Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.ca
The difference can be heard right away: ten seconds of strum-my, hammering guitar. It could be the Strokes, the Vines, or Jet, but then, in comes Jann Arden's familiar vocals, albeit amidst a very uptempo backing band. As Jann herself describes it, the disc is "teeming with a really joyful spirit and full of bliss and optimism," quite a statement from the woman who wrote "Insensitive" and "Sorry for Myself." Indeed, Arden has a great gift of capturing aching beauty and a heart's deep hurt, but it is also refreshing to hear the new CD’s first single, "Where No One Knows Me" and feel the riding-with-the-top-down positive vibe: There are also some sonic departures as well; Arden's whispered, reigned in vocals on "Life Is Sweet," with all it’s hushed-ness, could, given a slightly different melody, be a contemporary, downtempo number straight off the U.K. charts. Equally delicate and also a treat is the CD's final cut, a new version of her previous hit "I Would Die For You", this time as a duet with fellow Canadian singing legend Sarah McLachlan. There is no question that this record is a bit of a departure for Jann and her band; that said, it is just different enough to keep it fresh and interesting both for the singer and her fans. Thankfully, the trademark goodness remains intact, and this will likely be a loved disc by her longtime fans, and possibly a new introduction to the unconverted. --Denise Sheppard

From Amazon.ca

Perfectly titled Uncover Me is a collection of nine cover songs and one original that allows Arden to show how emotion-driven music has influenced her along the way. The disc kicks off with "Bring the Boys Home" (originally a 1971 anti-Vietnam war song) that is especially moving with its refrain, "bring 'em back alive." The '70s hit "Peace Train" by Yusuf Islam (a.k.a. Cat Stevens) also delivers another powerful message in a gentle melody. True to Arden's musical nature, there are a handful of melancholic tracks, including the aptly wistful version of Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" and a moving, traditional take on the Carpenters' "Solitaire." The disc's one original, "Counterfeit Heart" is a definite standout of the slower numbers, one that seems awash with a '40s croon and ache. That track aside, the strongest parts of the CD come in the form of the sassy female-fronted melodies that bring out the best of Arden's style. Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," Pat Benetar's "Love Is a Battlefield," and Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man" each allow Arden to infuse a little extra zest and oomph in her vocals. The only downside? That in choosing the songs, Arden didn't pick a number with a little more bite to it, such as Heart's "Crazy on You" or Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation," which would have allowed her to shake off the softness, if only for a while. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Different covers album........2007-03-07

Some people like to do things the easy way. Jann Arden is not one of them.
Consider her latest disc "Uncover Me".
For many artists, a covers album is a cop-out -- a set of tried-and-true tunes tossed off to plug the gap and fatten the wallet between discs.
But not Jann. And not for want of trying, either.
The Canadian singer-songwriter reportedly cut a disc of croony standards, but scrapped it as too downbeat (and coming from ballad queen Arden, that's really saying something).
Instead, she regrouped and recorded the fittingly titled "Uncover Me", a collection of '60s and '70s pop tunes that give us a revealing glimpse into her early musical loves and influences.
Listening to her glistening pop-rock versions of classics like Janis Ian's "At Seventeen", Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", The Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin'" and Karen Carpenter's "Solitaire", you can picture her sitting alone in her teenage bedroom after school, strumming an acoustic guitar and singing along with her turntable.
The timeless messages of Freda Payne's "Bring the Boys Home" and Cat Stevens' "Peace Train" resonate strongly without seeming heavy-handed, while her somewhat tongue-in-cheek cover of Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man" is just a kick.
Most of the tunes are pretty faithfully rendered, with the exception of Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield", which is recast as a shadowy ballad.
But no matter the setting, everything possesses Arden's usual undercurrent of melancholy -- even Petula Clark's sugar-spun ditty "Downtown" sounds ironic and resigned in her hands.
After all, Jann knows that forgetting all your troubles and cares is easier said than done.
Lovely, sensitive, beautiful!

