At a time when popular music has been micro-marketed to the far side of ad nauseam, Declan MacManus, a.k.a. Elvis Costello, has traded on his reputation as the brightest songwriter to emerge from the new wave era to foster any number of delightful, cross-genre/generation musical surprises, including soundtracks and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, jazz artist Roy Nathanson, and songwriting legend Burt Bacharach. The latest fruit of that generous, insatiably curious artistic spirit is this elegant partnership with Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter. Though an admitted pop novice, Otter couldn't have picked a better confederate than Costello, an artist whose taste in songs has seldom been tainted by trend.

Together, they weave material from disparate sources--including a slate of compelling Costello material, a pair of Brian Wilson's evocative "Pet Sounds" confessionals, a Tom Waits song from Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart (oddly, though effectively, coupled in medley with McCartney's "Junk"), an Abba song, and the Beatles' "For No One"--into a musical tapestry of stately power and grace. Costello sparingly uses his voice as seasoning throughout, though his masterful touch is everywhere. Otter's novice pop singing reveals an easy knack for jazz phrasing that should tempt further explorations and a warmth that belies the rigidity that's so often a byproduct of classical training. Most gratifying of all, this album ultimately achieves what's become one of the loftiest plateaus in Pop music: common ground. --Jerry McCulley

Who would pair Costello and an opera singer?? Elvis, and somehow it works. I really love the tone and moodiness of it and lyrics that talk about love and life, failure and success. It's soulful, in a contemplative way, music for those tucked away, rainy days .

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this CD!.......2005-09-01

Finally, an opera singer who knows how to channel her Classical training into a sound that is, as one critic aptly described it, "what pop singers would sound like if they could actually sing"! Although Elvis Costello does not join Ms. von Otter very often in the vocals, when he does they harmonize beautifully. With great melodies (some beautiful, some catchy) and sensitive (but not sappy) lyrics, this album makes a fine addition to any CD collection.

3 out of 5 stars Costello Partners with Hubris and Yields Variable Results.......2005-05-08

Having just heard Elvis Costello's masterful collaboration with Burt Bacharach, "Painted from Memory", for the first time this past month, I had high hopes for this equally unusual partnership with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter released in 2001. This time, however, Costello acts as arranger and producer, and it is von Otter who is front and center on vocals. She is among the most revered of singers on the opera and recital stages, and she has impressed me in the past, in particular, with her Dejanira in the 2002 Marc Minkowski-led performance of Handel's "Hercules", among many other roles she has embodied. Here she is called upon to be a pop chanteuse, and while the beauty of her voice is inarguable in any setting, her ability to interpret the diverse lyrics in these songs is far more debatable. This is where a Marianne Faithfull, a Blossom Dearie or even a Joni Mitchell could capture more of the underlying feeling with a fraction of the vocal power von Otter can provide but with twice the nuance. There is a rather sterile sameness to the performances here, somewhat jazz-inflected in a cocktail lounge manner at times and at other times, rather morose and dirge-like.

Take, for example, her rendition of Brian Wilson's "Don't Ask (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" from the legendary "Pet Sounds" album. It moves so glacially that it actually extricates the romantic subtext almost surgically. The same can be said for Jessie Mae Robinson's "The Other Woman", which has at least Magnus Persson's vibraphone to provide relief from the tedium. She's better on the other "Pet Sounds" classic, "You Still Believe in Me", where she cannily soars with the chorus, though Costello damages it by adding some odd, muffled rapping in the background. Ironically, it is on the Costello compositions where the recording most noticeably flails. The opener "No Wonder" starts as a "Greensleeves"-like madrigal and then turns into Beatlesque pop; "Baby Plays Around" seems to suffer from exhaustion by all parties; the two Fleshquartet collaborations, "Rope" and "Just a Curio", sound somewhat like extraterrestrial hymns done in a series of minor keys; and the closing title track, "For the Stars" includes peppy, Beach Boys-sounding harmonies which escape her grasp. In fact, "Just a Curio" would have been a more appropriate title for this entire recording.

