The latest in a series of highly polished albums of good-natured boogie, blues, and singer-songwriter fare, Bonnie Raitt's Silver Lining won't disappoint the initiated. Recorded with her highly seasoned road band and coproduced (again) by the ubiquitous Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, this is a high-quality product. The question, as always, is whether the material raises it to the level of extraordinary. Raitt picks songs shrewdly. Here, the unearthed gems are David Gray's title song and the closing ballad, "Wounded Heart," by Jude Johnson. Less successful and more, well, familiar are the songs cowritten with her bandmates. Instrumental highlights include Bonnie's slide duel with Roy Rogers on "Gnawin' It" and Andy Abad's highlife guitar chops on Oliver Mtukudzi's "Hear Me Lord." Jon Cleary's barrelhouse keys throughout owe a debt to Billy Payne of Little Feat. One may occasionally wish the producers had been allowed more rein to pepper the arrangements with their trademark quirky instrumentation, but the record rewards repeated listens. --Rob Stewart

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Bonnie tones down the electric.......2006-03-06

Silver Lining further demonstrates Bonnie Raitt's desire to branch out into as many genres of music in one album as humanly possible. The results are usually quite positive, although a couple of her choices have gone outside the realms I can appreciate. You certainly can't fault her ambition. It seems she can use her past successes as a vehicle to now finally play exactly what she wants. This is not a criticism, as the strain can be heard in albums such as Nine Lives when she did not have full artistic control.

I still tend to prefer Bonnie when she plays it a bit more straitforward, rather than veering off track. More familiar trademark Raitt here includes the shimmering title track (written by David Gray), and "Valley of Pain," where her ever expressive slide guitar is back at the forefront. Elsewhere, there is everything from the low down n' muddy (with horns) "Gnawin' On It," to the funky "Monkey Business," and the vaguely raggae "Hear Me Lord," around to the sparce piano driven closer "Wounded Heart."

Bonnie has no doubt earned all her stripes, and deserves to enjoy her sunset years with such artistic variance. Though I'm sure there are more than a few of us that miss the good times of "Thing Called Love" and "Something to Talk About." At the end of the day, any slightly better than average BR album is equal to a great one by most everyone else... so it's all relative.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best effort.......2005-11-28

Silver lining in my mind is a very mediocre CD.
It does have I Cant Help you Now.
No Getting Over You is another very good song and the best on the album in my mind.
It is a very strong blues song. I like Bonnie best when she is playing the blues.
Wounded Heart ends the CD with a song played on piano.
This is not her best Cd, but not her worst either.

3 out of 5 stars No Gettin' Over You . . ........2003-08-23

. . . kicks it! I can't believe nobody's mentioned 'No Gettin' Over You.' This tune is all Bonnie - slide licks that swing and twang and sling, trying to recover from a bad relationship, but just not quite making it (but trying hard). This tune gives me goosebumps every time I hear it - no joking.
P.S. Delaney who?

5 out of 5 stars at least as good as anything she's ever done.......2003-06-25

Bonnie Raitt: any praise is unnecessary. I'm just thankful she's out there giving us mature, rocking music like this. She is one of a kind. The poignancy and vulnerability of the last track, "Wounded Heart" may move you to tears. She sings every song as if it were her favorite. She is the compleat musician.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth Having.......2003-05-26

I was not a Bonnie Raitt fan when I bought this album on the recommendation of a friend. Now I am. This woman is incredible. She sings like no one else I've ever known. Her enthusiasm and skill match that of any singer I've ever heard. I will gladly pay megabucks to go see this woman in concert the next time she comes to Dallas.

Do yourself a favor: buy this album.