4 out of 5 stars Arden "Uncovers" Gems.......2007-03-07

Prime Cuts: Solitaire, Downtown, You're So Vain

To designate Arden as a one-hit wonder with her emotionally ravaging top 20 smash "Insensitive" is a caricature. Across the border on the 49th parallel, this chanteuse has been amassed with 8 Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys) and she was also the receipt of the esteemed 2000 Prairie Awards Songwriter of the Year. However, for "Uncover Me," her ninth studio album, Arden has decided to give her writing kilt a rest. Save for one newly penned tune, this album finds Arden covering a wide array of music from Cat Stevens to the Carpenters to Pat Benator to Carly Simon to Pertula Clark to Dusty Springfield. Naturally such an adventurous excursion lend itself to being one of the most vocally challenging endeavors Arden has had ever committed on record. Unable to divorce herself totally from the originals, she does vocally import Karen Carpenter's vulnerability, Carly Simon's spitefulness, and her own skeptical bite, making Arden a much richer composite vocalist.

If a song could cut the heart like a stiletto it has to be the Carpenters' "Solitaire." A probable biography of Karen Carpenter's vacuous quest for true love, this piano-based ballad finds Arden cribbing Carpenter's forlorn and despairing purrs with great effect. Pertula Clark's "Downtown," though traffics with a carefree disposition, guises an ache of loneliness where the song's protagonist tries to forget her pain vis-à-vis window shopping. Arden's new composition "Counterfeit Heart," though not as melodramatic as the aforementioned tracks, is still a heart wrenching ballad of misplaced trust and broken promises to which Arden conveys with mastery. Also, emotionally lacerating is Janis Ian's "At Seventeen," a song of struggling identity that still speaks today as it did over thirty years ago.

Not one to be victimized by life's circumstances, "You're So Vain" is the perfect "get even" type of a song that Arden performs with sass and attitude. While she sticks too close to Pat Benator's "Love is a Battlefield" that Arden veers dangerously close to being enmeshed into a Benator soundalike. Similarly, a couple of misfires comes in the form of songs that are more "inspirational" in nature. Cat Stevens' "Peace Train," despite being a well crafted song about world peace with those intricate spiritual/Biblical overtones, has been done to death. And sadly Arden adds nothing new to it. Likewise, "Bring Home the Boys," with its over-produced backing, somehow gags Arden's performance.

Nevertheless, as far as cover albums go, "Uncover Me," albeit some too obvious choices, is a well selected opus. Further, the highlight is Arden's interpretative skill: soaking up the best emotional nuances of the originals and adding her own razor-sharp affections, these paeans beget an unflinching realism that is hard to resist. After all these years of experience, Arden has triumphantly channeled her best into the articulation of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Singer Songwriter.......2006-01-29

For those of us that do not live in Canada, we have to say Jann Who?
I bought this album after it was suggested by Amazon.
Thank you!
For those of us who enjoy the having pretty girls sing to us this is a dream come true of a 11 year old album. I recently read an essay by one of my favorite writers, bemoaning the lack of Carol King, Carly Simon, kind of singer song writers in popular music today. I guess that only applies to everyone except Canada, as Jann Arden, Amanda Marshal etc, are making exactly the kind of music he (and I), miss on the radio today.
"Living Under June" is a top flight kind of album spanning from pop, ("Insensitive") to broody (I would Die For You), to bluesy Jazz, (It Looks Like Rain). Although her newer CD's are also very good, if you are new to Jann Arden, "Living Under June" is the Album to start with. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my All time FAVORITES.......2005-12-12

This is one of the Best CD's I have ever heard! I had to burn the original to keep it in perfect condition so I wouldn't wear it out... It has some of the best songs, one of my three favorites is from my favorite movie "Bed of Roses" the song "Insensitive"! No matter how many times I have listened to this CD, I really love it and have to sing along. I also really loved "Could I be your Girl?" and "Unloved". There is not one bad song on the whole CD. If you liked "Insensitive" you'll love the rest of the songs as well.

