I'm 38, a lifelong Beatle fan and never bought this album due to the horrendous reviews it got in the various Beatles books I read, really ridiculing the album and attacking Paul for failing to "live up to the promise of Abbey Road with his first three solo releases," although 'Wild Life' is technically the first Wings album. "McCartney" (good) and "Ram" (great!) were also harshly reviewed for the same reasons. What a surprise! "Wild Life" is one of Paul's most fun albums. Almost every song was instantly memorable and I enjoy it as much as any solo Beatle album I've ever heard. It may not be as "important" as Band on the Run but sure is a lot of fun. Paul fans, enjoy!! 5 stars for Paul lovers!
Now that time has passed and the world is no longer outraged at the breakup of the Beatles, one can and should enjoy solo Beatle albums as much as Beatles albums. Our heroes never stopped playing music, they just stopped playing music directly with each other. But I believe the music would have come out the same because the Beatles were writing on their own for years prior to the breakup.
Rather than judge this album (and Paul) because of what is expected of him or the Beatles, we can now listen to this stuff objectively, and "Wild Life" has my vote as the most fun Paul album I've heard yet ... and I still have many to go!

Overlooked And Sadly Disparaged Needlessly?.......2007-03-03

My friend in high school was a big Paul McCartney fan; I was the John Lennon fan. He played this album for me one day in 1972 and I had to say most of it went right by me. I was in the hate part of the love hate relationship I had with Ram at the time. I loved McCartney the first time he played it for me. But somehow those buggers reviewing Wings/Wild Life in Rolling Stone vivi-sected it and made it sound like some second hand amaturish pre-garage band crap that McCartney should not have been associated with. I have similar distraught memories hearing Red Rose Speedway for the first time.

Having owned the American version on CD for some years now(why they didn't include "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" I'll never know); That then is the singular reason why I will rebuy this CD. By the way the original Sometime In New York City by John Lennon is worth tracking down if only for the now Ono-ized expunged Zappa/Mothers/Lennon/Ono side that
Yoko Ono deleted? After the fine Zappa/Mothers Playground Pychotics. Yes, "Scumbag" was actually "King Kong."

On to this senselessly maligned first McCartney/Wings offering. Some good reviews here so I will not add to the otherwise expertly deconstructed reviews of this good cracked Meisterwerk. Following Ram how could this album not be denigrated? The good songs are self-evident. I don't need to go into them. Why buy this CD?

The rather self-effacing and in 1972 somewhat embarrising material actually holds up real well against McCartney's early Eighties material: Tug Of War/Pipes Of Peace/Give My Regards To Broadway. It even trumps the early Nineties stuff. I always went for the live albums starting with Tripping The Light Fantastic.

This is the original Denny Laine(ex-Moody Blue)/Denny Siewell and truly learning to play keyboards late Linda McCartney as the band. Ram part two this could be viewed as. First albums always seem to exude a charm and ambience that seems to miss the mark further down the line.`The album that followed is even more than an enigma than this one.

Why buy this CD? This is Paul McCartney And Wings before the train wreck that led to Band On The Run and Lagos; The consequently refined "Wings" sound that had at its apex Back To The Egg. This is the fun, unself-conscious, and searching McCartney. Wings later gets qualified out of existence; McCartney's Beatle legs re-emerge and looseness and spontaneity
dries up after Red Rose Speedway. This is the equivalent to Neil Young's Tonight The Night. Off the cuff, sloppy, out of tune, overtly emotional,
and fractured; but of a piece. cracked, faulted, but somehow- right.

