD I ever bought and it remains the best (although I like his other work, too).
There are rocking numbers (Goin' Nowhere), soulful reflections (Things Go Wrong), heartbreakers (Forever Blue) and happy little tunes (I Believe). There is something for everyone. Isaak's range (both in voice and in selection) is varied, but always pleasant.
This is a beautiful work anyway you choose to think about it.

Chris Isaak managed to turn his videogenic visage and brooding masculinity to his advantage in a big way, becoming a sort of MTV-era cross between James Dean and Elvis. Heady stuff, but don't hate him because he's beautiful. In fact, Isaak had been plying his trademark latter-day rockabilly sound for some years before the inclusion of "Wicked Game" in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart jolted sales of Heart Shaped World. (But the stylish Herb Ritts video certainly didn't hurt, either.) Still, the album is a moody gem, featuring the pensive title track, the smoldering "Blue Spanish Sky," and, of course, "Wicked Game." If you still doubt Isaak's good intentions, though, check out the album's rockin' finale, a fine version of Bo Diddley's "Diddley Daddy." --Daniel Durchholz

This is a great CD. I listen to it all of the time every track is fun and well done. I would buy this again with no worries.

5 out of 5 stars Very good music with a vibe. .......2007-03-24

This guy's good!!! Alot of people might only know him for "Wicked Games" and would want to dismiss him as another pretty boy, but that would be a mistake.

There is much that is quite good and in the best tradition of the music that would be in a direct line to those who initially mixed their country influences with rock and roll, in the best possible way.

Instrumentally this album shows how you accompany a vocal well, convey a good vibe. The arrangments for this type of music are perfectly done. While a produced album, it has a working unit live feel to do this. It's more than well produced, it's excellently produced. No technical wizardry that would intrude on the pieces.

There is romance, wistfulness and a hint of the the mythical rock & roll imagery. The mixing of influences country/pop/rockabilly/smooth jazz is seamless.

Heart Shaped World

Don't Make Me Dream About You

A very well done recording.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Pop.......2006-08-20

This is a perfect pop album, something that is extremely rare and to be treasured when discovered. There isn't a weak track on it, and almost every song is an evocative and well crafted gem. Age has not dulled any of its charms. If you're a fan of well crafted pop, this is a must have. I completely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Really unique in the musical world.......2006-05-25

Most folks compare Chris Isaak to Roy Orbison and/or Elvis P., but Mr. Isaak's music as shown in this CD is so much more than that. All of the songs on this CD defy comparison to other songs, and to dismiss them as "rockabilly" or just a Roy Orbison imitation is very superficial. The songwriting and arrangements are really so very good, with the echoey guitars creating the perfect mood. The songs even sound different than most anything else recorded. Compare the guitars and backgrounds in "Wrong to Love You" with just about anything else you have ever listened to, and you will see what I mean. The guitar work in "Forever Young" also sounds just too crisp, too effective, too perfect to be real. It is truly unfortunate that whatever was done on this CD was not repeated in later efforts, because this CD will be listened to 100 years from now. It is hard for me to give 5 star ratings to anything, but no kidding...if you like this kind of music, this is a 5, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Isaak rocks!.......2006-05-19

This is one of my favorite albums. Chris Isaak's seductive vocals and bluesy/ rock n roll sound is always a favorite. His influences range from Elvis to Roy Orbison and they are extremely evident in his vocal style, overall sound and sometimes cover choices. I love the slow, smoky, seductive ballads like "wicked game" from david lynch's wild at heart, "blue spanish sky", "don't make me dream about you" and "heart shaped world" I also love the animalistic and deeply intense "in the heat of the jungle" and the slow burn of "King's of the highway". Isaak's cover of "diddley daddy" also rocks. a 5 star winner. everybody should own this album. it is one of my favorites.

Chris Isaak's Baja Sessions was inspired by a surfing trip the singer took with his band to the Baja California section of Mexico. As the salt in their hair dried in the sun, the four musicians sat around with acoustic guitars and a small drum set, and played some tunes from Isaak's previous albums, some of his unrecorded originals, and some of his favorite old songs by the likes of Roy Orbison, Gene Autry, and Arthur Lyman. The quartet so enjoyed the laid-back, mostly acoustic, Spanish-tinged flavor of these vacation jams that when they got home to the Bay Area, they recreated them in the studio. Baja Sessions is like an Unplugged album, except the sun-drenched, south-of-the-border mood gives these remakes a far fresher twist than most such projects. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Isaak album..........2007-06-13

...and that's saying a lot. I'll admit it, I'm an unabashed Chris Isaak fan, from the music, to the movie appearances (small and cameo as they may be) to the show, which was vastly underrated as a odd, dialouge driven gem.

