Underwater Cinematographer

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The first entirely non-Broken Social Scene related signing for Arts & Crafts, Most Serene Republic are like their younger cousins from Milton, Ontario. A band who practice at the end of a dirt road and have lovingly sponged elements of indie rock from the last 15 years and made it their own--their sound is innocent and wide-eyed, raw and idealic. Rocking with a youthful spirit & optimism. Will be touring with Broken Social Scene.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2006-02-02

After being introduced to Broken Social Scene circa 'Bee Hives', I steadily turned into more and more of an indie/ post rock/ electronica junkie. That aside, I may be a bit biased.

But for the love of God, whats in the water in Canada? I have yet to find an Arts and Crafts band that I dislike. The Most Serene Republic is no exception. This band excels at both unique new sounds and a diverse repotoire. Listeners of Death Cab, The American Analog Set, or even some Arcade Fire will love the lyrical complexity and harmonies. At the same time, the use of simple building patterns and shout choruses sound like some pseudo Sigur Ros/ Modest Mouse approach. I must be honest, after reading the lyrics, I was a bit skeptical of what this group would sound like. After all, who knew that such a powerful song could come from a board game analogy? Regardless, this album is simply an incredible piece of work, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with tastes such as these. Soon enough, you'll find yourself driving down the highway late at night singin "III think, we all know the words!"....

4 out of 5 stars If you can..........2006-01-21

See these guys live, they put on a great show. I liked what I heard, I picked up the album. I liked what I heard, but unfortunately what this album lacks (I find) is longevity. That aside, it truly is a great album. A lot of the songs (even the sad ones) are filled with optimism. Which is completely understandable; they're a young band that only recently hit it big. I see great things in this band's future, seeing as their ambition on this album is just astounding. The songs are pretty, and (as I say) their live show is incredible, which is bound to attract new fans. Of course, Broken Social Scene is the touchstone here, and with Underwater Cinematographer they pose the (10-piece?) some competition.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2006-01-04

This album is definitely recommended for fans of broken social scene, which I am not. However, I love this album. What separates it from their label mates is that BSS albums are only about 85% lyrical, and mostly musical experiments which, to a degree, work. But I'm not really a fan.

The Most Serene Republic captures the heart and carefree stlye of BSS without sounding like a clone. Every song on the album rocks in its own way. Some with lound shouting, some with rocking electric guitar. Listen to the samples on this page and judge for yourself. I happen to think that this is one of the most overlooked albums of the year, hopefully it'll pick up some steam soon. Definitely check it out.

PS. The comparison to Ben Gibbard's vocals is not an accurate one. These are more group-oriented vocals. When they are solo, it sounds more like a mix between Radiohead and The Flaming Lips....again, without being a clone of either.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut.......2005-12-11

I hate to make comparisons to other bands, but it helps establish a frame of reference for those who haven't heard TMSR. Take Radiohead circa Kid A. Make the songs more coherent and accessible (albeit not commercial), subtract a substantial amount of self-indulgent electronic noodling (but not all of it), and add in more guitar. Give the songs a playful quality by adding in clapping, laughter and other sounds that strangely enough seem to fit perfectly within the song. Make a few of the songs a little more playful by giving them titles like "You're a Loose Cannon, MacArthur, but You Get the Job Done." Make it clear that while you take your music seriously, you don't take yourselves too seriously. Congratulations, you just learned the recipe for what makes "Underwater Cinematographer" so darn catchy.

I strongly suspect that we'll be hearing more from these guys, and I for one cannot wait. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Experimental and fun........2005-09-18

I bought this CD after seeing an ad on Pitchfork for them.
I am a big fan of BSS, so I figured TMSR would be just as good.

And right I was.

Take BSS's experimental part, throw in a Ben Gibbard-ish sounding singer, some hand clapping and laughter, and you have The Most Serene Republic.
I look forward to hearing any future releases from them... very promising.