On the other hand, the Gallic flavor of Benny Andersson's accordion effectively informs her rendition of Tom Waits' "Broken Bicycles", which melds perfectly with Costello's vocal on Paul McCartney's "Junk". Speaking of Andersson, a fellow Scandinavian, von Otter admirably covers a piano-led ABBA ballad, "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room". She also displays a meticulously casual bounce on Lennon-McCartney's "For No One", though it stops rather abruptly. Von Otter acquits herself surprisingly well on the jazzy "Shamed into Love", written by another unlikely duo, Costello and Rubén Blades, and performed as almost a smokier variation of Bacharach's "Alfie". And speaking of Bacharach, she does a nice turn on the lovely "This House Is Empty Now" from the 1998 Bacharach-Costello disc. Costello and von Otter are masters of their craft, but I think some of the collaborations reflect simply irreconcilable differences. While Costello seems to have an insatiable desire to expand musically, his hubris here appears to constrain the often preternatural vocal skill von Otter displays on the opera and recital stage. Consequently, what we have here is a nice album, a generous one with eighteen tracks, that doesn't seem to capitalize on either contributor's talent fully.

1 out of 5 stars what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?.......2004-04-22

Nothing's funny about this boring duo. I picked this up FREE at my library and it didn't take me too many tracks to see why it was donated. The musical arrangements are hapless and dull, and her voice is Dion without the Vegas power finale. Come to think of it, the lyrics remind me of Dion; they are as saccharine as anything Dion has ever sung. I wasted a blank CD on this limp, sleepy pairing of two otherwise good artists.

1 out of 5 stars No life in her (pop) art.......2004-03-15

I am a big fan of both artists and wanted very much for this combination to work. It avoids the traditional trap of "oversinging" the pop material. But a few years after its release, in these American Idol era, is that really such a terror for pop music any more? So-called oversinging seems pretty popular these days!

The big problem is that von Otter has not found a way to communicate any emotion in this scaled-down form of singing. All her classical techniques are stripped away, and there's nothing to replace them. Sure, her voice is gorgeous, but it sounds exactly the same no matter what the lyrical content. The songs could have been made up of nonsense syllables for all the emotional life she communicates.

Deeply disappointing - but someone, somewhere, will figure out how to bring classically trained singers to the wonderful pop song repertoire that has been composed over the past 50 years. Elvis may very well be the person to do it, but not on this album.

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11

Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Jason Howard does the Hollywood musical--and very well!!.......2000-10-30

This is an amazing CD. I recommend it especially for those who love Hollywood and Broadway musicals of the 1940's and 50's like "Oklahoma", "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Jason Howard is a wonderfully talented baritone whose singing rivals that of Howard Keel and Gordon MacRae, whose songs he sings on this disc. Every song is well done, and sung with appropriate feeling. Though recorded in a studio, you'd think that "Anything You Can Do," from "Annie Get Your Gun" was from a live theatrical performance, there is so much zest in the interaction between Howard and his female partner. The selections from "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are particularly welcome, as they are seldom recorded. I can't praise this disc enough!

5 out of 5 stars Who Saw This Coming??.......2007-04-14

I don't usually take the time to write a music review, and typically find the "five star parade" for any piece of junk pretty tiring. But I have to sound off about this release. This is the first disc in years that I have just listened to over and over again. And it's by SUSAN COWSILL of Cowsills fame?? Who'da thunk it?!

I have the first two Continental Drifters CD's and noted and enjoyed Susan's contributions on those releases, and I knew she sang backup for Dwight Twilley back in the day, which is why I checked this one out. That didn't in any way prepare me for this, though. This is absolutely excellent and the best "roots pop" I've heard in years.