But, this is an album review, not an Isaak retrospective. My problem with most Chris Isaak albums is not the individual tracks, but the lack of cohesion in the overall album. I'm not one to criticize an artist for taking risks, but most of his albums have a tendency to skip around sometimes, and thats not to say I dont love 'em anyway. But, an album like Baja Sessions is, from start to finish, a south-western, chilled, beachy, Corona-fueled timepiece that sticks to its sandy roots. This is the soundtrack to your tiki-torched backyard barbeque.

3 out of 5 stars Chris Isaac-Baja Sessions.......2007-05-31

Real good Isaac product. Demonstrates the uniqueness of his voice over and over and the subtleness of his writting. Many underproduced songs, but that's what is called for this time. His going to Baja to record makes it all seem like a vacation more than work. I saw Chris open for Stevie Nicks this week in Albuquerque and he is a very funny guy, but you can't tell that on any of this recording. I like this CD and think Chris could go farther if he applies himself. How about Stevie Nicks opening for Chris Isaac??? Hmmm.

5 out of 5 stars 200 Stars.......2007-05-13

This is a wonderful CD. I took it to work and we listen to it alot very one loves it. Every track is great which normally doesn't happen very often. Thank you for listening

4 out of 5 stars Chris Isaak.......2007-04-03

I was introduced to Chris Isaak's song "I Wonder", by a friend. It is a haunting, lyrical piece, I think, and led me to order this CD. I really like most of the songs. Some are more country than "Baja", but most are pleasant to hear.

5 out of 5 stars So Much to Like.......2006-10-10

I cannot remember how I happened to be looking at Chris Isaak's music, but I am so happy I did. He was on a TV special some time ago, and I liked and remembered him. As I looked over his albums and listened to some songs, BAJA SESSIONS stood out as something I would like.

It came the other day, and I have listened many times and am so pleased. I particularly like the south-of-the-border sound, the guitars, and drums with pleasant instrumental breaks. His voice is soft and soothing, and he is very good at the Roy-Orbison sound, which adds another fascinating dimension.

I like all of the songs, too, which is not always possible on some albums. "Only the Lonely", "South of the Border", "I Wonder", "Yellow Bird", "Return to Me", "Sweet Leilani", and well, I should be naming all of them, because they are all so enjoyable.

This may well be one of my favorite enduring albums.

5 out of 5 stars Isaak never disappoints.......2006-06-30

After a long and illustrious career, Isaak has finally released a long overdue greatest hits collection. All the fan favorites and two new, previously unreleased songs. Both new songs are classic Chris Isaak and sure to become staples in his repertoire. This CD is also a good way to introduce the new listener to Chris Isaak if he or she is not that familiar with his work. In an era of bad singers and teen queens who sell more sex than sound, Isaak is a real singer with a voice like an angel and a band that sounds tight and together. Hershel Yatovitz is one of the most underrated guitar players on the music scene today.

Well I guess there is no way to improve on this rating. This is one remarkable CD. Chris Isaak has an incredibly beautiful and sexy voice. He's pretty damn sexy himself. I've ssen him in concert in San Francisco and loved it. If you held a gun to my head and made me make a choice, I'd say this is his best. This is one for the ages.

4 out of 5 stars It was going to be a hand puppet, but I guess I was lucky to get the pencil..........2007-06-01

The CD is missing a few songs ("Don't Make Me Dream About You," "Solitary Man," "Cryin'" and "Go Walking Down There"), but if you get the DVD version there are six songs that aren't on the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Chris Isaac CD/DVD Best of.......2007-05-31

It is better than average product...something you might return to once in a while and not be resigned to the shelves from now on. He is an under rated singer songwritter funnyman model actor...more guts than Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise easily. IF he would only apply himself, get that PR position filled, find a publicist, quit being a slacker Chris. How about Stevie Nicks opening up for your show? Use it or loss it in other words. I just saw you in Albuquerque this past week and you're a treasure. Is your humor off the cuff or rehearsed...your funnier than Steve Martin, seriously! I love your music and have about six of your CD's now so keep up the great work...alright already.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Isaak-Great!!.......2007-05-13

This is so fun to listen to. I love every track and I listen to it alot. The DVD is fun Mr. Isaak has a great sense of humor. I would by this again in a heart beat.