5 out of 5 stars On My Top 10 List.......2005-07-09

This CD is one of my all time favorites. this is the first one of Jann's that I got, loved it, bought more.

a secret, shhhh, I was "June" that Jann lived under, her apt in Canada was under mine - long ago - she changed it to June - cause Sally didn't rhyme with anything. so happy to have been an inspiration for that song!

the song - "Insensitive" is about the only one heard on US radio - which is a shame - lots of others are so good. but, in Canada, they get to hear a lot more of Jann. Luckily, my dear Norman and I live right by the border, so we get Canadian radio stations here.

we love the songs "Could I be Your Girl?", "Demolition Love", "Looking for it", "Good Mother", "I Would Die for You."

love it love it love it! play it over and over...

sultry, smooth, meaningful, bluesy, nice melody, nice rhythm, soft & sensual, sexy, lovely!

nice kissing music - hey guys - play it on a date - you may score!! of course, my Normal calls it "chick music" but he likes it too!

did I mention, I LOVE this CD? lol buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have it!.......2005-06-12

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2007-05-06

Love Jann Arden since the "Insensitive" song
This is a great addition and a very greatest hit.

4 out of 5 stars Great Tunes .......2007-01-04

I heard one of her songs (the old Ray Charles tune You Don't Know Me) and liked it so decided to check out her work. Found this CD and liked the reviews so bought it. I like most all the tracks. Really enjoy her voice and style. Looking to maybe pick up another of her albums. Did not much care for the way she did the 'live' version of Insensitive but the rest is great.

3 out of 5 stars This was an okay c.d........2006-08-01

If you have heard Jann's music before (like you own other c.d.s) this is not more extensive. The song selection is fair and they envoke personal meaning for her but I just didn't "feel" this one. That said Insensitive is just a wonderful classic and "Good Mother" nearly puts me in tears everytime I hear it. Otherwise this wasn't a MindBlowing cd for me.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!.......2003-08-27

I bought this CD only having heard Jann's older singles on the radio. And given that this was when I was still a kid, listening to my parents' soft rock stations, I couldn't appreciate the quality of Jann's music. But once I bought this CD, I saw it. These songs blow me away every time I listen to them. From the music, to the lyrics, I just get lost in the songs. They are so emotional- from the angry to the depressed to the happy to the jealous to... emotions I can't even decipher and understand. I was blown away with Jann's song writing abilities in this album. If you have ever even remotely liked one of her songs, then I'm sure you'll fall in love with the whole album. Jann is amazing, and doesn't receive as much recognition as she deserves in the music industry. This album shows her at her best.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-07-18

I was actually disappointed when I bought this CD. I already own "Living Under June" and thought it was great, so how could a greatest hits compilation not be great, too? I figured it would include all of the best songs on "Living Under June," plus all of her other great songs that I hadn't yet heard.

Unfortunately, I was wrong. There are only one or two songs on the CD that are not on "Living Under June" that I thought were any good, and I have to like a song an awful lot to buy an entire CD for just one or two songs. My advice would be to stick with buying "Living Under June," since that has some songs on it not included in this collection that are better than some that are included.

In a debut as striking and emotionally intense as that of Tori Amos, Arden's confessional style is best experienced as a private pleasure, but tracks like "Will You Remember Me," "The Way Things Are Going" and the stunning "I Would Die For You" make this a disc worth sharing. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-04-10

Canada has my favorite artists of all time: Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette and of course JANN ARDEN! This C.D. rox! She has a beautiful voice and it's very unique. I love all her C.D.s and this one is no exception, so you should buy it! My favorite song is "I would die for you". We Canadians are sooooo lucky to have her!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Touching Music, but Bad Singing.......2002-01-24

I bought this cd because I wanted some more music akin to Sarah McLachlan--mellow, touching, beautiful. I think that this cd succeeds on the first two counts, but not the last. I really want to like this cd, I like the music, but her voice is absolutely annoying. She is *constantly* singing under pitch. On every song. Whenever one of her songs comes up on my winamp playlist, I find that I immediately skip to another song because her voice is so grating.

Instead of this album, I would recommend Amanda Marshall's debut cd if you are looking for the same things I was.

5 out of 5 stars Another Canadian!!.......2002-01-04

They are everywhere these days. And if more of them are like this artist I say this country should join us. She is great and this album is a fine example of our neighbors to the north.