The four "Wiwoma" song fragments neatly split the album into three sections. The first "section" is damn near flawless, and if there was any justice would make Susan a star. The rockin and catchy "I Know You Know" should have been a monster radio hit, and lilting "Palm Of My Hand" would have made a great follow up, with its interesting melody and great background vocals.

The middle section is a slow trilogy that deals with mortality and the passage of time. "Nanny's Song" is simply the most devastating and tear inducing song about the fear of death that I have ever heard. The cover of "Who Know Where The Time Goes" is the album's first minor stumble. It fits thematically, but does not approach Sandy Denny's/Fairport Convention's definitive original version. (With the quality of the songwriting on this album, why bother with a cover?)

OK, this thing drags a little toward the end (or maybe those songs just haven't taken hold). But I would give this 5 stars based only on the first half of the album. It's that good. I love Susan's "no diva" voice and particularly the backing vocals that weave their way in and out of some of the songs are stunning.

I highly recommend this. Susan Cowsill should be a big star, and if she released this 20 years ago I believe she would be...unfortunately I fear the record companies have no idea how to market a mature middle aged woman's "debut".

And there are people who really care about the "American Idol" winners when there is stuff like this out there waiting to be discovered! Go figure.

    5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2006-05-17

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Susan Cowsill fan! She's as talented a songwriter as her brothers and can deliver her life in songs with passion. My current favorite is "Mr. Everything" but "White Light of Winter" is truly amazing. Her cover of Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" is perfect for reflection and wonder. Susan's voice is in a class by itself and it's #1 all the way! It's a MUST LISTEN for anyone with a liking for pop, rock, zydeco, and ballads...Susan does it all.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Cowsill Drives One Home.......2006-02-16

Susan Cowsill's "Just Believe It" is a real gem and is a must buy. It offers end to end smoothness, soul searching, and introspect rare in recordings these days. The production is very good and Susan's voice is excellent.

Susan Cowsill is one of those rare artists who can take events of her life and turn it into great songs without sounding self serving or preachy with "Nanny's Song" and "I Know you Know" being prime examples of this.

She blows away many other female artists in her vocal ability including Sheryl Crow. I tend to feel the tonality of her voice compares to Stevie Nicks without the things about Stevie Nicks's voice I never liked, with Susan's range and inflextion being superior.

It seems the songs on "Just Believe It" were gathered over a long time span which, in the case of this CD, helps garner the strength of the release as opposed to many who release a recording with seemingly nothing in particular to say. The range of emotions felt on "Just Believe It" covers the whole spectrum.

I rate this CD a Five out of Five.

A companion to this CD would be the Cowsills' excellent "Global" available privately from Robin Records.

    4 out of 5 stars wide-ranging, diffuse.......2006-01-08

Susan Cowsill certainly is a survivor. Who would have believed she would be bobbing up with a debut album, forty years after the Summer of Love and "The Rain, the Park, and Other Things"?

Susan, it seems, stored a lot of songs away in her attic in preparation for this album... it really covers a lot of ground stylistically! At times it can seem very ambitious (it has a repeated theme running through it, like Willie Nelson's "Red-Headed Stranger") and at other times it can seem almost off the cuff. The album balances upbeat alt-country anthems like "Palm of My Hand" and "Just Believe It" against rather dreary imitations of Lucinda Williams territory, like "Talkin", and the albums lowpoint, "Crazy".

Cowsill is possessed of a good but unspectacular voice, which she can shade so it sounds at times like Williams, or Sheryl Crow, and there's even a touch of Karen Carpenter's poppiness.

She's better when she's upbeat. "I Know You Know" is a chip off the Breeders' block, with it's roaring ditzy guitars, and "Just Believe It" is an infectious country shuffle. "Nanny's Song" is memorable, but "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" is very ordinary compared with the majesty of Sandy Denny's original.

The bonus tracks--"Mr.Everything" and "Don't Worry Baby" outshine a few of the downtempo offerings.