5 out of 5 stars Stress relief.......2007-05-10

Put the CD in the car stereo, wind the windows down and hit the road. No better way to get rid of stress. The DVD is great as well, both with and without the funny comment. And if you have the chance to see Chris Isaak live, don't hesitate.

4 out of 5 stars Worth getting.......2006-11-06

I'm a long-time Chris Isaak fan, so I was very eager to get this. It's a good collection, but I thought it should have included more of his earlier work. The new songs that were included pale by comparison; I was particularly disappointed by "Let's Have a Party." Chris has done much better work; this one seems like he's just coasting. The collection did remind me just how good "Speak of the Devil" was though. The video collection makes this worth the price and essential for most fans.

Chris Isaak's first album in four years, "San Francisco Days," marks no great departures from his previous three. Recorded once again with his same Silvertone band and producer Erik Jacobsen, this is another Isaak collection of brooding songs about unslaked lust and half-completed break-ups; his restrained but lush voice is still out in front of the heavily echoed popabilly guitars. Nonetheless there are subtle differences in this project that make it more varied, more open, more aggressive and better overall than its predecessors. For example, "Lonely with a Broken Heart" sounds like the ultimate Isaak title, but the song is delivered at a brisk swing tempo, pushed by the soulful B-3 organ of the Robert Cray Band's Jimmy Pugh, and Isaak's carefree vocal makes it clear that the song is meant as a sarcastic taunt to a lover who expects him to come crawling back. A similar twist informs "Except the New Girl," which is lit up by lovely steel guitar lines from Tom Brumley (ex-Buck Owens); Isaak confesses to a woman that "there's never been anyone else...," but then adds the kicker, "except the new girl." "Round & Round" features some dirty guitar and a chugging beat, while the album closes with the best song Neil Diamond ever wrote, "Solitary Man," which sounds more lonely and desperate in this minimalist arrangement than it ever did before. Isaak's trump card, as always, is his singing. Like his heroes Roy Orbison and Don Everly, Isaak sings as if it were always 3 a.m., when every other gambit has failed and there are no options left but complete honesty. He pulls so tightly on the reins to his voice that he usually sings in a husky whisper, which is no less lush for being held back. And when he loosens the reins and allows his handsome tenor to rise in power, as it does on the incandescent falsetto chorus to the first single, "Can't Do a Thing (To Stop Me)," the effect is thrilling. --Jeffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars The candyking of earsmoothies.......2006-08-24

Chris Isaak. This CD moves you With a big moooooove. So groovy that it hurts your`e soul. The opening track San Francisco Days, it`s an uptempo smooth soul rocker, with plenty of passion. The voice of Chris Isaak is like a "cool off" when you feel too much chills and trills in your body. Just pure magic. Track 2 Beautiful Homes, is also an uptempo rock and roller. This is more ordinary in the musical departement, but his voice brings the power to the whole adventure. Track 3 Round "N" Round
has a touch of "woodoo hoodoo" feel over it`s, but it` spinns into not too clever directions as a whole, but certainly moody enough. Track 4 Two hearts is a heartful song With enough passion to bring you down, down on youre knee begging for more. The etnic latino touch helps a lot. Track 5 Can`t do a thing( To stop me) is more average at Isaak standard, but the feel, the grove, oh yees. Everything is solid craftmanship. Track 6 Except The new girl is more like an uptempo "country rocker" that shines
on every "blue note". Track 7 Waiting is a minor let down. More slow and sometimes gives you a more insignificant feel over the whole musical experience. Track 8 Move along brings you deep, deep down, and yeees you can feeel it. Eargaasm !. Track 9 I wan`t your love is an uptempo rock&roller that knows it roots,. It has the right touch of "rockabilly feel" and greatness certainly shines on this one. Track 105:15 is way deep down with a "blue Cold "atmosphere sparkles all over. Track 11 Lonley with a broken heart, is a rock and roller with the right creative touches on the right places. Track 11 Solitary man is a simple and ok song,. Quite god. Anyway Chris Isaak is the Candyking for earsmoothies so full of passion, so full of soul.

