5 out of 5 stars Not Quite Friends, Not Quite Strangers..........2007-04-15

..thus 'Frengers' was born, the U.S. debut of the triumphant avant guard band from Denmark. Mew is one of the most unique bands I know of, there is really no one who sounds like them. Jonas Bjerre, the lead singer, has a very feminine, light voice, but it never sounds small or overwhelmed, even though many of the songs have an epic, stadium like sound.. such as the powerful intro 'Am I Wry? No.'

Towards the middle are a couple of slower songs that are not quite up to par with the rest of the album. 'Her Voice Is Beyond Her Years' and 'Symmetry' feature guest vocals from Stina Nordenstam and Becky Jarrett respectively. They add some nice variety, but unfortunately when Jonas sings, it sounds as if he is holding back so he does not dominate them.

But these are only minor complaints as the songs still sound very good. Really 'Frengers' is a album like no other. Upon listening I instantly became a Mew fan. Also it makes for a good intro to the follow up 'And the Glass Handed Kites.'

Give it a listen, if you want something new and fresh, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars what a beauty!.......2007-02-24

These guys are so talented, to me they create perfect music; melodic, well produced, a grand sound, incredible vocals, this is going to be my favorite band for awhile. Won't be able to keep off the expensive debut double. This band's gonna be big, if the world has any sense. It's a question of bumping into them, which I feel lucky to have. More female vocals ( more upfront) than on the kites cd which I like. Nice songs( singles), not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is Frengin' sweet!.......2007-02-18

This CD is amazing. The production quality really gives justice to the artists' music. Several very "dreamscapy" songs. Mew is wonderfully artistic, Jonas' vocals are just sweet, and they have that Sigur Ros-like sound, only they sing in English and don't use gibberish. I just love both of their albums (And The Glass Handed Kites), and await new material in the future!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Frengs.......2007-01-24

Mew is a mishmash band -- a little indie-rock, a little prog, a little pop, a little hard-rock and a little art rock.

And in their third album "Frengers," the Danish band mixes all of those together, and lets listeners hear the grand extent of what they can do. This album is rich with atmospheric music and fiery instrumentation -- an absolutely dazzling, powerful slab of rock'n'roll.

It opens with the shimmering riffs and kinetic basslines of "Am I Wry? No," a hard-edged song with choirlike backing vocals. It grows into a soaring rock epic, before falling back to Jonas Bjerre's high, sharp voice. "Farrah now that we're here/can you tell me exactly how I should/have done?/Farrah drives with her eyes closed/do you ever inflict unwanted memories?"

It gets soft and wintry at the start of the next song, only to blossom out into a fast-paced rocker laced with bells and synth. The songs that follow are the whole sonic palette: muscular rockers, airy piano ballads backed with synth, driving guitar rockers, surreal psychfolk, and lightning-quick rock'n'roll that veers between guitar pop and the hard stuff.

Maybe that's what makes Mew so appealing -- you can't put a label on their sound (psych-pop-prog-hard-art-rock?) and you can't sit still whenever it's playing. Whenever their music settles into a signature "sound," they turn around and change it yet again.

Every song is layered with instrumentation -- some incredibly strong riffs, loud basslines, a fluid piano melody of two, a little synth, and some sharp percussion are all smoothed into one in songs like "Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed." Best of all, their music has an epic, powerful quality -- "Am I Wry? No" has the quality of a feisty thunderstorm.

Jonas Bjerre's voice is a bit elusive. At the start it sounds rather high and nasal, but eventually his vocals start melting into the music itself -- the peak is when he duets with Stina Nordenstam. And the songs he sings are quite solidly written ("Because no one is safe/From someone somewhere's/Sweet embrace/And so I have simply decided/To dislike you now").

"Frengers" is a solid third album for this brilliant Danish band, and the first album that got them the notice they richly deserve. Wonderful piece of work.

I get so much pleasure from Mew's music, I feel sorry for those who haven't discovered them. Loved glass handed kites, my favorite album of 2006, so I got frengers. Hard to say which I prefer. NO bad song, I love bands that don't impose duds on my ears. Pure delight! I wish these nice danish hippies the best in life, they're wonderful. Jonas sings like an angel, his voice carries me where few do (Jon Anderson, the mystic, comes to mind; bless him too, he's one of the best). No pointers, it's all top notch.

5 out of 5 stars Engage Mew.......2006-12-13

After purchasing "And the Glass Handed Kites" and, admittedly, listening to it every day for two months straight, I thought it might be prudent for my future enjoyment of the album to put it down for awhile. Within days, I was missing Mew. To combat this feeling, I resisted the urge to put "And the Glass Handed Kites" back in the player, and instead ordered "Frengers." After all, in my initial research of Mew's oeuvre, I found several tunes that I liked that were not on that recording.

"Frengers" is easily as strong a recording as "And the Glass Handed Kites," but for different reasons. Undoubtedly, fans of one will like the other, as they share the same overall aesthetic. However, in comparison, "Frengers" has some significantly distinguishing characteristics. Most importantly, "Frengers" is not bound by the conventions associated with the "conceptual album." While "And the Glass Handed Kites" is probably the more mature effort of the two, "Frengers" may be a better introduction to the group, as it is more single-friendly. Succinctly, if I were to introduce someone to Mew, I would undoubtedly suggest "156," followed by "Snow Brigade." In both of these tunes, they are able to reference the epic scope of their vision in a succinct format.