"It's funny," Dave Pirner ponders in "Success Is Not So Sweet," one of a dozen songs on Soul Asylum's first album since 1998, "how the players can't survive the game." Pirner has obviously come to realize that with accomplishment comes consequence, but with Soul Asylum, it also has brought resilience. After rising from barstool misfits to international pop stars in the early '90s, the band was ostensibly shot out of the sky. Two subsequent records failed to live up to the million-seller Grave Dancer's Union. Pirner's New Orleans home got caught in the middle of Hurricane Katrina. And founding member Karl Mueller lost his battle with cancer. Yet here they are with album number nine, sporting a trace more big league sparkle, but with the frayed cleverness and rock-solid musicianship that their fans know best. Pirner's melody-rich musings "Stand Up and Be Strong," "Lately," and "Bus Named Desire" allow ample elbow room for guitarist Dan Murphy, and his bittersweet ballads hearken back to gold records and runaway trains. Sure, success may come with a price. But it can also have a silver lining. --Scott Holter

Album Description

Soul Asylum's ninth full-length album, is every bit as quirky and off-centered cut-to-the-bone rock as their hardcore fans have come to expect, an indication that the Minneapolis-bred band has lost none of its edge. And why should they? The new Soul Asylum songs--"Crazy Mixed Up World," "Standing Water," "Success Is Not So Sweet," "All Is Well," "Good For You," "Lately," "Oxygen," and the lead single "Stand Up And Be Strong"--capture the band at its best: swinging, soothing, and rocking.

"I'm really proud of this record," said Dan Murphy. "It's a guitar record and it was really fun to record. It will always remind me of Karl when I listen to it. He was really sick, but still pulled through and finished it in Soul Asylum fashion."

"It makes me think of Karl," agreed Dave Pirner. "It was long overdue to record exclusively in Minneapolis because we hadn't done so in 15 years and the natural surroundings of home was something we needed. We feel extra proud of it because we did it on our own."

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!!!!.......2007-06-03

What can I say, I was pleasently surprised when I heard this CD. Definately work the buy and I of course I am a Clerks fan so it always makes me happy when their songs are in the movies. Great buy all around; I like it a lot!

5 out of 5 stars "Say Hello to the Underground, Say Hello for Me".......2007-02-25

"Say Hello to the Underground, Say Hello for Me"

Soul Asylum's brand new Studio album since 1998's `Candy from a Stranger'. The band re-emerges & brings to its fans `The Silver Lining' which is not the hard core material a fan may expect but I am pleased to see that the band has evolved for the better.

The new album has a modern pop rock edge to it. It certainly is driven with Guitars as David Pirner states. The album is also one in which we see the departure of bassist Karl Mueller who struggled with Cancer but contributed on the record until the very end.

Soul Asylum, I am sure will sell out their tour dates upon announcement & they certainly in their new evolved sound are just as edgy & rock driven. This is proved by the following tracks:

*Stand Up & Be Strong (Excellent Lead Single), *Listen, *Crazy Mixed Up World, and
*The Great Exaggerator.

The real highlights include:
*Watcha Need, *Standing Water, *Success Is Not So Sweet, and the hidden track *Fearless Leader which should have been an album track & not a hidden track but it's a treat none the less!

Whilst the new album may be filled with more structured rock pop songs with catchy infectious choruses that you can feel are coming from miles away, I am pleased that Soul Asylum continued & soldiered on showcasing their dedication to music. As with so many of towards so called artists - we'd be lucky if they gave us more than 1 record.

After their album `Let Your Dim Light Shine', `The Silver Lining' would have been a better follow up than `Candy from a Stranger'. But a good come back it certainly is.

Thank you Soul Asylum for putting out an album that I can enjoy from start to finish.

P.s. Any tour dates penned in for Auckland, New Zealand??

4 out of 5 stars welcome back to the asylum.......2007-01-22

This group is one I've always enjoyed and one I have truly missed what with their recent absence from the rock scene. Their past work has been excellent, especially "Runaway train", which I can never hear too often. David Pirner has not lost his touch, as the lyrics and music on "The Silver Lining" are vintage Pirner. The band is extremely strong too, and I pass my condolences on to them for their loss of Karl Mueller. "Stand Up and Be Strong" is the group doing just that; producing a surefire smash hit on the way. "Lately", "Crazy Mixed Up World" "All is Well" are also very good tunes that measure up to the past work of the group. I also really liked "Watcha Need", "Success is not so Sweet" and "The Great Exaggerator." Please don't miss the hidden pearl on the cd; at the end of track 12 "Slowly Rising" is a another acoustic gem that is a political satire, scathing and unrepentant. This is really a fine cd and I highly recommend it for any Asylum fan or anybody interested in entering the "Asylum." Good to have you back, fellas.