I bought all of his Cds in one fell swoop last year. Listened to most of them once and got so hooked on Baja Sessions that I didn't spend much time on any of the others.

Well, I went back and relistened to the rest and am very glad I did.
This album rocks, and it's definetly one of my favorites.

San Franciso Days, Beautiful Homes, Two Hearts,
Except The New Girl, Waiting, and I Want Your Love are all classics.
This one is in heavy rotation here in my home office, and it truly does get better with each listen. Kudos to the musicians that back Chris up - I'm getting closer and closer to taking up guitar thanks to wanting to play along while I listen!

As the star of his own Showtime TV show, Chris Isaak plays a sly raconteur with perfect comic timing, but on his eighth album, he shows that he is still intent on continuing in the role of melancholy balladeer. With his movie-star good looks, affable personality, and string of celebrity girlfriends, it's increasingly hard to see him in as the perpetual loser in love, despite the convincing likes of "Cool Love" (Love is a flame / I just got burned again") or the mournful "Nothing to Say" ("Nothing to say now / Nothing to do / I feel my heart breaking and it's all because of you"). The real mystery is why his doctor hasn't given him a prescription for Paxil. Isaak momentarily breaks out of his funk with the adventurous and witty "Notice the Ring," which pays cheeky homage to the Contours' "First I Look at the Purse," and the beat-heavy, Beck-like "Always Got Tonight." But Isaak largely seems content to live in the past, strumming the same vintage guitar licks and singing the same sad, sad songs. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

Isaak's first album since his TV success, and first in four years, 'Always Got Tonight', marks a return to form for the singer-songwriter-guitarist with the smoldering retro-pop vibe who has previously earned four gold or platinum albums. Reprise Records.

1 out of 5 stars His worst album........2007-04-18

I like Chris Isaak - and I have all his albums - but I can't listen to this one. It's just that bad. All the other albums have really strong songs - but these tunes are weak and lifeless...

5 out of 5 stars Hey, it's Chris Isaak.......2006-11-02

If you have never seen this man in concert you are missing a great show. His music is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, Rockin' & Original.......2006-02-12

I've spent many many hours listening to this man's music. He rocks, he sings sweet balads, does a little southwest fusion, and it's all done really well.

Many hours four-wheeling in Wyoming with his music; what a perfect combo (cowboys, wide-open spaces, mountains...). But he still sounds great in the city, too!

5 out of 5 stars chris isaak continues to get better with age.......2005-10-19

i've always described chris isaak as elvis meets roy orbison. he's a modern day crooner who has become better with age. each album is generally better than the previous effort. imo, his latest, 'always got tonight' is his best yet and the album i felt he was capable of and have been expecting from him. it's his most solid, top to bottom, yet.

i think the switch from longtime producer, erik jacobsen, to new producer john shanks was a brilliant move and i told that to mr. isaak, himself, in person after one of his shows. now i've seen some "complaints" that this album is more accessible, poppier and has more hooks than ever before but i don't consider that a bad thing. i am *all about a good hook*, so what he accomplished on this album suited me fine. like i said, i feel it's his best yet. i'd like to see him work with john shanks again or even another producer, like rick rubin.

for a chris isaak album, i give it 5 stars. if i didn't grade on an "isaak curve", i would still give it 4 or 4.5 stars.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun tunes for fun people.......2006-07-24

The Mel-Tones' "Surf Sensation" smacks of retro '60s surf culture. Each of the album's 33 tracks is a punchy little 2-minute surf vignette with a personality of its own. "Surf Sensations" boasts rollicking, uptempo rhythms, lush reverb guitar sounds, and the occasional gleefully shouted word. Highlights include "Kung Fu Saturdays," "Surfin' Natasha," and "Curl Rider Stomp." The music is vaguely reminescent of Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, but with a fresh new flavor. It occasionally strays from surf to spy, martial arts and spaghetti western, but all while maintaining the same distinct instrumental sound. Hard to believe the Mel-Tones hail from Canada, eh?