Bonus tracks kick it up to 4.5*.......2007-02-19

Following Beatles' albums like Abbey Road and his own McCartney, this album seemed a bit offhand, self-indulgent. Listening to the entire set many, many years later, I have to say there's some really fine music here; even the opener (which maybe should have been the original) has an infectious beat and a near-classic riff - it's really another tribute to Mr. Richard Penniman - echoes of "Jenny, Jenny" - who at the time this l.p. was released, could have benefitted by a listening, not to assume he didn't hear it - the recent issue of his '72 Country/Soft Rock "Southern Child" should be noted by both PM and LR fans. Did the "Teacher" learn from the "Student", or was it the other way around? Compare Richard's "If You Pick Her Too Hard (She Comes Out Of Tune)" with "Mama's Little Girl" -wait a minute, that's a bonus cut, sorry...
Another couple of musicians who it's presumed were inspired by this l.p. are Steve Forbert and Mike Boldt. Good company, no?
Gettin' back to the subject of this review, this record stands alone as good music, is representative of the artist, and it's fun to listen to. There's everything you'd expect from Sir Paul (maybe when he did "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" he didn't anticipate Knighthood - pardon the facetious sounding statement - wow, another *bonus* track....). Wild Life has some of the lung-annihilating quality of many past aural endeavours; I don't fully understand the lyric, but that's cool. I believe I dig "Dear Friend", a classic McCartney reflection upon a cooled friendship.
"Love Is Strange" is Rock n' Reggae if you will, a great blend of voices.
This is an interesting use of four musicians - perhaps Paul was going back to his own roots. As Jerry Lee might say, Think about it!

McCartney less Lennon.......2007-01-10

A must for any Beatles or Macca fan. Some of the tracks are a bit weak, but I found it very enjoyable listening to Macca trying to find his way musically without John. It had been many years since I had heard "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb", and I found both to be quite enjoyable.

McCartney's Worst Effort.......2007-01-05

Other than the strong tracks on the album (SOME PEOPLE NEVER KNOW, TOMORROW, DEAR FRIEND, all a bit overlong) this album has hardly anything to offer. It was recorded over just a few days with a fresh band and it feels that way. Songs like LOVE IS STRANGE and WILD LIFE are half finished and tunes like MUMBO, BIP BOP and I AM YOUR SINGER are just worthless junk.

The bonus tracks are nice. Give Ireland Back To The Irish is McCartney's best attempt at having a backbone in his solo career. Mary Had A Little Lamb is a garbage response to the BBC banning "Irish". It have no musical value. Little Woman Love is a nice underrated track from that era. Mama's Little Girl is a lovely little acoustic track that remained unreleased until 1989 or 1990 on the Put It There CD single. It very well may be the best track on the disc.

Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

The Best Historical CD Ever!.......2003-11-21

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

An Undiscovered Gem.......2004-12-16

I was lucky enough to see The Wild Colonials open for Toad the Wet Sprocket many years ago. In the end, their live show was even better than Toad's and I bought the c.d. at their concert.

I found this c.d. to be a wonderful mix of gritty, soul-filled ballads with exceptionally well-written lyrics and diverse music style(s). It's one of those few c.d.'s where as a listener you're not sure what to expect, from fiddle to bass, from rock to jazz, this release covers a wide range.

I have to admit I was a bit let down on the second release, but that's the usually the way sophomore efforts go. I do think that they had/have the talent to be around for a long time to come.

I am still riding on a rainbow..........2002-03-10

Now here is a band that not only is timeless, but also remains vital to the survival of modern music as we know it. From their days at Largo to motion picture sound gems, the Wild Colonials have mangaged to amaze and attract even the most jaded of music fans. That is very hard to do, especially from a band that was formed here in good ol' L.A. Their sound is hard to describe and catagorize, which is a very good thing! :) If you like great uplifting music that won't get on your nerves, then they are the band for you. This album is a great place to start. The songwriting is amazing and so is the talent from everyone; from Angela's unique Scotish voice to Shark's beautiful accompaning guitar, to Paul's classical violin, to Scot's versital instrumentations. The great thing about this album is the fact that Matt Tillman, the Swedish classical cello player graces songs like, "heaven and hell" and "Alice in wonderland." English lacks the superlatives to describe this album. In today's pop culture, in which crass commercialism crushes originality, Fruit of Life stands out as a perfect jewel. The depth of their lyrics astounds. The range of their vocals intrigues. The purity of their harmony amazes. All in all, the best CD in years. No wonder the big labels ignore them!