3 out of 5 stars Great band- dull songs.......2007-01-19

This being their first CD in many years, they sound very strong, very together, & very well produced with a live feel & very little overdubbing. The guitars are effectively jangly & distorted and bass & drums are mixed well. Pirner's vocals sound stronger than ever and the lyrics are well written as usual. Sounds like a solid rockin' good time doesn't it? Unfortunately most of this CD consists of ballads with very generic, conventional song structures with big choruses you can feel coming a mile away. But I'm not totally displeased with this and It's a welcome return after a long wait. The best tracks IMO are "Lately" which contains some poignant lyrics about a soldier's guilt trip for what he was made to do during the war, and how strong family ties can help relieve the guilt, "Bus Named Desire" a fairly good rocker, "Success Is Not So Sweet", and "Slowly Rising" a good rocker with slightly dumb lyrics. Not an awful CD but "Hang Time" is still their best- by a long shot.

5 out of 5 stars BEST NO BS.......2007-01-04

For real, Get this album. I adore the punk elements of "slowly rising" it come out with energy and ends with what I think is the best hidden song ever done and sang. It should have been on a track list, does it have a name, I don't know. It is a shocker. Other great tracks I enjoy are "oxygen","stand up be strong", and "lately". Another thing, the lyrics are well written and easy to conjure up such imagery and connections to the listener like no other album has done for me in a long time. I saw these guys a few years back and I throught they rock, I'm hoping they tour around my area in the UK for this album. One of the best bands from the wild north.

As Hammerstein writes in the opening song, "Many dames with lofty aims strive for lofty goals"--and Te Kanawa strives for successful crossover. Her beautiful singing exhibits impeccable diction and excellent phrasing; but "A Fine Romance" lacks anger and humor, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" lacks a storyteller, and "All the Things You Are" lacks romanticism. However, happy songs like "All Through the Day," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," are successfully interpreted. Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations enhance Kern's beauty through his captivating use of obbligato instruments. A pleasant, if not wholly satisfactory, listening experience. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars kiri kern.......2007-03-29

Kiri is sensational on this CD. Jerome Kern music is stupendous and the arrangements superb. Three top esses.

5 out of 5 stars Kiri sing Kern is a great experience.......2004-01-18

I love the way she sings Kern's songs. Though certainly not opera, Kern's songs benefit from an an operatic approach--not all of them, but certainly ones such Smoke gets in your Eyes, The song is you, All the things you are. I love Kern;s songs sung in many styles but Kiri's way is one of the best.

On the other hand, I did not like Kiri singing Berlin.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks Splendor.......2002-09-01

Though I do enjoy Kiri's interpretation of most music, and this CD was decent, I did not find any piece particularly memorable.

The voice is undeniably beautiful, and Kiri has managed to keep her maturing voice sounding somewhat young, yet I find that I much prefer her rendition of "The Laughing Song" to that of "Smoke Gets in YOur Eyes."

If you love Kern, and couldn't care less who performs it, than purchase this CD. If you are a fan of Kiris', then perhaps it would be best to avoid this purchase...for it is not a shining star in her vast collection of CDs. All in all, it was a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars White Glove Kern.......2001-05-20

I am the first to admit that most "crossover" albums, be they of classical performers singing pop or vice versa never quite cross over. This album does splendidly. Kern's music is the most related to classical operetta , and therefore the least jazziest. Operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa gives luscious, heartfelt readings of these wonderful songs, backed by glamorous orchestrations. Hearing a voice of such opulence and beauty in this music is a rare treat. Just listen to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ,"Long Ago and Far Away" or "The Song is You" and prepare to be swept away to another, more elegant time.

