Griffin's follow-up to the acoustic, lyric-based material of Living with Ghosts shifts gears so dramatically, it hardly seems like the work of the same artist. In an electric wonderland of dense percussion tracks (played by Kenny Aronoff) and tricky guitar attacks (handled by producer Jay Joyce), Griffin reveals herself as a muscular rock & roll singer as well as an emotionally vulnerable balladeer. If the Ramones-loud title track seems to be trying too hard to rock and other cuts just sound busy, overwhelming the song with production--the chaotic rant of "Wiggley Fingers," for one--the anthemic pulse of "Tony" and the modern soul of "Christina" are gorgeous and convincing. They're the work of an imagination set free, if not fully grown. --Roy Kasten

No Depression
Flaming Red is a rockabilly rave-up so removed from the easygoing immediacy of Living with Ghosts that it's impossible to read it as anything other than a radical statement of newfound purpose.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

I only recently discovered Patty Griffin when I picked up her latest cd, Children Running Through. I heard the song "Mary", which is included on Flaming Red, while watching a documentary a few weeks ago and immediately ordered this cd. Her voice is quite possibly the most amazing thing I've ever heard. This cd has everything...high-energy rock, soulful blues and ballads that will give you chills.

I love music. I love Patty Griffin. I love "Living with Ghosts". Flaming Red is one of the BEST CDs I have EVER heard!

5 out of 5 stars Patty Griffin - FLAMING RED is a Daring Work.......2007-03-28

"Hey Peter Pan/ I'm going home now/ I've done all I can/ Besides I'm grown now" Patty Griffin sings as the closing lines on her brilliant CD "FLAMING RED". So appropriate to close with these words, since Ms. Griffin certainly comes of age on this album, showing us the maturation of her emotions and talent at which she only hinted in her earlier acoustic endeavors. On "FLAMING RED", Patty Griffin digs deep into her soul and pulls out one of the most intriguing recorded works of the last decade. How to describe Patty Griffin? Part Rock-abilly, part folk singer, part baladeer, part poet laureate, she encompases the best of the generations before her, with echoes of Joan Baez and Judy Collins, mixed with the more controlled angst of Tori Amos, and the delicate beauty of Dar Williams and Sarah MacLachlan. This is not to say that she is derivative, since Patty Griffin is a true original, whose range on this album boggles the mind. She opens with a blast on "Flaming Red' and takes the listener on a wild journey through her life. One of the most touching moments on the CD is a quiet country-inspired work called "Goodbye" where she laments the loss of a friend- a much-used topic for songs, but Ms. Griffin finds a unique way to handle the subject. She shows her true vocal range on "Carry Me" and the lovely lilting ballad "Christina". "Wiggley Fingers" is a jazzy delight as is "Big Daddy." If you think that modern music is going the way of mindless pop and melody-free rap, don't despair. Listen to Patty Griffin's "FLAMING RED" and your faith in modern music will be restored.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-02-19

This album has PUNCH! And is merciless....
Hard-hitting rock album that sounds incredible! A far cry from "Makin' Pies" I'd say....but also shows the versatility of the artist in a great way. The song "Big Daddy" really speaks to my heart. I feel like I'm floating away on a serene, deep lagoon and is a nice hyptnotic break from the album's firey beginnings... SNATCH IT UP & LOVE IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hey Tony, what's so good about dying?.......2007-01-25

This album is incredible. However, the gem on this...and honestly on any Patty Griffin album because it's THAT good...is Tony. When I first got this album, I fell in love with the whole thing, but it's the only song I wanted to hear. The way she belts the line, "I know that story, I was sitting right behind you" makes my hair raise because it's so amazing. Get this album for every song, because they are all so good. Listen to Tony with special attention, though. It is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Runaways - 'Flaming School Girls' (Cherry Red).......2006-08-22

Nicely assembled Runaways compilation, that was originally released in 1980.Good old school 'girl's night out' style hard rock.About every cut here rocks out, like "Hollywood Cruisin'","Secrets",a couple of Joan Jett penned compositions "C'mon" and "I Love Playing With Fire" as well as their two covers,George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun" and the Beatle's "Strawberry Fields"(well done).A definite should-have.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Girls Don't Play Rock 'n Roll.......2005-08-31

The Runaways was without doubts the best female girl group in 70's and I think it is still. I have their four studio album and the live album "Live in Japan". They all have been great and so is this. The intro is very short. The next song "Strawberry Fields" has been written by Lennon and McCartney. This is a very peaceful song and I think it is great. Cherie Currie sings very beautifully. "C'mon" is the one that was in "Live in Japan". This version is studio. The live version is even better, you can find it in "Live in Japan". "Hollywood Cruisn'" is a joke version of the classic song "Hollywood" which was released in their second album "Queens of Noise". In this version there's talking and laughing. "Blackmail" and "Is It Day or Night?" are great live recordings. You can feel the female rock power!!! "Here Comes the Sun" (written by G Harrison) and "Hollywood Dream" are quite peaceful but very good songs. Those songs could have been in "Queens of Noise" album. "Don't Abuse Me" is a great song...it is much tougher than the two earlier songs. "I Love Playin' with Fire" and "Secrets" are great live version. The quality is perefect and Cherie's voice can be well heard.

Hollywood, it feels so good...

If you have The Runaways s/t, Queens of Noise, and Live in Japan, your next target should be this one.

4 out of 5 stars Captures a wild, crazy time quite vividly.......2005-03-15

It must've been a crazy, hectic time for the all-girl hard rock band: 16 and 17-year olds, traveling around the world, trying to get famous. This album(prev. unreleased gems, live tracks, studio hijinks)really captures The Runaways' world perfectly, with laughter and madness and mayhem mixed with great music. Probably the biggest find was Cherie Currie's pseudo-lament "Hollywood Dream"(actually a better song than "Midnight Music" from 'Queens of Noise')and of course the fabulous "Hollywood Cruisin'" with Lita Ford & Jackie Fox 'doing the Boulevard'. Sounds like they were having a blast--too bad it didn't last.

3 out of 5 stars odds put together.......2004-10-17

An album put together by all sorts of Runaways-leftovers. Cohesion between its songs clearly lacking, 'Flaming Schoolgirls' nevertheless keeps up the quality of the Runaways' music. Nice for the true fan.