Amazing voice, Amazing CD.......2000-06-02

This CD along with their second rarely leave my CD player. The Wild Colonials are not easy to describe, Angela (the singer)is Scottish, some of the band are from Canada and they formed in LA. Angela has just the most amazing voice, not "pretty" it is emotional and full of soul. There is a definite celtic feel to the album, but it is not that new-age celtic stuff, instead there is traditional fiddle mixed into a garage band sound. All of the songs are wonderful and cover a wide range of styles. Philadelphia Story is a sweet love song with a happy ending, Dear Mike is a love letter to Mike Scott of the Waterboys. She also covers Billy Holiday's Don't Explain, and although her voice is less than perfect there is such raw emotion in her singing that it is impossible not to be moved. Fruit of Life is a wonderful, for the most part upbeat, pop record.

Best Band since Indigo Girls.......2000-02-05

I cannot say enough about this album. Every song is a treat-- I have been listening to the album for well over a year. The music is similar to ballads by Everything But the Girl and Indigo Girls, and even better in some ways. A word of caution, however: the 1996 album is much different, reflecting a harder and faster sound.

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.

Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."

That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."

Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.

Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.

Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01

If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.

Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20

Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...

...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)

So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.

Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07

Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.

Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23

Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.

Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.

Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.

one of the underappreciated bands .......2007-06-29

ok, I bought this when it was first released and loved it almost from the get go. It's hard for me to rate something this good any lower because this is just one of those albums you remember from a certain point in your life. Take it from a person who loves all varieties of metal, be it hard rock, thrash, death metal, whatever, I know a talented band when I hear it. These guys have been great in my opinion from the get go. Great album from start to finish.

Under-rated and under-appreciated. Slaughter was great!!.......2006-01-14

Slaughter's album, Stick it To Ya! was a huge success and the follow-up album, The Wild Life, was one of my favorite in albums in 90s. Slaughter had hit singles from this with Wild Life and Real LOve and the song "Days Gone By" is one of my favorites.

I miss Slaughter and I miss a number of bands from the 90s and I can't believe that I am the first person to review this under-rated and under-appreciated albums.

A mixed bag of romantic offerings.......2001-12-17

BMG's Lanza collections are usually a mixed bag, and this album of love songs is no exception. Interspersed with some magnificent performances are an assortment of the good, the bad, and the mediocre. Part of the problem, I suspect, is that BMG simply doesn't appreciate what treasures it has buried in its recording vaults. It's enough to bring back Lanza from the grave, swearing in High C (as Time Magazine once tut-tutted) at the injustice of it all.

Lanza, in fairness to BMG, was an inconsistent performer. In the earlier part of his brief career, he had a tendency to sing sharp, and at times his approach to various arias and songs lacked sensitivity. That's not to say he couldn't get it right. At his best he was extraordinary, combining one of the most powerful voices on record with just the right degree of melting mezza voce and a dazzling array of vocal colours. His sense of phrasing was, as Enrico Caruso Jr noted, "instinctively right", and his ability to get into the heart of a song was unquestionable. Even at his roughest, his singing was usually compelling, and one could never label any of his performances "boring".

The bad recordings generally fall into three periods of his life: the Coca-Cola Radio shows of 1951-52, the disastrous Lanza on Broadway album of 1956, and the illness-affected stereo remakes of his Christmas Carols and Student Prince albums, both recorded in 1959, the year of his death. The present CD includes material from the first two periods.

The "Coke" shows, as I've opined in a number of other reviews, produced some amazing performances of both arias and love songs. Unfortunately, however, lack of rehearsal time coupled with poor arrangements often led to the kind of wild, unrestrained singing that Lanza's detractors love to attack (while at the same time overlooking his great performances). On this CD, a number of Coke recordings were released for the first time: Danny Boy; My Wild Irish Rose; Neapolitan Love Song; and Torna a Surriento. The first two are lovely, notwithstanding a poor ending on Danny Boy and some uncertain moments in the tenor's lower register in this song. Victor Herbert's Neapolitan Song contains some piercingly sharp singing, a rough ending and some agreeable mezza voce. Torna a Surriento is too fast, too unpolished and not a patch on the piano accompaniment-only version that Lanza recorded three years later for the movie Serenade.