4 out of 5 stars Very thoughtful music..........2001-07-25

This is a collection of very mello, soulful songs. The type of music you listen to when your in a mello mood. I also feel they are very orginal. Tracks 2 8 9 & 11 are my favorites. Out of all 4 of Ms. Ardens Cd's "Happy" is by far my favorite... but time for Mercy makes you think about the more simple things in life...the type of things we take for granted. I see her in concert whenever she comes to town. I wish she would perform more tracks from this CD. Jann if your reading this...I can't wait for the next one. Don't keep your fans waiting to long!

5 out of 5 stars Canadian, eh!.......2000-12-22

I love all of Jann Ardens work. I think she is a truly talented singer/songwriter/musician. This album is a terrific album to play while relaxing and thinking. All of the songs have fairly sad subject matter, and although she can be a bit repetitive with the lyrics, nevertheless, most songs have a meditative quality to them. Some of the songs may take at least a couple of listens before they sink in, but that's always the way with the best music. But once they have, they will stay with you, and you will love each one.

4 out of 5 stars A great return to form..............2005-11-27

thought Jann could never top "Living under June", wouldn't really want her to repeat the same style but this new collection finds the Canadian song stylist dishing out some
uptempo grooves along side her trademark melancholy heartaches,
but what makes this set stand out is her willingness to explore
some new sounds without chasing away fans who expect to hear
familiar. It nice to hear favorite artists expand there sound and come up with a gem like this, much like the new Bonnie
Raitt "Souls Alike" the heart and soul is still left to the
music but some fresh air is thrown into the mix to challange
listeners who come to expect the same old, same old, Jann Arden
continues to stand out with her one of a kind style.

4 out of 5 stars 5-star disc, one star demerit for frustrating, unreadable album packaging.......2005-07-11

Truth be told, I was so indifferent to Jann Arden's last couple of discs that I nearly sat this one out. Which would have been a pity because as many armchair Amazon reviewers have pointed out here, Jann's latest is one of her most consistently satisfying since Living Under June. But the CD booklet is about the most user UNfriendly design for listeners such as myself who like to scan the lines of verse while the disc is playing. Lines of text in all different directions, running this way and that. Printed in colors that bleed into the colors of the page. (In other words, not enough contrast in colors.) I mean, why even BOTHER to reprint the lyrics if they're going to be unreadable? Why even BOTHER to reprint the lyrics if they're going to appear in a microscopic point size? (And I'm in my thirties with perfect vision!) The front cover is beautiful, but whose idea was it to list the song titles (the so-called "stacking order") in a circle on the back cover? Easy reference? Nope.

Here's a tip for anyone still reading this: I bought this from Canada's Amazon (Amazon.ca) because it's a whole lot cheaper. When you convert the Canadian dollar to the greenback, it came out to a little less than 10 bucks, versus 28 here. Even with shipping, it was cheaper at Amazon.ca than buying it as an import. So I guess Canada's good for more than just cheap prescription drugs!

5 out of 5 stars Jann Arden...artist supreme........2005-06-21

If you want to reflect on life and all of its roller coster rides it puts us through then Jann Arden is to the rescue. Her music not only entertains but makes you think about your life. I just love this woman's sense of humour and honesty. Most of all I love how she opens her life to us. I catch her in concert when she visits Windsor Ontario. A few years back I yelled at her to perform her lovely remake of the Ray Charles "You don't know me." I think it was him who performed it. She did it happily. I cried like a slobbering baby. Everytime she sings it, it brings me to tears.

While "Happy?" Is still my favorite Jann Arden disk, I do not think I have ever heard a bad recording from her.

A true artist in every form.