3 out of 5 stars mildly disappointing.......2000-09-30

Sometimes cross-over works, sometimes not. While Kiri te Kanawa has a beautiful voice, she never gets into the idiom of these Jerome Kern masterpieces sufficiently to convey their stories or their subtleties. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes especially stands out, she sings it with none of the pathos the song demands and her version pales compared to the Platters. The orchestral arrangements are decent and in many of the songs the purity of her voice is enough to carry them, but overall I would say this is a disappointing example of a crossover record. Ms. te Kanawa should stick to what she does best.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of romantic offerings.......2001-12-17

BMG's Lanza collections are usually a mixed bag, and this album of love songs is no exception. Interspersed with some magnificent performances are an assortment of the good, the bad, and the mediocre. Part of the problem, I suspect, is that BMG simply doesn't appreciate what treasures it has buried in its recording vaults. It's enough to bring back Lanza from the grave, swearing in High C (as Time Magazine once tut-tutted) at the injustice of it all.

Lanza, in fairness to BMG, was an inconsistent performer. In the earlier part of his brief career, he had a tendency to sing sharp, and at times his approach to various arias and songs lacked sensitivity. That's not to say he couldn't get it right. At his best he was extraordinary, combining one of the most powerful voices on record with just the right degree of melting mezza voce and a dazzling array of vocal colours. His sense of phrasing was, as Enrico Caruso Jr noted, "instinctively right", and his ability to get into the heart of a song was unquestionable. Even at his roughest, his singing was usually compelling, and one could never label any of his performances "boring".

The bad recordings generally fall into three periods of his life: the Coca-Cola Radio shows of 1951-52, the disastrous Lanza on Broadway album of 1956, and the illness-affected stereo remakes of his Christmas Carols and Student Prince albums, both recorded in 1959, the year of his death. The present CD includes material from the first two periods.

The "Coke" shows, as I've opined in a number of other reviews, produced some amazing performances of both arias and love songs. Unfortunately, however, lack of rehearsal time coupled with poor arrangements often led to the kind of wild, unrestrained singing that Lanza's detractors love to attack (while at the same time overlooking his great performances). On this CD, a number of Coke recordings were released for the first time: Danny Boy; My Wild Irish Rose; Neapolitan Love Song; and Torna a Surriento. The first two are lovely, notwithstanding a poor ending on Danny Boy and some uncertain moments in the tenor's lower register in this song. Victor Herbert's Neapolitan Song contains some piercingly sharp singing, a rough ending and some agreeable mezza voce. Torna a Surriento is too fast, too unpolished and not a patch on the piano accompaniment-only version that Lanza recorded three years later for the movie Serenade.

Among the other Coke selections is the sublime Memories, and the alternately touching and thrilling I'll Be Seeing You, with a B Flat climax that will knock your socks off. Wanting You is rough and exciting in equal measure - ditto the powerhouse Ah Sweet Mystery of Life with its ridiculously fast tempo.

Two songs from the ill-fated Lanza on Broadway album have been inexplicably included, though it must be said that at least these represent the better moments from this dreadful session. You'll Never Walk Alone contains more sharp singing, uneven rhythm and a certain bleariness, while the Borodin-adapted And This Is My Beloved is alternately belted and seductive. Incidentally, Lanza recorded a superior version of You'll Never Walk Alone for his Coke Shows; this is featured on the CD of the same name.

The real highlights for me are the immortal Serenade from The Student Prince; a thrilling Only a Rose (recorded three months after the Lanza on Broadway session and featuring a completely different voice); the aforementioned My Wild Irish Rose & I'll Be Seeing You and a mature rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria. Fans will also enjoy Arrivederci, Roma, and the ubiquitous Be My Love.

All in all an enjoyable hour, but if only more thought had been put into some of the selections...