Among the other Coke selections is the sublime Memories, and the alternately touching and thrilling I'll Be Seeing You, with a B Flat climax that will knock your socks off. Wanting You is rough and exciting in equal measure - ditto the powerhouse Ah Sweet Mystery of Life with its ridiculously fast tempo.

Two songs from the ill-fated Lanza on Broadway album have been inexplicably included, though it must be said that at least these represent the better moments from this dreadful session. You'll Never Walk Alone contains more sharp singing, uneven rhythm and a certain bleariness, while the Borodin-adapted And This Is My Beloved is alternately belted and seductive. Incidentally, Lanza recorded a superior version of You'll Never Walk Alone for his Coke Shows; this is featured on the CD of the same name.

The real highlights for me are the immortal Serenade from The Student Prince; a thrilling Only a Rose (recorded three months after the Lanza on Broadway session and featuring a completely different voice); the aforementioned My Wild Irish Rose & I'll Be Seeing You and a mature rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria. Fans will also enjoy Arrivederci, Roma, and the ubiquitous Be My Love.

All in all an enjoyable hour, but if only more thought had been put into some of the selections...

The best tenor ever.......2001-03-01

Mario Lanza is indeed my favourite of all tenors either living or not. I must have almost everything he ever recorded. This album has a whopping 24 tracks including 5 previously unreleased recordings, which make this a must for any true fan of Lanza. This album has some of his most romantic songs, mostly from stage and film. You won't find any opera here, which is fine, there's plenty of his other albums that have that. These are songs that are guaranteed to stir your heart and soul while Mario's voice will melt them. This is a must-have and at this price there's no reason not to have it.

The greatest singer of all time!.......2000-06-29

This is one of the greatest compilations of Tenor Mario Lanza, The Voice of the Century, ever made. Mario Lanza had such a broad, well focused voice and he is represented to good measure here on songs like "Wanting You", "Neapolitan Love Song", and "Without a Song". On these selections one hears how the Lanza voice had a largeness, depth, and warmth from the bottom all the way to the very top. One will never hear songs like "O Danny Boy", "My Wild Irish Rose", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Torna Surriento", "O Solo Mio", and "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" sung any better or with more feeling. My favorite on this CD, "And this is my Beloved" from Kismet displays the full Lanza Range. This, in my opinion, is one of the greatest single recordings ever made. Here Mario sings the most melting pianissimo and builds to an exciting, full bodied, heart stopping fortissimo High B flat. What passion! The particular recording of "Only a Rose" on this album has been regrettably absent from the catalogs for quite some time. It is a shame too, because Lanza makes this Vagabond King selection sound free and effortless like only Mario Lanza could. Lanza takes the listener through a guided tour, so speak, of truly the greatest singing the world has ever heard. After hearing the final selection, "You'll Never Walk Alone", there won't be a dry eye in the house. This, along with the "Don't Forget Me" Lanza CD, is one of the greatest single CD collections ever put together of Mario, or anyone else for that matter. Lanza was the greatest singer of all time and this is a must have album. The sooner you own this one, the better.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".


Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

Standup comedian, actress, and singer Lea DeLaria presents a less confrontational image here than she did on 1994's Bulldyke in a China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident, and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little-girl-lost innocence to harder-edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got Your Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take," we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen--while it is pastiche, the characterization is startlingly evocative.

DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz," confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. I wish Delaria would put out more albums like this one. Her voice and interpretation of the songs on the album are really great and withstand lots of repeat plays. Highly recommended. Many of the cuts are worth 5 stars, but I didn't really like all of her song choices, so that's why I rated the album 4 stars.