5 out of 5 stars After all this time...........2005-06-15

It's remarkable Jann Arden has come up with such a fresh album. Her writing, singing and performing skills have not staled as the years have passed but rather she keeps ascending to new heights. This album is like a splash of sparkling water--refreshing, clean and cooling. The songs are instantly infectious, the lyrics deep and meaningful, the melodies insinuating and hypnotic. And of course the singing is flavorful and
singular. Jann's major attribute is intelligence, enhanced by high standards, courageous honesty and unending originality. This is an album for listening over and over and over. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Great mix of songs and laughs............2005-12-17

Can't think of another Canadian(besides Joni Mitchell & Neil Young)with as much talent as this excellent singer/songwriter/
comedian. Blessed with such a strong voice that bends with her
moody songs and soars and bleeds, no small feat. Jann Arden
songs have been in and out of my cd players for years, she rarely ever dissapoints, and on this live outing she is spectacular in the way she mixes the laughs through some very
funny strange tales and the way she connects with the crowds
and then the delivery of these classy songs. Jann really needs
to work her magic here in the states, its not surprising to
me she had been working for years with some of those folks
that made Bonnie Raitts recordings so special all during the
90's(Ed Cherney). Sure Jann Arden works that melancholy side
but I really don't know of any performer that is so gifted at
doing it this way, she writes such beautiful, sad songs about
life and relationships but she can rock when she wants, and talk and tell some really funny stories. Shes doing a better
job of mixing her styles on the lastest(2005) release, I look
forward to seeing her live one day.
This is a fine collection, don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs & stories.......2003-01-17

I love this CD. I've never been to one of Jann's concerts, so this gives a good idea of what they're like. The songs sound fantastic with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and her stories that she tells before some of the songs are so funny. I also love the interaction with the players in the symphony. I do wish the sound when she's speaking was at the same volume as the sound when she's singing, but I've noticed that on many live albums so I wasn't surprised that I had to turn up the volume during the speaking segments.
Overall, a lot of fun.

If you like Jann Arden, you'll also like Dar Williams.

3 out of 5 stars Rocky start, smooth finish.......2003-01-07

I saw this concert in Windsor, Ontario, and Jann had the same sound problems with the opening song that night, as she does on this live recording from Vancouver. The mix is way off in spots, and the vocals are all but lost just pass the three minute mark. Why this wasn't corrected in post-production is even more troublesome. Jann is much better than this recording, and buyers deserve better quality for the hefty $[money] pricetag. Fortunately things get much better quickly, and the rest of the release is very good. Great entertainment for fans and newcomers.

5 out of 5 stars Jann Arden--best performer EVER.......2002-11-17

Okay, I'm kind of cheating here...I don't have this CD but I saw one of her shows in Winnipeg with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra...and it is simply the best concert I have ever attended. Jann's music is beautiful...she's the 'Queen of Broken-hearted Love Songs' and she simply creates beautiful music. Now add some excellent arrangements on a part of the orchestra, and you've got a magical atmosphere to many of her songs. While there are times that the part of her regular band that's present drowns out the symphony, all songs are beautiful. 'I Would Die for You' was my favorite with the strings, but so many of them are good. The only problem is that this CD is really a repackaged greatist Hits CD...not containing some of the non-singles that she performed, like Time for Mercy...and I said I liked I Would Die for You was my favorite, I must correct myself...this version of 'Hangin' By a Thread' was amazing, creating a lifetime of love for that song. Even 'Thing For You' isn't included.

But enough about her music, Jann Arden creates such great performances because of her humour, and wit and...everything...The way she relentlessly tells stories and makes jokes about her parents, and how she plays off what the crowd does...Jann Arden will make you laugh, no doubt about it and it will not detract from the music at all. If you ever have the chance to see her live...DO IT. It is the least regrettable thing you can do.

I knew from the instant the opening of 'Thing For You' began that a CD from this symphony tour she was on would be created in Heaven. There's no doubt that Jann Arden is one of the best singers in the world. Check this CD out, and you'll find that she's probably the best performer in teh world too.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2002-11-14

This is, strangely, Jann Arden's most thrilling album, strange because it is so divorced from what she has done otherwise in her remarkable body of work. To thunderous accompaniments which surge and ebb like a sonic ocean, she magnificently samples her large repertoire mesmerizingly. Then, between songs, she offers a bawdy, naughty series of stories and comments which prove Canadians are not as reserved, proper and controlled as reputation might have, judging by the hysterical laughter from the audience (and orchestra). A mystical, magical singer and songwriter, Arden lays claim to true greatness here. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Soul Searching.......2002-12-01

