Hasten Down the Wind

Hasten Down the Wind

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
After the critical and commercial smash Heart Like a Wheel, Linda Ronstadt could have had her pick of material from the day's top songwriters. Instead, she chose the wares of a couple of young artists on the rise, Warren Zevon and Karla Bonoff. Each provided her with first-rate material for Hasten Down the Wind: Zevon wrote the title track and Bonoff supplied "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me," "Lose Again," and "If He's Ever Near." Ronstadt also bravely covers songs already done definitively by others--Patsy Cline's "Crazy," Buddy Holly's "That'll Be the Day," and Tracy Nelson's "Down So Low"--and emerges not merely unscathed, but triumphant. She also presages the turn toward Spanish material her career took in the '80s with "Lo Siento Mi Vida." It's easy to see why the public went wild for Hasten, Ronstadt's first platinum album. --Daniel Durchholz

4 out of 5 stars Still Crazy (For Linda) After All These Years.......2007-04-23

Bought 'Hasten Down The Wind' as an LP in college. My roommates dug her
for her sex appeal (me, too). But, that voice just blew you away. Still
does. This album (especially "Give One Heart" {love the reaggae sounding
tag to the cut} and "Try Me Again") had been spun from September through
May, when school was out. Sounded great then on the stereo, then the tape
deck and soon, the CD in the vehicle. Another gem in Ronstadt's wide
repetoire of covering familiar and new songwriter material.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ..........2007-03-19

While I have not always followed Linda's mucical journeys,I have found most of her work excellent."HASTEN DOWN THE WIND" is by far one of my personal favorites.Stand out tracks for me.."the tattler""give one heart""down so low""try me again"This collection was close to perfection and still puts alot of todays "song beater divas" to shame.

5 out of 5 stars We did not know.......2007-01-18

I happend to see Linda Ronstadt's great performance The Tattler on youtube and decided to buy this CD. This album is very nice too. We Japanese did not know Linda Ronstadt did great job like this.

5 out of 5 stars Linda's Voice is Angelic.......2006-07-01

This is music to ride into the mountains with. I listen to this while I drive to Mt. Rainier. It gives you goosebumps. Her voice is so crystal clear - so beautiful. Whether hiking, biking, walking or just dancing around the house or backyard, this will make your heart sing.

3 out of 5 stars Brings back childhood memories.......2006-05-21

This was one of my mom's favorites. She listened to this and Simple Dreams constantly. I stared at the album covers constantly. Especially this one! This reminds me of growing up and how I knew mom was in a great mood when I would come home and this was playing. I have the cd now and I hope my kids enjoy the music as much as I did. I'm saving the cover for myself though!

3 out of 5 stars Maybe the acid test ..........2007-06-30

... is whether Warren would like it. I kind of think he would. Maybe he's sitting on a cloud somewhere, chuckling.

5 out of 5 stars Ain't So Bad.......2006-10-26

In fact, I really liked it!

what ya gotta do is burn a CD with the instrumental followed by the Zevon original. It works for me. I think Warren woulda got a kick outta this one. I can imagine him with a cigerette holder, wearing a gray flannel suit with gold matching cuff links and tie clasp humming along with these songs as he rides to the top floor of a high rise in an elevator. And...his hair is perfect!

1 out of 5 stars Shameful.......2006-08-26

You would be better served buying any other release full of WZ's music instead of this one. Part of the problem is the leaden execution of the music. It sounds like a totally midi programmed score, drum machines, midi instruments and the like. The second problem is that this release illustrates that, while WZ was a true genius musically, without his lyricism, his melodies can be repetitive. Don't agree with me? Then buy this CD, and listen to "Werewolves of London" 5 times in a row.

2 out of 5 stars The most lackluster "tribute" ever produced..........2005-02-02

The version of "Roland..." presented here is the only thing that keeps this from a 1 star rating. It's dull and lacks any of the intensity or originalitly that Zevon brought to the original recordings of these songs. "Enjoy Every Sandwhich" has some great moments and heartfelt tributes, this is an insult to a genius.

3 out of 5 stars the jury is out.......2004-03-07

i am a HUGE wz fan and have been since i first saw him live in boston circa 1980. i agree with some of the other comments. no lyrics means that you've lost more than half the power of zevon. however, i'm delighted that someone out there respects his songs so much as to put out a tribute record. but what i would really like to see (hear) is a tribute record performed by singer/songwriters, such as bob dylan, tom waits, elvis costello, or even eugene chadbourne, the residents or randy newman. now that would be fun !!!
and i still want 'the envoy' and 'stand in the fire' to be released on CD. get with it already !!!