All I can say is...WOW.
When my partner and I saw Lea perform her routine in P-town, she wowed us with a stunning version of one of my all-time favorites, "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd." We bought her CD on the spot and it stayed in my car's CD player for weeks on end (and then I only took it out because I had to switch cars).
I enjoyed the whole album, but I found myself playing the first track over and over, and even singing it in the shower. I must disagree with the "Cigar" review on all counts, at least regarding this track. The song lends itself so beautifully to swingin' jazz I can't believe nobody thought of it before. But I'm glad no one has, because Lea DeLaria knocks it out of the park. The smooth delivery is perfect for the dry humor of the lyrics, her belts are such a perfect blend of head and chest it sends chills up my spine, and the arrangement is spot-on. The best part - it stands up beautifully to repeat listenings; I just can't grow tired of this rendition. The opening track alone is worth twice the price of this CD.

Maybe it's my fault. Because of Angela McClusky's vocals on Telepopmusic Genetic World, I bought "This Can't Be Life", "Fruit of Life", and "Reel Life". I am sorry, they are not at all what I expected. You don't know until it's too late. If you insist, then take my advise and buy only one at a time.

My first introduction to the Wild Colonials was when a group of my friends were watching the horrible movie "Cabin by the lake" and the song CURE kept being played and kept giving me chills...sadly the movie didn't give them credit at the end so I went on an endless search online to find this band, thankfull I did.
REEL LIFE is a great idea for an album that actually works very well as a concept album (in a sense) instead of just a mere compilation of movie songs. Some of the offerings are just breath-taking, especially "Brokedown Palace", "If By Chance" (Cyndi Lauper's harmony is beautiful!), and "Friend. The instrumental tracks hold their own as well. This cd is great for fans of the Cowboy Junkies or Over the Rhine to start but the Wild Colonials are definatly standing far from any comparison by producing cd's like this one. I'm looking forward to Vol.2 as well as anything else they throw my way!

A very nice compilation.......2000-10-08

Being a big fan of this band after hearing their first two cd's, I had some pretty high expectations. Fortunately, I was not disappointed as this cd is very entertaining and offers another fine example of how good this band really is. What is really interesting about this cd is how diverse these musicians are and Angela in particular. From the bluesy "Anything But Love" (where Angela's voice compliments Dr. John's perfectly) to "Brokedown Palace" which offers a touch of gospell flavor, to the folksy "If By Chance" there is alot to appreciate. The 5 instrumentals are really good and give the listener an opportunity to enjoy the talent of the other band members without McCluskey. The instrumental version of "Victim" in particular offers a different perspective on this great song. Overall, this cd is a big winner and it continues to amaze me how such an outstanding band can continue to be so unrecognized.

This is one of the best Albums of the Year! I like hearing the instrumentals and some of the gorgeuos new songs. I keep coming back to this album again and again. The band just keep getting better and better. Yes, I'm looking forward to their next album but, how can anyone complain about this fantastic disc?

Amazing band; decent album.......2000-03-17

I'm a little disappointed by the latest from the Wild Colonials. I discovered them when their second album came out, and I've been in love ever since. I've been hoping for a new album, and I was starting to think the band had broken up, so I was thrilled when Reel Life came out. A lot of this album is good, but there are enough duds (and reruns) to make me a little disappointed.

My first complaint is the inclusion of three songs from the first two albums. It seems to me that nearly everyone who would purchase a compilation like this is already a fan of the band. So why include songs we've heard before? Also, while the instrumental songs are nice, I'm not a huge fan of non-vocal music. As far as I'm concerned, Angela's voice is too wonderful to let go to waste! Finally, a couple of the remaining songs are a little annoying. The Dr. John duet is just plain awful, and "Cure", while nice, is too repetitive to bear repeated listening.

The rest of the album is good, though. And the CD was worth buying just for the AMAZING cover of "Brokedown Palace". It's one of the band's best songs to date, and probably one of the loveliest songs I've ever heard.

I look forward to the Colonials' next offering, but I really hope it's a "real" album, and not Reel Life Vol. 2.