5 out of 5 stars The best tenor ever.......2001-03-01

Mario Lanza is indeed my favourite of all tenors either living or not. I must have almost everything he ever recorded. This album has a whopping 24 tracks including 5 previously unreleased recordings, which make this a must for any true fan of Lanza. This album has some of his most romantic songs, mostly from stage and film. You won't find any opera here, which is fine, there's plenty of his other albums that have that. These are songs that are guaranteed to stir your heart and soul while Mario's voice will melt them. This is a must-have and at this price there's no reason not to have it.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest singer of all time!.......2000-06-29

This is one of the greatest compilations of Tenor Mario Lanza, The Voice of the Century, ever made. Mario Lanza had such a broad, well focused voice and he is represented to good measure here on songs like "Wanting You", "Neapolitan Love Song", and "Without a Song". On these selections one hears how the Lanza voice had a largeness, depth, and warmth from the bottom all the way to the very top. One will never hear songs like "O Danny Boy", "My Wild Irish Rose", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Torna Surriento", "O Solo Mio", and "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" sung any better or with more feeling. My favorite on this CD, "And this is my Beloved" from Kismet displays the full Lanza Range. This, in my opinion, is one of the greatest single recordings ever made. Here Mario sings the most melting pianissimo and builds to an exciting, full bodied, heart stopping fortissimo High B flat. What passion! The particular recording of "Only a Rose" on this album has been regrettably absent from the catalogs for quite some time. It is a shame too, because Lanza makes this Vagabond King selection sound free and effortless like only Mario Lanza could. Lanza takes the listener through a guided tour, so speak, of truly the greatest singing the world has ever heard. After hearing the final selection, "You'll Never Walk Alone", there won't be a dry eye in the house. This, along with the "Don't Forget Me" Lanza CD, is one of the greatest single CD collections ever put together of Mario, or anyone else for that matter. Lanza was the greatest singer of all time and this is a must have album. The sooner you own this one, the better.

5 out of 5 stars Maude the Magician.......2007-06-11

I first heard Maude on the radio a few weeks ago while listening to Jonathan Schwartz. It didn't take long for me to realize that she is a special singer. When the song was over JS simply said "Maude Maggart". The song was Cole Porter's "Looking at You" from Maude's "Look for the Silver Lining" CD. Because I had never heard of Maude but knew I wanted to hear that voice again, I kept repeating her name to myself so I'd remember it (no pen in the car, you see). I believe I've trained my memory in this desperate way only once before-after hearing the then unknown to me Audra McDonald. Well, I bought Maude's CD and it's great. Unlike the previous reviewer, I do not find her voice "stunning". It's a small though highly expressive voice that is by turns innocently joyful, gently humorous, sweetly seductive, or hauntingly plaintive. Every song on the CD is a winner, written at a time when popular songs could be, and often were, literate as well as rhythmically and harmonically interesting. So find a cozy room and dim the lights. Then listen to "Love for Sale" or "Stardust" and be utterly beguiled.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Voice.......2007-02-22

This is an amazing CD. Maude Maggart's voice is clear and beautiful and takes center stage in all its glory. I play this at work and everyone who comes in asks about the singer. The songs are wonderful, and I have recommended this CD to everyone I know.

Lost gem of the early 90s. Every song is fine especially Valentine. Get it!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Nils Album With The Help Of Some Friends.......2005-02-05

Being made after Nils' tours with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, Silver Lining features many of the artists that Nils worked with. Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, and Levon Helm, all lend their talents to this disc, all of whom worked with Nils on the All-Starr tour. Add to that Clarence Clemons (also on the tour), and Bruce Springsteen, and you get a star studded line up. Now, Nils doesn't really need the help as he's an amazing guitarist and vocalist, but the star power is nice to hear. Though I'm not sure if it was his intent, this album takes the listener through a range of emotions. The song

"Silver Lining" isn't anything to overtly special, but serves as a nice opener.