While these songs stand out to me as an individual, I genuinely like all the other songs on "Frengers." Unbound by the conventions of the "conceptual album," "Frengers" shows Mew's ability to encapsulate, and therefore show the strengths of their short-form works. While "And the Glass Handed Kites" inarguably shows that they have the ability to sustain a conceptual narrative, "Frengers" is an example of the potential strength of their singles.

The Lowdown: "Frengers" is the middle ground. Mew pushes the boundaries between accessibility and experimentalism, and I see "Frengers" as a transitional album in the tradition of Yes' "Drama" and Genesis' "And Then There Were Three." I foresee great things for them in the future if they continue to push the envelope.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding album.......2006-05-04

I will say right now that this is one of the best-sounding albums you will ever hear. Listen to the last minute of Behind the Drapes, as an example (some clarity is sacrificed for an overwhelming wall of sound, a good choice). I want Rich Costey to produce my album (he gets the production credit in the liner notes).
Aside from its unmatched sound, the music stands on its own. The song writing is above par: sophisticated but not esoteric. A handful of songs are as catchy as anything on the Billboard charts (Snow Brigade).
Some songs will probably strike you as emo-ish (She Spider), or power ballad-y (Symmetry), but overall, the album is huge, dreamy, many-layered rock and roll.

Mew's ability to write super ear pleasing tunes and still provide an artistic arrangement is amazing! They've got it all. Tight musicianship, and people friendly songs.

This is one of those utterly surprising, intensely listenable albums that you find yourself never tiring of. OK, like anything, if you indulge in it long enough it's charms may begin to tarnish but if that should happen simply put it away for awhile and return to it anew in a few weeks, Si? Bene!

5 out of 5 stars mew is awesome but where can i find them?.......2004-10-01

well, this is a semi-review of mew, but rather, a qeustion for the previous 4 reviewers below, but before i start, i must say that mew has REALLY impressed me with their vocal/musical range, style & ability to convey feelings in poetry. it was a 'love @ first hear'. wonderful stuff!

now: first of all, i cannot find this particular jpn+dvd version ANYWHERE! i've special ordered it online for several months, and been looking all over san francisco bay area record stores (amoeba, rasputin's... etc) to no avail! where did you find ur copy? i have friends looking for it in japan/norway as well, but no luck, boohoo... perhaps u may be able to help me locate a copy? (not the regular version, that i can get easily online.)

then, this is THE question. from the amazon tracklisting i see that there're 23 tracks in the jpn+dvd verson. but at the editorial review it only mentions 2 extra tracks + 1 video clip for CS.
it confuses me... what exactly does this version have that the regular one (10 tracks) does't have? i want it i want it i want it. it's been a while since i fall in love with a band instantly. mew IS truly amazing...

That would be this band. High energy, cohesive rock. And this is just their first ablum! I cant wait to see what they do in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Like a drug you canýt quit........2004-06-05

This CD is great, as if the original one hadn't been enough, MEW released an enhanced CD with two extra tracks which are mind blowing "Tsin Tsi and Wherever". "Am I wry? No" and "156" gets you hooked and you can't change the CD; then comes the other songs from which my favorite one is "She spider", and even though I haven't been able to fully enjoy the DVD because of it being region 2 forcing me to listen to it in my computer, I really recommend the extra tracks CD.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant and truly different.......2004-05-23

I know MEW since I am Danish, and wanted to do somebody a favor by recommending this album. Mew has quite a unique sound, as the reviewer above also finds. It is really hard to describe, which is only to say that you are in for a special treat. It is indie rock of some sort, but yes, very playful, imaginative, cinematic. By the way, MEW have been around for ages, and this album consists of about 6 reproductions of earlier works and the rest are new, which means that it is great quality. All songs are brilliant. I also recommend Kashmir from Denmark, almost equally great, and these two bands are just about what Denmark has to offer on the music scene, and its not bad, at all

5 out of 5 stars The "Cinema Paradiso" of music !.......2003-12-16

Originally from Denmark but now based themselves in London, MEW has definitely got my vote for the most artistic album of 2003.

It's hard to generally define what genre they fall into. It's even harder to pick on another group/band that sounds like MEW. I guess it'd be a justice to describe as a mix of PLACEBO, ROYKSOPP, and RADIOHEAD. By ingeniously blending the alternative, cinematic, orchestra, and electronic sounds, nothing describes them best other than what I called `The Cinema Paradiso of music.'

Listening to "Frengers", you'll be taken on a timeless journey into layered of eclectic soundscapes. Not only that, the album is also filled with poetic lyrics and top-notch vocals. Opening with a more aggressive track ("Am I Wry? No"), you'll immediately notice a distinguished vocal of Jonas Bjerre that reminds me of the vocalist of the 80's group called "The Outfield." There's this `cuteness' high pitched vocal that, in my opinion, sounds even better when he hits those high notes like in "Comforting Sounds", "She Came home For Christmas", "Eight Flew Over, One Was Destroyed" and "Symmetry."

And let me just say that you should never worry about hitting the skip button because the tracks are keep getting better and better as it keeps on progressing. An epic "Comforting Sounds" which runs for 8:53 in it's original album version (not the edited version on radio/MTV) is surely gorgeous, but rest-assured that plenty of other beautiful tracks you get here. It's hard to pick favorite tracks on this album cause the whole tracks are great and each has it's unique quality to each own. But if I have to pick on my personal favorites, those are: "Symmetry", "She Came Home For Christmas", "Comforting Sounds", and "Am I Wry? No."

This one has definitely become my new favorite group. The album is easily one of my Top 3 albums in 2003, possibly the best yet !