Jann Arden released this album in 1997 in Canada. It might not have been as widely accepted as her breakthrough 1994 album LIVING UNDER JUNE but HAPPY? is still an album worth talking about. Sometimes I listen and I wonder if she has been inside my head, as she projects so many feelings and emotions I have had before. By far my favorite cut here is "Wishing That", a song I can deeply relate to, about the longing to have someone to love you, and the depths of which you would go to acheive that. "The Sound Of" is another great song, the album's first single, about one night stands. "Hangin' By A Thread" is another incredibly personal song for me here, she just delivers it so heartbreakingly. Same goes for "Weeds" and "To Sir With Love". Many find her music depressing, I think of it as real and just no holds barred. She sings from the depths of her soul and does not hold back. Other highlights include "Leave Me Now", "Saved", and more. If you liked any of her other albums, this is definately a safe bet.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Story Teller!.......2002-08-28

Very good content - excellent story teller type music. Ethereal, calming, and altogether totally enjoyable! Very talented song writing, and great musical adaptation.

5 out of 5 stars What A Ride!!..........2001-12-09

If music has the ability to transport your heart and soul then Happy? will serve that purpose. It is rare that an album will take you from the first song to the last without having you reach for the skip button on the CD player. This album will keep you listening all the way through as you are taken on Arden's emotional rollercoaster.

5 out of 5 stars Arden gets Better, and better, and better, and better..........2001-10-19

At the time of its release, Happy? woudl have to be her best CD to date, but that was toppled when Blood Red Cherry came out. But Happy? Is a pre-curssor to Cherry. Happy? deals with a lot of the same things that Cherry did a large out-look on life. Except, while Happy? deals with relationships and love, Cherry deals with life.

Jann Arden keeps growin as an artist. Her music is more mature, and more folky, almsot, then anything she's ever done. Buy this CD, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!!.......2001-06-13

I was never a big fan of women musicians, but Jann Arden has changed that. After hearing the song Insensitive from the movie Bed of Roses, I was extremely impressed with her sound. Then I started dating a girl who had the Living Under June CD, and got hook. That was over a year ago, we are still dating and I like Jann Arden more and more. I bought Happy for my girlfriend for Valentine's Day, and we were both thoroughly impressed. There is not a bad song on this CD, which is one reason I am always listening to this CD. If you liked Living Under June, you will not be disappointed with Happy?.

4 out of 5 stars Real Emotions.......2006-06-16

When this song first came out, I didn't care too much about it. But one day I just happened to listen to the lyrics and it really struck a cord. I even recorded the song. This is what you listen after you've had your heart borken. I haven't heard this song in years and I rarely hear it on the radio these days. It's a very good song.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have For The Broken-Hearted!.......2000-09-15

Wow! The first few times I heard the single "Insensitive" on the radio I was just listening on auto-pilot...I thought, "pretty song". Then I REALLY listened to the words one day shortly after a very bad break-up...The artist's sad irony and obvious pain was a catharsis. You know those songs on the radio that seem to be written just for you? This is definitely one of them! I only wish I could have telegramed it, bitter sarcasm and all, to that heartbreaker....

3 out of 5 stars Incensitive.......2000-06-22

I love this song. It makes me think a lot about life. She is really putting her heart and soul into this song. I can really understand what she is saying and where she is coming from. Too many of us get hurt by people's actions and it's certain types of songs that help us through it. This is one of those.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2000-06-18

The combination of bitterness and sadness in the artist's voice in tandem with the scathing lyrics makes this a MUST HAVE single. I haven't heard this song on the radio in forever, and when it randomly popped into my head today, I knew I had to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Jann's back!.......2004-06-03

you're a fool for not having this albumn, go get it!
she's sooo underated....