"Valentine" is an absolutely beautiful song strengthened by the presence of Bruce Springsteen on backing vocals. Their voices mesh very well together, and the song is amplified by a tremendous guitar solo coda from Nils. From there we go to

"Walkin' Nerve". Not a very complicated song, it's lyrically smart, features the rhythm drumming of Ringo Starr, and some good licks from Nils.

"Live Each Day" and "Sticks And Stones" are good rockers from Nils, though they take a bit of time to pick up in intensity.

"Trouble's Back" is a very angy and bitter song, one of the few I've heard about seeking some revenge on an ex. The star line up on this track helps to serve it very well with Clarence Clemons and Levon Helm really making themselves apparent. And again, Nils plays the heck out of his guitar.

"Little Bit O' Time" was in Nils catalogue of songs for quite some time, and finally put it onto a studio album here. It's a touching song, good rhythm to it, heartwarming lyrics, not a showcase of talent though, just a smooth listening experience.

"Bein' Angry" features Ringo Starr providing back up vocals. Yeah...seems a bit odd to me as well but it works. This song falls in line with the title track in not really standing out too much. It's a laid back transition into the next song...

"Gun & Run" very good song, with Levon Helm returning yet again to lend some of his vocal abilities and some harmonica playing. Very solid track overall.

"Girl In Motion" is the closer, and pretty much rounds out the emotional journey. The song may get you to squirt a tear or two, or just slightly depress you, either way it's a sad tale Nils weaves here.

Overall, an exceptional album, and many thanks to Nils for crafting such great music. If you get decide to buy this, you likely will not regret it. There's a mixture of songs on here that may not strike you the first time around, but repeat listenings will get them trapped in your head. Nils is a sorely under rated artist, and one of the greatest guitarists I've heard. Again, I should mention that though he gets some help from other musicians, even without them this would still be a tremendous CD.

3 out of 5 stars Girl In Motion.......2004-06-02

I'm not a fan of most of the the rockin'/blusey songs on this CD, which makes up the majority of the disc, HOWEVER the album is more than worth getting for the two stand out tracks: "Valentine" (with Bruce Springsteen on guest vocals) and "Girl in Motion". The latter being a song in a league all its own.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2004-04-27

I have to admit, being a Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band fan, I got this to hear 'Valentine', on which Bruce sings background vocals. While the combination of Bruce and Nils and awesome lyrics makes for a beautiful song, there are some others here not to be ignored. For a simple, 10 track album, I think it really shines. 'Girl in Motion' is very lovely and 'Trouble's Back' is a great, bluesy tune. The guitar work on 'Sticks and Stones' is fantastic.

    4 out of 5 stars Intense.......1999-04-02

If you caught any of Nils Lofgren's appearances on the Howard Stern show, you know the rock guitarist is one intense guy. SILVER LINING reflects that, music, lyrics and all. When Nils is in love ("Valentine") it's lovely; in hate ("Trouble's Back") or self-hate ("Walkin' Nerve"), be glad his hands are around a guitar and not your throat. Includes guest vocals by Bruce Springsteen on "Valentine" and Ringo Starr on "Bein' Angry"; Ringo also drums the heck out of it on "Walkin' Nerve." Bravo, Nils!

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2003-12-03

I received my copy of Hanukkah... and all the Jazz today.
What wonderful and refreshing renditions of familiar Hanukkah tunes. My husband enjoyed it so much he wanted to take it to his office and listen to it there also. This is destined to become one of my favorite holiday CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Hanukkah themes on solo piano.......2002-12-03

Picture this: On a cold, snowy night in December, you and your significant other go out to your favorite club together. It's a cozy little local place, with mellow patrons and an excellent piano player in the background as you walk in. You share a drink together... and suddenly you notice that, instead of the ubiquitous variations on Xmas carols heard everywhere else, THIS pianist is doing elaborate jazz interpretations of Hannukkah tunes! That's exactly what this CD is -- a delightful concert on solo piano that goes beyond "party music" to create an atmosphere that is an interesting blend of Jewish music and American jazz.