5 out of 5 stars Superb up-tempo surf.......2006-07-10

If you like up-tempo surf with a 60s flavor, along the lines of the Astronauts, and early Jon & The Nightriders, then you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Another essential cd for the surf music fanatic!.......2006-03-29

I had to savor the content of this cd for a couple months before reviewing it. One thing for certain- you don't need to be living in California circa early 1960's to write/perform great surf music. The boys from Montreal are no exception in "Surf Sensation". Tracks such as Kung Fu Saturdays"," Breakers at Hanalei","The Last Papaya","Distant Shores", and "Cabo Del Cabo" are amongst my favorites. Excellent guitar melodies throughout accented with tasty trem picking, trem dives, muted arpegios, with the manditory drenching of Fender reverb! I don't proclaim you'll like all 33 tracks; you have to listen in order for them to grow on you. No words in the music to anoy or offend you. Surf Music-it's a good thing, very cool, and the Meltones/Surf Sensation is all that!!!

5 out of 5 stars immaculate surf tunes.......2004-10-11

If you are surfing amazon.com for some surf music gems to buy, you have found one right here! This is a stunning and exciting collection from these masters of surf guitar from Canada! The interplay between these two guitarists is incredible, showing a true mastery of the surf music sound. All the songs sound very vintage and totally authentic. Listen to this alblum and you are indeed transported back to the early 60's. This surf music has a darker, aggresive theme to the songs as you can hear from the samples. If you liked some of Dick Dales early surf music you will indeed love this alblum by the Mel-tones. I actually think these guys are better than Dick Dale! You will not find a better surf guitar alblum at Amazon.com, and I give my word on that.

Chris Isaak rocks? Indeed. Granted, the crooner's latest is no noisy, post-grunge Nirvana (though the chord progression of the opener, "Please," recalls Kurt Cobain's "Heart-Shaped Box"), but Devil does find Isaak loosening up. His gut-busting vocals on the free-for-all title track are as near to reckless as we're ever going to hear him. He's also toughening up, growling around his lower register in the death-inflected "Black Flowers." The backing band Silvertone kicks up its heels as well, most infectiously on the gleefully two-steppin' "I'm Not Sleepy." Of course, Isaak's signature shivery, quivering, and wistful ballads remain. And the singer still has a winning way with an unshakable melody. Armed with guitarist Hershel Yatovitz's poignant picking, only Isaak could turn a tired platitude like "Don't Get So Down on Yourself" into a true tearjerker. --Sue VanHecke

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-13

I enjoy his music alot. This CD is a little harder for me to like right away but after listening to it a few times. I get it and enjoy it. It was one of the last CD's I bought of his music. I have all his CD's now.

4 out of 5 stars It`s nearly up there, but it`s not devilsh enough for a 5 star........2006-03-06

Chris Isaak seldom makes a cd that lacks atmosphere. This one has a whole of it, but there are some minor letdown`s to not make this an another masterpiece as his debut album. Track 1 Please is anyway a song in the right direction. His very malesounding voice is pushed forward in the soundpicture, and the song is very atmospheric. Track 2 Flying has much of the same atmospheric temperature, with his voice "wispersinging" into your heart and soul. It goes from high notes to low notes without any problems. Track 3 Walk slow "walkalong" in a very "cool tempo", but has to little variations to make it unforgetable. Track 4 Breaking apart has too much of everything, and it`s very repeating in it`s narrative form. Track 5 This time, is a little gem, with a very enjoyable structure, that make`s you happy. It`s easy to remember, and a song to humm too. Track 6 Speak of the devil, is not devilsh enough, but it has a certain atmosphere too make it a quality listen. Track 7 Like the way she moves, moves not in my direction, but it`s certainly ok, but nothin` special. Track 8 Wanderin it`s one of the weakest tracks on the CD. It never takes off, and you think that you have heard the same theme before on other tracks. Too much cliches in a way. Track 9 Don`t get so down on yourself, has a certain shimmer, but the shimmering is not too bright and light too make it a Isaak classic. Track 10 Black Flowers is a great one, and realy takes control with it`s cold and atmospheric vocal that makes you shiver between "heaven and hell" sometimes here and there. Track 11 I`m not sleepy, is a rocker which rock and roll you back and forward in a good tempo. Track 12 Lonley Nights is a another letdown. It`s too slow, and begins and ends in "neverland". Track 13 Talkin bout home, has a certain sting. The voice and the rythmic section is ok, but that`s what it`s song is all about when it comes down to the point. Track 14 Super Magic 2000, has shoots, birds singing, and a rock & roll classical 50 ths atmosphere. It`s an instrumental with quality, somewhere in David Lynch country". This Cd is anyway nearly up there, but it`s not devilsh enough for a 5 star. Anyway Chris Isaak know`s what he`s dooing. That`s fore sure.