5 out of 5 stars Terribly Overlooked.......2002-06-03

Jann's 2000 album BLOOD RED CHERRY is significantly more upbeat and accessible than 1997's introspective and somewhat dark album HAPPY?. Not to say its a bad thing but it's good to see all sides of the artist, and Jann has many dimensions. There are a few changes in her music, this one relies more on textured beats and musical arrangements in that type of order, and it creates a really pleasant sound that works well with her voice. The album is still as personal as ever though, and unfortunately this album is often overlooked in the shadow of LIVING UNDER JUNE, this one wasn't very well received by the public, which is a shame. If anything, its just as good as LIVING UNDER JUNE. My favorite track is the emotional song "Another Human Being" which has some really thought provoking lyrics, which make you think about yourself as a person in relation to everyone else in the world. "Janeen" is a fun song about a woman that Jann can't stand, really tongue in cheek song. "I Only Wanted Sex" is as brutally honest as they come, a quirky song where Jann conveys that she was only in the relationship for selfish needs of sex, not for love. "Waiting In Canada" is a nice album opener, about the beauty of Canada and what lies within its boundaries. "Sleepless" is a very catchy and poignant song about the world around us, and how we need each other in our lives. The songs have this universal appeal, and its just quality start to finish. Other highlights include "Never Give Up On Me", "Sorry For Myself", "Into The Sun", "Piece of It All", and many more. Overall it might not be Jann's most popular album, but artistically I think it is her best.

5 out of 5 stars She can certainly grow on you!.......2002-02-23

I was introduced to Jann Arden when I searching for lyrics and I discovered her amazing song, "Hangin' By A Thread" and it reflected my pain, heartbreak, and sorrow during that time in my life. When I first listened to "Cherry Popsicle" I was astonished to how much I could relate to her lyrics, her humor, and pain. This is wonderful purchase and every song on the album is wonderful especially with "Sleepless", "Mend", "Best Dress" and others.

4 out of 5 stars Happier but less substance.......2001-06-15

Jann's music plumbs emotional depths, and stimulates a view of the world that sometimes is quite depressed. However, her music also celebrates the joy of love, and friendship. This album is more upbeat than her classic previous album, Happy?, but it doesn't touch the emotional range that that one did. Sleepless is a wonderful song, and most people will find it rather addictive. There are many enjoyable songs on this album, and some are clearly playful and humorous. It just doesn't rank up with her best, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!.......2001-03-24

Wow! Jann has once again made an amazing album. This CD is great! Some of the best songs on the CD include: Taste of This, Waiting in Canada, and In Your Keeping. With soaring melodies, and very emotional lyrics, this CD is a definite keeper!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Stripped down, intimate Jann Arden............2006-01-17

Going through Jann Arden's music has become a chore, she has
put out some really excellent collections. Several things stand
out, shes a top notch writer, you don't have to be a female
to take note of the emotional wallop her songs highlight. She is
more than clever with words, she writes so much about love and all its frailties, shes good at uncovering, sometimes even pocking fun at ourselves. Sure she can be melancholy but never depressing, her songs remind me in certain ways of Joan Armatrading writing style, not the music but the intimate way Joan writes, at times it cuts right through you. Jann Arden is a
very under-rated singer-songwriter-musical arranger. "LOVE IS
THE ONLY SOLIDER" isn't as punchy or radio friendly as "Blood
Red Cherry" but it goes deeper and isn't afraid to show Jann's
considerable emotional range. This one takes time to get under
your skin. As usual Jann's music has enough commerical edge
yet is adult(Triple A)pop-rock, she's been doing this style
for years and she's a big hit at home in Canada. I wouldn't say "Love is the only soldier" is a blockbuster but it has enough strong
choice cuts("love is the only soldier","when you left me", "anna rebecca","ruby red"(great vocals!) to recommend it. I'm not sure why American radio
chooses to ignore Jann Arden, she is a classy performer and
this country is desperate for real talent.

5 out of 5 stars A musical masterpiece.......2004-10-08

While I wasn't so into this album when it was first released, I have really been appreciating the incredible beauty of this album recently. I was used to the more commercial sound of Jann a la Wishing That, Could I Be Your Girl, The Sound Of, and this album has a much different sound. But I would describe this album as layered. Each song is just full of depth, from the drum beats, up through the pianos and guitars, all the way to the vocals, which are as usual, breathtaking.

I think this is certainly Jann's best album ever. She recorded it in her basement and I think that made this album sound so much more intimate.