If Cowsill had been a little more judicious, this could have been a five-star debut. Susan drove her brand new album all over the map... but it still has a lot of sparkle, and worthily stands up alongside other alt-country contenders like Kathleen Edwards.

5 out of 5 stars Good Ole Down South Music.......2005-11-26

Susan Cowsill's solo effort "Just Believe It" is hard to categorize. When I listen to one song, I want to say it's pop, but then I listen to another and it reminds me of bluegrass country music. You'll have to be the final judge. While listening to the CD, I felt as if I was transported down south. The acoustics were phenomenal. Out of 14 tracks, I liked at least 5. Tracks number 4, 5, 7, 8, and 13. "I Know You Know," "Nanny's Song" and "White Light of Winter" stand out the most to me.--Shelia M Goss, BellaOnline Women in Music

5 out of 5 stars Great sounding accompaniment piece to Pet Sounds.......2005-07-17

This album is great to listen to if you, like me, have listened to Pet Sounds millions of times and want a new variation on it. The Angry String Quartet does a great job recreating this amazing work of art, and brings to light the orchestral genius of Brian Wilson's musical and vocal arrangements. The Quartet extend most of the songs, and it is a bit awkward getting used to at first ( having listened to the original songs so many times), but in the end, it is a pleasant change.

"The String Quartet Tribute to the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds" is an interesting, and ultimately, satisfying listen. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to hear Pet Sounds in a different light or would like to understand why so many people have found Brian Wilson's music to be utter genius...and just about anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic solo debut.......2005-10-07

Well I love it. Cowsill does have a distinctive voice, but I think it's soulful, expressive and effective. In a way this is somewhat like a poppier Lucinda Williams (who sings memorable harmonies on the achingly gorgeous "Nanny's Song"). There are some
references to Continental Drifters & even The Cowsills, and a bit of pop sheen compared to say, the Drifters. But okay with me. What I like too is the sense of 'hard won' optimism that is here overall, even if many of the songs are also ballsy and realistic. Her dramatic read of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" is one of the greatest I think-- only Sandy Denny herself can compete, and she
sang it rather differently. I think Susan stakes out a significant solo place here-- roots
        rock/folk/pop with heart.

5 out of 5 stars Just Believe It is Unbelievably Good.......2005-09-11

Little sister is not so little anymore; neither is her sound. Really, really top-notched stuff here from the distaff side of the still performing and recording Cowsill clan. Wonderful vocals from wonderful lyrics makes something magical. My favorite track is Who Knows Where the Time Goes, but from Palm of my Hand to Nanny's Song, Christmas Time to the title track, Just Believe It, this CD is truely a great listen.

5 out of 5 stars JUST ORDER IT!.......2005-05-09

Probably the best CD of the year & definitely the best "debut." Offhand, I like "Palm Of My Hand," "Just Believe It," "Gazebo," and especially "White Light" as the hits for the radio (Just Play It) -- but, the WHOLE CD is TERRIFIC. If it's possible to wear out a CD, I'll do it to this one! THANK YOU SUSAN! (may we have some more?)

5 out of 5 stars Music As Music SHOULD Be.......2005-05-09

I don't know what to say, this is simply one of the best singer/songwriters in the world today, finally making her solo debut. You will be amazed at the range of emotions expressed here by Susan and the great supporting musicians surrounding her. It will make you think. It will make you dance. It will make you think about dancing. Do yourself a favor and get it, and get one for a friend. PASS IT ON! And see Susan and the band live if you ever get the chance.
It's a celebration of all things GOOD in music! I know you know what I'm talking about.
There's nobody more deserving of success and recognition than Susan Cowsill.

        5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful!.......2005-05-08

An incredible first album from an incredibly gifted songwriter. Susan has been in the music business since she was a child....who knew she had these words in her! I'm SO glad she's sharing them! Well worth a listen! A wonderful album.