While there are only 10 tracks on this album, I think it's better to have 10 amazing tracks than 3 hits and 10 or 12 filler songs like many artists do. From the whimsical and haunting songs like "Anna Rebecca" and "When You Left Me" to the simply rocking songs like "Only One" this album contains a beautiful variety and mix of sounds. This is one of the very best studio albums I have ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of songs.......2004-04-22

Jann Arden finally released an album of new material in September 2003 in Canada. This is the long awaited follow up to 2000's BLOOD RED CHERRY. The album has a more stripped down feel to it, whereas BLOOD RED CHERRY was full of production and complex melodies and beats. There's some really nice music on here though. The title track was the first single, not a favorite of mine, I didn't care for the vocals too much. There's some really nice ballads though, like "Anna Rebecca", "Not Saying Goodbye", "When You Left Me" and "Fighting For The World". Other highlights include "If You Loved Me", "Only One" and "Ruby Red". Not her best album but there's some good stuff on here that fans will love.

5 out of 5 stars Jann amazes.......2003-11-25

Jann mentioned that the recording of this album was accompanied by many "firsts". The first time she was the sole producer, the first time she recorded an album in her basement, and the first time her touring band contributed to the tracks (as opposed to studio musicians). I can think of another couple of "firsts". Jann plays the piano on 3 tracks here and what a treat that turned out to be. "Anna Rebecca", "When You Left Me", and "Fighting for the World" feature Ms. Arden tickling the ivories and all three tunes are stirring and heartfelt. Her vocals are as strong as ever. Another first? I think Jann hits her highest note yet in "Ruby Red", and sustains it until you feel out of breath. This is a great song.

Someone mentioned in another review that they felt Jann was drifting in the wrong direction. I think she got back on track with "Love is the Only Soldier". While I really liked "Blood Red Cherry", it will undoubtedly go down in history as Jann's "experimental" album.

I don't think Jann is capable of writing a bad song. I've liked everything she's put out so far, and I see no signs of that stopping here.

Her humor is intact on songs like "Only One":

If I come back
If I find you there
I'm calling on my daddy
And he'll kill you I swear

And "If You Loved Me":

If you loved me, I would not need my drunken friends
And if you loved me, my loneliness for sure would end.

"Anna Rebecca" is a great song about loss. You don't know the details, but you know she's singing about a friendship that crumbled:

Remember that December night
Talking ourselves into day
Waving goodbye from the back of a cab
Please remember me that way

"When You Left Me" is quite possibly one of her saddest songs:

When you left me nothing mattered
All my life undone
Only stillness, only quiet
Not one ray of sun

It's an absolutely gorgeous song. Very haunting. Some people can't seem to tolerate sad songs. I don't get depressed by them. I dig them. They mellow me out in some strange way. There's nothing like a sad song to get you to thinking about your own life in an introspective manner. I think they can be very therapeutic. They are for me, in any case.

"Fighting for the World" is another great melancholy tune. She sings from the perspective of a family persisitng through the holidays while a loved one is away in the armed services.

"Love is the Only Soldier" is the first single and is one of my favorite songs. It doesn't seem an obvious choice for a single, but I love this song. It's a great showcase for her songwriting and vocals, and I think the arrangement is excellent. She really soars on the chorus:

Hide me inside your heart let me wash away
Hold me beneath your body all night and day
I pray that the morning comes and with me you'll stay
Hide me inside your heart let me wash away

There's a lot to like here with this album. I rank it very highly in my Jann Arden collection, which consists of everything she's ever released, even the rare and hard to find stuff, singles, etc. I'm such a big fan, I only wish she had more exposure in the US. I hope to catch her on this tour. I saw her during the symphony tour in Winnipeg and it was a phenomenal show.

4 out of 5 stars A Canadian's View.......2003-11-20

So far I have seen Jann Arden three times in concert, and in the winter I will be going to see her for my fourth time. I got to hear Ruby Red and Love is the Only Soldier, two of the singles of this CD, when she opened for the Dixie Chicks in Ottawa. Jann is an amazing singer, as well as a great comedian on stage! I recommend this cd, and recommend visiting Canada to see her perform.
